A School Growing Roots: The Bank Street Developmental-Interaction Approach At Community Roots Charter School, Ira Lit, Sam Intrator Jan 2015

A School Growing Roots: The Bank Street Developmental-Interaction Approach At Community Roots Charter School, Ira Lit, Sam Intrator

Books

This case study examines the efforts of a recently established public charter school in a diverse urban neighborhood in Brooklyn to create a school guided by the foundational principles of the Bank Street approach. The efforts to infuse the practice and approach of the school with a progressive ethos is set against the prevailing trend to create schools that deploy highly systematic and didactic pedagogies. The case study begins by describing the rich learning that transpired during a study of the Fort Greene neighborhood undertaken by Community Roots first graders. The study explores the interactions between people in the community …

Communists And The Classroom: Radicals In U.S. Education, 1930-1960, Jonathan Hunt Jan 2015

Communists And The Classroom: Radicals In U.S. Education, 1930-1960, Jonathan Hunt

Rhetoric and Language Faculty Publications and Research

Concern about Communists in education was a central preoccupation in the U.S. through the middle decades of the twentieth century. Focusing on post-secondary and adult education and on fields related to composition and rhetoric, this essay offers an overview of the surprisingly diverse contexts in which Communist educators worked. Some who taught in Communist- sponsored "separatist" institutions pioneered the kinds of radical pedagogical theories now most often attributed to Paulo Freire. Communist educators who taught in "mainstream" institutions, however, less often saw their pedagogy as a mode of political action; their activism was deployed mainly in civic life rather than …

Korean Church: God's Mission Global Christianity, Wonsuk Ma, Kyo Seong Ahn Jan 2015

Korean Church: God's Mission Global Christianity, Wonsuk Ma, Kyo Seong Ahn

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

Once considered as a Cinderella in church growth and mission in the post-Edinburgh Conference era, the Korean church is given its due in this book. As a guide to Korean Christianity, it contains more than thirty chapters, written by historians, missiologists, sociologists, mission practitioners, pastors, and church leaders. They come from a wide range of church traditions, and also from within and without South Korea. This volume assesses the legacy and place of Korean Christianity and its mission, provides insightful and self-critical accounts in topics ranging from theories, policies, practices, and prospects, and offers a useful overview of how the …

Law's Acceleration Of Finance: Redefining The Problem Of High-Frequency Trading, Frank A. Pasquale Jan 2015

Law's Acceleration Of Finance: Redefining The Problem Of High-Frequency Trading, Frank A. Pasquale

Faculty Scholarship

High-frequency traders automate stock trading, placing thousands of orders over fractions of a second. Their algorithmic strategies are all too often mere rule manipulation or methods of using brute speed to gain advantages over rivals. Normative evaluation of finance’s algorithms must take into account the sector’s social function: to spur efficient, fair, and sustainable investment practices. The complex modeling deployed in high-frequency trading does not reliably contribute to these goals. Therefore, rather than straining to accommodate high-frequency trading strategies, regulators should eliminate many of them.

Making Waves: Bacon, Manley, And The Shifting Rhetorics Of Opulent At(A)Lantis, Alex Cahill Nielsen Jan 2015

Making Waves: Bacon, Manley, And The Shifting Rhetorics Of Opulent At(A)Lantis, Alex Cahill Nielsen

ETD Archive

In the modern critical environment, there has been a renewed interest in the role that proto-feminist and feminist satires have played in the development of cultural commentary and the modern novel. Lesser-studied works have seen several new approaches applied by critics such as Rachel Carnell, Rebecca Bullard, and Ruth Herman, who have focused on the role of the genre of "secret history" in the popular growth of the novel as a form for political dissent. Secret history, which can offer revelatory glimpses into the contemporary scandals and governance of the female authors of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, is a …

The Dawn Of Sowt: Oss Weathermen In The Balkans, 1944, Bryan David Carnes Jan 2015

The Dawn Of Sowt: Oss Weathermen In The Balkans, 1944, Bryan David Carnes

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis will examine the rise of Special Operations Weathermen during World War II, from the founding of the Weather Bureau to the formation of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). OSS-weathermen and their contributions played a significant role to the overall Allied victory in all theaters of operation. Concentrating on the first documented use of clandestine weathermen in Yugoslavia, I contend that Special Operations Weather was not only crucial to the war effort, but as a result, revolutionized behind-the-line weather reporting in modern U.S. military. Since meteorological data transcends alliances and nationalities; those who can accurately forecast and observe …

How Wales Was Made So Happy: Exploring Nation And Nonsense In Shakespeare's Treatment Of The Welsh, Morgan Moore Jan 2015

How Wales Was Made So Happy: Exploring Nation And Nonsense In Shakespeare's Treatment Of The Welsh, Morgan Moore

Honors Thesis Collection

With famous lines like “On, on, you noblest English!,” and “This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England,” Shakespeare’s plays—especially the histories— are famous for their role in creating and glorifying English national identity. But equally important to an understanding of Shakespeare’s canon are minority British identities, and of these the most prevalent and most overlooked are the Welsh. This thesis focuses on Shakespeare’s Welsh characters, their roles and presentations, and chooses to examine the often paradoxical portrayals of such Welsh characters. In focusing on Sir Hugh Evans from The Merry Wives of Windsor, Fluellen from Henry V, Owen …

How Archives Shape Our Collective Memory: A Re-Examination Of The Library Of Congress’ American Memory Collection Of The 1936-1938 Federal Writers Project’S Collection Of Former Slave Narratives And Concomitant Questions Of African American Cultural Knowledge Production, Renee Neely Jan 2015

How Archives Shape Our Collective Memory: A Re-Examination Of The Library Of Congress’ American Memory Collection Of The 1936-1938 Federal Writers Project’S Collection Of Former Slave Narratives And Concomitant Questions Of African American Cultural Knowledge Production, Renee Neely

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

The massive compilation of oral histories of formerly enslaved African Americans by the Federal Writers Project, was an ambitious project. This case study raises questions surrounding the Collection’s provenance within its socio-political framework and its enduring legacy.

Additionally, this examination pursues areas of cultural knowledge production cited within the narratives, that merit further study. A discussion surrounding the conscious or unconscious, outcome of archival practice, and its ability to shape our historical record is the goal of this investigation.

“We Believe That God Speaks Danish.” Assimilation Vs Identity In Sanpete County, Utah, Claus Elholm Andersen, Elizabeth Peterson

The Bridge

Most accounts hold that Danes in America assimilated rapidly and effectively into mainstream culture…but was that always the case? This article focuses on a small community in Utah that was home to a large proportion of Danes and other Scandinavians. A close examination of this community reveals that the assimilation process was not always as straightforward a process as we oft en hear.
