Effect Of Four Approaches To Oral Feeding Progression On Clinical Outcomes In Preterm Infants, Rita H. Pickler, Barbara A. Reyna, Paul A. Wetzel, Mary Lewis

Biomedical Engineering Publications

Background. The purpose of this study of preterm infants was to test the effect of four approaches to the time of transition from gavage to full oral feedings, time to discharge, and weight gain during the transition.Methods. A randomized experimental design was used with four intervention groups: early start (32 weeks' postmenstrual age)/slow progressing experience (gradually increasing oral feedings offered per day); early start/maximum experience (oral feedings offered at every feeding opportunity); late start (34 weeks' postmenstrual age)/slow progressing experience; and late start/maximum experience. Results. The analysis included 86 preterm infants. Once oral feedings were initiated, …

Suicide Risk In Nursing Homes And Assisted Living Facilities: 2003–2011, Brianna Mezuk, Matthew Lohman, Marc Leslie, Virginia Powell Jan 2015

Suicide Risk In Nursing Homes And Assisted Living Facilities: 2003–2011, Brianna Mezuk, Matthew Lohman, Marc Leslie, Virginia Powell

Family Medicine and Population Health Publications

Objectives

We investigated the epidemiology of suicide among adults aged 50 years and older in nursing homes and assisted living facilities and whether anticipating transitioning into long-term care (LTC) is a risk factor for suicide.

Methods

Data come from the Virginia Violent Death Reporting System (2003–2011). We matched locations of suicides (n = 3453) against publicly available resource registries of nursing homes (n = 285) and assisted living facilities (n = 548). We examined individual and organizational correlates of suicide by logistic regression. We identified decedents anticipating entry into LTC through qualitative text analysis.

Results

Incidence of suicide was 14.16 …

Rising Food Insecurity And Conservative Policy In The Us: Impact On The Elderly, Peter S. Arno, Kenneth Knapp, Stephan Russo, Deborah Viola Jan 2015

Rising Food Insecurity And Conservative Policy In The Us: Impact On The Elderly, Peter S. Arno, Kenneth Knapp, Stephan Russo, Deborah Viola

NYMC Faculty Publications

Food insecurity, a critical problem in the developing world, has recently received increased attention among wealthy nations. Food insecurity, broadly defined, is when a lack of resources prevents household members from having enough food. In the US, food insecurity has been rising while social safety net programs to ameliorate hunger among at-risk households have been targeted for cuts by conservatives. Our main objective was to assess the prevalence and impact of food insecurity among the elderly. In a survey of 500 older, homebound meal clients in New York City, we found that nearly one in five (17%) is food insecure, …

Religious Coping Moderates The Relation Between Racism And Psychological Well-Being Among Christian Asian American College Students., Paul Youngbin Kim, Dana L. Kendall, Marcia Webb

SPU Works

We examined the moderating role of positive and negative religious coping in the relation between racism and psychological well-being in a sample of Catholic and Protestant Asian American college students (N = 107). Based on prior theorizing on the two types of religious coping, combined with some limited empirical evidence, we predicted that positive religious coping would have a buffering effect (Hypothesis 1) on the racism-mental health relation and that negative religious coping would have an exacerbating one (Hypothesis 2). Participants completed an online survey containing measures corresponding to the study variables. Results indicated that the interaction between positive …

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Derived From Acute Myeloid Leukemia Bone Marrow Exhibit Aberrant Cytogenetics And Cytokine Elaboration, J C. Huang, S K. Basu, X Zhao, S Chien, M Fang, V G. Oehler, F R. Appelbaum, P S. Becker

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) play a fundamental role in the BM microenvironment (BME) and abnormalities of these cells may contribute to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) pathogenesis. The aim of the study was to characterize the cytokine and gene expression profile, immunophenotype and cytogenetics of BM-MSCs from AML patients compared to normal BM-MSCs from healthy donors. AML BM-MSCs showed decreased monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 levels compared to normal BM-MSCs. AML BM-MSCs expressed similar β1 integrin, CD44, CD73, CD90 and E-cadherin compared to normal BM-MSCs. Cytogenetic analysis revealed chromosomal aberrations in AML BM-MSCs, some overlapping with and others distinct from their …

