Faded Dinosaurs And Closed Puppies: More Mixed And Mashed Metaphors, Don Hauptman May 2015

Faded Dinosaurs And Closed Puppies: More Mixed And Mashed Metaphors, Don Hauptman

Word Ways

David Carr, the prominent journalist who died earlier this year, wrote in one of his final columns: "Contrast that with Verizon, whose efforts to dip a toe into publishing turned out to be all thumbs." Mixed metaphors are usually errors, In this case, however, Carr used the device intentionally for effect.

New Puzzles On Knight-Graphable Words, Mike Keith, Tristan Miller

Word Ways

In a previous article we examined some properties of knight-graphable words. A word is knight-graphable (NG) if the distinct letters of the alphabet used in the word can be placed on separate squares of an arbitrarily large chessboard such that a chess knight can spell out the word by starting on the square labelled with the word's first letter and making a series of knight's moves to the successive letters in the word.

Doubling Up, Steve Kahan May 2015

Doubling Up, Steve Kahan

Word Ways

In baseball, a speedy runner can sometimes transform a single into a double by "turning up the jets." An analogous metamorphosis in the world of wordplay creates a new specimen from an old one by replacing one of its interior letters with two copies of the same. For instance, GRIPE becomes GRIPPE when the letter "P" is doubled up.

New Typewriter Words, Darryl Francis May 2015

New Typewriter Words, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

In his Language on Vacation, Dmitri Borgmann drew attention to what he called "typewriter words." Dmitri posed various questions about the longest words which could be typed on the different rows of the typewriter keyboard, words which could be typed entirely by the left hand and words which could be typed entirely by the right hand. As 2015 is the 50th anniversary of the publication of Language on Vacation, it's worth revisiting some of Dmitri's findings.

Aristotle’S Category Construction And The Why Behind It, Margaret Rae Titcomb May 2015

Aristotle’S Category Construction And The Why Behind It, Margaret Rae Titcomb

Akadimia Filosofia

Aristotle’s Categoriae, or the Categories, is a comprehensive classification system for every object of human understanding that can be either a subject or a predicate of a proposition. There are ten categories: Substance, Quantity, Qualification, Relative/Relation, Place, Time, Position, State (Condition), Action, and Affection. The first part of this paper will explain each of the categories in the order in which they are presented in the chapters of Categoriae. The second half of the paper will discuss the question of ambiguity in the approach Aristotle uses to both construct and find meaning in these categories. Fr. Joseph …

War, Kyle Pritz May 2015

War, Kyle Pritz

Akadimia Filosofia

This paper is an effective meditation on the morality and justification of war. Moreover, this paper explores the ways in which war is a pointless concept, an endeavor that can never be justified and is certainly not brought on by the everyday person. Rather, war is an exercise of power that only benefits the rich elite and the powerful authority figures of the world. We must strive to reveal the underlying truth in our social reactions, that we always have the power to find peace and resolve differences. Only then can we finally move beyond war.

Teachers As World-Makers In The Digital Age, Abby De Groot May 2015

Teachers As World-Makers In The Digital Age, Abby De Groot

Master of Education Program Theses

Despite enormous gains in educational technology and access to information, today’s students still struggle with digital literacy. In fact, some argue that today’s students are so distracted by digital media that their literacy skills are falling behind previous generations. In order to combat this phenomenon, researchers have singled out certain critical literacy skills for today’s students that, when taught effectively, will help those students develop into competent and productive adults: collaboration, composition, attention, evaluation, and responsibility. This study highlights and analyzes this important literacy research in order to help teachers better equip their twenty-first century students. Christian teachers especially should …

Differentiated Instruction: Strategies For English Language Learners Listening Comprehension Development, Stefanie Moreno May 2015

Differentiated Instruction: Strategies For English Language Learners Listening Comprehension Development, Stefanie Moreno

Master’s Theses and Projects

Differentiated Instruction is a hot topic right now and teachers need to keep up with the changes in the educational system. The one-size-fits-all approach that we have being dealing with for so long, no longer fits the needs, preferences and learning styles of our students. Teachers need to differentiate instruction and provide students with different avenues of learning in order to maximize their learning process. Because more attention and practice is needed on listening skills, knowledge in differentiated instruction and the different strategies to teach listening skills can be used together to help develop English language learners listening comprehension skills. …

Adapting The Process Writing Approach To English Language Learners With Special Needs: Using Visuals, Lindinalva Lima

Master’s Theses and Projects

The available literature on the writing characteristics and best practices to teach writing to English Language Learners who also present some disability is scarce. In order to understand and provide some insight on the developments in this field, I propose an adaptation of the Process Writing Approach based on a literature review of the existing bibliography about the writing characteristics of English Language Learners, Special Needs Learners, and English Language Learners with Special Needs’ writing, the effects of the Process Writing Approach in teaching writing to these groups, and the use of visuals in writing instruction. The main assumptions of …

