Metabotropic Receptor Modulation Of Kainate Receptors In The Hippocampus, C'Iana Patrice Cooper Dec 2015

Metabotropic Receptor Modulation Of Kainate Receptors In The Hippocampus, C'Iana Patrice Cooper

Theses and Dissertations

Kainate receptors (KARs) are glutamate-gated ion channels that mediate synaptic transmission, modulate transmitter release, and mediate excitation in the brain. Potentiation in their function predisposes the hippocampus to hyperexcitability and seizures. These receptors are widely expressed throughout the central nervous system as tetramers composed of various combinations of GluK1-5 subunits. In the hippocampus (a brain region commonly associated with seizure initiation), GluK2-, GluK4-, and GluK5-containing receptors are highly expressed in the CA3 pyramidal cell layer, whereas GluK1 is barely detectable. The lack of pharmacological tools hinders identifying the functional contribution of each kainate receptor subtype in normal CA3 synaptic transmission. …

General Strain Theory And Bullying Victimization: Do Parental Support And Control Alleviate The Negative Effects Of Bullying, Jonathon Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

With growing reports of bullying victimization ranging from 8 percent to 46 percent in many countries, bullying victimization has been declared an international problem often affecting youth in or near one’s school with poor parental supervision. While there has been a growing body of research concerning bullying victimization, few studies have examined the collateral consequences of bullying victimization and the mediating role of family processes through the theoretical lens of general strain theory. This thesis attempts to shed light on such a complex social phenomena and contribute to the bullying and stress literature. This study posits that bullying victimization is …

Impact Of Formulation And Processing Parameters On Mechanical Properties Of Magadiite/Elastomer Composites, Yating Mao

Theses and Dissertations

This work seeks a better understanding of mechanical reinforcement and energy dissipation in elastomer composites containing the layered silicate magadiite (MGD, Na2Si14O29·nH2O). We characterized the elastomer’s accessibility into MGD interlayer spaces and studied the factors that influence the composite mechanical properties. We also compare the mechanical reinforcement of MGD with montmorillonite (MMT, a layered aluminosilicate clay mineral), which is widely used as filler in other kinds of nanocomposites. The study explores the grafting chemistry, vulcanization, and reinforcement mechanism in MGD/elastomer composites, which may help us to formulate the platelet/elastomer composites with superior mechanical properties and performance in the future. We …

Situationism And The Promise Of Virtue Ethics, Richard Barclay Holmes Dec 2015

Situationism And The Promise Of Virtue Ethics, Richard Barclay Holmes

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I argue that it is possible to develop an empirically adequate form of virtue ethics even if one grants that situationism is true. I define situationism as a skeptical thesis about globalism, or the thesis that temporally stable and trans-situationally consistent character and personality traits are widely instantiated. Situationists such as John Doris and Gilbert Harman argue that globalism is an empirically inadequate thesis. While I accept Doris and Harman’s situationist thesis, they also make a further argument which is the subject of this dissertation. They argue that since globalism is empirically inadequate and Aristotelian virtue ethics …

Survival: A Teach For America Memoir, Christopher Neal Schumerth Dec 2015

Survival: A Teach For America Memoir, Christopher Neal Schumerth

Theses and Dissertations

“I grab Franklin and pull him upright, standing in between him and the smaller student. I spread my arms in each direction. That second of new life gives the smaller student renewed vigor. His fists shoot around and even into me. Franklin, whose punches actually hurt, gladly obliges in kind. Suddenly, I am the main, albeit incidental, object of both children’s rage. A sharp, stabbing pencil glances off my wrist, drawing blood. I look at the two cafeteria workers, dressed in white and protected by a shield of glass and the food they are distributing. They look the other way.” …

Global Methylation Of Dna Among Spartina Alterniflora Clones Differing In Age At North Inlet, Sc, Trenton Agrelius Dec 2015

Global Methylation Of Dna Among Spartina Alterniflora Clones Differing In Age At North Inlet, Sc, Trenton Agrelius

Theses and Dissertations

“Brown marsh” or “sudden marsh dieback” refers to the rapid death of patches varying in size of Spartina alterniflora. In 2000 following a 100-year record drought, approximately 8,000 hectares of S. alterniflora died along the Louisiana coast, which prompted Louisiana Governor Foster to declare a state of emergency. Other cases have been documented at North Inlet, SC as well as various other marshes along the southeastern United States. Currently, there is much dispute regarding the cause of “sudden marsh dieback” but environmental stress is one of the acknowledged constants across sites. We hypothesized an alternative mechanism in which methylation of …

Student Nurse Behaviors And Barriers To Successful Completion Of The Traditonal Bachelor's In Science Of Nursing (Bsn) Program., Carri Shaw

Honors Theses

Change is often said to be the only constant in life. This holds true to the rapidly growing field of nursing. In order to meet the demands of new challenges that emerge in nursing, the way future nurses are educated also has changed. Not all nursing students find that the profession is for them. Therefore, some attrition from school is expected. This descriptive study will explore factors that the literature suggests are related to attrition at a mid-sized public university in the Midwest. A survey given to two different level nursing cohorts will give insight to pre-licensure nursing students’ experiences …

Predicting Volunteer Motives Among University Faculty And Staff: A Functional Approach, Richard J. Harnish, K. Robert Bridges Dec 2015

Predicting Volunteer Motives Among University Faculty And Staff: A Functional Approach, Richard J. Harnish, K. Robert Bridges

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

Anchor institutions tend to be non-profit organizations that are spatially immobile and are an economic engine for their communities. Because of pressures on institutions of higher education to generate new revenue, it may be more difficult for such institutions to meet the criteria or maintain their status as an anchor institution. In this article, we argue that volunteerism may be one means to strengthen partnerships in the community thereby assisting the university or college in their attempts to meet the criteria or maintain their status as an anchor institution. Volunteerism is an other-oriented prosocial behavior in which one’s self is …

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this study was to draw initial conclusions regarding the relationships between expressive movement, consciousness, and human needs. Additionally, this study also aimed to illustrate how the process of shifting conscious awareness through expressive movement enables clients of DMT to identify and meet their needs. Data was collected using a heuristic examination of my own experience, as the only participant of this study, engaging in six Authentic Movement sessions over six weeks. Data analysis, using a heuristic methodology, resulted in several conclusions which piece together an initial framework from which to understand how the process of shifting conscious …

Master's Projects and Capstones

Abstract:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the organizations that serves refugees and asylums arriving into the United States. Each year between 4 to 500 individuals will resettle in Oakland through the IRC. However, after relocation, these individuals need information about life in the new country , community resources , and social services especially health care system in the country. Life pressures during the resettlement process, along with the language barrier and poverty usually lead to a less healthy diets and lifestyles. During the time, these factors will put refugees at the risk of obesity and later, chronic …