Comorbid Profile Rather Than Age Determines Hip Fracture Mortality In A Nonagenarian Population, A. Graver, S. Merwin, L. Collins, N. Kohn, A. Goldman Jan 2015

Comorbid Profile Rather Than Age Determines Hip Fracture Mortality In A Nonagenarian Population, A. Graver, S. Merwin, L. Collins, N. Kohn, A. Goldman

Journal Articles

BACKGROUND: In light of poor outcomes with nonoperative management of hip fractures, orthopedic surgeons are faced with difficult decisions about which patients are too ill or too old for surgical treatment. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: This study sought to investigate if patients over 90 years had different preoperative laboratory, clinical, and injury characteristics than younger patients with the same injury. We compared our cohort with previously published data. We wished to identify if there were pre-injury risk factors associated with 30-day mortality, which could be modified to enhance postoperative outcomes. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of 198 operatively managed hip fractures in …

B Cells In The Aging Immune System: Time To Consider B-1 Cells, N. E. Holodick, T. L. Rothstein Jan 2015

B Cells In The Aging Immune System: Time To Consider B-1 Cells, N. E. Holodick, T. L. Rothstein

Journal Articles

The investigation of immune senescence has uncovered many changes in B cell development, maintenance, and function with increasing age. However, most of these studies have focused on conventional B cell subsets in the spleen. The B-1 cell subset is an essential arm of the innate immune system, which in general has been understudied in terms of immune senescence. Here, we review what is currently known about B cells during aging and go on to describe why B-1 cell biology is an important component of the aging immune system in the context of diseases that most affect the aged population.

We Make Ourselves Real By Telling The Truth: Merton And Aging, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2015

We Make Ourselves Real By Telling The Truth: Merton And Aging, Glenn J. Morrison

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

In No Man is an Island, Thomas Merton asserts that, “We make ourselves real by telling the truth”. Where such transcendent truth uncovers the reality of the self, there is something about the “telling” of a narrative that gives life to the psyche in both the body and soul together. When the process of ageing anchors itself in a formative journey of reminiscence and storytelling, it seeks to be grounded in the reality of spirituality, the very desire to become real. Reality then takes on a transcendent perspective in terms of awakening (to the risen Christ’s narrative of truth, love, …

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease And Alzheimer’S Disease: Does Overlap Of Mechanism Mean Overlap Of Treatment Methods?, David Rotblat Jan 2015

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease And Alzheimer’S Disease: Does Overlap Of Mechanism Mean Overlap Of Treatment Methods?, David Rotblat

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. More than 5.5 million People over the age of 65 are currently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease with predictions of 13.8 million to be diagnosed by the year 2050 (Sultana, et al., 2013) (Hebert, Weuve, Scherr, & Evans, 2013). With few treatments available, scientists are desperately looking for a solution to this growing epidemic. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is also a neurodegenerative disorder, but with a far less prevalence of only 4.6 persons per million per year. It was discovered that Alzheimer’s and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease …

How Do Incremental Wage Increases Affect Low-Wage Workers’ Health Levels?, Cory Stern Jan 2015

How Do Incremental Wage Increases Affect Low-Wage Workers’ Health Levels?, Cory Stern

Award Winning Economics Papers

This paper estimates the demand for health among low-wage American workers. I incorporate theoretical assumptions and empirical findings from the fields of food and health economics to derive a utility-maximization framework, which posits health is a normal good. Using data from the Panel Study on Income Dynamics, I then regress an ordered probit random effects model to isolate the effect of income fluctuations on health over time. These results are statistically significant and robust to numerous specification checks, suggesting low-wage workers experience improved health levels as their wages increase. These findings deserve further inquiry to better-inform the current public debate …
