Changes In The Ideal Body Type, Jessica L. Hoffman Nov 2015

Changes In The Ideal Body Type, Jessica L. Hoffman

University Honors Program

The human body comes in all shapes and sizes. Each different body shape allows onlookers to evaluate at least some aspects of the subject’s lifestyle and priorities. All eras choose a body type that they exalt above the rest. The goal of this research is to evaluate the considered ideal body type from three different eras in order to better understand these time periods and their values. A compilation of books and journal articles were used from the Cunningham Memorial Library Database, the library itself, and other personal libraries to better understand this topic. The most pertinent question was what …

Issues Within Nursing Facilities Involving Quality Of Care For The Elderly, Kendal Fluhr Nov 2015

Issues Within Nursing Facilities Involving Quality Of Care For The Elderly, Kendal Fluhr

University Honors Program

The elderly population in the U.S. is growing each and every year. As this population grows, so does the number of senior citizens in need of constant care. Many are put into nursing homes instead of staying with family or receiving in-home care. The issue with this is that far too many nursing facilities do not give high quality care to residents. The goal of this study was to investigate what concerns are common at nursing homes and what can be done to resolve these problems. Based on research studies, articles, statistics, and informational websites, it was found that some …

The Effects Of Music On Education And Early Literacy: An Insight On Defining Literacy And The Use Of Music In The Classroom, Lindsey Hawkins Nov 2015

The Effects Of Music On Education And Early Literacy: An Insight On Defining Literacy And The Use Of Music In The Classroom, Lindsey Hawkins

University Honors Program

The purpose of this essay is to examine the effects that music has on education and literacy, and to provide insight on how to go about using music in a classroom. First, the essay will define the word ‘literacy,’ and prove why this is important, and then describe how literacy is taught in a classroom using phonics. Then, it will take a look at how music affects the student brain, and how those effects are linked directly to the way students process reading, writing, and communication. Finally, this essay will look at the direct effects that music has on education …

The Effect Of Ultralow-Dose Antibiotics Exposure On Soil Nitrate And N2o Flux, Stephanie L. Devries, Madeline Loving, Xiqing Li, Pengfei Zhang Nov 2015

The Effect Of Ultralow-Dose Antibiotics Exposure On Soil Nitrate And N2o Flux, Stephanie L. Devries, Madeline Loving, Xiqing Li, Pengfei Zhang

Publications and Research

Exposure to sub-inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics has been shown to alter the metabolic activity of micro-organisms, but the impact on soil denitrification and N2O production has rarely been reported. In this study, incubation and column transport experiments were conducted on soils exposed to as many as four antibiotics in the ng·kg−1 range (several orders of magnitude below typical exposure rates) to evaluate the impact of ultralow dose exposure on net nitrate losses and soil N2O flux over time. Under anaerobic incubation conditions, three antibiotics produced statistically significant dose response curves in which denitrification was stimulated at some doses and inhibited …

Rights, Solidarity, And The Animal Welfare State, Jes L. Harfeld Nov 2015

Rights, Solidarity, And The Animal Welfare State, Jes L. Harfeld

Between the Species

This article argues that aspects of the animal rights view can be constructively modulated through a communitarian approach and come to promote animal welfare through the social contexts of expanded caring communities. The Nordic welfare state is presented as a conceivable caring community within which animals could be viewed and treated appropriately as co-citizens with solidarity based rights and duties.

Mercury In Coniferous And Deciduous Upland Forests In Northern New England, Usa: Implications Of Climate Change, J. B. Richardson, A. J. Friedland Nov 2015

Mercury In Coniferous And Deciduous Upland Forests In Northern New England, Usa: Implications Of Climate Change, J. B. Richardson, A. J. Friedland

Dartmouth Scholarship

Climatic changes in the northeastern US are expected to cause coniferous stands to transition to deciduous stands over the next hundred years. Mercury (Hg) sequestration in forest soils may change as a result. In order to understand potential effects of such a transition, we studied aboveground vegetation and soils at paired coniferous and deciduous stands on eight mountains in Vermont and New Hampshire, USA.

In The Face Of Overwhelming Evidence, Let’S Get Real, June Oscar, Elizabeth Elliot Nov 2015

In The Face Of Overwhelming Evidence, Let’S Get Real, June Oscar, Elizabeth Elliot

Talking Heads Seminar Series

In 2007 the women of the Fitzroy Valley embarked on a courageous journey of societal recovery and restoration. They reversed the conversation on alcohol. The destructive impacts of drinking could no longer be confined to false arguments of the right to buy, or blaming individual irresponsibility. The women’s campaign to restrict the supply of alcohol was driven by a belief that this behaviour should not be normalised. They knew that the revitalisation of cultural practices and interconnected structures of family support and care was vital to empowering today’s community.

