"Just Look At Her!": Sporting Bodies As Athletic Resistance And The Limits Of Sport Norms In The Case Of Caster Semenya, Shane Miller
"Just Look At Her!": Sporting Bodies As Athletic Resistance And The Limits Of Sport Norms In The Case Of Caster Semenya, Shane Miller
Strategic Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Using the American sport media’s treatment of South African runner Caster Semenya, this article explores how in the course of defending Caster Semenya the American sport media presented a rigorous challenge to traditional conceptions of sex and gender. Yet these rhetorical efforts to deconstruct sex and gender binaries were undermined by the specific ways in which Semenya’s dual performances—athletic and gender—were visually depicted. A close reading and analysis of US sports media coverage of Caster Semenya provide an opportunity to explore the ways in which the norms of sport may foster progressive treatment of athletes whose genders do not fit …

Public Relations In Government-Based Public Health: Testing Contingency Theory During H1n1 Response, 2009-2010, Terri Lea Sasser
Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study is to describe public relations programs in state and local government-based health departments nationwide. Using the H1N1 communications and public relations activities as a frame, or basis of comparison, this study will further seek to identify if Contingency Theory of public relations may be an apt descriptor of public relations activities during this particular response effort. This study uses Contingency Theory as a theoretical perspective to explain the strategic management of the organization-public relationships and add to the body of knowledge about Contingency Theory of public relations in the field of health communications. Contingency …

Exploring The Delivery Of Swimming And Water Safety Teacher Training To Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Communities, Melissa Anne Savage, Richard C. Franklin
Exploring The Delivery Of Swimming And Water Safety Teacher Training To Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Communities, Melissa Anne Savage, Richard C. Franklin
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The dearth of information on the delivery of specific culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) programs presents a major limitation in the effort to prevent drowning, particularly when drowning rates of people from countries other than Australia are increasing. This study describes programs delivered by the aquatic industry for CALD communities in New South Wales (NSW), explores what CALD communities believe their water safety education needs are, and evaluates AUSTSWIM’s current training methods to ascertain which is most effective when training candidates from CALD communities. We found an absence of specialized aquatic programs being run at aquatic facilities for CALD communities. …

Gender And Climate Change In The Indian Himalayas: Global Threats, Local Vulnerabilities, And Livelihood Diversification At The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, Monica V. Ogra, Ruchi Badola
Gender And Climate Change In The Indian Himalayas: Global Threats, Local Vulnerabilities, And Livelihood Diversification At The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, Monica V. Ogra, Ruchi Badola
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Global climate change has numerous implications for members of mountain communities who feel the impacts in both physical and social dimensions. In the western Himalayas of India, a majority of residents maintain a livelihood strategy that includes a combination of subsistence or small-scale agriculture, livestock rearing, seasonal or long-term migration, and localized natural resource extraction. While warming temperatures, irregular patterns of precipitation and snowmelt, and changing biological systems present challenges to the viability of these traditional livelihood portfolios in general, we find that climate change is also undermining local communities’ livelihood assets in gender-specific ways. In this paper, we present …
Latina Mothers' Expectations And Perceptions About A Dual Language Education In The Rio Grande Valley, Rosalinda A. Cobarrubias
Latina Mothers' Expectations And Perceptions About A Dual Language Education In The Rio Grande Valley, Rosalinda A. Cobarrubias
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The initial purpose of this study was to identify Latino parents’ expectations and perceptions of a dual language program in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. All of the Latino parents of children in one dual language program were invited to participate in the study. The parents who agreed to participate in the study were all mothers. Consequently, only the perceptions and expectations of Latina mothers were explored. The chosen method of this study was qualitative research to explore the expectations and perceptions of the dual language program of twenty Latina mothers of Mexican descent. There were eleven English dominant Latina …

