When You Say Nothing At All: The Predictive Power Of Student Effort On Surveys, Collin Hitt Oct 2015

When You Say Nothing At All: The Predictive Power Of Student Effort On Surveys, Collin Hitt

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Character traits and noncognitive skills are important for human capital development and longrun life outcomes. Research in economics and psychology now shows this clearly. But research into the exact determinants of noncognitive skills have been slowed by a common data limitation: most large-scale datasets do not contain adequate measures of noncognitive skills. This is a particularly acute problem in education policy evaluation. We demonstrate that there are important latent data within any survey dataset that can be used as proxy measures of noncognitive skills. Specifically, we examine the amount of conscientious effort that students exhibit on surveys, as measured by …

Members of the Mycoplasma mycoides cluster' represent important livestock pathogens worldwide. Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides is the etiologic agent of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), which is still endemic in many parts of Africa. We report the genome sequences and annotation of two frequently used challenge strains of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides, Afadé and B237. The information provided will enable downstream 'omics' applications such as proteomics, transcriptomics and reverse vaccinology approaches. Despite the absence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae like cyto-adhesion encoding genes, the two strains showed the presence of protrusions. This phenotype is likely encoded by another set of genes.

Building A Culture Of Hope For Youth At Risk: Supporting Learners With Optimism, Place, Pride, And Purpose, Emily L. Gibson, Robert D. Barr

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

A Culture of Hope provides a blueprint for schools wanting to meet the social/emotional needs of youth placed at risk. While the importance of meeting students’ social/emotional needs is clearly supported in the literature and in the media, teachers and administrators may need help in determining where and how to start. This essay introduces the Culture of Hope, provides an overview of the four Seeds of Hope, and shares links to student and staff surveys as well as methods for analyzing surveys to reveal student and staff needs.

Perceptions Of Community And Risk Behavior Exposure For Youth In At-Risk Environments, Rosemary V. Barnett, Caroline Payne-Purvis, Gerald R. Culen

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

This paper highlights an examination of the relationship between perceptions of community and risk behavior exposure for youth in at-risk environments. Data were collected from 133 youth enrolled in after-school programs in two communities over a three-year period. The Youth Involved in Community Issues (YICI) survey assessed youth perceptions of community on four subscales measuring support, involvement, connectedness, and environment. The Social Behavioral Questionnaire (SBQ), with subscales of access, frequency of use, social behaviors, and neighborhood, asked participants to report risk behaviors that they saw occurring within their local area. Linear regression analysis indicated that youth community (overall score) predicted …

Changes In Litter Quality Caused By Simulated Nitrogen Deposition Reinforce The N-Induced Suppression Of Litter Decay, Linda T. A. Van Diepen, Serita D. Frey, Christopher M. Sthultz, Eric W. Morrison, Rakesh Minocha, Anne Pringle Oct 2015

Changes In Litter Quality Caused By Simulated Nitrogen Deposition Reinforce The N-Induced Suppression Of Litter Decay, Linda T. A. Van Diepen, Serita D. Frey, Christopher M. Sthultz, Eric W. Morrison, Rakesh Minocha, Anne Pringle

Faculty Publications

Rates of nitrogen (N) deposition are increasing in industrialized and rapidly developing nations. Simulated N deposition suppresses plant litter decay rates, in particular for low quality (high lignin) litter. Litter quality is a primary driver of litter decomposition; however, it is not clear how changes in litter quality caused by long-term ecosystem exposure to chronic N additions interact with altered soil N-availability to influence litter decay dynamics. To document the effects of simulated N deposition on litter quality, we conducted a meta-analysis of available litter nutrient data from simulated N deposition experiments in temperate forests. To directly test whether changes …

School of Medicine Publications

Usual sleep duration is a heritable trait correlated with psychiatric morbidity, cardiometabolic disease and mortality, although little is known about the genetic variants influencing this trait. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) of usual sleep duration was conducted using 18 population-based cohorts totaling 47 180 individuals of European ancestry. Genome-wide significant association was identified at two loci. The strongest is located on chromosome 2, in an intergenic region 35- to 80-kb upstream from the thyroid-specific transcription factor PAX8 (lowest P=1.1 × 10 -9). This finding was replicated in an African-American sample of 4771 individuals (lowest P=9.3 × 10 -4). The strongest …

Brown School Faculty Publications

There is strong evidence that participatory approaches to health and participatory women’s groups hold great potential to improve the health of women and children in resource poor settings. It is important to consider if interventions are reaching the most marginalized, and therefore we examined disabled women’s participation in women’s groups and other community groups in rural Nepal. People with disabilities constitute 15% of the world’s population and face high levels of poverty, stigma, social marginalization and unequal access to health resources, and therefore their access to women’s groups is particularly important. We used a mixed methods approach to describe attendance …

Petition For A Writ Of Certiorari To The United States Court Of Appeals For The Ninth Circuit, Jensen V. Exc, Inc., John P. Lavelle, Geoffrey R. Romero, Michael J. Barthelemy Oct 2015

Petition For A Writ Of Certiorari To The United States Court Of Appeals For The Ninth Circuit, Jensen V. Exc, Inc., John P. Lavelle, Geoffrey R. Romero, Michael J. Barthelemy

Faculty Scholarship

The petitioners argue:

1) Supervisory Review is Needed Because the District Court and the Ninth Circuit Automatically Aligned U.S. Highway 160 with Alienated, Non-Indian Fee Land, Ignoring this Court’s Context-Specific, Multifactor Methodology for Determining the Status of Reservation Roadways for Tribal Jurisdictional Purposes.

