Chow Yiu Sin Mar 2015

Chow Yiu Sin

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Zhaopeng Wang Mar 2015

Zhaopeng Wang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Xi Jin Mar 2015

Xi Jin

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Chunhong Wang Mar 2015

Chunhong Wang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Yinchi Chen, Te Chen Mar 2015

Yinchi Chen, Te Chen

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Shaokang Zhang Mar 2015

Shaokang Zhang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Do The Right Thing: Understanding The Interest-Convergence Thesis, Stephen Matthew Feldman

Faculty Articles

Professor Derrick Bell was one of the most influential constitutional scholars of the last fifty years His insights spurred civil rights scholars as well as thinkers in other fields One of his most important legacies is the interestconvergence thesis which asserts that historically African Americans gained social justice primarily when their interests converged with the interests of the white majority In a recently published article Rethinking the InterestConvergence Thesis Professor Justin Driver calls this legacy into question This Essay defends the interestconvergence thesis from Driver's attack It argues that the analytical flaws he identifies only exist by dint of his …

Sumpong Spirit Beliefs, Murder, And Religious Change Among Eighteenth-Century Aeta And Ilongot In Eastern Central Luzon, Mark; Ateneo Dizon Feb 2015

Sumpong Spirit Beliefs, Murder, And Religious Change Among Eighteenth-Century Aeta And Ilongot In Eastern Central Luzon, Mark; Ateneo Dizon

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

In common usage and in psychology sumpong is considered a deviant and irrational behavior. Thisarticle makes sense of sumpong by putting it in the historical context of animism, specifically that of the eighteenth-century Aeta and Ilongot of eastern Central Luzon. As a form of perception, feeling, and action, sumpong was temporally flat since past, present, and future did not succeed one another in linear fashion. Based on historical dictionaries and usage, thisarticle explores the role of sumpong as an affective and culturally intelligible way of understanding and acting in the animist world as seen in cases of murder and religious …

Number 2 - The Role Of Western Democratic System Of Governance In Exacerbating Ethnic Conflicts In Africa: The Case Of Ghana's Democratic Dispensation, 1992-2012, David Kwasi Bansah

Peace and Conflict Management Working Papers Series

This paper interrogates the influence of Western forms of democracy on ethnic conflicts in Africa through a case study of Ghana’s adoption of multiparty democracy between 1992 and 2012. It discusses the transition of African traditional systems of government before, during, and after colonization. The paper also shows how democracy, by definition and in terms of governance, cannot solely be a Western idea since many African societies had democratic elements in their systems of government before the arrival of the Europeans. Relying on qualitative secondary data, and the analysis of fierce and acrimonious competition that have characterized multiparty democratic elections …

Learning To Be Quaker: Spiritual Formation And Religious Education Among Early Friends, Martha Paxson Grundy Feb 2015

Learning To Be Quaker: Spiritual Formation And Religious Education Among Early Friends, Martha Paxson Grundy

Quaker Studies

The theology and lifestyle that grew from Friends' transforming experience of'primitive Christianity revived' differed from the dominant culture, exacting a high cost. Relying on early Friends' writing, this article examines how this new paradigm was transmitted. Friends summarized the basis of their faith with the phrase 'Christ is come to teach his people himself' (Benson 1968: 36; 1976: 3; Cooper 1990: 2; Freiday 1984: 4; Grundy 2002b: 11-13, 15, 17). In the 1650s and 1660s most people who became Friends were first worked on internally by the Holy Spirit. When they heard a Quaker preach, the words reached to the …

Guadalupe San Miguel’s Chicana/o Struggles for Education: Activism in the Community is the seventh book in the University of Houston Series in Mexican American Studies. The author provides a historical overview of the multiple strategies and methods that Mexican American activists, organizations, and like-minded individuals employed in order to obtain not only quality education but also culturally relevant and religious education for Mexican-origin students from the 1960s to 2010. San Miguel focuses on this period in order to show how Mexican American education evolved in the post–Civil Rights era and how different groups pushed for educational reforms to achieve their …

On The Fringe Of Italian Fascism: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Vinicio Paladini And The Soviet Avant-Garde, Christina Brungardt Feb 2015

On The Fringe Of Italian Fascism: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Vinicio Paladini And The Soviet Avant-Garde, Christina Brungardt

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Vinicio Paladini's career as an artist, architect, and cultural critic illuminates the paradoxes of the Italian avant-garde between the World Wars. He emerged as an early proponent of communist-Futurism in 1922 and attempted to integrate futurist techniques with the Marxist theories of Antonio Gramsci. In addition, Paladini provided a direct point of contact between the Russian and Italian avant-garde, traveling to Moscow and reporting to the Italian public on Soviet artists' developments in film, photomontage, and architecture. Yet he struggled to merge his leftist ideology with his artistic practice as Fascism spread throughout Italy. Although he has been largely neglected …

Changing Identities In A Changing Land: The Romanization Of The British Landscape, Thomas Ryan Feb 2015

Changing Identities In A Changing Land: The Romanization Of The British Landscape, Thomas Ryan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis will examine the changes in the landscape of Britain resulting from the Roman invasion in 43 CE and their effect on the identities of the native Britons. Romanization, as the process is commonly called, and evidence of these altered identities as seen in material culture have been well studied. However, the manifestations of this process in the landscape have been less well examined. Applying current theories in landscape archaeology, the Selsey peninsula oppidum of the Atrebates and two hillforts of the Durotriges, sites that have been well excavated and examined, will be the focus of this thesis. The …