Alternative Assessment Of Writing In Learning English As A Foreign Language: Analytical Scoring And Self-Assessment, Lenite Silva Lopes May 2015

Alternative Assessment Of Writing In Learning English As A Foreign Language: Analytical Scoring And Self-Assessment, Lenite Silva Lopes

Master’s Theses and Projects

While the educational benefits of alternative assessment are being increasingly recognized and alternative assessment procedures introduced into the different educational levels, in Cape Verde, many EFL teachers are not aware of its importance. The main purpose of this thesis is to synthesize and review the available literature on alternative assessment tools to evaluate the writing of EFL students of Cape Verde secondary schools. The issue of accurate and fair assessment of students writing probably constitutes the major dilemma in both L1 and L2 writing fields, and EFL field is not an exception. The paper also aims to make Cape Verdean …

The Relationship Between Teachers And Students In The Classroom: Communicative Language Teaching Approach And Cooperative Learning Strategy To Improve Learning, Fredson Soares Dos Reis Da Luz May 2015

The Relationship Between Teachers And Students In The Classroom: Communicative Language Teaching Approach And Cooperative Learning Strategy To Improve Learning, Fredson Soares Dos Reis Da Luz

Master’s Theses and Projects

The aim of this research is to investigate how a supportive relationship between teachers and students in the classroom can improve the learning process. By having a good relationship with students, teachers can offer to students chances to be motivated and feel engaged in the learning process. Students will be engaged actively in the learning instead of being passive learners. I wish to investigate how using communicative approach and cooperative learning strategies while teaching do affect and improve students’ learning performance. To achieve these goals qualitative data collection was used as the primary method. The results show that teachers and …

Study On The Evaluation Of Uav Disaster Monitoring System Architecture Based On The Rsbfnn Algorithmic Method, Zhifei Li, Yifan Zhu, Feng Yang, Wenguang Wang

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In disaster monitoring, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming more suitable than earth observing satellites and manned helicopters, especially in emergent situations. However, decisions must be made as to which attributes the UAV must possess when developing new models. Combined with NOLH experiment design and multi-agent simulation (MAS) technology, a new architecture evaluation method, termed Rough Set Based Fuzzy Neural Network (RSBFNN), is proposed to simulate and analyze both the UAV attributes and desired effectiveness. Experimental results show that this method is very dependable when comparing predicted and actual responses and yields better performance than other models. This method best …

Classifications And Properties Of (Α,Β )-Fuzzy Ideals In Ternary Semigroups, Noor Rehman, Muhammd Shabir, Young Bae Jun May 2015

Classifications And Properties Of (Α,Β )-Fuzzy Ideals In Ternary Semigroups, Noor Rehman, Muhammd Shabir, Young Bae Jun

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Classifications of (a,b )-fuzzy left (right and lateral) ideals of ternary semigroups are discussed. Relations between (∈,∈ ∨q)-fuzzy left (right and lateral) ideals and (q,∈∨q)-fuzzy left (right and lateral) ideals are established. Given special sets, so called t-q-set and t-∈∨q-set, conditions for the t-q-set and t-∈∨q-set to be left (right and lateral) ideals are considered. Conditions for a fuzzy set to be an (∈,q)-fuzzy left (right and lateral) ideals, a (q,∈)-fuzzy left (right and lateral)ideals and a (q,∈∨q)-fuzzy left (right and lateral) ideals are considered. Some new characterizations of weakly regular ternary semigroups are also established. Finally, the implication-based fuzzy …

To utilize the reviews effectively, researchers are working on necessary methods and ideas such as classification of positive and negative sense of reviews, ranking the facet in the reviews to make the effective classification etc. This study aims to propose a novel facet identification namely Facet Based Adjective identification method (FBAI) for efficient feature selection of reviews. The next algorithm FacetRank marks facet of each opinion from review set with positive, …

A New Generalization Of Fuzzy Ideals Of Ternary Semigroups, Noor Rehman, Muhammad Shabir May 2015

A New Generalization Of Fuzzy Ideals Of Ternary Semigroups, Noor Rehman, Muhammad Shabir

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Our aim in this paper is to introduce and study a new sort of fuzzy ternary subsemigroup (left ideal, right ideal, lateral ideal, quasi-ideal, bi-ideal) of a ternary semigroup, called interval-valued (a,b )-fuzzy ternary subsemigroup (left ideal, right ideal, lateral ideal, quasi-ideal, bi-ideal). We also characterize regular ternary semigroups in terms of these interval-valued fuzzy ideals.
