Prediction Of The Optimum Binder Content Of Open-Graded Friction Course Mixtures Using Digital Image Processing, Yolibeth Mejias De Pernia Oct 2015

Prediction Of The Optimum Binder Content Of Open-Graded Friction Course Mixtures Using Digital Image Processing, Yolibeth Mejias De Pernia

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has been using Open Graded Friction Course (OGFC) mixture to improve skid resistance of asphalt pavements under wet weather. The OGFC mixture design strongly depends on the Optimum Binder Content (OBC) which represents if the mixture has sufficient bonding between the aggregate and asphalt binder. At present, the FDOT designs OGFC mixtures using a pie plate visual draindown method (FM 5-588). In this method, the OBC is determined based on visual inspection of the asphalt binder draindown (ABD) configuration of three OGFC samples placed on pie plates with pre-determined trial asphalt binder contents (AC). The …

High-Solids Anaerobic Digestion Of The Organic Fraction Of Municipal Solid Waste State Of The Art, Outlook In Florida, And Enhancing Methane Yields From Lignocellulosic Wastes, Gregory Richard Hinds Oct 2015

High-Solids Anaerobic Digestion Of The Organic Fraction Of Municipal Solid Waste State Of The Art, Outlook In Florida, And Enhancing Methane Yields From Lignocellulosic Wastes, Gregory Richard Hinds

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biotechnology that employs natural microbial metabolism under oxygen-free conditions to stabilize organic waste. AD has been shown to be the most environmentally sustainable technology for treating the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), as it allows for the recovery of energy and nutrients from the waste. AD of OFMSW also saves landfill space and reduces leachate generation and fugitive methane emissions from landfills. High-solids AD (HS-AD) technologies (those designed to process feedstocks with >15% total solids content) have been shown to yield additional benefits when compared with liquid AD (L-AD) for treating OFMSW, including …

From Conceptual Pluralism To Practical Agreement On Policy: Global Responsibility For Global Health, Audrey Chapman Oct 2015

From Conceptual Pluralism To Practical Agreement On Policy: Global Responsibility For Global Health, Audrey Chapman

UCHC Articles - Research

Background

As the human cost of the global economic crisis becomes apparent the ongoing discussions surrounding the post-2015 global development framework continue at a frenzied pace. Given the scale and scope of increased globalization moving forward in a post-Millennium Development Goals era, to protect and realize health equity for all people, has never been more challenging or more important. The unprecedented nature of global interdependence underscores the importance of proposing policy solutions that advance realizing global responsibility for global health.

Discussion

This article argues for advancing global responsibility for global health through the creation of a Global Fund for Health. …

Removing Inter-Subject Technical Variability In Magnetic Resonance Imaging Studies, Jean-Philippe Fortin, Elizabeth M. Sweeney, John Muschelli, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Russell T. Shinohara, Alzheimer’S Disease Neuroimaging Initiative

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) intensities are acquired in arbitrary units, making scans non-comparable across sites and between subjects. Intensity normalization is a first step for the improvement of comparability of the images across subjects. However, we show that unwanted inter-scan variability associated with imaging site, scanner effect and other technical artifacts is still present after standard intensity normalization in large multi-site neuroimaging studies. We propose RAVEL (Removal of Artificial Voxel Effect by Linear regression), a tool to remove residual technical variability after intensity normalization. As proposed by SVA and RUV [Leek and Storey, 2007, …

Second Year Results From Razor C.O.A.C.H., Sarah Moore, Josh Raney, Gary W. Ritter, Kristin K. Higgins

Arkansas Education Reports

In this paper, we present the results of a random assignment evaluation on the Razor C.O.A.C.H. (Creating Opportunities for Arkansan’s Career Hopes) program. As the program started in the 2012-13 school year, this evaluation analyzes the impact of the program in its second year of operation and includes two cohorts of students. The focus of the comprehensive evaluation is the impacts of the program on students’ academic outcomes, short-term noncognitive outcomes, short-term college and career readiness outcomes, and post-secondary outcomes.

The Anchor, Volume 129.08: October 28, 2015, Hope College

The Anchor: 2015

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

2015 Program, Office Of Academic Affairs Oct 2015

2015 Program, Office Of Academic Affairs

Programs

A university is more than an amalgamation of several colleges. It also is an organization which celebrates the full richness of faculty contributions including those vital and exciting contributions in research, scholarship and creative activity within their disciplines. These contributions come in many forms: journal articles, book chapters, monographs, art works, music compositions, performances of many varieties and a host of others. Funded research contributions are similarly varied. Through such activities, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich their intellectual lives as well as those of their students.

Once again, I …

E-Learning Modules

In an article published in 1993 by Shulman about higher education it was stated that, "Teaching takes practice. It takes feedback. It takes instruction." More and more we are becoming aware of that. There has been increasing recognition of the need to prepare medical students for their future teaching roles as intern/residents and physicians. There have been numerous publications addressing peer teaching in undergraduate education, but sparse literature addressing how medical students co-teach physical diagnosis to pre-clinical students in lieu of faculty. Traditionally in North America, full-time faculty members have assumed the major responsibility for teaching first- and second-year medical …

Principal Leadership Practices In High Poverty K-5 Model Schools In Oregon, Janice Marie Adams Oct 2015

Principal Leadership Practices In High Poverty K-5 Model Schools In Oregon, Janice Marie Adams

Dissertations and Theses

Children living in poverty in the United States face some of life's greatest challenges, including achieving academic success in school. Evidence is also emerging of a growing income disparity in America that affects families, communities and local labor markets in ways that can undermine the effectiveness of schools serving disadvantaged populations (Duncan & Murnane, 2011). Evidence exists, however, that high academic performance is within the reach of all children in high poverty schools, and that principal leadership is a contributing factor.

This study examined principal leadership practices in three high poverty K-5 elementary schools in Oregon identified as Model schools …
