Size Effects In Human Visual Inspection For Micro/Meso Scale Parts, Sri Harsha Kavuri Jan 2015

Size Effects In Human Visual Inspection For Micro/Meso Scale Parts, Sri Harsha Kavuri

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Visual inspection has been a major method of quality control in conventional manufacturing processes for the last fifty years. Utilizing trained human inspectors to perform this visual inspection has been the most effective means of maintaining quality control. Extensive research has been performed to understand the factors that influence the human inspection process.

In the recent years, there has been a significant emphasis on manufacturing at the smaller end of the size-spectrum such as Micro and Meso scale manufacturing. Quality control at becomes a challenging task due to the extremely small sizes. Several automated visual inspection techniques have been proposed …

Influence Of Spatial Variations Of Railroad Track Stiffness And Material Inclusions On Fatigue Life, Celestin Nkundineza Jan 2015

Influence Of Spatial Variations Of Railroad Track Stiffness And Material Inclusions On Fatigue Life, Celestin Nkundineza

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Railroad transportation is very important for economic growth and effective maintenance is one critical factor for its economic sustainability. The high repetitive forces from a moving railcar induce cyclic stresses that lead to rail bending and potential deterioration due to fatigue crack initiation and propagation. Previous research for prediction of fatigue life has been done under the assumptions of a uniform track bed and a homogeneous rail. However the spatial variation of the track stiffness is expected to increase the maximum stresses in the rail and, therefore, accelerate the fatigue process. The research described in this dissertation is focused on …

Characterization Of Oral Microbiota In Xerostomic Versus Non-Xerostomic Volunteers And In Daily Samples Following Standard Oral Hygiene Practices, Chelsea Myers

Wayne State University Theses

A thesis presented on the characterization of oral microbiota in xerostomic versus non-xerostomic volunteers and in daily samples following standard oral hygiene practices. Xerostomia is a difficult and burdensome disease that can be very difficult to diagnose. Understanding the oral microbiota between these diseased and healthy (non-xerostomic) can give us great insight on new treatments and/or prevention. Goals of the study included determining whether there substantial differences in oral microbial populations between the two groups, and whether varying nightly oral hygiene practices had an impact on next-morning oral microbiota titers or composition. Microbial loads were determined by qPCR using broad-spectrum …

Bound By Law: A Roadmap For The Practical Legalization Of Bdsm, Daniel Haley Jan 2015

Bound By Law: A Roadmap For The Practical Legalization Of Bdsm, Daniel Haley

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that the criminalization of BDSM practices, due to the lack of legal recognition of consent as a defense in BDSM-related injuries, is unconstitutional and harmful. It advocates for legal reform, specifically the creation of a BDSM exception in the Model Penal Code, to protect practitioners' rights and reduce stigma.

Can You Work It? Or Flip It And Reverse It?: Protecting Lgbt Youth From Sexual Orientation Change Efforts, Sanam Assil

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note advocates for raising the minimum age for Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE) from eighteen to twenty-one, arguing that individuals under twenty-one lack the emotional maturity to consent to such therapies. It emphasizes the harmful effects of SOCE, supported by findings from psychological organizations, and proposes incremental legislative changes to eventually achieve a nationwide ban on conversion therapy.

The Future Of Sex Offense Courts: How Expanding Specialized Sex Offense Courts Can Help Reduce Recidivism And Improve Victim Reporting, Catharine Richmond, Melissa Richmond Jan 2015

The Future Of Sex Offense Courts: How Expanding Specialized Sex Offense Courts Can Help Reduce Recidivism And Improve Victim Reporting, Catharine Richmond, Melissa Richmond

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

Specialty sex offense courts are a nascent judicial innovation that seek to improve general public safety by reducing recidivism. Decreased recidivism results from swifter, personalized, experienced, and consistent judicial action that encourages sex offenders to take more responsibility and seek rehabilitative assistance. In these specialized courts, communities of stakeholders work collaboratively to prevent future crime. Although somewhat counterintuitive, specialty courts that offer such intensive and specific attention are often more cost effective and efficient than their traditional counterparts are. This Article posits that sex offense courts should be expanded beyond the handful of jurisdictions where they currently exist, not only …

All You Need Is Leave? Rethinking The Concept Of Paternity Leave, Ifat Matzner-Heruti Jan 2015

All You Need Is Leave? Rethinking The Concept Of Paternity Leave, Ifat Matzner-Heruti

