A Bayesian Analysis Of The Impact Of Hereditary Attributes On The Diagnosis Of Als Patients, Kathryn Dee Coleman
A Bayesian Analysis Of The Impact Of Hereditary Attributes On The Diagnosis Of Als Patients, Kathryn Dee Coleman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between hereditary attributes of patients that have been diagnosed with ALS and the change in their respective ALSFRS and/or ALSFRS-R scores over the length of a clinical trial in which they participated. These scores assess the patient's ability to perform everyday tasks, as well as describe the capability to breathe and eat. Data for each of the 8,600 patients was collected by a group called PRO-ACT, and was de-identified prior to access. Bayesian methods are used to estimate the mean of the posterior distributions of parameters in a simple linear …

Comparative Study Of The D-Values Of Salmonella Spp. And Enterococcus Faecium In Wheat Flour, Didier Dodier
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Low-moisture foods contaminated with Salmonella spp. have been implicated in several foodborne illness outbreaks in the United States. The food industry has to incorporate preventive control in their process and validate thermal processes to assure food safety. The thermal destruction of Enterococcus faecium ATTC 8459 and Salmonella spp. was determined at 3 water activity levels (0.11, 0.18 and 0.33) at 80ºC, 85ºC and 90ºC. Aerobic plates counts petrifilms were used as non-selective medium for both bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae petrifilms were used as selective medium for Salmonella spp., and peptone water modified with sodium azide as a selective medium for Enterococcus faecium …

Influences Of African American English On Cognitive Processing And Reading Comprehension For African American Adolescent Readers, Alma Renee Dawson
Influences Of African American English On Cognitive Processing And Reading Comprehension For African American Adolescent Readers, Alma Renee Dawson
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a virtual wave of studies investigating influences of African American English on academic achievement. Many of these studies have taken a sociolinguistic stance citing language stratification and low perception of the language as causes for the success and failures of these students. Others have suggested that the language used in family and community settings are not congruent with the academic language in school. In this study, I investigated the influences of African American English on reading achievement from a psycholinguistic perspective. This study analyzed the oral language, linguistics, and the cognitive processing behaviors of African American students …

The information gained through these studies will provide beneficial information to the pork industry on the impact of manure application method and …
Evaluation Of Genetic Gain For Dynamic Leaf Traits In Maize Using Field Spectroscopy, Jonathan Luetchens
Evaluation Of Genetic Gain For Dynamic Leaf Traits In Maize Using Field Spectroscopy, Jonathan Luetchens
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Rapid introduction of cheap and precise genotyping technology has created a void between genotypes and phenotypes in maize breeding. While detailed genetic information is easily accessible, the data are lacking robust phenotypes to be used in mapping studies like genome-wide association. As a result, high-throughput phenotyping tools are necessary to rigorously characterize specific traits. In this study, agronomic traits and an active spectrometer system were used to monitor 36 era hybrids – popular commercial maize hybrids grown from 1936 to 2012 – to discover how various traits have changed over time. In conjunction with increased grain yield of 76 kg/ha …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background: There is limited information about health care utilisation at the end of life for people in Australia. We describe acute hospital-based services utilisation during the last year of life for all adults (aged 18+ years) who died in a 12-month period in Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales (NSW). Methods: Linked administrative health data were analysed for all adults who died in NSW in 2007 (the most recent year for which cause of death information was available for linkage for this study). The data comprised linked death records (2007), hospital admissions and emergency department (ED) presentations (2006–2007) and …

Objective
To examine variations in the quality and cost of care provided to patients with diabetes mellitus by Community Health Centers (CHCs) compared to other primary care settings.
Research Design and Methods
We used data from the 2005–2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (N = 2,108). We used two dependent variables: quality of care and ambulatory care expenditures. Our primary independent variable was whether the respondent received care in a Community Health Centers (CHCs) or not. We estimated logistic regression models to determine the probability of quality of care, and used generalized linear models with log link and gamma distribution to …

High Throughput Screening Of Priming Candidates For Impact On Nonviral Gene Delivery, Albert L. Nguyen
High Throughput Screening Of Priming Candidates For Impact On Nonviral Gene Delivery, Albert L. Nguyen
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Priming, in the context of nonviral gene delivery, is the treatment of cells with a compound prior to gene transfer that enhances transfection efficiency and/or transgene expression. Essentially, it is the application of an adjuvant approach to gene delivery. Effective transfection strategies may require priming to compete with the efficiency of viral transduction in order to achieve clinically relevant efficiency and expression in vivo. To search for priming compounds, a high throughput screen of the NIH Clinical Collection was performed using 25kDa b-PEI, an EGFP/luciferase plasmid, and HEK293T cells. The EGFP reporter was multiplexed with Hoechst 33342 and Resazurin fluorescence …

Doctoral Dissertations
The extracellular environment plays an important and crucial role in orchestrating the behaviors of the cells in the central nervous system (CNS). In my thesis work, I studied how the extracellular environment regulates a subset of glial cells, Oligodendrocytes (OLs) and astrocytes. Moreover, I studied the relationship of the astrocyte and the OL, particularly for astrocytes to promote a favorable environment for OL maturation. The extracellular matric (ECM) is composed of a variety of factors, including glycoproteins and secreted extracellular proteins.
In my thesis work, I focused on a subset of glycoproteins: Laminin (Ln), Tenascin-C (TnC), Fibronectin (Fn), and Vitronectin …

Executive Summary: The Effects Of High Fidelity Simulation On Hesi Grades, Monica Taylor
DNP and Student Works
The nursing program at a community college in Texas had a steady decrease in National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN®) and Health Education Systems, Incorporated (HESI) scores for the past five years. After making several changes in the program, HESI scores continued to be low. In 2012, the school built a new state of the art high fidelity simulation lab. The faculty considered high fidelity simulation (HFS) as a possible solution to improve the scores. The purpose of this project was to examine whether the integration of HFS with traditional clinical learning experiences would increase the students' performance …

The Impoverished Island: Development Intervention In Madagascar, Taylor Eubanks
The Impoverished Island: Development Intervention In Madagascar, Taylor Eubanks
The Catalyst
Madagascar, an island nation in Africa, is mired in poverty; approximately 76.5% of its population lives below the national poverty line of less than $1 per day. Instances of extreme poverty cannot be explained by single dimension, clearly delineated, universally applicable causes and solutions; rather, extreme poverty must be analyzed as a multi-dimensional phenomenon created and perpetuated by conditions specific to individual societies and communities. To speak broadly of poverty and its causes fails to provide an accurate depiction of why a country is poor. The extreme impoverishment found in Madagascar is the result of cumulative conditions specific to the …

Case Report Posters
Glioblastoma is a malignant brain tumor, often found in the cerebellum. From 2005-2009 there were 109,605 incidences of malignant brain tumors reported in the united states. Specific incidence rates for malignant brain tumors ranged from 5.8 to 11.70 per 100,000 adults 20 years or older. Stage IV is the most rapidly growing and invasive glioblastoma and most common adult neoplasm usually affecting people in the 5th or 6th decade of life. Treatment of glioblastoma frequently involves surgery to excise the tumor followed by radiation therapy. Similar to the growing malignancy these treatments often cause further progressive and even rapid neurological …
