Secularism, Sharia, And The Turkish Financial Markets, J. Robert Brown Jr. Jan 2015

Secularism, Sharia, And The Turkish Financial Markets, J. Robert Brown Jr.

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The financial markets in Turkey provide a laboratory to help resolve these competing views. Islamic law or Sharia contains a number of proscriptions that directly affect financial practices. The payment and receipt of interest is prohibited; so are most kinds of commercial insurance. These interpretations provided the impetus in the Islamic world for the creation of a class of banks that sought to offer Sharia compliant services.

The first Islamic Banks in Turkey began operations in the 1980s. Their entry was initially tepid, in no small part because of secularist principles. Islamic financial institutions could not overtly advertise their religious …

New Middle East Cold War: Saudi Arabia And Iran's Rivalry, Tali Rachel Grumet Jan 2015

New Middle East Cold War: Saudi Arabia And Iran's Rivalry, Tali Rachel Grumet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The competing powers of Saudi Arabia and Iran continue to redress and reverse the strategic imbalance and direction of the Middle East’s regional politics. The 1979 Iranian Revolution catapulted these two states into an embittered rivalry. The fall of Saddam Hussein following the 2003 U.S. led invasion, the establishment of a Shi’ite Iraq and the 2011 Arab Uprisings have further inflamed tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Iran and Saudi Arabia have not confronted each other militarily, but rather have divided the region into two armed camps on the basis of political and religious ideology in seeking regional allies and …

An Exhortation To Study God’S Two “Books”, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2015

An Exhortation To Study God’S Two “Books”, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

From the birth of modern science at the end of the sixteenth century, Galileo famously believed that God had written two books — the scriptures and the Book of Nature. The scriptures, he contended, should be interpreted by scholars and theologians, whereas the Book of Nature was the province of scientists:

Questioning: The Divine Plan, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2015

Questioning: The Divine Plan, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Some critics of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, chiefly of the secular variety, claim that Latter-day Saints are mind-controlled robots who are forbidden to think for themselves. I collected an example of this claim nearly twenty years ago that will serve to represent many other such expressions before and since.

Seeing Ourselves Through The Eyes Of A Friendly And Thoughtful Evangelical, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2015

Seeing Ourselves Through The Eyes Of A Friendly And Thoughtful Evangelical, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Some Latter-day Saints will recall Richard Mouw from the introductory remarks that he offered in November 2004 when the Evangelical Protestant apologist Ravi Zacharias was the featured speaker at a special interfaith meeting in the Tabernacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. In the course of his remarks, Professor Mouw apologized to Latter-day Saints for the way in which Evangelicals have often treated the Mormon faith. Carrie Moore, of the Deseret News, reported about Zacharias’s speech on 15 November 2004:

Dna Aptamers Selected Against Wild-Type Helix 69 Ribosomal Rna And Their Implications In Combating Antibiotic Resistance, Sakina Miriam Hill Jan 2015

Dna Aptamers Selected Against Wild-Type Helix 69 Ribosomal Rna And Their Implications In Combating Antibiotic Resistance, Sakina Miriam Hill

Wayne State University Dissertations

Outbreaks of advanced antibiotic-resistant strains of microbes have hastened the need to identify new viable molecular targets for the development of novel anti-infectives. For this purpose, helix 69 (H69, or m3a 19-nucleotide (nt) hairpin motif that is highly conserved throughout phylogeny and rich in modified nucleotides, including pseudouridine () and 3-methylpseudouridine (m3) was chosen as a potential target. Helix 69, which is located in domain IV of Escherichia coli 23S ribosomal RNA (rRNA), undergoes conformational changes when in close proximity to the decoding region of 16S rRNA and transfer RNAs (tRNAs) in the peptidyl-transferase center (PTC). Functionally, the exact biological …

Green Energy Towards Sustainability From The Islamic Perspective, Nur Hidayah Abdul Jabar, Zul Ilham, Shaikh Mohd Saifuddeen, Noor Naemah Abdul Rahman

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Sustainable development is a concept mooted to ensure that the needs of the present are met without compromising the needs of the future. Islam has outlined a number of concepts for ensuring that the environment is managed in a responsible and sustainable manner. These concepts are wisdom (hikmah), justice (‘adl), public interest (maslahah) and innovation (ijtihad). The framework of higher purposes of Islamic Divine law or maqasid al-shariah also provides guidance by highlighting five objectives (viz. faith, life, intellect, progeny and property) that need to be protected in carrying out development. However, the challenge lies in putting these concepts and …