2) Supervisory Review is Also Necessary Because Both Lower Courts Refused to Apply Supreme Court Precedents Governing Whether an Indian Tribe Retains Treaty-Based Authority over the Conduct of Nonmembers on a Tribe’s Reservation, Effecting an Impermissible Judicial Abrogation of the Navajo Nation’s Congressionally Confirmed, Treaty-Based Jurisdiction in This Case.

3) Supervisory Review is Further Needed Because Both …

Homosexuality In High School: Recognizing A Student's Right To Privacy, Bari Nadworny

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Note argues that high school officials disclosing information about a student's sexual orientation without the student's permission is a violation of the student's constitutional right to informational privacy. Part I examines the Supreme Court's informational privacy jurisprudence. This Part also examines the circuit court opinions that have contributed to the law in this area regarding personal sexual matters. Part II examines the current split of authority between the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, which has held that such a privacy right exists, and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which has held that it does not. Part III …

Death Of A Salesman: The Rise & Unfortunate Potential Demise Of The Full-Time Life Insurance Salesman, Robert M. Rosh

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Article traces the economic and regulatory rise and potential future regulatory demise of the full-time life insurance salesman. It outlines why these salesmen and many of the products that they offer are beneficial to American society, and why public policies should promote both the profession and the products sold by full-time life insurance salesmen. Finally, it suggests some modest regulatory reforms that would promote life insurance sales and the salesmen who make them.

Suspicious Suspect Classes - Are Nonimmigrants Entitled To Strict Scrutiny Review Under The Equal Protection Clause?: An Analysis Of Dandamudi And Leclerc, John Harras

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Part I of this Note provides the background necessary to understand the different alienage classifications, equal protection jurisprudence, and the confusion in the Supreme Court's alienage equal protection precedent. Part II describes the differences of opinion among the circuit courts on the application of the Equal Protection Clause to nonimmigrants. Part III argues, in greater detail, that nonimmigrants are not a suspect class for the reasons stated above.

Reasonable Precaution For The Individual, Dov Waisman Oct 2015

Reasonable Precaution For The Individual, Dov Waisman

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Article has four parts. In Part I, I introduce the question to be explored and describe Barbara Fried's challenge to any attempt to answer that question without summing costs and benefits across persons. Part II responds directly to Fried's challenge, presenting the individualized feasibility principle as a viable, nonaggregative interpretation of reasonable precaution. In Part III, I explore the theoretical underpinnings of the IFP, drawing on a theory of normative ethics known as ex ante contractualism. Part IV concludes.

Autism And The Criminal Defendant, Christine N. Cea Oct 2015

Autism And The Criminal Defendant, Christine N. Cea

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Part I discusses autism spectrum disorders, including the diagnosis and characteristics of autism, and whether autism is linked to criminal behavior. Part II examines whether autism should be an affirmative defense to a crime, and concludes that it should not. However, Part II does propose that autism should be an affirmative defense to specific minor crimes. Part III analyzes potential prejudicial demeanor evidence that might occur when autistic defendants testify in their own defense at a trial. This Part argues that evidence of autism should be admitted in a trial to explain to the jury why an autistic individual …

Rule 55: Why Broadly Interpreting "Otherwise Defend" Protects A Diligent Party's Rights And Encourages An Orderly And Efficient Judicial System, Jessica Ruoff

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Note argues that a uniform interpretation of "otherwise defend" is needed. Part I of this Note discusses the history and purpose of Rule 55, the procedure for entries of default and default judgment, and other alternatives to Rule 55 default judgments. Part II of this Note examines how the language "otherwise defend" has been interpreted differently by the federal circuit courts. Part III of this Note argues that the majority's broad interpretation of "otherwise defend" should be adopted as the uniform interpretation because it is supported by statutory interpretation and the underlying purpose of Rule 55.

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

The purpose of this Article is to examine workers' rights under Islamic law. Companies claiming to be in compliance with the Islamic Shari'ah must look beyond the forms of the transactions and the content of the products they sell. The companies and their Shari'ah advisors must also examine the treatment of the workers employed by the companies. If the workers are not being treated fairly, in accordance with Islamic law, the owners of these companies and their Shari'ah advisors should not claim that the companies and their products are Shari'ah-compliant. As this Article shows, the fair treatment of …

The Influence Of Relationship Status On Hpv Vaccine Decision-Making Among Young Adult Women, Erika L. Thompson Oct 2015

The Influence Of Relationship Status On Hpv Vaccine Decision-Making Among Young Adult Women, Erika L. Thompson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Background: The HPV vaccine is a primary prevention method available to reduce the burden of HPV-related cancers and genital warts. The vaccine is currently approved for catch-up vaccination among women 18 to 26 years of age. Despite this recommendation, the rate of vaccine uptake among this group is considerably low (~34% uptake). One demographic characteristic that is consistently reported as a risk factor for non-vaccination is relationship status, specifically married or monogamous relationships. While the epidemiological data confirm this association, there is a lack of understanding how this risk factor operates. By elucidating the mechanism for this risk factor, …