In this Talking Heads seminar, June Oscar and Liz Elliott combine …

Epistemic Mutations: Material Object Engagement In Exhibition Making, Ane Pilegaard Nov 2015

Epistemic Mutations: Material Object Engagement In Exhibition Making, Ane Pilegaard

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The paper investigates how experimental design practices in pre-exhibition object handling can unfold the materially embedded knowledge production of museum objects. Even though material objects are recognized as key elements in museum practice, concerns for their specific material qualities, such as texture, color, weight, etc., seldom function as primary drivers during the curating and design phases in exhibition making. This is partly due to preservation issues – the fact that direct object handling must be limited – but is also a result of dominating textual practices. This paper argues that, if the materially embedded knowledge of museum objects is to …

The Role Of Doing And Making Models With Materials: Outlining “Designerly And Human-Centred Entrepreneurship”, Kirsten Bonde Sørensen, Winie Evers Nov 2015

The Role Of Doing And Making Models With Materials: Outlining “Designerly And Human-Centred Entrepreneurship”, Kirsten Bonde Sørensen, Winie Evers

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper seeks to demonstrate the central role of making and creating models in what we call “designerly and human-centred entrepreneurship”. We refer to empirics from studies of Danish entrepreneurs working on how to develop their businesses. In Drucker ́s (2001) “Management Challenges for the 21st Century” he predicts the new paradigms of management will change and continue to change our basic assumptions about the practices and principles of management. One of the key influences is that of design. 10 years later Johansson & Woodilla argue there is a need for a paradigmatic widening within Design Management, since, if it …

Friends "For Good" - Wicked: A New Musical And The Idealization Of Friendship, Valerie Lynn Schrader Nov 2015

Friends "For Good" - Wicked: A New Musical And The Idealization Of Friendship, Valerie Lynn Schrader

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

This rhetorical analysis explores the relationship between the two main characters, Elphaba and G(a)linda, in the musical Wicked through the interpersonal communication lens of friendship. This article focuses on the role that friendship plays in the musical and suggests that friendship is a relationship that can be stronger than romantic relationships. Through the application of Rawlins’ work on friendship to the relationship between Elphaba and G(a)linda, this analysis suggests that friendship is the most prominent relationship in Wicked. Wicked offers an im-portant message to theatre-goers: Friendship is something to be valued and cherished.

Creating Community Outside Of The Classroom: Strategies For Integrating Second Life Into The Interpersonal Communication Course, Elizabeth Tolman

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

The educational opportunities for Second Life across various courses have been well documented in the literature. However, instructors new to teaching online may not have explored Second Life as an instructional resource and may perceive using Second Life as overwhelming. For this assignment, students create an avatar and interact with other avatars in Second Life. This assignment can be used in the online or face-to-face communication course. Second Life provides a context where students can participate in interactions with other avatars, their classmates, and the instructor. Students observe and analyze self-disclosure, interpersonal deception, verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and additional interpersonal …

Constructing Space And Time For Work And Family: A Structuration Perspective On Bed And Breakfasts, Jennifer A. Butler, Daniel P. Modaff Nov 2015

Constructing Space And Time For Work And Family: A Structuration Perspective On Bed And Breakfasts, Jennifer A. Butler, Daniel P. Modaff

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

This qualitative study explored how bed and breakfast owners communicatively construct privacy while operating a business out of their personal home. One hundred eighty-two B&B owners from 20 U.S. states and 20 countries responded to an electronic qualitative questionnaire that, in part, explored the issue of privacy. Three themes emerged from the data, including: traditional organizational structures, perception of availability, and banking of time and space. These themes revealed that the owners of the nontraditional businesses relied upon recognizable organizational structures used in more traditional organizations to create and maintain private space and time. They also engaged in communication with …

Constitutional Rights In Post-9/11 America, Meredith Aby Nov 2015

Constitutional Rights In Post-9/11 America, Meredith Aby

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

On September 21, 2011, Meredith Aby accepted an invitation to speak on the subject of freedom of speech and association in ten years after 9/11. Her speech, which was sponsored by the Department of Communication Studies at Minnesota State University, the Kessel Peace Institute, and the Mankato Area Activist Collective, is more than a powerful defense of free speech the right to dissent. It is the personal account of an ordinary person of extraordinary conviction—an activist, a mother, a partner, a teacher, and a debate coach—for whom standing up for right to oppose one’s government is more than an abstract …

Public Theology In The Face Of Pain And Suffering: A Proletarian Perspective, Florence Juma Nov 2015

Public Theology In The Face Of Pain And Suffering: A Proletarian Perspective, Florence Juma

Luther Faculty Publications

A basic understanding of theology is the quest for knowledge of the Divine—the study of God. But why, one may ask, undertake such an endeavour, and to what end? My simple response would be, to know God is to enhance and enrich my life and service. To know God is to understand His creation – humanity and, the created context. I practice theology to learn more about God and His creation. In the process, that knowledge serves to improve my professional practice as a spiritual care provider in a public health institution. Thus, originates the burden of this task – …

Recurrent Hepatocellular Carcinoma In Patient With Crohn’S Disease: Incidental Or Expected Outcome Of Azathioprine?, Youssef Botros, Mary Mathews, Hiren Patel, Nihar Shah Md, Walid Baddoura, Andrew De La Torre

Gastroenterology

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) usually occurs in patients with underlying risk factors such as liver cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis B. Although patients with Crohn's disease (CD) are at an increased risk to develop malignancies such as colon cancer, the incidence of HCC in this population is extremely rare. We report a case of 62-year-old male with long history of CD treated with azathioprine (AZA) and aminosalicylic acid (ASA) who was incidentally diagnosed with HCC, for which left hepatectomy was done. Four years later during routine follow-up, patient had another hepatic lesion and underwent resection of the mass. The mechanism of occurrence …

Paediatrics Publications

Background: Current developments in science and the media have now placed pregnant women in a precarious situation as they are charged with the responsibility to navigate through information sources to make the best decisions for her pregnancy. Yet little is known regarding how pregnant women want to receive and use health information in general, let alone information regarding the uncertain risks to pregnancy in everyday household products such as phthalates found in cosmetics and canned food liners. Using phthalates as an example, this study investigated how pregnant women obtain, evaluate, and act on information regarding their pregnancy. Methods: Pregnant women …