I intend this thesis to be a narration of my thoughts about the artwork I create. This thesis is divided into two parts. In part one, I explore the conceptual aspects of my work and discuss my use of fragments, grids and context, and why the formal qualities of my work are derived from semiotics. In part two, I discuss six bodies of work. | 39 pages
The Feminine Aesthetic Of Failure: Negative Female Subjectivity In The Modern Novel, Anne Cunningham
The Feminine Aesthetic Of Failure: Negative Female Subjectivity In The Modern Novel, Anne Cunningham
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
" The Feminine Aesthetic of Failure: Negative Female Subjectivity in the Modern Novel" examines how the failure to adhere to restrictive codes of normative femininity functions as a form of feminist critique in novels by women modernists published during the interwar period. In these novels, issues of gender identity and the development of literary modernism intersect with a distinct feminine aesthetic and rhetoric of failure. In arguing for this feminine aesthetic of failure, I consider five works by four authors: Virginia Woolf's The Voyage Out (1915), Nella Larsen's Quicksand (1928), Jean Rhys's After Leaving Mr Mackenzie (1930) and Voyage in …
From The Plantation Zone: The Poetics Of A Black Matrilineal Genealogy For The Americas, Eileen S. Chanza Torres
From The Plantation Zone: The Poetics Of A Black Matrilineal Genealogy For The Americas, Eileen S. Chanza Torres
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In the Humanities, studies on the legacy of enslaved Black women are often split along ethnic, cultural, linguistic and national lines. My dissertation brings together literatures and visual arts from Puerto Rico, Martinique, Suriname, the Dominican Republic and the U.S. representing a myriad of linguistic and cultural traditions that turn to the legacy of the historical Black female body as their myth of creation. I position these works under the heading of Plantation Zone Literatures and Visual Arts, a term I use to indicate the centrality of Black women's genealogy in 20th-century and 21st-century works from the Black Diaspora. Once …
Marginal Forms And Marginalized Subjectivities: The Hybrid Modernisms Of Barnes, Woolf, Stein, And H.D., Meghan C. Fox
Marginal Forms And Marginalized Subjectivities: The Hybrid Modernisms Of Barnes, Woolf, Stein, And H.D., Meghan C. Fox
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation examines the relationship between literary modernism's mixed-genre forms and its representations of marginalized characters through a study of works by Djuna Barnes, Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein, and H.D. I argue that these authors borrow from various established genres to create new hybrid forms capable of granting fuller expression to the female and queer subjects of the early twentieth century. Though scholars took up hybridity as a way to theorize postcolonial identities and forms of resistance in the 1990s, this project reveals that the aforementioned modernist authors began to strategically deploy forms of hybrid subjectivity decades earlier. A Pfennig Saved: The Complexity Behind The Self-Perceived Saving Behavior Of German Speakers, Shane Sloan
A Pfennig Saved: The Complexity Behind The Self-Perceived Saving Behavior Of German Speakers, Shane Sloan
2015 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
This study examined German savings behavior in the light of the recent European Union financial crises and Chen (2013), whose research linked language structure, cultural frameworks, and economic behavior. A specially-designed survey explored the savings behavior of southern Germans during the summer of 2013, augmented in 2015 with a data mining analysis of German social media platforms on the same topic. The results indicated a complex set of reasons for the savings behaviors of Germans, which also aligned broadly with the outcomes reported by Hofstede and provided a more comprehensive picture than Chen's theory.

Qualitative Case Study On Cell Phone Appropriation For Language Learning Purposes In A Dominican Context, Gisela Martiz
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research study investigated how a Dominican English language teacher and her students appropriated cell phone features for educational purposes inside and outside the classroom. The dissertation used a qualitative approach that focused on the teacher, and four students selected from a class of 23. Data collection took place for 8 weeks in an English language center located at a public university in the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2014. I collected data through interviews, conversations, classroom observations, and questionnaires. Data were analyzed to identify emerging themes that described how the teacher and students used their cell phones for …

Long-Term Study Of Crowdfunding Platform: Predicting Project Success And Fundraising Amount, Jinwook Chung
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Crowdfunding that is the combination word of crowdsourcing and funding makes people can start a business easily. Legislating JOBS act in US played a major role in removing restricted barriers of crowdfunding on public offerings of fence and private funds for small business. The growth speed of crowdfunding takes some beating. Through Kickstarter that is a popular crowdfunding platform and being considered the typical case of crowdfunding, 480 million dollars and more than half a billion dollars were invested in about 19 thousand and 22 projects for 2013 and 2014 respectively. But in spite of the rapid growth, the successful …

