He_Rtland: The Violence Of Neoliberalism, Hector Sotomayor Nov 2015

He_Rtland: The Violence Of Neoliberalism, Hector Sotomayor

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Perhaps, under the consciousness of today, “neoliberalism” has defined our world during the previous and current centuries more than any other socioeconomic system. But the evolution of this ideology, which initially aimed to enhance, or rather, reinvent capitalism and individual freedom, has, in essence, induced an unrecognized problem. I argue that neoliberalism is the catalyst for much of the hostility in this globalized society where tensions and poverty are casualties of individual and corporate prosperity. Because of this revelation, I argue that neoliberalism inadvertently instills violence that is both unseen and gendered. In order to formulate my argument, I introduce …

Do Patients Treated For Colorectal Cancer Benefit From General Practitioner Support? A Video Vignette Study, Irene Ngune, Moyez Jiwa, Alexandra Mcmanus, Richard Parsons, Georgina Pagey, Rupert Hodder

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Background: Patients who have been treated for colorectal cancer in Australia can consult their general practitioner (GP) for advice about symptoms or side effects at any time following their treatment. However, there is no evidence that such patients are consistently advised by GPs, and patients experience substantial unmet need for reassurance and advice. Objective: To explore the patient management options selected by GPs to treat a set of patients describing their symptoms following treatment for colorectal cancer. Methods: This was an Internet-based survey. Participants (GPs) viewed 6 video vignettes of actors representing patients who had been treated for colorectal cancer. …

School-Based Concussion Management: Implementation Characteristics Of Student Services Personnel, Jeffrey Garofano Nov 2015

School-Based Concussion Management: Implementation Characteristics Of Student Services Personnel, Jeffrey Garofano

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Concussion is an injury that disproportionately affects children and adolescents and has the potential to negatively impact school performance. Currently, a significant proportion of youth with concussion go unreported due to a lack of effective concussion surveillance procedures. Additionally, many individuals who have daily contact with youth (e.g., parents, teachers) lack training in how to assess or manage a concussion. Schools may be the ideal setting to address both of these problems as they have a high level of access to students and employ personnel (e.g., school psychologists, nurses, social workers, counselors) with experience in assessment and intervention. What is …

Influence Of Water Column Stratification And Nutrient Gradients On The Migratory Behavior Of The Red Tide Dinoflagellate, Karenia Brevis, Matthew Garrett Nov 2015

Influence Of Water Column Stratification And Nutrient Gradients On The Migratory Behavior Of The Red Tide Dinoflagellate, Karenia Brevis, Matthew Garrett

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Diel vertical migration (DVM) can offer motile phytoplankton a competitive advantage over other phytoplankton species. DVM has been well documented in the harmful dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis; however, the extent to which changes in nutrient regimes and density stratification modify migration patterns has not been thoroughly investigated. A 2 m experimental column was constructed with sensors and sampling ports at four depths to obtain fluorescence and temperature measurements and discrete water samples. The environmental parameters of the experimental column represented temperature and nutrient conditions found on the West Florida Shelf (WFS), where Karenia blooms frequently occur. Results demonstrated a clear …

Characterization Of Noise Exposure For High-Volume Restaurant Workers, Desiree Gladieux Nov 2015

Characterization Of Noise Exposure For High-Volume Restaurant Workers, Desiree Gladieux

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Occupational hearing loss resulting from noise exposures encountered in the workplace affects millions of workers and costs hundreds of millions of dollars annually in Workers’ Compensation costs in the United States alone. Some industries have been well studied, and the presence of hazardous noise in the work environment established and documented. The restaurant industry is one in which little current data exists, but in which there may be cause for concern.

This work sought to quantify noise exposures for cooks, servers, and dishwashers and to determine whether or not any of these workers are at risk for Noise Induced Hearing …

The Association Between Sexual Harassment And Suicidality Among College Women, Renee Brown Hangartner Nov 2015

The Association Between Sexual Harassment And Suicidality Among College Women, Renee Brown Hangartner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The prevalence of sexual harassment among college women has been reported to range from 33% to 97% (Klein, Apple, & Khan, 2011; Yoon, Funk, & Kropf, 2010) across the lifespan. In any one year of college, the prevalence of sexual harassment reported by women ranges from 33% to 57% (Crown & Roberts, 2007; Huerta, Cortina, Pang, Torges, & Magley, 2006). The severity and frequency of sexual harassment has been found to be related to reports of psychological distress (Nielsen & Einarsen, 2012), feelings of shame (Yoon et al., 2010), anxiety and depression symptoms (Murdoch, Pryor, Polusny, & Gackstetter, 2007), and …

Design, Fabrication And Analysis Of A Paver Machine Push Bar Mechanism, Mahendra Palnati Nov 2015

Design, Fabrication And Analysis Of A Paver Machine Push Bar Mechanism, Mahendra Palnati

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Now-a-days, the major challenge that’s being faced by the concrete industry is the cleaning of concrete handling equipment. Concrete consists of aggregates, which harden with time, and the transportation of concrete mixture within the plant is a significant problem. This will not only increase the overall maintenance cost, but will lead to loss of raw materials, affect the rate of production, and reduce the lifetime of concrete handling equipment.

