An Examination Of The Disparity Between Self-Identified Versus Legally-Identified Rape Victimization: A Pilot Study, Dorothy F. Marsil, Corinne Mcnamara

Faculty Articles

Objective: Researchers compared rape victimization based on self-identification to the current, federal legal definition in a pilot study of college students. Methods: The sample was comprised of 1,648 (69.8% female; 30.2% male) college students who completed the SES-SFV online. Results: Based on the current, legal definition of rape, 9.4% (11.1% female; 5.2% male) of students had been raped since being enrolled, but only 2.9% of students self-identified as being raped. Moreover, 15.1% of students reported ever being raped, with females acknowledging higher rates (19.7%) than males (4.3%). Conclusions: Rape continues to be a major issue for colleges and universities. A …

The Modulation Of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Toxicity As A Function Of The Interplay Between Uptake And Efflux Transporters, Renato J. Scialis Dec 2015

The Modulation Of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Toxicity As A Function Of The Interplay Between Uptake And Efflux Transporters, Renato J. Scialis

Doctoral Dissertations

Diclofenac (DCF) is commonly used in the treatment of arthritis and pain. Although mechanisms of injury following DCF administration have been characterized, the roles that transporters have as modulators of exposure and toxicity remain unclear. To that end, in vivo transporter knockout (KO) models were used to assess the toxicokinetics of DCF and its major metabolites. DCF and its reactive acyl glucuronide (DCF-AG) were shown to be substrates for the efflux transporter Bcrp. Biliary excretion of DCF and DCF-AG decreased in Bcrp KOs while only DCF-AG plasma levels increased compared to wild-type (WT) mice. DCF-AG was likewise determined to be …

Strategic Decision Making For Organizational Sustainability: The Implications Of Servant Leadership And Sustainable Leadership Approaches, Judita Peterlin, Noel Pearse, Vlado Dimovski Dec 2015

Strategic Decision Making For Organizational Sustainability: The Implications Of Servant Leadership And Sustainable Leadership Approaches, Judita Peterlin, Noel Pearse, Vlado Dimovski

Economic and Business Review

This conceptual paper explores the implications of servant leadership and sustainable leadership for strategic decision making by the top management of an organization. It is argued that a different type of leadership is required if effective strategic decisions are to be made in organizations striving to become more sustainable and that servant leadership and sustainable leadership approaches provide a sound basis to inform these decisions. The contributions of these two leadership approaches are explored, before considering the implications for leadership development. Particularly, the inclusion in leadership development programmes of values based leadership, and the development of integrative thinking, is discussed.

Antagonistic Interactions Between The Africanweaver Ant Oecophylla Longinoda And The Parasitoid Anagyrus Pseudococci Potentially Limits Suppression Of The Invasive Mealybug Rastrococcus Iceryoides, Chrysantus M. Tanga, Sunday Ekesi, Prem Govender, Peterson W. Nderitu, Samira A. Mohamed

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The ant Oecophylla longinoda Latreille forms a trophobiotic relationship with the invasive mealybug Rastrococus iceryoides Green and promotes the latter’s infestations to unacceptable levels in the presence of their natural enemies. In this regard, the antagonistic interactions between the ant and the parasitoid Anagyrus pseudococci Girault were assessed under laboratory conditions. The percentage of parasitism of R. iceryoides by A. pseudococci was significantly higher on “ant-excluded” treatments (86.6% ± 1.27%) compared to “ant-tended” treatments (51.4% ± 4.13%). The low female-biased sex-ratio observed in the “ant-tended” treatment can be attributed to ants’ interference during the oviposition phase, which disrupted parasitoids’ ability …

Continuous coverage of vegetables with nets under different climate conditions in Benin and Kenya proved effective in protecting vegetable nurseries and main fields against key lepidopteran and dipteran pests. However, netting did not effectively protect the vegetables against small insects such as aphids and whiteflies, although a visual barrier could delay outbreaks. Hence, opening the nets during the day could be an alternative option to conserve the natural enemies for small insects. Moreover, the efficacy of the visual barrier may be complemented by a repellent compound impregnated in the net. The small-holder growers adopting the nets in Benin and Kenya …

