Neuromuscular Strengthening Exercises Following Acl And Meniscal Repair In A 15 Year Old Female Athlete With Generalized Knee Laxity: A Case Report, Alyssa Gardner

Case Report Papers

Background and Purpose: Adolescent females are 4-6 times more likely to sustain a non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury compared to their male counterparts. Generalized knee laxity decreases dynamic knee stability and further increases injury risk. In patients with a history of bilateral knee hyperextension who have sustained an ACL injury, it’s vital to recover function after surgery, as well as prevent injury in the contralateral knee. A lack of information exists that addresses simultaneous rehabilitation protocols. The purpose of this case report was to investigate the use of a neuromuscular strengthening program in both the ACL injured and un-injured …

The Importance Of Physicochemical Characteristics And Nonlinear Classifiers In Determining Hiv-1 Protease Specificity, Timmy Manning, Paul Walsh Dec 2015

The Importance Of Physicochemical Characteristics And Nonlinear Classifiers In Determining Hiv-1 Protease Specificity, Timmy Manning, Paul Walsh

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

This paper reviews recent research relating to the application of bioinformatics approaches to determining HIV-1 protease specificity, outlines outstanding issues, and presents a new approach to addressing these issues. Leading machine learning theory for the problem currently suggests that the direct encoding of the physicochemical properties of the amino acid substrates is not required for optimal performance. A number of amino acid encoding approaches which incorporate potentially relevant physicochemical properties of the substrate are identified, and are evaluated using a nonlinear task decomposition based neuroevolution algorithm. The results are evaluated, and compared against a recent benchmark set on a nonlinear …

Preoperative Smoking Cessation Intervention: A Critical Appraisal Of The Evidence With Practice Recommendations, Casta Townsley Dec 2015

Preoperative Smoking Cessation Intervention: A Critical Appraisal Of The Evidence With Practice Recommendations, Casta Townsley

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

Smoking is the single most important risk factor in the development of postoperative complications. Daily smoking increases the risk of postoperative complications by a factor of two to four. Smoking cessation preoperatively is beneficial in increasing rates of cessation and therefore reducing the incidence of complications postoperatively. As a result, smoking cessation should be recognized as a core element of care for the preoperative management of the surgical patient. Although the benefits of smoking cessation are well established, as is substantial evidence demonstrating that brief interventions are effective in increasing cessation rates among users, clinicians fail to consistently address the …

Recuerdos Que Curan. Memoria Y Ciencia Ficción En Chile, Kaitlin R. Sommerfeld, Juan C. Toledano

Alambique.

The Higher Education Authority recently reported an average drop-out rate of 16% for Irish third level students, which poses significant pedagogical and economic challenges across the educational sector and negatively impacts the Irish economy. With respect to tackling this issue, a considerable body of international research has identified a strong positive correlation between higher levels of emotional intelligence (EI) and increased levels of student engagement and academic attainment. A wealth of previous research has also shown that employers favour graduates who possess higher levels of EI, for example, Job Outlook Survey, 2008, therefore, increasing students’ levels of EI is also …

A Fiscal Model Program Theory Proposal For Training Reentry Citizen Ex-Convicts To Remodel Abandoned Houses, James A. Hanson Dec 2015

A Fiscal Model Program Theory Proposal For Training Reentry Citizen Ex-Convicts To Remodel Abandoned Houses, James A. Hanson

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to develop and examine a fiscal program theory model and proposal for training reentry citizen ex-convicts to remodel abandoned houses. A sustainable program theory model describes ways that training and employing these citizens to remodel abandoned houses may be expected to have benefits to a community. The recently released ex-convicts will learn a construction trade, earn a sustainable wage, and the once-abandoned houses will be returned to the city tax rolls. Vocational education and workforce training are key to this program. The literature indicates that national jobless rates for recently released inmates is well …

Pthrp(12-48) A New Player In Breast Cancer Bone Metastasis, Charity Leah Washam Dec 2015

Pthrp(12-48) A New Player In Breast Cancer Bone Metastasis, Charity Leah Washam

Theses and Dissertations

Bone metastasis is a common complication of breast cancer that significantly compromises patient survival due, in part, to the advanced stage of disease at time of detection. Early detection is key to patient survival, however, despite intense investigation in both the metastatic and early breast cancer setting there are currently no high performance biomarkers that can identify or predict the development of bone metastasis. In order to improve patient outcomes new diagnostic tools that can detect skeletal lesions in their earliest stages of development and/or identify patients at risk for developing bone metastases that may benefit from adjuvant anti-resorptive treatment …

There Goes The Neighborhood: The Effects Of Residency Restrictions On Sex Offenders And The Community, Linde Christine Rush Burkey Dec 2015

There Goes The Neighborhood: The Effects Of Residency Restrictions On Sex Offenders And The Community, Linde Christine Rush Burkey

Theses and Dissertations

Sex offender laws and regulations were enacted with the goal of preventing and reducing sex crimes, however, some scholars have argued sex offender laws may actually contribute to an increase in recidivism as a result of a number of unintended consequences. While there have been numerous studies examining the unintended consequences associated with residency restrictions, no research to date has examined the location of sex offender clusters and how these clusters affect the community and sex crimes within their geographical vicinities. While some researchers have established that the clustering of registered sex offenders occurs in certain geographical areas, further analysis …

Construction Of Class I Hla-Binding Peptidome, Heng Luo Dec 2015

Construction Of Class I Hla-Binding Peptidome, Heng Luo

Theses and Dissertations

The human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) can capture endogenous or exogenous peptides and set up a cascade which results in immune activation to fight a pathogen or sometimes to trigger autoimmune diseases or adverse drug reactions. Understanding HLA-peptide binding is essential for the development of vaccines and protein therapies, the identification of methods to prevent autoimmune diseases and the prediction of adverse drug reactions. Using an in silico approach we generated a 9-mer peptidome for Class I HLAs from the human proteome and harvested experimental HLA-peptide binding data from a variety of databases. Unfortunately, many peptides in the peptidome do not …

Applications Of Structure Based Drug Design To Generate High Affinity Anti-Methamphetamine Immunotherapy And To Identify Novel Inhibitors Of Lox-1 To Treat Atherosclerosis, Shraddha Thakkar

Theses and Dissertations

Computer-aided rational drug design is one of the most promising approaches for the development of effective drug therapies. This dissertation describes applications of rational structure-based techniques in two cases. In the first study, we enhanced the potency of a therapeutic antibody against methamphetamine. In the second study we identified potentially therapeutic molecules to treat atherosclerosis. Methamphetamine abuse is a serious health hazard and a single chain variable fragment (scFv) of a therapeutic anti-METH antibody has been developed at this University. Anti-METH immunotherapy blocks or reduces the rate of METH entry into the brain. In this research we introduced rationally designed …

Measuring Resting Energy Requirements For Pediatric Oncology Patients With The Medgem, Lauren C. Flowers Dec 2015

Measuring Resting Energy Requirements For Pediatric Oncology Patients With The Medgem, Lauren C. Flowers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Pediatric oncology patients are at an increased risk for malnutrition related to their diagnosis and corresponding treatment. It is essential that accurate and reliable methods of measuring energy needs are used throughout treatment to avoid increased risk of morbidity and mortality. The primary objective of the study is to determine if the energy expenditure obtained by a standard energy equation and by the MedGem® accurately predicts needs in pediatric oncology patients as compared to the gold standard indirect calorimeter. The three measurements were tested on the same day for patients aged 7-17 years. The data was analyzed using a one …
