The Population History Of The Philippines: A Genetic Overview, Frederick C. Delfin Nov 2015

The Population History Of The Philippines: A Genetic Overview, Frederick C. Delfin

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

This professorial address synthesizes the findings of several studies on the genetics of Philippine population groups and presents them in a manner accessible to nonspecialists. These studies examined different types of DNA (Y-chromosome, mitochondrial, and autosomal) samples contributed by participants in twelve regional centers and nineteen ethnolinguistic groups. The data reveal (a) genetic affinities with different groups in the Asia-Pacific region, (b) genetic signals of ancient demographic events, (c) an ancient genetic history of about 5,000–50,000 years ago, and (d) a complex population genetic structure. This genetic overview has implications for the study of human history, forensics, and medicine. Keywords: DNA …

Philippine Kinship And Social Organization From The Perspective Of Historical Linguistics, Maria Kristina Gallego Nov 2015

Philippine Kinship And Social Organization From The Perspective Of Historical Linguistics, Maria Kristina Gallego

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Based on a reconstruction of Proto-Philippine kinship and social organization terminologies, thisarticle characterizes early Philippine kinship as bilateral with possible quasi-lineages. These features support the reconstruction of the Proto–Malayo-Polynesian system made by George Peter Murdock (1949) rather than that of Robert Blust (1980). In terms of leadership, the early Philippine community is described as dualistic in nature, allowing achieved and ascribed or hereditary chiefdom—thus deviating from the ancestral concept of hereditary leadership in the Proto–Malayo-Polynesian system. Changes in the Philippine kinship system are traced to show innovations in nomenclature and behavior toward certain kin. Keywords: historical linguistics • cultural reconstruction • …

The Effects Of Music On Education And Early Literacy: An Insight On Defining Literacy And The Use Of Music In The Classroom, Lindsey Hawkins Nov 2015

The Effects Of Music On Education And Early Literacy: An Insight On Defining Literacy And The Use Of Music In The Classroom, Lindsey Hawkins

University Honors Program

The purpose of this essay is to examine the effects that music has on education and literacy, and to provide insight on how to go about using music in a classroom. First, the essay will define the word ‘literacy,’ and prove why this is important, and then describe how literacy is taught in a classroom using phonics. Then, it will take a look at how music affects the student brain, and how those effects are linked directly to the way students process reading, writing, and communication. Finally, this essay will look at the direct effects that music has on education …

American Culture’S Impact On Gender And The Perpetuation Of A Gender Binary, Anna Blaho Nov 2015

American Culture’S Impact On Gender And The Perpetuation Of A Gender Binary, Anna Blaho

University Honors Program

This thesis explores the origins of American culture’s fixation on gender being a dichotomous concept. Through the analysis of previous research surrounding the subject of gender roles, expectations, and stereotypes, contributors to this restrictive mind frame as well as reinforcing agents were recognized. Historical trends have demonstrated the assignment of clear and separate tasks to the genders, which in turn created differentiated experiences and opportunities presented to each gender. Facilitated by the historical basis, American culture emulated similar patterns that instilled inflexible conceptions about gender to the point where it has created a discriminate workplace environment. As a consequence of …

This paper discusses a group of experiments named rhythm exercise. It is a series of experiments which is based within the field of Smart Textiles, especially in the area of light emitting textiles. Rhythm exercise is one series of experiments out of a larger body of work (Jansen, 2015a), exploring the visual effects of movement using light as a continuous time- based medium in the field of textile design. Thereby investigates to expand an understanding about time and light as new forms of design materials in the particular context area. The experiments present new forms of instruments, textile instruments, interfaces …

How To Visually Represent The Colour Theory Of Thermochromic Inks, Marjan Kooroshnia Nov 2015

How To Visually Represent The Colour Theory Of Thermochromic Inks, Marjan Kooroshnia

