Patents, Innovation, And Performance Of Venture Capital-Backed Ipos, Jerry X. Cao, Fuwei Jiang, Jay R Ritter Jan 2015

Patents, Innovation, And Performance Of Venture Capital-Backed Ipos, Jerry X. Cao, Fuwei Jiang, Jay R Ritter

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study the predictive power of patents on the long-run performance of venture capital (VC)-backed initial public offerings (IPOs). We show that VC-backed IPOs that have at least one patent at the time of the IPO substantially outperform other VC-backed IPOs, with 3-year buy-and-hold market-adjusted returns of -7.1% vs. -23.3%. On average, VC-backed IPOs without patents perform similarly to non-VC-backed IPOs. We also report that VC-backed IPOs from 1981-1998 outperformed other IPOs, but the pattern has reversed for IPOs from 1999-2006. Although a smaller proportion of non-VC-backed IPOs possess patents, those with patents also outperform those without patents.

Diversity In Medical School Admission: Insights From Personnel Recruitment And Selection, Filip Lievens Jan 2015

Diversity In Medical School Admission: Insights From Personnel Recruitment And Selection, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This issue of Medical Education includes four papers that focus upon recruitment and selection. My personal involvement with this field has occurred through my research on situational judgement tests (SJTs), most of which has been conducted in the broader field of personnel recruitment and selection for the workforce. As such, I read the four studies with two questions in mind: (i) on what issues have the respective strands of recruitment and selection diversity research in the medical education and workforce domains converged? (ii) What new insights emerging from workforce diversity can inform medical education research?

Establishing Hr Professionals' Influence And Credibility: Lessons From The Capital Markets And Investment Banking Sector, Paul Aldrich, Graham Dietz, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, P.Eter Hamilton

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Through two separate studies involving 47 interviews inside 22 institutions in the capital markets and investment banking sector, we explore the levels of influence and sources of credibility for senior HR professionals, and examine the challenges they face in establishing credibility. We compare these findings against previous research, which has identified several determinants of HR's influence and credibility. Our findings confirm that HR's modest influence is contingent on the predispositions and convictions of key stakeholders, notably the CEO, but also depends on the decision being taken. We find that the basis for senior HR professionals' credibility is more individual than …

Neoliberalism, Interrupted. Edited By Mark Goodale And Nancy Postero. Stanford: Stanford University Press, 2013. Pp. 317, Rosalynn A. Vega

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Neoliberalism, Interrupted presents Latin America as a global laboratory for new forms of governance, economic structures, and social mobilization. The volume’s title signals a repeated theme throughout the chapters: in Latin America, neoliberalism is simultaneously being challenged and naturalized. At present, Latin America is a site of social, political, and economic experimentation on the one hand and intractable structural vulnerability, violent resistance, and retrenchment on the other. New forms of contestation render other potential ideologies for radical social change unthinkable.

The Due Process Conundrum: Using Matthews V. Eldridge As A Standard For Private Hospitals Under The Healthcare Quality Improvement Act, Amy L. Moore Jan 2015

The Due Process Conundrum: Using Matthews V. Eldridge As A Standard For Private Hospitals Under The Healthcare Quality Improvement Act, Amy L. Moore

Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the procedural due process protections afforded to physicians under the Health Care Quality Improvement Act of 1986 (HCQIA), focusing on the statutory requirement of “adequate notice and hearing” in professional peer review proceedings. Although HCQIA was enacted to promote effective peer review and improve the quality of medical care by granting immunity to hospitals and review bodies, the statute conditions immunity on compliance with certain fairness standards. The Article identifies a doctrinal gap between the statute’s safe harbor provisions and the broader, undefined requirement of adequacy, noting that courts frequently resolve immunity questions at summary judgment under …

Social Media Best Practices In Academic Libraries 2015, Sue Robinson, Bettina Peacemaker, Emily Hurst

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Data

While academic libraries worldwide have embraced social media as tools to inform and connect with users, behaviors and expectations are evolving and platforms are growing. In order to understand current trends and use of social media in libraries, VCU Libraries created and conducted an online survey using SurveyMonkey. Our approach was informed by the study of social media and public relations practice conducted by Wright and Hinson (Wright, Donald K. and Michelle Drifka Hinson. 2015. “Examining Social and Emerging Media Use in Public Relations Practice: A Ten-Year Longitudinal Analysis.” Public Relations Journal 9).

