Unveiling Fantasy In The American Gothic, Olga Jacqueline Neroni
Unveiling Fantasy In The American Gothic, Olga Jacqueline Neroni
English
In The Plague of Fantasies, Slavoj Žižek charts the relationship between theoretical ideology, fantasy, and ideology in practice. While ideology roots itself firmly in our lives—it crafts our very reality according to Žižek—it is a paradoxically fragile and self-destructive system of interacting symbols. We consume and perpetuate fantasy in order to elucidate and internalize the laws of ideology by placing these symbols into dialogue with one another. In turn, fantasy often draws these laws to their conceptual edge, granting bodies and voices to the underlying fears and desires implied by these symbols. Edgar Allan Poe’s “Ligeia” and William Faulkner’s The …
Visualizing Borges: Figures Of Interpretation, Kempton John Cox
Visualizing Borges: Figures Of Interpretation, Kempton John Cox
Theses and Dissertations
In this work I explore the geometry found both in the narrative structures and the internal shapes proposed in Jorge Luis Borges’ short stories and seek to arrive at new interpretations of those works by mapping out—in graphical form—the shapes found therein. I move from basic two-dimensional shapes (lines, triangles, quadrilaterals) to those involving the element of temporality and atemporality (circles, interruptive loops, chiasmus) to shapes dealing with repetition—both geometric and temporal—and eternity (labyrinths, fractals, and Alephs). In each case and for each short story analyzed, either an existent interpretation is favored or a new interpretation is set forth.
The Effects Of Deficits In Emotional Self-Regulation On Relationship Satisfaction In Young Adults, Murphy Harrell
The Effects Of Deficits In Emotional Self-Regulation On Relationship Satisfaction In Young Adults, Murphy Harrell
USC Aiken Psychology Theses
Effective emotional self-regulation is essential for evaluating a situation, giving meaning to the experience and to regulate emotions in order to achieve a desired goal. Emotional selfregulation is an essential feature of executive functioning, which affects a number of functional domains across the lifespan and is specifically important for sustaining healthy interpersonal relationships. Research to date shows that adults with ADHD and emotional dysregulation have poor social relationships, due to a variety of problems such as: not following social norms, missing nonverbal cues, interrupting conversations, not following through with promises, appearing inpatient or rude, and not thinking before speaking. Despite …
The Tower Of Babel Account: A Linguistic Consideration, Dallin D. Oaks
The Tower Of Babel Account: A Linguistic Consideration, Dallin D. Oaks
Faculty Publications
The biblical account of the Tower of Babel has generally not been taken seriously by scholars in historical linguistics, but what are regarded by some as problematic aspects of the account may actually relate to claims that have been incorrectly attributed to the account. In fact, the account may not be reporting a sudden· and immediate confusion of languages, or even a sequence in which a confusion of languages led to a scattering of the people. Indeed, a close examination of the account seems to allow an interpretation of events that is compatible with what linguists have observed about [how …

Dreams And Identity: A Self-Study Using Dream Imagery And Analysis To Explore Relationships And Identity Development, Jasmine S. Jackson
EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers
For this self-study, I explored the use of art-making and reflective writing in the analysis of my dreams over a nine-week period. A review of the literature discussed the historical and contemporary use of dreams and their relevance to art therapy and counseling. The importance of self-awareness for emerging art therapists was highlighted, as well as the use of dreams, journaling, and art-making to facilitate this process. The results showed that working with dream imagery helped me gain insight on depression, fear, relationships, communication patterns, and sexual identity. Art-making and reflective writing were effective tools for analyzing dreams, identifying problems …
Art Therapy With A Patient With Schizoaffective Disorder, Caroline Cheslak
Art Therapy With A Patient With Schizoaffective Disorder, Caroline Cheslak
EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers
People with disorders on the schizophrenia spectrum require treatment and care which are often needed for the duration of that person's life. While medication and traditional therapy are somewhat effective, some symptoms of the disorder often remain. In addition, there are often difficulties in the treatment of this population, which include non-compliance, lack of insight about the disorder and treatment, and distrust of the therapist. Research suggests that art therapy is somewhat effective in the treatment of some of the symptoms of disorders on the schizophrenia spectrum such as low sense of self, the effect of negative stigma, negative symptoms, …

EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers
Children and adolescents having a diagnosis that affects their development and social interactions, such as ASD, face many challenges in a school setting. These challenges can include socially appropriate interactions with their peers, disruptive behaviors, language and intellectual impairments, sensory integration problems, understanding emotional responses, and learning skills (Bellini, 2004; Brereton, Tonge & Einfeld, 2006). Specific art therapy interventions, processes, and materials can provide motivating and engaging opportunities for individuals with ASD to increase social and emotional skills and it addresses individuals’ psychological needs (Martin, 2009b). This clinical case report will describe the assessment and treatment of a 12-year-old male …

EVMS School of Health Professions Master's Level Capstones, Projects and Papers
This exploratory self-study utilized the tool of dream journaling along with visual and written reflections to record my art therapy and counseling graduate school experience in order to foster professional identity development. Visual reflections on dream journals were created weekly during an eight-week period. Qualitative data, including eight visual reflections and corresponding written haiku responses and artist statements, were analyzed in order to extract patterns and themes from my overall experience. Dream journaling combined with the reflection process was found to foster professional identity development through personal growth and insight.

Active Semi-Supervised Defect Categorization, Ferdian Thung, Xuan-Bach D. Le, David Lo
Active Semi-Supervised Defect Categorization, Ferdian Thung, Xuan-Bach D. Le, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Defects are inseparable part of software development and evolution. To better comprehend problems affecting a software system, developers often store historical defects and these defects can be categorized into families. IBM proposes Orthogonal Defect Categorization (ODC) which include various classifications of defects based on a number of orthogonal dimensions (e.g., symptoms and semantics of defects, root causes of defects, etc.). To help developers categorize defects, several approaches that employ machine learning have been proposed in the literature. Unfortunately, these approaches often require developers to manually label a large number of defect examples. In practice, manually labelling a large number of …

Improvements in image understanding technologies aremaking it possible for computers to pass traditionalCAPTCHA tests with high probability. This suggests theneed for new kinds of tasks that are easy to accomplishfor humans but remain difficult for computers. In thispaper, we introduce Fluency CAPTCHA (FluTCHA), anovel method to distinguish humans from computersusing the fact that humans are better than machines atimproving the fluency of sentences. We propose a wayto let users work on FluTCHA tests and simultaneouslycomplete useful linguistic tasks. Evaluation studiesdemonstrate the feasibility of using FluTCHA todistinguish humans from computers.
Partnerships Through Adult Education: Re-Conceptualizing Family Literacy In The New Latino Diaspora, Jennifer Leigh Stacy
Partnerships Through Adult Education: Re-Conceptualizing Family Literacy In The New Latino Diaspora, Jennifer Leigh Stacy
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Schools are complex social institutions that mediate the experiences of newcomer families in the US. In recent years, a body of scholarship known as New Latino Diaspora has followed the migration of Latino families as they have moved away from traditional gateway communities and settled into territories that have previously been home to few, if any, Latino families. As a result, both institutionalized and grassroots educational initiatives have emerged as vehicles to support newcomer families as they learn English and adapt to living in a new community. This dissertation looks at the cultural space of a family literacy program that …
Transcendental Sense And A Playful Approach: The Treaty Of Waitangi, Richard Dawson
Transcendental Sense And A Playful Approach: The Treaty Of Waitangi, Richard Dawson
Mercer Law Review

My experience of reading Jack Sammons has resembled an OE [overseas experience]. In particular, I became aware of some taken-for-granted language that can conceal important dynamics in our engagement with language. I had explicitly identified some virtues relating to exercising "control" over language but had, as Sammons suggested, neglected possible vices. In order to avoid these vices, I could alter attention from "control" to "play," in the sense of a movement that can combine control with the out-of-control. (There are some virtues associated with the out-of-control, such as openness and receptivity.). Such play does not lend itself well to …