Partners Diversification And Exposure Of African Countries To International Crises: The Case Of Kenya, Giscard Assoumou Ella Dec 2015

Partners Diversification And Exposure Of African Countries To International Crises: The Case Of Kenya, Giscard Assoumou Ella

International Journal of African Development

The objective of this paper is to characterize the exposure of Kenyan's income to international income, monetary and price shocks. The results suggest that the partners’ diversification permits them to resist to international shocks. In fact, Chinese conjuncture tends to be less exposed to OECD countries' income and inflation shocks. Also, income in this country more depends on domestic investment and household consumption, in comparison to the exposure to OECD country shocks. In this context, we observe that the exposure of Kenyan income to OECD shocks regresses when the dependence to Chinese conjuncture progresses.

Examining Human Capital Capacity’S Influence On Human Development And Poverty Reduction In Sub-Saharan Africa, Theodore J. Davis Jr. Dec 2015

Examining Human Capital Capacity’S Influence On Human Development And Poverty Reduction In Sub-Saharan Africa, Theodore J. Davis Jr.

International Journal of African Development

The aim of this paper is to examine and expand our focus on human capital capacity building as a foundation for poverty reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa. The data showed significant differences in the human capital capacity building characteristics as measured by demographic, education and gender equality characteristics. In analyzing select human capital capacity building markers, the findings suggest that the educational indicators were among the strongest in explaining the variation in human development in Sub-Saharan Africa. The findings showed that gender inequality was a serious inhibitor of human development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Overall, the Sub-Saharan nations with the lowest level …

Journal of Bioresource Management

Paclitaxel (Taxol®) is a highly praised anticancer drug, known for its efficiency in treating different cancers. It belongs to a class of compounds called taxanes that are derived from the plants of the genus Taxus. This drug is now FDA approved, but there was a time when the name Taxol was less known to the scientific world. Taxol, being a unique molecule in its structure, properties and mechanism of action, has undergone more than 30 years of trials, and faced a lot of hurdles to leave the bench of a laboratory and reach the shelves of a pharmacy. This review …

Initiating A Bystander Awareness Program At A State University, Kristine B. Sparks

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Crime in schools, colleges and universities is a troublesome social problem. It affects not only those involved in the criminal incident, but it also inhibits societal growth and stability. To address this issue, the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (SaVE Act) of 2013 requires that colleges participating in federal student aid programs must provide “primary prevention and awareness programs” for new students and employees, as well as ongoing crime prevention and awareness campaigns. Implementation was mandated to be started by October 1, 2014. Most prevention programs teach students how to avoid situations, abusive behaviors and potential attacks. This project initiates …

Transitional Care To Reduce 30-Day Heart Failure Readmissions Among The Long-Term Care Elderly Population, Shantha Franks Dec 2015

Transitional Care To Reduce 30-Day Heart Failure Readmissions Among The Long-Term Care Elderly Population, Shantha Franks

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Throughout the nation, there is an increased focus on reducing preventable hospital readmissions. This initiative started with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) (CMS, 2014), which sets forth certain provisions for Medicare spending. Hospitals with higher than usual readmission rates, especially in terms of preventable readmissions, are receiving reductions in Medicare reimbursements (Stone & Hoffman, 2010, CMS, 2014). Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) or Heart Failure (HF) is recognized as a primary cause of 30-day hospital readmissions. Causes of HF readmission include inadequate patient education and planning for discharge, inappropriate medication reconciliation, and poor or inadequate follow-up in the …

Ethnic Differences In Maternal Adipokines During Normal Pregnancy, Xinhua Chen, Theresa O Scholl Dec 2015