The present study focuses on the design and implementation of an adaptive cleaning mechanism in the concrete industry and its importance in achieving efficient cleaning, which is tested to verify its …

North American River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) Presence And Habitat Analysis In Florida As Compared To Historical Data, Samantha Wilber Nov 2015

North American River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) Presence And Habitat Analysis In Florida As Compared To Historical Data, Samantha Wilber

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

North American river otters are considered common in the state of Florida, but their populations have not been studied since the 1980’s. Since that time, Florida’s human population has more than doubled, and many natural areas of Florida have been developed. The aim of this study was to determine the presence or absence of river otters at locations in Florida which they historically inhabited. Forty-six sample sites where otters were historically found were obtained from the Florida Museum of Natural History Mammals Master Database (FMNH MMD). These sites were condensed to two focus areas, in and around Alachua and Collier …

Pleiotropic Effects Of Immune Responses Explain Variation In The Prevalence Of Fibroproliferative Diseases, Shirley B. Russell, Joan C. Smith, Minjun Huang, Joel S. Trupin, Scott M. Williams Nov 2015

Pleiotropic Effects Of Immune Responses Explain Variation In The Prevalence Of Fibroproliferative Diseases, Shirley B. Russell, Joan C. Smith, Minjun Huang, Joel S. Trupin, Scott M. Williams

Dartmouth Scholarship

Many diseases are differentially distributed among human populations. Differential selection on genetic variants in ancestral environments that coincidentally predispose to disease can be an underlying cause of these unequal prevalence patterns. Selected genes may be pleiotropic, affecting multiple phenotypes and resulting in more than one disease or trait. Patterns of pleiotropy may be helpful in understanding the underlying causes of an array of conditions in a population. For example, several fibroproliferative diseases are more prevalent and severe in populations of sub-Saharan ancestry. We propose that this disparity is due to selection for an enhanced Th2 response that confers resistance to …

Screening And Molecular Analysis Of Single Circulating Tumor Cells Using Micromagnet Array, Yu-Yen Huang, Peng Chen, Chun-Hsien Wu, Kazunori Hoshino, Konstantin Sokolov, Nancy Lane, Huaying Liu, Michael Huebschman, Eugene Frenkel, John X.J Zhang Nov 2015

Screening And Molecular Analysis Of Single Circulating Tumor Cells Using Micromagnet Array, Yu-Yen Huang, Peng Chen, Chun-Hsien Wu, Kazunori Hoshino, Konstantin Sokolov, Nancy Lane, Huaying Liu, Michael Huebschman, Eugene Frenkel, John X.J Zhang

Dartmouth Scholarship

Immunomagnetic assay has been developed to detect rare circulating tumor cells (CTCs), which shows clinical significance in cancer diagnosis and prognosis. The generation and fine-tuning of the magnetic field play essential roles in such assay toward effective single-cell-based analyses of target cells. However, the current assay has a limited range of field gradient, potentially leading to aggregation of cells and nanoparticles. Consequently, quenching of the fluorescence signal and mechanical damage to the cells may occur, which lower the system sensitivity and specificity. We develop a micromagnet-integrated microfluidic system for enhanced CTC detection. The ferromagnetic micromagnets, after being magnetized, generate localized …

Considerations On The Psychological Status Of The Patients Undergoing Radical Cystectomy, Mihai Dumitrache, Daniel Liviu Badescu, Stefan Rascu, Oana Denisa Balalau, Bogdan Popescu, Răzvan Valentin Scaunasu, Cristian Balalau

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

The psychological impact on patients suffering radical cystectomy is twofold - (both that of the underlying neoplastic disease and that measured by the quality of life subsequent to surgery) and increases as the urinary derivation technique is less physiological and affects more the local anatomy.

Although there are numerous questionnaires that assess the quality of life of patients with cancer (HRQoL - health related QoL), not many probe bladder cancer morbidity or correlate the different types of urinary diversions’ impact on QoL (quality of life).

We analyzed 39 cases in our clinic who underwent radical cystectomy between August 2013 and …

Oral Manifestations In Acute Leukemia As The First Sign; The Interdisciplinary Approach Of Diagnosis And Treatment, Paunica Stana, Giurgiu Marina, Dumitriu Anca

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Systemic diseases often present associated oral signs and symptoms, which can occur either from the beginning of the disease or during its evolution. In some cases the oral manifestations reveal an undetected and severe disease, like leukemia. According to the encountered oral signs and symptoms and their response to topical/ dental treatment, the dentist and physician should take into account specific additional tests, which could highlight a possible associated systemic disease.