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Colour theories have been established in order to allow artists and designers to understand the relationship between colours, and to determine how a chosen colour will react or interact with another. Smart colours - such as leuco dye-based thermochromic inks - have entered into the textile and fashion design world, bringing with them new challenges. This paper stresses the fact that, in order to demonstrate and describe the behaviour of these inks at different temperatures when printed on textiles, a new colour system is required. Four design experiments using thermochromic inks are described and these, along with the discussion presented, …

Material Knowledge: Unlocking The Research Potential Of The ‘Micro’ Architectural Practice, Ewen Mclachlan Nov 2015

Material Knowledge: Unlocking The Research Potential Of The ‘Micro’ Architectural Practice, Ewen Mclachlan

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Materiality is the medium through which architecture engages most directly with its inhabitants, via their sensory and perceptual faculties. Current understandings of the physical traits, symbolic potential and poetic qualities of constructional materials benefit from earlier theoretical and empirical investigations. Such explorations continue through the work of contemporary architecture practices, particularly at the early design stage of projects and during the building process, when material investigations are undertaken as a matter of course. In the UK, small practices (5 or fewer staff) comprise the majority of the profession, so their collective work can be expected to contain a significant proportion …

Madec: Exploring New Methodologies To Transfer Material Knowledge Into Design Disciplines, Chiara Lecce Nov 2015

Madec: Exploring New Methodologies To Transfer Material Knowledge Into Design Disciplines, Chiara Lecce

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Due to the increased complexity of materials and production processes, the responsibility of the development of a design is often left in the hands of technicians and production personnel. This lack of knowledge about materials thus effectively creates a barrier between the designer and the product. Bridging this gap represents a challenge to designers and especially to the design schools. (Bak-Andersen 2013, p.69) Designers cannot know everything but they can open their minds and develop a more conscious understanding of this new field of design practice starting from a cultural point of view. MADEC is a research group based in …

Processes Of Artefact Creation In The Hybrid-Reality Engaging With Materials Through Material Oxymorons, Laura Ferrarello, William Fairbrother Nov 2015

Processes Of Artefact Creation In The Hybrid-Reality Engaging With Materials Through Material Oxymorons, Laura Ferrarello, William Fairbrother

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Yet the nature of all these things must of course be physical since otherwise they could not impress our senses —for impression means touch, and touch means the touch of bodies. Lucrezio, "De Rerum Natura" The materiality of things represents the connection between our bodies and the physical world. However, in recent years, with the overlay of a new digital reality onto the existing physical one, materiality has extended its domain of existence into the virtual world through haptic technologies. The sense of touch is no longer restricted to a physical contact with any kind of "thing" existing in our …

Unanswered Prayers: A Study Of Apologia For God In The Matter Of Prayer, Dann L. Pierce Esq., Bohn D. Lattin Nov 2015

Unanswered Prayers: A Study Of Apologia For God In The Matter Of Prayer, Dann L. Pierce Esq., Bohn D. Lattin

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

Many Christian writers and thinkers take up the vexing issue of unanswered prayer and thereby use various rhetorical strategies to address the intersection of pertinent teaching about prayer, and the disjunctive, problematic life experiences concerning the experience of unanswered pray-er. Our investigation uses the ancient rhetorical genre of apologia as a lens to better understand the tactics and stances taken up by those who seek to guide members of faith communities toward reconciliation between perceived biblical teaching and actual life experiences concerning unan-swered prayer. Our study incorporates an analysis of both the formal and conceptual strategies utilized by rhetors who …

A Re-Examination Of "Imagistic Thinking": With A Focus On Zhu Guangqian And Li Zehou, Qian Cao Nov 2015

A Re-Examination Of "Imagistic Thinking": With A Focus On Zhu Guangqian And Li Zehou, Qian Cao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Zhu Guangqian's and Li Zehou's concepts of "imagistic thinking" were formed in the 1950s and the Post-Mao Period, with each having distinctive characteristics and both having common ground. While both equal "imagination" with "imagistic thinking," Zhu had always been taking them as the same and Li’s concept has evolved into using imagination to replace imagistic thinking. Although imagistic thinking is a transitional concept in the history of contemporary Chinese aesthetics, its theoretical value and significance are highlighted in the present context of linguistic turn and visual culture.