The VCU Libraries survey consisted of 21 …

The Evidentiary Rules Of Engagement In The War Against Domestic Violence, Erin R. Collins Jan 2015

The Evidentiary Rules Of Engagement In The War Against Domestic Violence, Erin R. Collins

Law Faculty Publications

Our criminal justice system promises defendants a fair and just adjudication of guilt, regardless of the character of the alleged offense. Yet, from mandatory arrest to "no-drop" prosecution policies, the system's front-end response to domestic violence reflects the belief that it differs from other crimes in ways that permit or require the adaptation of criminal justice response mechanisms. Although scholars debate whether these differential responses are effective or normatively sound, the scholarship leaves untouched the presumption that, once the adjudicatory phase is underway, the system treats domestic violence offenses like any other crime.

This Article reveals that this presumption is …

Over the past 15 years, horseshoe crabs in Connecticut have gone from being considered a nuisance species to a species of Greatest Conservation Need in 2015. This has happened through first, its discovery as an economically important species, second through research of its ecological role in coastal estuaries, and third, through education of the public concerning its role in the environment and their own health. To manage horseshoe crab populations successfully requires long term monitoring, research and education. The use of annual or biannual trawl data trends to assess the success of management decisions is limited due to the high …

Evaluation Of The Developmental Toxicity Of Lead In The Danio Rerio Body, Nicole M. Roy, Sarah Dewolf, Bruno Carneiro Jan 2015

Evaluation Of The Developmental Toxicity Of Lead In The Danio Rerio Body, Nicole M. Roy, Sarah Dewolf, Bruno Carneiro

Biology Faculty Publications

Lead has been utilized throughout history and is widely distributed and mobilized globally. Although lead in the environment has been somewhat mitigated, the nature of lead and its extensive uses in the past prohibit it from being completely absent from our environment and exposure to lead is still a public health concern. Most studies regarding lead toxicity have focused on the brain. However, little is found in the literature on the effects of lead in other tissues. Here, we utilize the zebrafish model system to investigate effects of lead exposure during early developmental time windows at 24, 48 and 72 …

Marriage Equality Comes To Wisconsin, Carl W. Tobias Jan 2015

Marriage Equality Comes To Wisconsin, Carl W. Tobias

Law Faculty Publications

Marriage equality has swept America. Numerous federal judges, including Western District of Wisconsin Judge Barbara Crabb, have invalidated state proscriptions on same-sex marriage. This paper scrutinizes U.S. litigation, Crabb’s opinion, Seventh Circuit affirmance, and Supreme Court resolution. Finding that Wisconsin shows how to efficaciously institute full marriage equality, even as other states have not, the piece affords future suggestions.

The Market For Leadership In Corporate Litigation, Jessica M. Erickson Jan 2015

The Market For Leadership In Corporate Litigation, Jessica M. Erickson

Law Faculty Publications

Conventional wisdom has long held that leadership decisions in corporate litigation are best left to the lawyers. Even as the world of corporate litigation has changed dramatically, courts have consistently relied on the lawyers themselves to decide who among them will control litigation decisions. As a result, leadership decisions in corporate litigation are almost always made in private negotiations and back room deals. This Article pulls back the curtain on these decisions, using empirical data to conduct the first in-depth examination into the market for leadership in corporate litigation. This examination reveals a market that bears little resemblance to the …

Publicity Rules For Public Trusts, Allison Anna Tait Jan 2015

Publicity Rules For Public Trusts, Allison Anna Tait

Law Faculty Publications

That museums are public trusts is a truism in academic discourse and industry discussion. What various commentators mean when they speak about museums as public trusts, however, is less clear. This Article untangles and analyzes the various meanings of "'public trust" and how these meanings translate into regulatory systems. I propose that two predominant meanings-the public resource and trust law meanings-jointly constitute the definition of a public trust, and that each meaning has a consequent regulatory framework. These definitional and regulatory frameworks coexist without conflict in most contexts. In the context of deaccessioning, however, they collide.

Deaccessioning-the practice of a museum …

This chapter addresses greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation measures in the US energy sector, and, specifically, those applying to the US electric power industry. The focus is on the systems of federal, state, regional, and local regulation of GHG emissions associated with electricity generation, transmission and distribution, concentrating on the regulatory trends likely to have the largest impacts on mitigating GHG emissions. In addition, this section will discuss the extent to which these systems of regulating GHG emissions have evolved over the past decade.

Wagering On The Lives Of Strangers: The Insurable Interest Requirement In The Life Insurance Secondary Market, Peter N. Swisher Jan 2015

Wagering On The Lives Of Strangers: The Insurable Interest Requirement In The Life Insurance Secondary Market, Peter N. Swisher

Law Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to explore and analyze the crucial inter- relationship and the present tension existing between various life settlement alternatives and the insurable interest requirement for life insurance. Does the 240-year-old insurable interest doctrine adequately meet the needs of a modern society in recognizing a secondary market for life in- surance? If so, what additional remedies, if any, are available to both the insured and the insurer to legally protect the contractual rights and reasonable expectations of the parties?

