A Comparison Of Water Conservation Methods Within The Supply Chain, Spencer Bryant
A Comparison Of Water Conservation Methods Within The Supply Chain, Spencer Bryant
Honors Projects
In a world where resources are becoming more and scarcer, water is one resource that companies need in order to stay functional. This purpose of this paper is to look at a variety of business sectors and see how they use water conservational methods within their supply chain in order to save on water. From the sectors observed, there were three main areas of focus in terms of water sustainability: reduce, reuse, and replenish. While the companies looked at were in two of the three areas stated, no company had water sustainability initiatives in place in all three areas. This …

Community parks have achieved recognition as a public health intervention to promote physical activity. This study evaluated changes in population-level physical activity when an undeveloped green space adjacent to transitional housing for refugees was transformed into a recreational park. A prospective, nonrandomized study design used the System of Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (SOPARC) to document the number and activity levels of park users over time, and to compare trends pre- and post-construction. T-tests or tests of medians (when appropriate) were used to compare pre- and post- construction changes in use of non-park and park zones for physical activity …

Patients with hormone-resistant prostate cancer (PCa) have higher biochemical failure rates following radiation therapy (RT). Cyclin D1 deregulated expression in PCa is associated with a more aggressive disease: however its role in radioresistance has not been determined. Cyclin D1 levels in the androgen-independent PC3 and 22Rv1 PCa cells were stably inhibited by infecting with cyclin D1-shRNA. Tumorigenicity and radiosensitivity were investigated using in vitro and in vivo experimental assays. Cyclin D1 silencing interfered with PCa oncogenic phenotype by inducing growth arrest in the G1 phase of cell cycle and reducing soft agar colony formation, migration, invasion in vitro and tumor …

Renal Replacement Therapy In Patients With Left Ventricular Assist Device: What Do The Cardiologists Need To Know?, Hesham R. Omar
The VAD Journal
Renal failure after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation occurs either due to worsening chronic kidney disease which is common in end-stage heart failure, or due to acute kidney injury in the peri-implantation period, and is associated with high morbidity and short-term mortality. The increased utilization of LVAD in refractory heart failure either as a bridge to transplantation or destination therapy will eventually create a population of patients with LVADs who are dialysis-dependent. There are multiple challenges encountered during dialysis of patients with LVADs including the unfamiliarity of nephrologists with the LVAD technology, difficulty in hemodynamic monitoring with continuous flow …

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies
There is no doubt that global warming is happening. With all the rage about climate change and global warming people should be doing more about it than just reading about it in the news. We should be making efforts towards making changes on a local level. This in turn could grow to a national level with more and more people participating in the movement and actually make global changes, instead of just talking about it. When the scale of participants grows the scale of the changes made will grow as well and this will be the beginning of the changes …

Background: Variations in physical activity (PA) across nations may be driven by socioeconomic position. As national incomes increase, car ownership becomes within reach of more individuals. This report characterizes associations between car ownership and PA in African-origin populations across 5 sites at different levels of economic development and with different transportation infrastructures: US, Seychelles, Jamaica, South Africa, and Ghana. Methods: Twenty-five hundred adults, ages 25-45, were enrolled in the study. A total of 2,101 subjects had valid accelerometer-based PA measures (reported as average daily duration of moderate to vigorous PA, MVPA) and complete socioeconomic information. Our primary exposure of interest …

Security of authentication protocols heavily relies on the confidentiality of credentials (or authenticators) like passwords and session IDs. However, unlike browser-based web applications for which highly evolved browsers manage the authenticators, Android apps have to construct their own management. We find that most apps simply locate their authenticators into the persistent storage and entrust underlying Android OS for mediation. Consequently, these authenticators can be leaked through compromised backup channels. In this work, we conduct the first systematic investigation on this previously overlooked attack vector. We find that nearly all backup apps on Google Play inadvertently expose backup data to any …
Improving Management Of Inpatient Blood Glucose, Rachael K. Misitano
Improving Management Of Inpatient Blood Glucose, Rachael K. Misitano
Master's Projects and Capstones
Epidemiologic studies indicate blood glucose management in the hospitalized patient population is not adequate; with approximately 30% of patients reporting values >180mg/dl. Patients with increased blood glucose levels pose a higher mortality risk as well as increased risks for dehydration, hypotension, renal injury, decreased wound healing, immunosuppression, and an overall increase in hospital length of stay (AACE, 2015). This project aims to improve inpatient management of blood glucose levels by facilitating MD-RN communication through a reduction in the current reportable blood glucose level. This project took place on a 17 bed adult medical-surgical unit at a large academic hospital in …
Cargo Cycles For Local And Last Mile Delivery: Lessons From New York City, Alison Conway
Cargo Cycles For Local And Last Mile Delivery: Lessons From New York City, Alison Conway
PSU Transportation Seminars
Cities depend on safe and efficient goods movement to support community livability and a healthy economy. However, delivery of goods in an urban environment presents a tremendous challenge. Traditional motorized vehicles used for goods movement – ranging from cargo vans to box trucks - are inherently incompatible with (1) the multimodal street environments of modern cities, with clean, quiet conditions preferred by residents, and (2) larger environmental sustainability goals. As freight flows continue to grow with the demands of global trade, new urban freight and city logistics solutions are needed.
Cargo cycles – human powered cycles equipped with freight carrying …

Naphthenic acids (NAs) are among the most toxic organic pollutants present in oil sands process waters (OSPW) and enter marine and freshwater environments through natural and anthropogenic sources. We investigated the effects of the acid extractable organic (AEO) fraction of OSPW and individual surrogate NAs, on maximum photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) (FV/FM) and cell growth in Emiliania huxleyi and Chlorella vulgaris as representative marine and freshwater phytoplankton. Whilst FV/FM in E. huxleyi and C. vulgaris was not inhibited by AEO, exposure to two surrogate NAs: (4'-n-butylphenyl)-4-butanoic acid (n-BPBA) and (4'-tert-butylphenyl)-4-butanoic acid (tert-BPBA), caused complete inhibition of FV/FM in …
The Effect Of Sleep Deprivation On Cadet Performance And Behavior: A Proposal To Reform The Rotc Program At James Madison University, Josh Wells
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
This paper addresses the problem of sleep deprivation among cadets in the Army ROTC program at James Madison University. Drawing on existing research and Army doctrine, the author examines the necessity of sleep for decision making, the biological consequences of sleep deprivation, and the effects of sleep deprivation on emotional intelligence. The paper also questions large, early-morning Physical Training (PT) sessions and their effectiveness in developing group cohesion. After comparing the research to the practices of the ROTC program, the author proposes a new training method for ROTC cadets to address the problems of sleep deprivation and large group PT.