Ideology In Narrative And The Surpass Of It: A Discussion Based On Ricoeur's Lectures On Ideology And Utopia, Xin Liu Nov 2015

Ideology In Narrative And The Surpass Of It: A Discussion Based On Ricoeur's Lectures On Ideology And Utopia, Xin Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper bases its discussion on Paul Ricoeur's Lectures on Ideology and Utopia and investigates how Ricoeur proposes his own dialectical conceptualization upon his own reading of Marx's classical texts and constructs his dimension of reflection in his poetics of narrative. Narrative, when bringing logic structure into events, becomes a process of rationalization or legitimization, and in this process the reality is distorted. Before it becomes absolute distortion, Ricoeur claims, the representation itself is one part of the materialistic and linguistic activities of a human person, a language of real life existed before distortion. When narrative links to such function, …

Ironical Appropriation Of Revolutionary Signs: For Memories Buried In Forgetting, Jiwu Zhou Nov 2015

Ironical Appropriation Of Revolutionary Signs: For Memories Buried In Forgetting, Jiwu Zhou

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The ironical appropriation of revolutionary signs is a visual representation strategy widely used in contemporary art practice of China, with the purpose to transform invisible cultural trauma into visual text of remembrance. Amid the textual and visual narratives, hierarchical order of symbols and signs meets its deconstruction. Appropriation of revolutionary signs in contemporary art practice is evident in three aspects: 1) appropriation and contra-appropriation of visual signs; 2) displacement and transformation of visual images; 3) parody of visual texts. However, not all appropriation of revolutionary signs is ironical, and the criteria for irony should include semantic polysemy, contextual sharing, and …

Immigration Federalism As Ideology: Lessons From The States, Lina Newton Nov 2015

Immigration Federalism As Ideology: Lessons From The States, Lina Newton

Publications and Research

Over the last decade states passed hundreds of immigration bills covering a range of policy areas. This article considers the recent state legislative surge against scholarly treatments of immigration federalism, and identifies the symbolic politics in state lawmaking. The analysis combines a historical treatment of key court decisions that delineated boundaries of state and federal immigration roles with a legislative analysis of over 2200 immigration bills passed between 2006 and 2013, to identify the numerous ways in which national immigration policy shapes state measures. It argues that recent laws must be considered against symbolic federalism which privileges state sovereignty and …

“Whatdunit?” Developmental Changes In Children's Syntactically Based Sentence Interpretation Abilities And Sensitivity To Word Order, James W. Montgomery, Julia L. Evans, Ronald B. Gillam, Alexander V. Sergeev, Mianisha C. Finney

Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education Faculty Publications

Aim 1 of this study was to examine the developmental changes in typically developing English-speaking children’s syntactically-based sentence interpretation abilities and sensitivity to word order. Aim 2 was to determine the psychometric standing of the novel sentence interpretation task developed for this study, as we wish to use it later with children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). Children listened to semantically implausible sentences in which noun animacy and the natural affordance between the nouns were removed, thus controlling for event probability. Using this novel “whatdunit?” agent selection task, 256 children 7-11 years listened to two structures with canonical word order …

Viewing Film From A Communication Perspective: Film As Public Relations, Product Placement, And Rhetorical Advocacy In The College Classroom, Robin Patric Clair, Rebekah L. Fox, Jennifer L. Bezek Nov 2015

Viewing Film From A Communication Perspective: Film As Public Relations, Product Placement, And Rhetorical Advocacy In The College Classroom, Robin Patric Clair, Rebekah L. Fox, Jennifer L. Bezek

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

Academics approach film from multiple perspectives, including critical, literary, rhetorical, and managerial approaches. Furthermore, and outside of film studies courses, films are frequently used as a pedagogical tool. Their relevance in society as well as their valuable use in the classroom makes them an important and pragmatic medium deserving further attention. The ability of film to be used in a socio-political way may sustain, challenge or change the status quo, which supports studying film as well as teaching students about the power of film. The purpose of this article is to share the development of a course which points out …