The Problems Inherent In Litigating Employer Free Exercise Rights, Henry L. Chambers Jr.

Law Faculty Publications

This brief Article proceeds in four parts. Part I discusses the Supreme Court's recent cases that address employer free exercise rights. Part II notes problems that accompany providing free exercise rights to employers. Part III explores the expansion of employer prerogative in the context of providing employers additional free exercise rights. Part IV considers problems that arise when employee rights are not deemed central to litigation regarding employer free exercise rights. The Article concludes by proposing a refraining of the free exercise issue that will consider how to account for the interests of the employer, its stakeholders, and its employees …

Size Effects In Human Visual Inspection For Micro/Meso Scale Parts, Sri Harsha Kavuri Jan 2015

Size Effects In Human Visual Inspection For Micro/Meso Scale Parts, Sri Harsha Kavuri

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Visual inspection has been a major method of quality control in conventional manufacturing processes for the last fifty years. Utilizing trained human inspectors to perform this visual inspection has been the most effective means of maintaining quality control. Extensive research has been performed to understand the factors that influence the human inspection process.

In the recent years, there has been a significant emphasis on manufacturing at the smaller end of the size-spectrum such as Micro and Meso scale manufacturing. Quality control at becomes a challenging task due to the extremely small sizes. Several automated visual inspection techniques have been proposed …

Influence Of Spatial Variations Of Railroad Track Stiffness And Material Inclusions On Fatigue Life, Celestin Nkundineza Jan 2015

Influence Of Spatial Variations Of Railroad Track Stiffness And Material Inclusions On Fatigue Life, Celestin Nkundineza

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Railroad transportation is very important for economic growth and effective maintenance is one critical factor for its economic sustainability. The high repetitive forces from a moving railcar induce cyclic stresses that lead to rail bending and potential deterioration due to fatigue crack initiation and propagation. Previous research for prediction of fatigue life has been done under the assumptions of a uniform track bed and a homogeneous rail. However the spatial variation of the track stiffness is expected to increase the maximum stresses in the rail and, therefore, accelerate the fatigue process. The research described in this dissertation is focused on …

Characterization Of Oral Microbiota In Xerostomic Versus Non-Xerostomic Volunteers And In Daily Samples Following Standard Oral Hygiene Practices, Chelsea Myers

Wayne State University Theses

A thesis presented on the characterization of oral microbiota in xerostomic versus non-xerostomic volunteers and in daily samples following standard oral hygiene practices. Xerostomia is a difficult and burdensome disease that can be very difficult to diagnose. Understanding the oral microbiota between these diseased and healthy (non-xerostomic) can give us great insight on new treatments and/or prevention. Goals of the study included determining whether there substantial differences in oral microbial populations between the two groups, and whether varying nightly oral hygiene practices had an impact on next-morning oral microbiota titers or composition. Microbial loads were determined by qPCR using broad-spectrum …

Bound By Law: A Roadmap For The Practical Legalization Of Bdsm, Daniel Haley Jan 2015

Bound By Law: A Roadmap For The Practical Legalization Of Bdsm, Daniel Haley

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that the criminalization of BDSM practices, due to the lack of legal recognition of consent as a defense in BDSM-related injuries, is unconstitutional and harmful. It advocates for legal reform, specifically the creation of a BDSM exception in the Model Penal Code, to protect practitioners' rights and reduce stigma.

Can You Work It? Or Flip It And Reverse It?: Protecting Lgbt Youth From Sexual Orientation Change Efforts, Sanam Assil

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note advocates for raising the minimum age for Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE) from eighteen to twenty-one, arguing that individuals under twenty-one lack the emotional maturity to consent to such therapies. It emphasizes the harmful effects of SOCE, supported by findings from psychological organizations, and proposes incremental legislative changes to eventually achieve a nationwide ban on conversion therapy.

The Future Of Sex Offense Courts: How Expanding Specialized Sex Offense Courts Can Help Reduce Recidivism And Improve Victim Reporting, Catharine Richmond, Melissa Richmond Jan 2015

The Future Of Sex Offense Courts: How Expanding Specialized Sex Offense Courts Can Help Reduce Recidivism And Improve Victim Reporting, Catharine Richmond, Melissa Richmond

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

Specialty sex offense courts are a nascent judicial innovation that seek to improve general public safety by reducing recidivism. Decreased recidivism results from swifter, personalized, experienced, and consistent judicial action that encourages sex offenders to take more responsibility and seek rehabilitative assistance. In these specialized courts, communities of stakeholders work collaboratively to prevent future crime. Although somewhat counterintuitive, specialty courts that offer such intensive and specific attention are often more cost effective and efficient than their traditional counterparts are. This Article posits that sex offense courts should be expanded beyond the handful of jurisdictions where they currently exist, not only …
