Imagining The Kingdom: The Intersection Of Religion And Violence, Donald Roth

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"All religions must grapple honestly with issues of violence, both in terms of the limits and means of righteous zeal and in terms of the ultimate goals of the movement. One potentially instructive way for the monotheistic religions to do this may be to ask the question “How do we imagine the Kingdom of God?”

Posting about the intersection of religion and violence from In All Things - an online hub committed to the claim that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ has implications for the entire world.

Volume 7: Shaping Global Islamic Discourses : The Role Of Al-Azhar, Al-Medina And Al-Mustafa, Masooda Bano, Keiko Sakurai

Exploring Muslim Contexts

Claims abound that Saudi oil money is fueling Salafi Islam in cultural and geographical terrains as disparate as the remote hamlets of the Swat valley in Pakistan and sprawling megacities such as Jakarta. In a similar manner, it is often regarded as a fact that Iran and the Sunni Arab states are fighting proxy wars in foreign lands.

This empirically grounded study challenges the assumptions prevalent within academic as well as policy circles about the hegemonic power of such Islamic discourses and movements to penetrate all Muslim communities and societies.

Through case studies of academic institutions, the volume illustrates how …

Towards Enhancing The Compilation Of Al-Hadith Text In Malay, A. Bimba, M.A. Ismail, N. Idris, S. Jaafar, R. Mahmud

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The statement and conducts of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), was memorized, written down and later passed by his companions from one generation to another. Later, as the authenticity of the text became threatened, Islamic scholars from Muslim nations collected thousands of these narratives and distinguished the true wisdom from fabricated ones. However, statements are still attributed to the Prophet by individuals with no knowledge of al-Hadith. Currently, with the existence of the internet and the popularity of social media, the threat to the access and existence of fake al-Hadith is more likely than ever. Our first step to handling this challenge …

SURGE

Today, the Monday after the attack, all of the flags were at half mast. Everything continued as normal, as if nothing had happened. Yet there was an intensity in the air. I didn’t notice the increased police, but it was easy to feel the increased security. [excerpt]

When asked what the hijab means, Egyptian women focus on religious reasons and Yemeni women emphasize a cultural (or modesty) understanding. When probed further about their understanding of hijab, Egyptian women split between religious and gendered explanations. Significant numbers of women in our Egyptian sample report …

Methodologically, this paper employs an integrative perspective to explain the process of diffusion in some countries but not in others, by exploring both external and internal factors that led to policy innovation. Overall, full-face Muslim veil bans in Western Europe have been intended to accelerate cultural integration of minorities …

Operating Islamic Jurisprudence In Non-Muslim Jurisdictions: Traditional Islamic Precepts And Contemporary Controversies In The United States, Mustafa R. K. Baig

Chicago-Kent Law Review

With the recent public furor in the United States regarding “Shari‘a,” studies into the content of Islamic jurisprudence concerning Muslims living under non-Muslim jurisdiction are more pertinent than ever in the U.S. context. As “anti-Shari‘a” rhetoric has increased in fervency, informed input into the debates could go some way in correcting the peddled misconceptions. The paper begins by assessing how Muslim scholars viewed a Muslim’s travel to and residence in non-Muslim lands, and the obligation to abide by the laws of the land. It will focus on the jihad (siyar) section in Islamic jurisprudence and the section on …