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

According to the common view, fathers should be entitled to paternity leave following the birth or adoption of their children. Such leave, it is believed, will increase fathers' involvement in childcare as well as enhance an equal division of caregiving and work between parents. In order to examine these assumptions, this article investigates the Israeli paternity leave provision, enacted in 1998. According to the data, the provision has been used by only a negligible number of Israeli fathers, and this article aims at exploring possible reasons for this low use. Building upon the Israeli experience as well as other countries' …

Gendering The Compliance Agenda: Feminism, Human Rights And Violence Against Women, Megan Louise Pearce Jan 2015

Gendering The Compliance Agenda: Feminism, Human Rights And Violence Against Women, Megan Louise Pearce

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that while the due diligence standard in international human rights law has been a significant step forward in addressing violence against women, it has not yet delivered real change. The gap between legal promise and reality persists, and the article contends that addressing this gap requires integrating feminist insights into compliance theories. By applying feminist critiques to these theories, the article seeks to illuminate why the due diligence standard has been ineffective in eliminating violence against women and to highlight areas for future research.

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The purpose of the Article is to look at the recognition-or lack thereof-of transsexual people at common law in relation to the "proper" sex and gender with which they associate themselves. This Article will begin by addressing and defining transsexualism and how the medical community's position on this topic has evolved over the years. It will then look at the historical foundations of transsexualism in the common law, especially at the Corbett decision that held sway in England and Wales for over thirty-five years and was followed internationally. The Article will then provide an overview of the current positions in …

Domestic Violence And The Confrontation Clause: The Case For A Prompt Post-Arrest Confrontation Hearing, Robert Hardaway Jan 2015

Domestic Violence And The Confrontation Clause: The Case For A Prompt Post-Arrest Confrontation Hearing, Robert Hardaway

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the challenges posed by the Supreme Court's decision in Crawford v. Washington to domestic violence prosecutions, particularly the increased difficulty in admitting victims' prior statements. It proposes a novel solution: a prompt post-arrest confrontation hearing that allows defendants to cross-examine witnesses shortly after arrest. This procedure aims to balance the defendant's Sixth Amendment right to confrontation with the need to protect victims from intimidation and ensure the admissibility of testimonial evidence at trial.

Nowhere To Run, Nowhere To Hide: The Absence Of Public Policy On Intimate Partner Violence Abrogates The Rights To Health Care And Bodily Integrity Under The South African Constitution, Stu Woolman, Courtenay Sprague

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

An estimated 31-55% of South African women experience lfetime intimate partner violence ("IPV'). The imminent danger of physical, psychological or sexual violence that all South African women face daily not only threatens their very existence, it impairs their development and agency, and thus the ability of each woman to pursue a lfe that reflects her own comprehensive vision of a fulfilling way of being in the world. This article first establishes the legal basis for the proposition that the South African Constitution and South Africa's international obligations require a form of public intervention that has the ability to diminish IP …

Contested Spaces During Transition: Regime Change In Myanmar And Its Implications For Women, Amy Barrow Jan 2015

Contested Spaces During Transition: Regime Change In Myanmar And Its Implications For Women, Amy Barrow

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

This article examines recent political and legal developments in Myanmar to promote and protect Buddhism and their implications for women. Myanmar is currently undergoing political regime change. While periods of transition often present an opportunity to contest stereotypical gender roles and discriminatory cultural practices, a rise in Buddhist ethno-nationalism risks undermining women's "spaces" in society. Drawing on qualitative research interviews with members of civil society and other actors in Yangon, this article discusses the accelerated development of laws on the protection of race and religion alongside the parallel development of Myanmar's first law specifically addressing violence against women, to explore …

Keeping Our Eyes On The Prize: Examining Minnesota As A Means For Assuring Achievement Of The 'Triple Aim' Under The Aca, Deborah R. Farringer

Law Faculty Scholarship

A little more than four years after enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (“ACA”), daily headlines still abound on newspapers and websites across the country highlighting both successes and failures of the ACA. In analyzing those successes and failures, especially in the context of care delivery, it is important to take a step back to consider the stated goals of the ACA, which goals have their origins in a premise first proposed by Dr. Donald M. Berwick and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (“IHI”) in 2006 referred to as the “Triple Aim.” The Triple Aim …

Sir John Randolph's Reports Of Cases In The General Court Of Virginia (1729-1735), William Hamilton Bryson

Law Faculty Publications

This second edition of Sir John Randolph's Virginia reports was prompted by the discovery in the Library of Congress of another manuscript copy, which was heretofore unknown. I would like to thank Nathan Dorn, of the Law Department of the Library of Congress for bringing it to light. The importance of this discovery is the addition of three cases to the first edition, which was published over a hundred years ago.

In this new edition of these law reports, I have presented these cases in a more usable format for members of the legal profession by extending the abbreviations of …