Ethnic Differences In Maternal Adipokines During Normal Pregnancy, Xinhua Chen, Theresa O Scholl

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Two adipokines (adiponectin and resistin) have opposite relations with insulin resistance and inflammation. Our major focus was to determine whether there were detectable ethnic differences in maternal adipokines during pregnancy. We also explored the correlation of the adipokines with maternal glucose homeostasis, blood pressure and anthropometric parameters. Pregnant women (n = 1634) were from a large prospective cohort study in Camden NJ (African-American 36.8%; Hispanic 47.6%; Caucasian 15.6%). Serum adiponectin and resistin were measured at entry (week 16.8) and the 3rd trimester (week 30.7) using the Luminex xMapTechnology. Significant differences were observed among ethnic groups, controlling for confounding variables. African …

Improving Patient Care Outcomes To Reduce Recurrent Admissions Of Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Lisa Maria Friedrich

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Purpose:Transitional care is time-limited, with the goal of ensuring safety and health continuity for at-risk patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as they move from one setting to the next. An acute care episode of COPD ranges from relatively healthy adults to adults with multiple chronic conditions or those in the end-of-life phase. The primary quality concern of an urgent need to improve health care is in response to the gaps of sufficient experience to manage patients with COPD, leading to hospital readmissions. Implementation of standards of care for the improvement of health-related quality of life (HRQL) of COPD …

When Free Is Not For Me: Confronting The Barriers To Use Of Free Quitline Telephone Counseling For Tobacco Dependence, Christine Sheffer, Sharon Brackman, Charnette Lercara, Naomi Cottoms, Mary Olson, Luana Panissidi, Jami Pittman, Helen Stayna

Publications and Research

Remarkable disparities in smoking rates in the United States contribute significantly to socioeconomic and minority health disparities. Access to treatment for tobacco use can help address these disparities, but quitlines, our most ubiquitous treatment resource, reach just 1%–2% of smokers. We used community-based participatory methods to develop a survey instrument to assess barriers to use of the quitline in the Arkansas Mississippi delta. Barriers were quitline specific and barriers to cessation more broadly. Over one-third (34.9%) of respondents (n = 799) did not have access to a telephone that they could use for the quitline. Respondents reported low levels of …

Architecture Of High-Affinity Unnatural-Base Dna Aptamers Toward Pharmaceutical Applications, Ken Ichiro Matsunaga, Michiko Kimoto, Charlotte Hanson, Michael Sanford, Howard A. Young, Ichiro Hirao

United States Public Health Resources

We present a remodeling method for high-affinity unnatural-base DNA aptamers to augment their thermal stability and nuclease resistance, for use as drug candidates targeting specific proteins. Introducing a unique mini-hairpin DNA provides robust stability to unnatural-base DNA aptamers generated by SELEX using genetic alphabet expansion, without reducing their high affinity. By this method, >80% of the remodeled DNA aptamer targeting interferon-γ (KD of 33 pM) survived in human serum at 37 °C after 3 days under our experimental conditions, and sustainably inhibited the biological activity of interferon-γ.

Filter Presence And Tipping Paper Color Influence Consumer Perceptions Of Cigarettes, Richard J. O’Connor, Maansi Bansal-Travers, K. Michael Cummings, David Hammond, Jim Thrasher, Cindy Tworek

Faculty Publications

Background: Cigarettes are marketed in a wide array of packaging and product configurations, and these may impact consumers’ perceptions of product health effects and attractiveness. Filtered cigarettes are typically perceived as less hazardous and white tipping paper (as opposed to cork) often conveys ‘lightness’.

Methods: This study examined cigarette-related perceptions among 1220 young adult (age 18-35) current, ever, and never smokers recruited from three eastern U.S. cities (Buffalo NY, Columbia SC, Morgantown WV). Participants rated three cigarette sticks: two filtered cigarettes 85 mm in length, differing only in tipping paper color (cork versus white), and an unfiltered 70 mm cigarette. …