Evaluating An Oral Draft Of Luke 8:4-15 In Uduk, Jeremy N. Harrison
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
This doctor of ministry thesis presents the findings of a project in which I led a group of immigrants from South Sudan through the process of generating and evaluating an oral draft of Luke 8:4-15 in Uduk. The aim of this project was to provide a substantive field test of an oral translation methodology conducted among immigrants living in the United States who speak a language that lacks a translation of the entire Bible. The project involved facilitating basic translation training and conducting an oral drafting process with a team of three Uduk speakers. This project also involved evaluating the …
Embedding Nationalism: Construction & Effects Of National Narratives In The Xxvii Olympic Games' Opening Ceremony, Rachel Elizabeth Presley
Embedding Nationalism: Construction & Effects Of National Narratives In The Xxvii Olympic Games' Opening Ceremony, Rachel Elizabeth Presley
Theses - ALL
This thesis examines the construction and effects of the XXVII Olympic Games’ opening ceremony as a national narrative, scripted by and for the state. The performance’s chronological structure and staging of its characters have profound effects on how Australian bodies are read and remembered as citizens. The ceremony’s narrative features a distorted retelling of colonial history that produces enormous consequences in how Indigenous and non-Indigenous, male and female actors are presented. An analysis of these characters reveals how the national narrative comes to function as a piece of political propaganda that perpetuates idealized forms of citizenship within a hegemonic patriarchal …

Localizing The International: Examining How Fieldworkers Combat Adolescent Pregnancy In Northern Ghana, Alexandra C. Sloss
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
International aid is often ineffective because it is delivered without an understanding of local ideologies and contexts. My Capstone examined whether or not international aid in northern Ghana could be effective when addressing adolescent pregnancy. The Ghanaian programs I address in my Capstone are six non-governmental organizations, a government sub-district clinic and government junior high schools. The majority of my data was collected through interviews with individuals at all levels of the organizations, including directors, staff members, volunteers and individuals seeking the organization’s services. Alongside interviews I also spent time in the field, participating in youth group discussions, visiting regional …
From Maus To Magneto: Exploring Holocaust Representation In Comic Books And Graphic Novels, Rachel Elizabeth Mandel
From Maus To Magneto: Exploring Holocaust Representation In Comic Books And Graphic Novels, Rachel Elizabeth Mandel
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The following Capstone project documents my research into the topic of Holocaust representation in comic books and graphic novels. Comics are an oft-overlooked medium in academic circles, so there is a distinct lack of scholarly works examining comics outside the fields of pop culture studies or comics art studies. As a result, outside of works like Art Spiegelman’s Maus, the phenomenon of Holocaust representation in comics is relatively uncategorized and unexamined. It was my intention in this project to demonstrate that comics are a legitimate medium for depicting and analyzing the Holocaust both as a historical event and through …

