Positive Psychological Capital, Need Satisfaction, Performance, And Well-Being In Actors And Stunt People, Brian Hite

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Positive psychological capital (PsyCap), a second-order construct formed from optimism, hope, resilience, and self-efficacy, has predicted the performance and psychological well-being of a variety of full-time workers, and mediators of the relationships between PsyCap and performance and psychological well-being have rarely been examined. Using self-determination theory, broaden-and-build theory, and the conceptual framework of positive psychology, this study was an exploration of (a) the relationships among PsyCap, (b) basic psychological need satisfaction (i.e., autonomy, competence, relatedness), and (c) psychological well-being and performance using a sample of 103 working actors and stunt people. A serial mediation model was proposed whereby PsyCap predicted …

Apartheid In France: Galvanization Of Political Concern For The Role Of Ethnic Identities In French Society, Francesca Talley Diggs

Honors Theses

The French state's colorblind policy prescription is the base of a contentious, current debate over whether or not the government should acknowledge ethnic and racial components of its citizens and collect such data from minority groups. An increasingly colorful population presents new questions to the framework of French identity, legally blind to ethnicity, and tests the durability of the French model. Has the role of ethnic identity in France become a legitimate political concern under President Hollande's administration despite legislation that outlaws ethnic data collection? Is the illegality of ethnic statistics detrimental to combatting discrimination and social fragmentation in France? …

Historical And Theological Perspectives On The Rise Of Arminianism And The Place Of Seventh-Day Adventism In The Calvinist-Arminian Debate, Denis Fortin

Faculty Publications

This article provides a brief historical survey of some of the theological issues raised by Arminius and The Remonstrance, and seeks to identify the key theological arguments that anchor the Arminian perspective of the Adventist doctrine of salvation. Four hundred years ago, in 1610, a group of Dutch pastors and theologians published a document in which they responded to the accusations of heresy leveled against the teachings of their colleague, Reformed theologian Jacobus Arminius, who had recently died (1609). This document encapsulated Arminian teachings on the doctrine of salvation in five points and subsequently became known as The Remonstrance …

The Unity Of The Church And Church Authority: A Comparative Study Of The Views And Practice Of Alexander Campbell And Ellen G. White, Wendy Ann Jackson

Dissertations

Problem. A clear understanding of the nature of church unity and the role of authority in the maintenance of unity is imperative for the church in the face of its increasing growth and diversity. While a considerable volume of literature addresses the topic of unity of the church, little attention has been paid to the historical dimensions of the differing viewpoints on church authority, which present contemporary obstacles to Christian unity.

Purpose. In an attempt to address this void, this dissertation examines the views of Alexander Campbell and Ellen White with regard to the nature of church unity and how …

The Influence Of Shame On The Frequency Of Self-Controlled Feedback And Motor Learning, Justin Ostrowski, Jared Porter Jan 2015

The Influence Of Shame On The Frequency Of Self-Controlled Feedback And Motor Learning, Justin Ostrowski, Jared Porter

Research Papers

Making learners aware of their mistakes is a frequent strategy used by practitioners; the common assumption is that doing this will ultimately lead to improvements in motor behavior. However, making someone aware of their errors, especially in front of their peers, can cause the person to feel ashamed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of induced shame on the performance of a novel motor skill. More specifically, how shame effects the frequency of self-controlled feedback and the learning of a novel motor skill. Participants (N = 80) practiced a manual tracking task on a rotary pursuit …

Towards The Law Of Legal Services, Andrew M. Perlman Jan 2015

Towards The Law Of Legal Services, Andrew M. Perlman

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Imagine that someone asks you how legal services are regulated in the United States. You might answer that lawyers need a license in the jurisdictions where they intend to practice, typically after graduating from an ABA-accredited law school and passing the bar examination. You could explain that lawyers are governed by rules of professional conduct and subject to discipline, including disbarment, for failing to comply. You also might mention the growing patchwork of state and federal regulations that govern lawyer behavior. Each of these answers offers a slightly different perspective on the regulation of legal services, but they share one …

A Behavioral Theory Of Legal Ethics, Andrew M. Perlman Jan 2015

A Behavioral Theory Of Legal Ethics, Andrew M. Perlman

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Imagine a lawyer who discovers that a client has several smoking gun documents that will doom the client’s case if produced in discovery. Also assume the client tells the lawyer to use all lawful methods to avoid producing the information. Some legal ethicists argue that the lawyer should comply with the client’s instruction and pursue every permissible tactic, i.e., go right up to the line but not cross it. Critics of this so-called “dominant view” suggest that the lawyer should take into account other considerations, such as the interests of justice or morality. One important practical problem with these competing …

The Limits Of Moral Argument: Reason And Conviction In Tadros' Philosophy Of Punishment (With Response By Victor Tadros), Eric Blumenson, Victor Tadros Jan 2015

The Limits Of Moral Argument: Reason And Conviction In Tadros' Philosophy Of Punishment (With Response By Victor Tadros), Eric Blumenson, Victor Tadros

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

For generations, philosophers of punishment have sought to revise or combine established theories of punishment in a way that could reconcile the utilitarian aims of punishment with the demands of deontological justice. Victor Tadros’ recent work addresses the same problem, but answers it with an entirely original theory of punishment based on the duties criminals acquire by committing their crimes. The unexpected appearance of a new rationale for punishment has already inspired a robust dialogue between Tadros and his critics on many of the individual claims that, linked together, comprise his argument. This critique focuses instead on Tadros’ theory as …

Honors Theses

Using a survey conducted among college students at Andrews University, this study focused on substance use and sexual behaviors of students and the presence of familial substance use problems. Analysis indicated a significant association between substance use problems of fathers and their children's substance use. There was a stronger statistical association between father's substance use problems and male children's alcohol use. In addition there was a significant relationship between grandparents substance use and youth sexual behavior for both genders. There is a need for further analysis of this study.
