Social Determinants Of Late Stage Hiv Diagnosis And Its Distributions Among African Americans And Latinos: A Critical Literature Review, Alison M. Chopel, Meredith Minkler, Amani Nuru-Jeter, Megan Dunbar
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
ABSTRACT
This critical literature review was conducted to identify both individual- and environmental-level social determinants of health using an ecological framework as a way to contextualize risk for, and distributions of, late HIV diagnosis among African Americans and Latinos in the United States.
Background: Late diagnosis, defined as a diagnosis of AIDS simultaneously with or within one year of an initial HIV diagnosis,1 disproportionately affects African American and Latino communities;2,3 disparities in this health problem thus represent a preventable inequity. Such disparities affect not only late diagnosed individuals but also population levels of HIV incidence, as transmission is …

Journal of Family Strengths
This article considers the potential of integrating critical literacy into approaches to teaching and learning social studies as an indispensable tool for building better communities (Agbaria, 2011). It begins with an overview of the authors’ experiences and perspectives related to social studies and critical literacy. It then proceeds to consider current perceptions and practices regarding literacy in U.S. classrooms and the trend towards teaching and learning literacy and a distinct set of technical and functional knowledge and skills that are often taught in isolation. The article then examines conceptions of critical literacy and considers connections to social studies education. Finally, …

Role Of Language In Foreign Students ' Adjustment Process In The Study Of Introductory Accounting Courses, Said Juma Suluo
Business Management Review
This study examines the role of language in facilitating the foreign students ' adjustment process in the study of introductory accounting courses at the University of Dar es Salaam Business School. Data were collected through focus group discussions and interviews and then analysed thematically. The findings generally show that introductory accounting courses posed challenged and, as such, collaboration among students was perceived to be the most successful study strategy. However, foreign students could not successfully collaborate with their local counterparts due to their lack of aptitude in the local language, Kiswahili, coupled with the local students ' preferring to use …

Economic Determinants Of Communal Conflict: Evidence From Indonesia, Edgar Demetrio García, Indra Prasetya Adi Nugroho
Economic Determinants Of Communal Conflict: Evidence From Indonesia, Edgar Demetrio García, Indra Prasetya Adi Nugroho
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Religion, ethnicity, and politics are typical explanatory variables of violent conflicts. From an economic point of view, economic growth reduces the risk of civil war, yet the economic determinants of conflict have been little studied. In this article, we empirically study the impact of regional macroeconomic conditions on the number of violent conflicts in Indonesia, a country with potential risks of communal conflict because of the plurality of its society. We use panel data consisting of observations on 16 Indonesian regions from 2004 to 2013 to assess the impact of economic factors on conflict, reevaluating the religion effect using dynamic …

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This article analyses the relationship between discourse and identity in the case of the People’s Republic of China in Africa. It assumes that the interests of the Chinese government in Africa can be understood from a theoretical constructivist approach. So, the activities of International Development Cooperation of China into Africa are a result of material and ideational aspirations. Thus, the ties of China in Africa have been boosted by the identity of the Chinese state in the international arena. To understand how identity and interest are linked, this article analyses the official discourse of China in Forum on China Africa …

Study Of Quranic Readings In Ibn Aqil’S Commentary On Ibn Malik’S Alfiyyah, Sereen Hussein Kazem
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The early grammarians exerted extensive effort after establishing the rules of Arabic grammar, as they began to extrapolate the language from its primary sources: the Holy Quran and its recitations, poetry, the speech of eloquent Arabs, and proverbs. In their extrapolation, they sought correctness, precision, and comprehensiveness. The grammatical evidence they took to strengthen a grammatical rule, establish a rule they derived, or a linguistic ruling they arrived at. Ibn Malik’s Alfiyyah is one of the grammatical systems that scholars and students have eagerly memorized, studied, and explained for several centuries. Its popularity has led to a clear abundance of …

Convertability And Oil Resistance Of Paperboard With Hydroxypropyl-Cellulose-Based Dispersion Barrier Coatings, Ville Leminen, Sami-Seppo C. Ovaska, Panu Tanninen, Juha Varis
Journal of Applied Packaging Research
The convertability and barrier properties of paperboard coated with hydroxypropyl-cellulose (HPC) based dispersions were studied via tray pressing trials, oil resistance measurements and microscopic analyses. To improve the oil resistance of the HPC-based coatings and to maximize their convertability, talc, gelatin and latex were used as additives in coating formulations. The oil resistance of the coatings improved to some extent with these additives, but scanning electron micrographs revealed the existence of pinholes particularly in coatings with a high HPC content. The coated paperboard samples were pressed into rectangular trays and the convertability of the paperboards was evaluated with a microscope. …

Using Literature Circles To Increase Reading Comprehension And Student Motivation, Michelle Jacobs
Using Literature Circles To Increase Reading Comprehension And Student Motivation, Michelle Jacobs
Theses and Dissertations
Many educators arrange students in guided reading groups based on their reading lexile. Usually the books selected for guided reading are from a basal reading series and are used to teach different reading components and strategies. However, the books don’t always reflect student cultures, making it difficult for students to hold discussions and make connections. Oftentimes, students are unmotivated to read the assigned books and rarely engage in discussions. Based on research conducted by Daniels (2006), when kids are engaged in well-structured book clubs their comprehension and their attitude towards reading both improve. With ongoing changes in education, educators must …