The approach chosen was a case study using ethnographic methodology consisting of classroom and home observations, teacher and student interviews, a survey, and formative and summative assessments. During the course of the study, it emerged that he has dyslexia. The issues in dealing with a dyslexic student were therefore also …
Speech Reading Training And Audio-Visual Integration In A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kara L. Saulsbury
Speech Reading Training And Audio-Visual Integration In A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kara L. Saulsbury
Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders Undergraduate Honors Theses
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) typically have deficits in communication abilities. Deficits include social, linguistic, and pragmatic difficulties and difficulties in the ability to perceive and integrate audiovisual (AV) stimuli. It is also common for those with ASD to have weaker speech reading skills as compared to typically developing, age-matched peers. Speech reading skills are known to enhance speech perception in naturalistic, noisy environments. In children with ASD, the combination of both poor AV integration and poor speech reading is thought to have significant effects on vocabulary acquisition. Studies have demonstrated that speech reading training can significantly enhance syllable …
Separation And Identification Of Bioactive Compounds From Oplopanax Horridus, Christina Nicole Bailey
Separation And Identification Of Bioactive Compounds From Oplopanax Horridus, Christina Nicole Bailey
All Theses
For centuries, natural products, such as plants, have been used for the prevention and treatment of diseases and ailments. Modern science is now working to identify the beneficial compounds from these sources to implement into pharmaceutical drugs, vitamins or supplements in an area of study called nutraceuticals. The plant Oplopanax horridus, or Devil's Club is a member of the ginseng family and has over 30 documented uses for spiritual and medicinal purposes. The few studies that have been carried out on this plant are limited to the volatile chemicals present. Few studies have determined the plant possesses antifungal, antioxidant and …
Reader Interrupted: Poetry As Thing In The Lyrical Works Of Emily Dickinson, Sarah Katherine Melchers
Reader Interrupted: Poetry As Thing In The Lyrical Works Of Emily Dickinson, Sarah Katherine Melchers
All Theses
This paper stemmed from a desire to place Dickinson's poetry in conversation within the broader discourse of Thing Theory, namely using Bill Brown, Theodor Adorno, and Jane Bennett collectively. These claims derive as well from my own experiences in reading Dickinson's poetry: those times when faced with delightful frustration, enjoyably utter-confusion, followed closely by a frantic desire to understand at all costs. Dickinson's poetry is that which truly 'plunge[s]' us 'for a moment into [a] torrent of sensation' (Santayana 260). Nestled somewhere between my chest and my gut, there is this unnamable feeling that arrests me in a physical way, …

Visual Speech Recognition Using Histogram Of Oriented Displacements, Sujeeth Selvam Kumaravel
All Theses
Lip reading is the recognition of spoken words from the visual information of lips. It has been of considerable interest in the Computer Vision and Speech Recognition communities to automate this process using computer algorithms. In this thesis, we have developed a novel method involving describing visual features using fixed length descriptors called Histogram of Oriented Displacements to which we apply Support Vector Machines for recognition of spoken words. Using this method on the CUAVE database we have achieved a recognition rate of 81%.
The School Based Health Center Design Guidelines, Anna Kim
The School Based Health Center Design Guidelines, Anna Kim
All Theses
School Based Health Centers (SBHC) have traditionally gone unacknowledged for their support in providing essential healthcare services to underserved school-aged children. The well-being of these students and their communities rely heavily on a safe, efficient and encouraging physical and responsive environment for successful health outcomes. Literature reveals that the negative health and intricate social issues that face the American youth are stunting growth in academic performance and promoting high risk health behaviors through adulthood. To help eliminate the difficulty in access to healthcare for the underserved, healthcare must be brought to them. The School Based Health Center represents a unique …
Investigating Students' Use Of Multiple Representations Of The Arrow-Pushing Formalism, Yu Shen
Investigating Students' Use Of Multiple Representations Of The Arrow-Pushing Formalism, Yu Shen
All Theses
Over decades, research in STEM education has been conducted to investigate how students translate from one representation to another. Based on dual coding theory, multiple external representations (MERs) can be effective when the verbal/linguistic representations are provided along with the corresponded diagrammatic/pictorial representations. However, little is known about the difficulties that undergraduate students encounter when translating between the verbal and diagrammatic representations in the context of the arrow-pushing formalism used in organic reaction descriptions. Chemists use the arrow-pushing formalism to represent the electron flow in organic mechanistic processes. Yet, far less is known about the meaning that undergraduate students attribute …

Re-Shaping Our Vision Of Intimate Partner Violence: A Qualitative Analysis Of Survivors' Reaction To Existing Campaigns, Erin Alexandra Neal
All Theses
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2003), an estimated 5.3 million incidents of intimate partner violence (IPV) occur each year in the United States, resulting in nearly 2 million injuries, and approximately 1,300 deaths. Additionally, The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (2011) found that 1 in 3 women (35.6%) have experienced sexual and/or physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner. More attention has been paid to IPV in the past two decades, resulting in an increase in the number of prevention and intervention mass media campaigns; however, very few campaigns report consulting survivors …