Civilizing Settlers: Catholic Missionaries And The Colonial State In French Algeria, 1830-1914, Kyle Francis Feb 2015

Civilizing Settlers: Catholic Missionaries And The Colonial State In French Algeria, 1830-1914, Kyle Francis

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation argues that between 1830 and 1914, with increasing intensity over time, French Catholic missionaries sowed divisions among the European population of French Algeria. The French government initially welcomed missionaries to cater to religiously devout Spanish, Italian, and Maltese settlers in Algeria and to foster their loyalty to the colonial state. Missionaries, however, incited the professional jealousy and personal animosity of the territory's generally less devout French population, who saw Catholicism and missionaries as little different from Islam and the "fanatical" Muslim population. Throughout this period, missionaries thus occupied a liminal space in the racialized hierarchy of colonial rule. …

Between Egyptian Nationalism And Religion: Imagining The Nation From Below, Yara Moussa Sultan Feb 2015

Between Egyptian Nationalism And Religion: Imagining The Nation From Below, Yara Moussa Sultan

Theses and Dissertations

The January 25 revolution and the dramatic unfolding of events thereafter, have been a time of immense social, political and economic transformation in Egypt. Recent changes in political leadership, from the fall of Mubarak’s regime, to the Muslim Brotherhood’s (MB) ascent to power, and finally, to the landslide victory of the Armed Forces through Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s assuming of the presidency, have brought to light some of the dynamics of mass politics in Egypt. These transformations made visible a wide array of expressions of collective and national belonging as the Egyptian people came into contact with ideologically differentiated ruling regimes. …

Succession Planning Activities At A Rural Public Health Department, Sandra L. Cole, Clifford P. Harbour Jan 2015

Succession Planning Activities At A Rural Public Health Department, Sandra L. Cole, Clifford P. Harbour

The Qualitative Report

This qualitative case study utilized interviews and evaluation of publicallyavailable documents to investigate the process of succession planning in a moderately-sized public health office located in a metropolitan community in a frontier-rural state. Following analysis of the data, the results were compared to literature findings. Four public health directors, the County Health Officer and the Board of Health chairperson participated in the private, face-to-face interviews. These individuals were asked to participate because they have the ability to direct staff leadership development activities. A formal succession planning program did not exist at this agency; however, on an informal basis, leadership development …

Underestimating Women In The Early Modern Atlantic World, Lindsey Bauman Jan 2015

Underestimating Women In The Early Modern Atlantic World, Lindsey Bauman

International ResearchScape Journal

This essay examines the limiting gender roles of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as depicted through the detailed account of Catalina de Erauso, a Spanish woman who ran away from a convent. Disguising herself as a man, Catalina eventually journeyed to Chile, joined the militia, and took part in fighting against the native peoples of the region. Noted as being an exemplary warrior in the midst of battle, she was not detected as a woman until she exposed herself. By taking historical context into account, this essay argues that patriarchal society’s view of women is what enabled Catalina to impersonate …

Twelve Years A Terror: U.S. Impact In The 12-Year Civil War In El Salvador, Cara E. Mckinney

International ResearchScape Journal

This essay explores the impacts of the United States government and military in the civil war in El Salvador in a comprehensive historical study. Through the presence of monetary aid, a disregard for the human rights of people in El Salvador, and the presence of U.S. trained soldiers at the then School of Americas and the current Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, the U.S. prolonged and augmented the negative effects of the Salvadoran Civil War.

Evapotranspiration From Natural Vegetation In The Central Valley Of California: Monthly Grass Reference-Based Vegetation Coefficients And The Dual Crop Coefficient Approach, Daniel J. Howes, Phyllis Fox, Paul H. Hutton Jan 2015

Evapotranspiration From Natural Vegetation In The Central Valley Of California: Monthly Grass Reference-Based Vegetation Coefficients And The Dual Crop Coefficient Approach, Daniel J. Howes, Phyllis Fox, Paul H. Hutton

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Restoration activities in the Central Valley of California and elsewhere require accurate evapotranspiration information, which can then be used for a wide variety of surface and subsurface hydrologic evaluations. However, directly measuring evapotranspiration can be difficult or impossible depending on the evaluation’s time frame. Transferability of measured evapotranspiration in time and space is also necessary but typically requires a weather-based reference. For nonagricultural vegetation, there is at present time no standard reference, which makes the evaluation of a variety of vegetation types from different sources difficult and time-consuming. This paper examines several methods used to estimate evapotranspiration from native vegetation, …

Felony Disenfranchisement: A Literature Review, Carter A. Wilson Dr. Jan 2015

Felony Disenfranchisement: A Literature Review, Carter A. Wilson Dr.

Conference Presentations

This paper examines and critiques legal arguments supporting and opposing felon disenfranchisement laws. It reexamines Richardson v Ramerez, the Supreme Court decision upholding the constitutionality of state laws that deny voting rights to voting aged cities with felony convictions. It summarizes the literature on case law, legal theory, democratic theory and comparative governments related to voting rights and felon disenfranchisement. It presents a typology of different levels of felon disenfranchisement practice. It concludes that the arguments supporting the more severe practices of felon disenfranchisement tend to focus on the 14th amendment while ignoring the 15th amendment; tend to trivialize the …
