Financial assistance is necessary for sustaining research at universities. Business collaborations are a potential means for obtaining these funds. To secure funding, understanding the process for obtaining these business funds is important for nursing faculty members. Although faculty rarely request funding from businesses, they are often in a position to solicit financial support due to existing relationships with clinical agency administrators, staff, and community leaders. The economic support received from businesses provides outcomes in nursing research, research education, academic–service partnerships, and client health care. This article describes the steps and processes involved in successfully obtaining research funding from businesses. In …

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified more than 100 genetic variants contributing to BMI, a measure of body size, or waist-to-hip ratio (adjusted for BMI, WHRadjBMI), a measure of body shape. Body size and shape change as people grow older and these changes differ substantially between men and women. To systematically screen for age- and/or sex-specific effects of genetic variants on BMI and WHRadjBMI, we performed meta-analyses of 114 studies (up to 320,485 individuals of European descent) with genome-wide chip and/or Metabochip data by the Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits (GIANT) Consortium. Each study tested the association of up to …

Objective: To determine whether previously reported racial differences in fall rates between White and Black/African American is explained by differences in health status and neighborhood characteristics.
Design: Prospective cohort
Setting: Community
Participants: The study included 550 White and 116 Black older adults in the Greater Boston area (mean age: 78 years; 36% men) who were English-speaking, able to walk across a room, and without severe cognitive impairment.
Measurements: Falls were prospectively reported using monthly fall calendars. The location of each fall and fall-related injuries were asked during telephone interviews. At baseline, we assessed risk factors for falls, including sociodemographic characteristics, …

The Dna Structure And Sequence Preferences Of Wrn Underlie Its Function In Telomeric Recombination Events, Deanna N. Edwards, Amrita Machwe, Li Chen, Vilhelm A. Bohr, David K. Orren

Telomeric abnormalities caused by loss of function of the RecQ helicase WRN are linked to the multiple premature ageing phenotypes that characterize Werner syndrome. Here we examine WRN's role in telomeric maintenance, by comparing its action on a variety of DNA structures without or with telomeric sequences. Our results show that WRN clearly prefers to act on strand invasion intermediates in a manner that favours strand invasion and exchange. Moreover, WRN unwinding of these recombination structures is further enhanced when the invading strand contains at least three G-rich single-stranded telomeric repeats. These selectivities are most pronounced at NaCl concentrations within …

With population ageing and socio-economic development under way, reform of the retirement system has become one of the hottest topics around the globe. Traditionally, retirement is often referred to stoppage of labour and the eligibility to receive the accrued pension. From the perspective of social gerontology, retirement has at least two functions in an industrial society based on waged labours: 1) to recognise and reward employees’ past efforts, and 2) to remove older workers from the system to create more job opportunities for their younger counterparts. However, changes in the work patterns as well as the structural reform of the …

Talking about "death" has always been a taboo for most traditionally-minded Chinese. Even though people understand that nobody could escape from death, they rather want to have a discussion on one's "life" instead. However, does not bringing "death" up the table mean that this topic is unimportant and hence negligible?

Everyone has their own definition of "dream home", but there is always something in common - comfort and safety. Seniors prefer to stay in their own house for as long as possible, yet the inevitable decline of their physical functionality in the process of ageing has rendered some to rely on wheelchairs, canes and other aids. The original interior design might pose threats to them, making the house unsuitable for them.

Population Ageing continues to intensify in Hong Kong while the "Feminisation" of elderly population has become a prominent trend. Since an elderly's quality of life is closely related to his/her life-course experience, Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies of Lingnan University (APIAS) accepted the Hong Kong Women Development Association's commission to develop the Women Development Index, so as to enable earlier intervention to improve women's later lives.

Like many developed societies, Hong Kong is suffering from a rapid ageing population, especially when taking into account the imminent retirement tide of the baby-boomers. According to the Census and Statistics Department, the proportion of the ageing population is projected to rise sharply from 13% in 2011 to 30% in 2041, making Hong Kong a "Hyper-aged Society."
Since most organisations require their older employees to leave the workforce when these employees are reaching retirement age, the experienced, skillful, and still able-to-work manpower will be completely wasted, which severely lower the city's productivity due to a shrinking labour force.

The future of population aging in industrialised countries, including Canada, will be driven not by lower fertility but by extensions in life expectancy. Declining mortality will have the most effect on the oldest age groups.
In this context, Peter Laslett’s (1989) ideas on rethinking traditional approaches to the life cycle are fundamental. He argues that we need to move from three stages of life to four: childhood; adulthood; then the new third age lasting from retirement until old age, which becomes the fourth age (or the oldest-old).
This report examines the present and future characteristics of the oldest old, and …

Vitamin B12 is essential for the proper functioning of all cells. A deficiency can cause serious hematologic and neurologic damage. Groups at high risk for developing vitamin B12 deficiency include the elderly, vegetarians, pregnant women, persons with pernicious anemia, and patients with a history of gastrointestinal (GI) surgery. The purpose of this article is to increase awareness of vitamin B12 deficiency and discuss its pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnostic testing, and management
