Assessing Student Perceptions Of Indigenous Science Co-Educators, Interest In Stem, And Identity As A Scientist: A Pilot Study, Sarah Alkholy, Fidji Gendron, Tanya Dahms, Maria Pontes Ferreira

Nutrition and Food Science Faculty Research Publications

Minorities are underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce, post-secondary STEM education, and show high academic attrition rates. Academic performance and retention improve when culturally relevant support is provided. The interface of Western science and Indigenous science provides an opportunity for bridging this divide. We hypothesized that there would be regional (U.S.A. vs. Canada) differences amongst post-secondary students regarding these variables: perceptions of traditional Elders as STEM co-educators; interest in STEM; and self-identity as a scientist. We conducted a short-term longitudinal pilot study of an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional, and cross-cultural STEM course in the spring of 2013. This …

An Affective Tool To Assist In Designing Innovations, Rohan Lulham, Clementine Thurgood, Daniel Burton Shank Nov 2015

An Affective Tool To Assist In Designing Innovations, Rohan Lulham, Clementine Thurgood, Daniel Burton Shank

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

While cognitive models of the design process have long dominated, many design innovation approaches advocate the importance of exploring affective concepts such as emotion, meaning and lived experiences in the creation of innovations. We suggest the capacity to think abstractly – to question, make connections and broaden understanding based on affect and meaning – is a fundamental skill for the abductive problem solving characteristic of expert designers. There are, however, few tools to promote questioning and reflection based on affect within the design innovation process. We see a need for such tools in design innovation workshops, particularly for non-designers who …

Life Cycle Environmental Impacts For Anaerobic Treatment Of Domestic Wastewater, Valerie Lauren Wade Nov 2015

Life Cycle Environmental Impacts For Anaerobic Treatment Of Domestic Wastewater, Valerie Lauren Wade

Master’s Theses

The electricity requirement for aeration in conventional activated sludge treatment of domestic wastewater contributes to high costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Anaerobic treatment, on the other hand, requires no aeration and produces methane that can be converted to electricity and heat. However, the effluent from anaerobic treatment contains dissolved methane¿a potent greenhouse gas¿that would ultimately be released to the atmosphere. Therefore, there is a need to assess the life cycle environmental and economic impacts of anaerobic and aerobic treatment technologies to understand the long-term sustainability of these wastewater treatment options.

Photoacoustic Imaging For Ovarian Cancer Detection: System Development And Classification Algorithm, Hai Li Nov 2015

Photoacoustic Imaging For Ovarian Cancer Detection: System Development And Classification Algorithm, Hai Li

Doctoral Dissertations

Ovarian cancer is relatively rare but it has the highest mortality with a five-year survival rate of only 30% comparing with other gynecologic cancers. Most of ovarian cancers are diagnosed at late stages because of no efficacious screening techniques. So there is an urgent need to develop new imaging techniques for early stage ovarian cancer detection. Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) inherently combines the merits of optical imaging and ultrasound imaging. In PAI, photoacoustic waves are generated by illuminating tissue samples with a short laser pulse. Photoacoustic waves are then measured by ultrasound transducers to reconstruct optical absorption at ultrasound resolution, which …

Kinematic Analysis Of Wrist Motion During Simulated Colonoscopy In First-Year Gastroenterology Fellows, Shiva K. Ratuapli, Kevin C. Ruff, Francisco C. Ramirez, Qing Wu, Deepika Mohankumar, Marco Santello, David E. Fleischer

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Gastroenterology trainees acquire skill and proficiency in performing colonoscopies at different rates. The cause for heterogeneous competency among the trainees is unclear. Kinematic analysis of the wrist joint while performing colonoscopy can objectively assess the variation in wrist motion. Our objective was to test the hypothesis that the time spent by the trainees in extreme ranges of wrist motion will decrease as the trainees advance through the fellowship year.

Dehalococcoides Abundance And Alternate Electron Acceptor Effects On Large, Flow-Through Trichloroethene Dechlorinating Columns, Babur S. Mirza, Darwin L. Sorensen, Ryan Dupont, Joan E. Mclean

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Trichloroethene (TCE) in groundwater is a major health concern and biostimulation/bioaugmentation-based strategies have been evaluated to achieve complete reductive dechlorination with varying success. Different carbon sources were hypothesized to stimulate different extents of TCE reductive dechlorination. Ecological conditions that developed different dechlorination stages were investigated by quantitating Dehalococcoides 16S rRNA (Dhc) and reductive dehalogenase gene abundance, and by describing biogeochemical properties of laboratory columns in response to this biostimulation. Eight large columns (183 cm × 15.2 cm), packed with aquifer material from Hill AFB, Utah, that were continuously fed TCE for 7.5 years. Duplicate columns were biostimulated with whey or …

Response To Bullying (Rtb): Behavioral Skills And In Situ Training For Individuals Diagnosed With Intellectual Disabilities, Rebecca Lynn Stannis Nov 2015

Response To Bullying (Rtb): Behavioral Skills And In Situ Training For Individuals Diagnosed With Intellectual Disabilities, Rebecca Lynn Stannis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Bullying is a continuing problem for adults with intellectual disabilities who live in group homes and attend adult day training settings together. Many different intervention approaches have been reviewed. Most research in this area focuses on bullying in schools with typically developing children, and therefore, a need for effective behavioral interventions for adults with intellectual disabilities still remains. Previous research has found success in teaching safety skills to a variety of populations using behavioral skills training (BST) and achieving generalization of these skills using in situ training (IST). This study evaluated BST to teach a response to bullying (RtB) to …

Synthesis, Characterization And Ferroelectric Properties Of Ln-Type Znsno3 Nanostructures, Corisa Kons

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With increasing focus on the ill health and environmental effects of lead there is a greater push to develop Pb-free devices and materials. To this extent, ecofriendly and earth abundant LiNbO3-type ZnSnO3, a derivative of the ABO3 perovskite structure, has a high theoretically predicted polarization making it an excellent choice as a suitable alternative to lead based material such as PZT. In this work we present a novel synthesis procedure for the growth of various ZnSnO3 nanostructures by combined physical/chemical processes. Various ZnSnO3 nanostructures of different dimensions were grown from a ZnO:Al template …