Theses and Dissertations
"Archival Enactment, Retelling 'The Big Book': Alison Knowles, Something Else Press and Fluxus," positions Knowles’ Big Book (1966) as a case study of historical methodology and interdisciplinary artistic practice in the post-war period. This comprehensive analysis of Big Book, a work of art no longer extant, contextualizes its publisher, Something Else Press through Dick Higgins’ concept of “intermedia,” and important lesser-known junctures relevant to Fluxus and the group’s leader George Maciunas are illuminated. Knowles' early and lesser-known silkscreen paintings are also examined.

The Importance Of Maintaining A Heritage Language While Acquiring The Host Language, Anna L. Vallance
Honors College Theses
Few issues are as relevant to modern education as the topic of bilingual students. As the school-age population in the United States becomes increasingly diverse, teachers and other educational professionals need to know how they can best serve their English learners (students who speak a first language other than English). A common question that many educators grapple with is what role a student’s heritage language (native language) ought to play in the classroom. Specifically, how important is it that students maintain their heritage language? By critically reviewing the existing literature relating to the subject, this article strives to answer that …

Translating Transformative Human Rights Education Through Visual Languages & Informal Spaces, Jazzmin Chizu Gota
Master's Projects and Capstones
This project examines methods, theories, and practices of translating human rights education through multiple vernaculars. Developed as a workshop in sociocultural syntax deconstruction and an educational human rights education website focused on the domestic population of the US, the project focuses on localizing human rights concepts to the public vernacular of the country. Human rights education (HRE) and media and information literacy (MIL) are expanded and redefined as social literacy, or the ability to navigate and decode the present, complex realities that both HRE and MIL were developed to address. Reframing media and visual arts as an archive of past …
Getting Off The Track To Found – The Influence Of Path Dependence On The Entrepreneurial Process, Philipp Berger, Jörg Freiling
Getting Off The Track To Found – The Influence Of Path Dependence On The Entrepreneurial Process, Philipp Berger, Jörg Freiling
European Management Studies
T he concept of path dependence describes mechanisms which can lead organizations to a lock-in on a certain path of development. Sydow et al. (2009) describe four basic self-reinforcing mechanisms (learning effects, adaptive expectations, coordination effects and complementary effects) and argue how they can lead to organizational lock-in along three distinct phases. This study investigates the influence of these mechanisms within the entrepreneurial venture creation process (Berger 2015c) and concludes in an argumentation that this process is by no means a determined path. Instead, the forces of path dependence actually lead entities out of the entrepreneurial gestation process in each …

Folklore can be defined as “context, performance, attitude, cultural tastes, and the like” (Toelken, 1996, p.7). With folktale and fairy tales, these stories embody cultural values and morals, aiding in learning a lesson or to keep intact a cultural tradition. Many works of literature serve as models for studies in folklore, offering literary criticism, while allowing ancient traditions and modern traditions to be explored (Toelken, 1996, p. 391). Additionally, most, if not all, written folklore, folktales, and fairy tales were originally passed down verbally, from one generation to the next; these stories are part of oral histories (Toelken, 1996). Many …
Health Care Service Disparity: Factors Associated With The Distribution Of Primary Care Physicians, Robert L. Morgan
Health Care Service Disparity: Factors Associated With The Distribution Of Primary Care Physicians, Robert L. Morgan
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Primary care physicians operate on the front lines of health care. Although primary care physicians play a critical role in improving health outcomes, workforce trends in the United States show a growing shortage of primary care physicians as demand for primary care rises. In conveying the importance of primary care physicians, the worsening physician shortage, the inequitable distribution of providers, and the lackluster institutional response thus far, this paper calls into question the effectiveness of current indicators used to identify underserved areas and provide appropriate government assistance. Through the use of data from the 2010 census and American Medical Association …

This Article has five parts. Part I sets out and adopts the basic premises of the jurisprudential perspective championed by Professor Reisman and sketches his argument that legal solutions can always be fashioned in a meaningful and realistic manner. Part II discusses the development of ISIL in the Middle East. Part III analyzes the lawlessness problem created by ISIL for the affected local communities and explains how loss of control, left unattended, transforms into a loss of authority of prescription by destroying the social fabric needed for legal processes to have meaning. Part IV develops how municipal lawlessness has a …

For a 1989 interview, posted on Banyan’s website and captured in the videotape Footprints (1992), George Lamming is photographed on the shores of his homeland. Lamming stands on the East Coast of Barbados as a littoral figure. In the first image, he smiles at the camera as he looks inland. The horizon is seen over his shoulders, along with a wave cresting against the large rock in the middle-right panel of the photograph. In the second photograph, he faces the horizon. In this latter image, pointing at the horizon, he directs his attention and that of his interviewer to the …
