Insights Into Alzheimer’S Disease: The Levels Of Signaling Proteins In Brain Of Control Subjects Versus Brain From Subjects With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Georgianne F. Tiu

Kaleidoscope

The purpose of this study was to measure the expression levels of key signaling proteins in brain tissue from subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) compared to control subjects. MCI is considered to be the beginning phase of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), nuclear factor kappa beta (NF-κβ), phospho Bad (pBad), and ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase-L1 (UCH-L1) are four of the proteins that were investigated. Trends of either decreases or increases in protein expression levels in MCI vs. control brain were investigated. Western blot analysis was used in order to identify these trends. These signaling protein levels are …

The Influence Of Attentional Control On Hemispheric Processing Of Predictive Inferences, Michael Christopher Shutzenhofer Aug 2015

The Influence Of Attentional Control On Hemispheric Processing Of Predictive Inferences, Michael Christopher Shutzenhofer

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the effects of attentional control on the hemispheric processing of predictive inferences during reading. Participants read texts that were either strongly or weakly constrained towards a predictive inference and performed a lexical decision task to inference-related target words presented to the right or left visual field— hemisphere. Facilitation for strongly constrained predictive inferences was greater than facilitation for weakly constrained predictive inferences in both hemispheres. Readers with high attentional control showed significant facilitation for strongly constrained inferences in the both hemispheres, but only showed significant facilitation for weakly constrained inferences in the left hemisphere. Readers with low …

Role Of Fanca In Dna Damage Repair, Anaid Benitez Aug 2015

Role Of Fanca In Dna Damage Repair, Anaid Benitez

Open Access Dissertations

Fanconi anemia (FA) is a severe genetic disorder characterized by bone marrow failure, developmental defects, chromosomal instability, and predisposition to cancer. FA cells are hypersensitive to DNA crosslinking compounds including mitomycin C (MMC), cisplatin, and diepoxybutane, which make defective interstrand crosslink (ICL) repair mechanisms a hallmark for the disease. Of the 17 genes associated with FA, mutations in the complementation group A (FANCA) account for ~64% of all patient cases. Studies explored in this dissertation comprise the biochemical details for the functional role of FANCA in DNA ICL repair and the first biochemical evidence for its possible role in double-strand …

Ethical Documentation At The End Of Life, James T. Pathoulas Aug 2015

Ethical Documentation At The End Of Life, James T. Pathoulas

Lindmark Fellowship in Ethics

Patient autonomy is a basic tenet of ethical decision making in medicine. Individuals who are unable to participate in decision making at the end of life present a unique challenge to delivering ethical patient-centered care. To ensure patient autonomy is upheld, providers are encouraged to use healthcare directives to guide clinical decision-making. Healthcare directives are designed to uphold patient autonomy by indicating the desired scope of care at the end of life. While a particular type of healthcare directive, the advance care directive, is widely accepted, there are two common issues concerning its use: interpretation and accessibility. Issues with advance …

Tradeoffs Of Warm Adaptation In Aquatic Ectotherms: Live Fast, Die Young?, A. P. Porreca, E. Martinez, R. E. Colombo, Michael A. Menze Aug 2015

Tradeoffs Of Warm Adaptation In Aquatic Ectotherms: Live Fast, Die Young?, A. P. Porreca, E. Martinez, R. E. Colombo, Michael A. Menze

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

In the face of a changing climate, questions regarding sub-lethal effects of elevated habitat temperature on the physiology of ectotherms remain unanswered. In particular, long-term responses of ectotherms to the warming trend in tropical regions are unknown and significantly understudied due primarily to the difficulties in specimen and community traceability. In freshwater lakes employed as cooling reservoirs for power plants, increased physiological stress from high water temperature can lead to an increase in mortality, reduce growth, and potentially alter the community structure of fishes. Throughout this study, we employ this highly tractable system to assess how elevated thermal regimes can …

Effects Of Age, Sex, And Body Position On Orofacial Muscle Tone In Healthy Adults, Angela M. Dietsch, Heather M. Clark, Jessica N. Steiner, Nancy Pearl Solomon

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Purpose: Quantification of tissue stiffness may facilitate identification of abnormalities in orofacial muscle tone and thus contribute to differential diagnosis of dysarthria. Tissue stiffness is affected by muscle tone as well as age-related changes in muscle and connective tissue.

Method: The Myoton-3 measured tissue stiffness in 40 healthy adults, including equal numbers of men and women in each of two age groups: 18–40 years and 60+ years. Data were collected from relaxed muscles at the masseter, cheek, and lateral tongue surfaces in two positions: reclined on the side and seated with head tilted.

Results: Tissue stiffness differed …

Co-Construction Of Personal Narratives In Supporting Identity And Communication In Adults With Aphasia: The ‘My Story’ Project, Katie A. Strong

Dissertations

Stroke and subsequent aphasia can impact a person’s identity negatively, interfering with quality of life. Co-constructing personal narratives about stroke and other aspects of a person’s life is a promising intervention for addressing identity issues. This series of three dissertation studies explored key aspects related to identity, personal narratives, and the perceived impact of telling one’s story.