Lets Talk About Sexual Assault A Feminist Exploration Of The Relationship Between Legal And Experiential Discourses, Dana Erin Phillips Nov 2015

Lets Talk About Sexual Assault A Feminist Exploration Of The Relationship Between Legal And Experiential Discourses, Dana Erin Phillips

LLM Theses

This thesis challenges the tendency within feminist legal thought to imagine a sharp division between law and lived experience, and specifically between feminist methods that engage legal discourse and those that invoke grassroots narratives grounded in experience. In order to better elucidate the relationship between legal and experiential discourses, the author compares recent legal discourse on sexual assault focusing on two Supreme Court of Canada decisions with women's own accounts of sexual violence, as presented in mainstream news media in the wake of the 2014 Jian Ghomeshi story. The findings, examined through the lens of feminist scholarship, support a view …

Increases In Perspective Embedding Increase Reading Time Even With Typical Text Presentation: Implications For The Reading Of Literature, D. H. Whalen, Lisa Zunshine, Michael Holquist

English Faculty Publications

Reading fiction is a major component of intellectual life, yet it has proven difficult to study experimentally. One aspect of literature that has recently come to light is perspective embedding ("she thought I left" embedding her perspective on "I left"), which seems to be a defining feature of fiction. Previous work (Whalen et al., 2012) has shown that increasing levels of embedment affects the time that it takes readers to read and understand short vignettes in a moving window paradigm. With increasing levels of embedment from 1 to 5, reading times in a moving window paradigm rose almost linearly. However, …

Analysis Of Nominalization In Elementary And Middle School Science Textbooks, Breanna Marie Mueller Nov 2015

Analysis Of Nominalization In Elementary And Middle School Science Textbooks, Breanna Marie Mueller

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research in this capstone examines the existence and implications of nominalizations through a text analysis of first through fifth grade and middle school science textbooks. This study utilizes various tools based on Systemic Functional Linguistics to determine the quantity and types of nominalizations found in various text levels, to reveal how frequently nominalizations are modified by a prepositional phrase that shows agency or force, to uncover how nominalization might affect the syntax and semantics of a text, and to deduce how nominalization might contribute to lexical density. The author also compares the results to address what nominalizations look like …

How Does Poetry Confess? Zhai Yongming's Poems And The Landscape Of "Confession", Xin Xu Nov 2015

How Does Poetry Confess? Zhai Yongming's Poems And The Landscape Of "Confession", Xin Xu

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

In the 1980s, a Chinese poet, Zhai Yongming (翟永明), published a linked suite of nineteen poems. Zhai entitled this sequence “Women” (Nǚren女人) and claimed that her poems were largely influenced by American confessional poets such as Sylvia Plath. Chinese critics suggest that Zhai inaugurates the trend of confessional poetry in China. This paper will first contextualize the Chinese translation of American confessional poetry in the Mao and post-Mao age, and then problematize the concept of “confession” in Chinese poetry criticism by making American confessional poetry a counter point. Under the term of confessional poetry it is “the illusion of a …

Middle-Income Latinos In Middle-Class Communities: A Study On Parental Involvement Dynamics, Rafael Inoa Nov 2015

Middle-Income Latinos In Middle-Class Communities: A Study On Parental Involvement Dynamics, Rafael Inoa

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The academic underperformance of students of Latino backgrounds is a serious cause for concern in the United States, especially considering the significant portion of the total U.S. population that Latinos constitute. Since parental involvement is known as a powerful resource in helping all students succeed academically, it can be used as a way to counter the achievement gap that Latinos are currently facing. However, middle-class Latinos, who are also plagued by this gap in academic achievement, are continuously overlooked throughout the educational literature. The current study lays focus on this group by centering on the perspectives of middle-income Latino parents …