The most frequent oral manifestations associated with leukemia are represented by paleness of oral mucosa/ local abnormal colour of the gum, gingival petechiae, ecchymosis, bleeding associating painless gingival hyperplasia, …

Materials and Methods. This study was performed on a sample of 60 white male mice, NMRI strain, who were divided into 6 groups of 10 animals and treated with 4 new derivatives of dibenzo [a, d] cycloheptene, amitriptyline as a reference substance, or with distilled …

Risk-Taking Behavior And Its Impact On Treatment, Vaccination And Diagnosing, Daniel Maxin Nov 2015

Risk-Taking Behavior And Its Impact On Treatment, Vaccination And Diagnosing, Daniel Maxin

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

We present results from two recent mathematical biology studies that address the effect of risk-taking behavior on epidemic models. We show that when risk-taking prevails over riskavoidance, it is possible to show a detrimental and counterintuitive effect from increasing vaccination and treatment rates over certain critical time intervals. In addition, when risk-taking has a cumulative effect within the population, a lower transmission rate from diagnosed infected individuals may prevent the intended effect of vaccination.

Common Dermatoses In Patients With Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Mircea Tampa, Maria Isabela Sarbu, Clara Matei, Vasile Benea, Simona Roxana Georgescu Nov 2015

Common Dermatoses In Patients With Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Mircea Tampa, Maria Isabela Sarbu, Clara Matei, Vasile Benea, Simona Roxana Georgescu

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a chronic, debilitating syndrome, consisting of intrusive thoughts- which are experienced as inappropriate by the patient and are producing anxiety- and compulsions, defined as repetitive behaviours produced to reduce anxiety. While patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder typically have xerosis, eczema or lichen simplex chronicus, as a result of frequent washing or rubbing their skin, several other disorders which are included in the group of factitious disorders have also been associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder. A close collaboration between the dermatologist and the psychiatrist is therefore mandatory in order to achieve favourable outcomes for these patients. The aim of the …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Finasteride is in present a relatively frequent prescribed drug for male androgenic alopecia. The adverse effects reported by some patients seem to be notable, consisting of various (physical, mental/ neurological, sexual, etc.) manifestations which are encountered both during Finasteride administration and after treatment cessation (in the form of `post-Finasteride syndrome`).

The pharmacological action and the corresponding adverse effects related to Finasteride administration were investigated and published in literature through several and successive studies. In respect to psychiatric disorders, the most notable concern is related to depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts among former users of finasteride with persistent adverse effects. Regarding …

Solving The Mind-Body Problem Through Two Distinct Concepts: Internal-Mental Existence And Internal Mental Reality, Ion G. Motofei, David L. Rowland Nov 2015

Solving The Mind-Body Problem Through Two Distinct Concepts: Internal-Mental Existence And Internal Mental Reality, Ion G. Motofei, David L. Rowland

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

In a previous published paper, we initiated in this journal discussion about new perspectives regarding the organization and functioning of the mind, as a premise for addressing the mind-body problem. In this article, we continue focussing discussion on two distinct but interrelated concepts, internal-mental existence/ entity and internal-mental reality.

These two psycho-physiological subunits of the mind interact each other in the form of an internal-mental interaction, having no sense if one is isolated/ studied separately from the other. In other words, the mind (as a dynamic psycho-physiological construction) has no sense in the absence of this internal mental interaction that …

Differences Between Men And Women With Total Laryngectomy, Bogdan Popescu, Serban Vifor Bertesteanu, Alexandra Oana Paun, Cristian Radu Popescu, Oana Denisa Balalau, Panaiota Dumitrache, Răzvan Valentin Scaunasu, Cristian Balalau

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

The larynx is one of the organs that is usually involved in the tumor growth in the head and neck region and it is the second site of malignant neoplasia of the respiratory tract after the lungs. It is a well-known fact that larynx cancer is more often present in male population, with a ratio of 3:1 male/female because of the higher rate of tobacco and alcohol use. The issues related to total laryngectomy are the loss of voice, swallowing rehabilitation, reeducation of breathing through the tracheostomy, psychological alterations and social pressure. Women tend to be more affected by the …

Cutaneous Manifestations In Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Simona Roxana Georgescu, Cristina Iulia Mitran, Madalina Irina Mitran, Monica Costescu, Vasile Benea, Maria Isabela Sarbu, Mircea Tampa

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Inflammatory bowel diseases have a high frequency in Europe. They are chronic disorders that evolve with relapses and remissions. Clinical features include the signs of underlying inflammatory bowel disease and also signs of extraintestinal manifestations. Cutaneous disorders are the most common extraintestinal manifestations associated with inflammatory bowel diseases, which can be dependent on or independent of gastrointestinal disease activity. The main cutaneous disorders are erythema nodosum and pyodermagangrenosum. The pathogenic mechanisms are not fully understood but it seems that related mechanisms are involved in the development of inflammatory bowel diseases and extraintestinal manifestations. Treatment should be aimed at both the …
