Public Housing Relocation Of Older Adults In Atlanta: Challenging The Aging In Place Concept, Laquanda R. Jackson Oct 2015

Public Housing Relocation Of Older Adults In Atlanta: Challenging The Aging In Place Concept, Laquanda R. Jackson

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

In 2007 AHA demolished two senior high-rise buildings causing the forcible removal of older African American residents who may have wanted to age in place due to community attachment. Aging in place and community attachment are concepts that describe the strong social-psychological attraction to a specific location among older long-term residents (McAuley 1998). This thesis examines if community attachment differ for residents who were forced to relocate and those who were able to age in place. Using longitudinal data from the GSU Urban Health Initiative, I looked at relocated and non-relocating senior public housing residents’ community attachment as it relates …

Comparison of Three Levels of Divorce in Whitfield County, State of Georgia, and the United States in Two Decades, 1990-2009

Abstract:

In this paper, there is an investigation of the North West Georgia divorce ratios in 1990-2010 and how they are related to the same ratios in the State of Georgia and the United States as a whole. The data showed that there was a decline in divorce ratios on the three levels. However, the North West Georgia divorce ratios were still much higher than the State and the national ratios. I would like to thank the three anonymous reviewers …

Are Unions A Constitutional Anomaly?, Cynthia Estlund Oct 2015

Are Unions A Constitutional Anomaly?, Cynthia Estlund

Michigan Law Review

This term in Friedrichs v. California Teachers Ass’n, the Supreme Court will consider whether ordinary public employees may constitutionally be required to pay an “agency fee,” as a condition of employment, to the union that represents them in collective bargaining. The Court established the terms of engagement in the 2014 decision Harris v. Quinn, which struck down an agency fee on narrower grounds while describing the current doctrine approving agency fees, blessed many times by the Court itself, as an “anomaly.” This Article asks whether labor unions are themselves anomalies in our legal system, particularly in their constitutional entitlements. Its …

Holding On To Clarity: Reconciling The Federal Kidnapping Statute With The Trafficking Victims Protection Act, Benjamin Reese Oct 2015

Holding On To Clarity: Reconciling The Federal Kidnapping Statute With The Trafficking Victims Protection Act, Benjamin Reese

Michigan Law Review

In recent decades, the international community has come to recognize human trafficking as a problem of epidemic proportions. Congress responded to this global crisis in 2000 by passing the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) and has since supplemented that comprehensive enactment. But, in light of the widespread use of psychological rather than physical coercion in trafficking cases, a long-standing split among federal courts regarding the scope of the federal kidnapping statute raises significant concerns about the United States’ efforts to combat traffickers. In particular, the broad interpretation adopted by several circuits threatens effective enforcement of statutes designed to prosecute traffickers, …

Naturally Occurring Deletion Mutants Of The Pig-Specific, Intestinal Crypt Epithelial Cell Protein Clca4b Without Apparent Phenotype., Stephanie Plog, Nikolai Klymiuk, Stefanie Binder, Matthew J. Van Hook, Wallace B. Thoreson, Achim D. Gruber, Lars Mundhenk

Journal Articles: Ophthalmology

The human CLCA4 (chloride channel regulator, calcium-activated) modulates the intestinal phenotype of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients via an as yet unknown pathway. With the generation of new porcine CF models, species-specific differences between human modifiers of CF and their porcine orthologs are considered critical for the translation of experimental data. Specifically, the porcine ortholog to the human CF modulator gene CLCA4 has recently been shown to be duplicated into two separate genes, CLCA4a and CLCA4b. Here, we characterize the duplication product, CLCA4b, in terms of its genomic structure, tissue and cellular expression patterns as well as its in vitro electrophysiological …

The Role Of Self-Awareness In Developing Global Competence: A Qualitative Multi-Case Study, Stacy D. Shipman Oct 2015

The Role Of Self-Awareness In Developing Global Competence: A Qualitative Multi-Case Study, Stacy D. Shipman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

The current era of globalization and unprecedented global migration is creating the need for schools to educate students for global competence (GC). Multiple researchers (Boix Mansilla & Jackson, 2011; Hunter, 2004; Hunter et al., 2006; Morales & Ogden, 2013) suggest that self-awareness is the core dimension of GC, but about which very little is known. This paper considers the demonstrations of self-awareness in the development of GC. Using Kim's (2008) Intercultural Personhood Theory and the specific components of personal and social communication processes, self-awareness was investigated in East African immigrants. Findings suggest that the construct of self-awareness dimensionalizes differently for …

The Paradox Of The Serrated Sickle Erythrocyte: The Importance Of The Red Blood Cell Membrane Topography., Samir K. Ballas, Philippe Connes

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

Red blood cell rheology and adhesiveness play a key role in the occurrence of vaso-occlusive like events in sickle cell anemia. The present paper reviews counter-intuitive findings supporting that rigid and serrated sickle red blood cells do not initiate vaso-occlusion. Instead, the less rigid red blood cells could initiate vaso-occlusion because of their increased adhesiveness to the vascular wall. We suspect that stiffness of sickle erythrocytes and the topography of RBC membrane are factors affecting adhesion to the endothelium.

Delegating Tax, James R. Hines Jr., Kyle D. Logue Oct 2015

Delegating Tax, James R. Hines Jr., Kyle D. Logue

Michigan Law Review

Congress delegates extensive and growing lawmaking authority to federal administrative agencies in areas other than taxation, but tightly limits the scope of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Treasury regulatory discretion in the tax area, specifically not permitting these agencies to select or adjust tax rates. This Article questions why tax policy does and should differ from other policy areas in this respect, noting some of the potential policy benefits of delegation. Greater delegation of tax lawmaking authority would allow administrative agencies to apply their expertise to fiscal policy and afford timely adjustment to changing economic circumstances. Furthermore, delegation of the …

Somaesthetics is an approach advanced by Richard Shusterman (2000, 2006, 2008) in which bodily experience plays the central role in aesthetic appreciation, production, and analysis. Somaesthetics draws from a variety of epistemological approaches, including the philosophies of twentieth-century thinkers such as as Merleau-Ponty (1962), de Beauvoir (1997), Foucault (1986), and Wittgenstein; pragmatist philosophies of William James and John Dewey; and theoretical and practice-based contributions of somatic practitioners such as Moshe Feldenkrais and Frederick Alexander. It is an ameliorative approach that encourages heightened awareness of the body leading to an improved “use of the self” (Shusterman, 2008, p. 8). As a …

Pain is a key unmet need and a major aspect of non‐motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). No specific validated scales exist to identify and grade the various types of pain in PD. We report an international, cross‐sectional, open, multicenter, one‐point‐in‐time evaluation with retest study of the first PD‐specific pain scale, the King's PD Pain Scale. Its seven domains include 14 items, each item scored by severity (0‐3) multiplied by frequency (0‐4), resulting in a subscore of 0 to 12, with a total possible score range from 0 to 168. One hundred seventy‐eight PD patients with otherwise unexplained pain (age …
