Singapore’s vibrant dispute resolution sector has been growing on the back of a significant rise in commercial transactions in Asia and a corresponding increase in the number and complexity of cross-border disputes. In particular, Singapore has achieved significant success in the field of international arbitration. Singapore has been recognised as the third most preferred seat of arbitration, after London and Geneva, and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (“SIAC”) is the fourth most preferred arbitral institution worldwide despite being a relatively young institution. In recent years, Singapore law firms have also ranked amongst the top international arbitration practices in Asia.In order …

The Singapore Legal System, Eugene K. B. Tan, Gary Kok Yew Chan
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The Singapore legal system is a rich tapestry of laws, institutions, values, history and culture. Like the Singapore-made quilt, each strand of the legal system is woven together to form a jurisprudential kaleidoscope bounded by a unique national identity.
The legal system will inevitably undergo tension as socio-economic and politico-legal changes unfold with increased globalisation and regionalisation. Thus, Singapore has to respond swiftly and deftly in creating new laws and institutions or adapting existing ones.
In this regard, Singapore is and has been ready and willing to learn from the legal developments taking place in foreign jurisdictions with similar aspirations. …

Abstract
The Rule of Law and Ethical Integrity: Does Haiti Need a Code of Legal Ethics?
When concerns about impunity and devastating poverty are facts of life, as they are in Haiti, lawyers face enormous obstacles in their efforts to uphold the rule of law and protect human rights. At the heart of many of these obstacles lie ethical challenges. For example, bribery of judicial officials is a crime and undermines the rule of law. But, what if a lawyer understands that pre-trial detention in the local prison generally involves grievous violations of inmates’ basic human rights, and bribery represents …

In 2014, an undercover investigator working for Mercy For Animals documented horrific animal cruelty at the Dry Creek Dairy in Hansen, Idaho. Video of the abuse was released nationally. The owners of the dairy instituted reforms and the abusers were prosecuted. But the law that was passed this time, within months of the video’s release, protects neither the animals nor the food supply, but the agriculture industry.

The Ohio Supreme Court's Traffic Court Rules: A Beginning Of Procedural Rule-Making, James G. France
The Ohio Supreme Court's Traffic Court Rules: A Beginning Of Procedural Rule-Making, James G. France
Akron Law Review
With a simple one-page announcement on November 14, 1967, the Supreme Court of Ohio assumed not only the power of control, but, in a sense, responsibility for, the operations of one of the most variegated collections of minor courts in the country.' The occasion was its adoption of uniform rules of practice in traffic matters for all courts inferior to the court of common pleas. In so doing it joined a limited group of some eight states, led by New Jersey, which dared to enter a potential quagmire dominated by local politicians, traffic safety zealots, civil libertarians and assorted publicity …

The Role Of Social Structure And Financial Incentives In Individual And Organizational Performance, Timothy Gubler
The Role Of Social Structure And Financial Incentives In Individual And Organizational Performance, Timothy Gubler
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the role of individuals in firm strategy and performance by exploring how social factors at the individual-level combine with financial incentives to influence individual behaviors and performance. By drawing on unique proprietary datasets from two service settings, I investigate 1) how social affiliations between real estate listing agents and clients influence value creation, appropriation, and the types of transactions agents engage in, and 2) how corporate awards, which primarily reward individuals based off non-pecuniary social factors, are influenced by individual heterogeneity. The results of this dissertation suggest that a more nuanced view of the impact of social …

A Queer Liberation Movement? A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Queer Liberation Organizations, Investigating Whether They Are Building A Separate Social Movement, Joseph Nicholas Defilippis
Dissertations and Theses
In the last forty years, U.S. national and statewide LGBT organizations, in pursuit of "equality" through a limited and focused agenda, have made remarkably swift progress moving that agenda forward. However, their agenda has been frequently criticized as prioritizing the interests of White, middle-class gay men and lesbians and ignoring the needs of other LGBT people. In their shadows have emerged numerous grassroots organizations led by queer people of color, transgender people, and low-income LGBT people. These "queer liberation" groups have often been viewed as the left wing of the GRM, but have not been extensively studied. My research investigated …

Ohio Residential Landlord Tenant Act, Robert J. Croyle
Ohio Residential Landlord Tenant Act, Robert J. Croyle
Akron Law Review
The new Ohio Landlord-Tenant Act is the legislature's attempt at correcting the imbalance between landlord and tenant. This new law is Ohio's unique adaptation of the Uniform Residential Landlord and Tenant Act. The thrust of the new act is to abrogate the Ohio common law of caveat emptor and independent covenants and reinterpret residential leases in light of modem contract law.
The purpose of this article is to acquaint the reader with the newly defined rights, duties and remedies of the landlord and the tenant. Analysis will be placed on: (1) Ohio case law prior to the act; (2) similar …