Learning From The Teaching Practices Of Successful Teachers Of Latina And Latino Students, Glori H. Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study, sponsored by the Department of Teacher Education and Leadership at Utah State University, was to determine the classroom practices and attitudes of the teachers that had been identified as successful with Latina and Latino students at an urban middle school. Criteria for successful teachers were not determined by the researcher, but by those school stakeholders who were asked to nominate such teachers: the administrators, faculty, and parents of Latina/o students.
The difference between the achievement of White students and students of color has long been a concern of educators. It is well established that critical …
The Being Of Art And The Art Of Being : Hermeneutic Ontology In Gadamer And Woolf., Adam Noland,
The Being Of Art And The Art Of Being : Hermeneutic Ontology In Gadamer And Woolf., Adam Noland,
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Overall, the point of this project is to plumb the affinities between Gadamer’s notion of hermeneutic ontology and Virginia Woolf’s novels—how these affinities illuminate and contribute to an improved understanding of Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics and Woolf’s novels. For their part, Gadamer and Woolf belong to a similar cultural and historical milieu, each, in one way or another, a participant in the intellectual and artistic movement known as Modernism. This movement arose in response to the encroaching impersonality of scientific objectivity: both Woolf and Gadamer recognized the pitfalls of this objectivity, as it necessarily discounts the interpretive opportunity and responsibility of …
Ideological Becoming : Intern Teachers' Experience Of Becoming Culturally Responsive Teachers., Sonya Burton
Ideological Becoming : Intern Teachers' Experience Of Becoming Culturally Responsive Teachers., Sonya Burton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explored the ways that teachers on an intern license who have been recruited by a Teacher Recruitment program experience ideological becoming into culturally responsive teachers in the Four Corners region of the United States. Bakhtin’s theories on ideological becoming and authoritative and internally persuasive discourses frame this study with emphasis on the experiences that caused intern teachers tension and helped them make culturally responsive teaching practices an internally persuasive discourse. I used narrative inquiry methodology to discern intern teachers’ stories and experiences. I interviewed 5 intern teachers teaching in elementary classrooms in the Four Corners region of the …
Mediation In Literacy : Language, Technology, And Modality., Hem Sharma Paudel
Mediation In Literacy : Language, Technology, And Modality., Hem Sharma Paudel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The issue of difference in writing, both in terms of language diversity and modalities, has received increasing attention in the context of new developments in technologies, increasing global migration, and intensified intersections of cultural and linguistic practices accompanying these changes. Theories of language and modality are trying separately to develop ways to best respond to the challenges and opportunities brought about by these changes. Responding to scholars’ recent calls for bridging the gap between studies of multilingualism and those of multimodality, this dissertation offers an approach that, instead of separating the study of modality and languages, questions such a tendency …
A Demographic Threat? Proposed Reclassification Of Arab Americans On The 2020 Census, Khaled A. Beydoun
A Demographic Threat? Proposed Reclassification Of Arab Americans On The 2020 Census, Khaled A. Beydoun
Michigan Law Review First Impressions
“Arab Americans are white?” This question—commonly posed as a demonstration of shock or surprise—highlights the dissonance between how “Arab” and “white” are discursively imagined and understood in the United States today. These four words also encapsulate the dilemma that currently riddles Arab Americans. The population finds itself interlocked between formal classification as white, and de facto recognition as nonwhite. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the government agency that oversees the definition, categorization, and construction of racial categories, currently counts people from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) as white. The United States Census Bureau (Census Bureau), the …

The Development Of Intercultural Competency In School Psychology Graduate Students, Susan C. Davies, Abigail A. Lewis, Amy E. Anderson, Elana R. Bernstein
Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications
School psychologists often have the opportunity to work with students and families from varied backgrounds and cultures. While this can be an exciting and enriching part of the job, it can also be daunting for some practitioners, particularly those who are inadequately prepared. A number of strategies have been implemented in school psychology training programs to improve students’ intercultural competency.
This exploratory study investigated the results of one university’s short-term study abroad program for school psychology graduate students. Pre- and post- intercultural development assessments were given to school psychology graduate students who completed a course abroad; results were compared to …
Prometheus & Atlas: An Inquiry Into The Spectral Essence Of Technoscience, Jason Reza Jorjani
Prometheus & Atlas: An Inquiry Into The Spectral Essence Of Technoscience, Jason Reza Jorjani
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Technological science has shattered the worldviews of all traditional cultures subjected to it, at times provoking reactionary religious responses that only underscore the traumatic force of this worldwide development. Yet, as I argue, this world-colonizing force is not neutral. The anticipatory projection and world-building characteristic of scientific theorization are grounded in a practical comportment, so that the essence of technology or Craft is ontologically prior to theoretical science. In other words, science is always already Technoscience. Moreover the theoretical concepts and methodologies involved in predictive calculation and in crafting frameworks that model and mold the world are derived from pre-conceptual …