Study 1 involved a survey examining whether speech-language pathologists view themselves as having a role in supporting the reconstruction of self-identity in adults with aphasia through the use of personal narratives. Results revealed that, whereas the majority of respondents viewed themselves as having …

A Call-To-Action From The Feedm.E. Middle East Study Group: Use Of A Screen-Intervene-Supervene Strategy To Address Malnutrition In Healthcare, Osama Al-Zeer, Tahsin G. Ozcagli, Mehmet Uyar

Saudi Medical Journal

Up to 50% of hospitalized patients worldwide are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. Guidelines recommend nutritional screening of all patients on hospital admission. Results from studies of hospitalized patients show that screening, with follow-up nutritional assessment and care when indicated, can improve patients’ clinical outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. Despite compelling evidence, attention to nutritional care remains suboptimal in clinical settings worldwide. The feedM.E. Global Study Group developed a simple, stepwise Nutrition Care Pathway to facilitate best-practice nutrition care. This pathway guides clinicians to screen patients’ nutritional status on hospital admission or at initiation of care; intervene promptly with …

Sex Differences In Arm Muscle Fatigability With Cognitive Demand In Older Adults, Hugo M. Pereira, Vincent C. Spears, Bonnie Schlinder-Delap, Tejin Yoon, April L. Harkins, Kristy A. Nielson, Marie K. Hoeger Bement, Sandra K. Hunter Aug 2015

Sex Differences In Arm Muscle Fatigability With Cognitive Demand In Older Adults, Hugo M. Pereira, Vincent C. Spears, Bonnie Schlinder-Delap, Tejin Yoon, April L. Harkins, Kristy A. Nielson, Marie K. Hoeger Bement, Sandra K. Hunter

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Muscle fatigability can increase when a stressful, cognitively demanding task is imposed during a low-force fatiguing contraction with the arm muscles, especially in women. Whether this occurs among older adults (> 60 years) is currently unknown.

Questions/purposes

We aimed to determine if higher cognitive demands, stratified by sex, increased fatigability in older adults (> 60 years). Secondarily, we assessed if varying cognitive demand resulted in decreased steadiness and was explained by anxiety or cortisol levels.

Methods

Seventeen older women (70 ± 6 years) and 13 older men (71 ± 5 years) performed a sustained, isometric, fatiguing contraction at 20% …

Physiological Performance Of Warm-Adapted Marine Ectotherms : Thermal Limits Of Mitochondrial Energy Transduction Efficiency., Eloy Martinez, Eric Hendricks, Michael Menze, Joseph Torres Aug 2015

Physiological Performance Of Warm-Adapted Marine Ectotherms : Thermal Limits Of Mitochondrial Energy Transduction Efficiency., Eloy Martinez, Eric Hendricks, Michael Menze, Joseph Torres

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Thermal regimes in aquatic systems have profound implications for the physiology of ectotherms. In particular, the effect of elevated temperatures on mitochondrial energy transduction (i.e. energy from carbon substrates to ATP) in tropical and subtropical teleosts may have profound consequences on organismal performance and population viability. Upper and lower whole-organism critical temperatures for teleosts suggest that subtropical and tropical species are not susceptible to the warming trends associated with climate change, but sub-lethal effects on energy transduction efficiency and population dynamics remain unclear. The goal of the present study was to compare the thermal sensitivity of processes associated with mitochondrial …

Factors That Relate To Job Satisfaction Among Nurse Aides In Long-Term Care Facilities, Mary Donna House R.N., Ph.D. Jul 2015

Factors That Relate To Job Satisfaction Among Nurse Aides In Long-Term Care Facilities, Mary Donna House R.N., Ph.D.

Journal of Health Occupations Education

A quantitative-descriptive study was conducted to determine the relationship between selected work related factors and their impact on job satisfaction/dissatisfaction, and the high turnover rates of nurse assistants in long-term care facilities. Herzberg’s Motivation/Hygiene Theory was used as the theoretical model. The sample consisted of 152 nurse aides employed in 10 randomly selected nursing homes in Denver, Colorado. Data were analyzed by frequency counts, chi-square distributions, and multiple regression analysis. Findings indicated that selected demographic data and method of training were more significant than data regarding length of employment or the number of nursing homes worked in as a nurse …

Educational Competencies For Health Occupations Educators, Dorothy M. Witmer Ed.D., R.N. Jul 2015

Educational Competencies For Health Occupations Educators, Dorothy M. Witmer Ed.D., R.N.

Journal of Health Occupations Education

Health occupations teachers are facing many challenges which necessitate development of new competencies if their students are to be prepared for a changing health care delivery system. A study was conducted in Nebraska during 1987-88 with a two-fold purpose: (a) to identify the competencies needed by health occupations teachers as they perceived them, and (b) to compare these results with a study of health occupations teachers conducted seven years earlier. Respondents identified utilizing microcomputers in teaching as a top priority. A review of literature indicated that instruments being used to identify educational needs of health occupations teachers contain competencies that …
