Masked Expression Of Life- History Traits In A Highly Variable Environment, Jason A. Deboer, Joseph J. Fontaine, Christopher J. Chizinski, Kevin L. Pope Jan 2015

Masked Expression Of Life- History Traits In A Highly Variable Environment, Jason A. Deboer, Joseph J. Fontaine, Christopher J. Chizinski, Kevin L. Pope

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Differing life-history strategies may act as a constraint on reproductive expression that ultimately limits the ability of individual species to respond to changes in the magnitude or frequency of environmental variation, and potentially underlies the variation oft en inherent in phenotypic and evolved responses to anthropogenic change. Alternatively, if there are environmental cues that predict reproductive potential, differential expression of life-history strategies may represent differences in the adaptive capacity to optimize current reproductive value given variation in environmental conditions. We compared several aspects of walleye Sander vitreus spawning ecology at two reservoirs that diff er in environmental variability (i.e., annual …

Sustaining The Brethren, Duane Boyce Jan 2015

Sustaining The Brethren, Duane Boyce

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Believing Latter-day Saints hold different views about what it means to sustain the presiding Brethren of the Church. In this article, I outline some considerations that might be kept in mind as members of the Church evaluate their views on this vital topic and the Lord’s admonition to sustain the Brethren by their faith, prayers, and actions.

Where In Cincinnati Was The Third Edition Of The Book Of Mormon Printed?, Chris Miasnik Jan 2015

Where In Cincinnati Was The Third Edition Of The Book Of Mormon Printed?, Chris Miasnik

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The third edition of the Book of Mormon was stereotyped and printed in Cincinnati in 1840. The story of the Church’s printer, Ebenezer Robinson, accomplishing this mission has been available since 1883. What has remained a mystery is exactly where in Cincinnati this event took place; there is no plaque marking the spot, no walking tour pamphlet, no previous images, and its history contains conflicting documentation. This article will attempt to untangle the mystery by using old descriptions, maps of the area, and images. I also honor the printer, Edwin Shepard, whose metal and ink made this edition a reality.

“The Great And Terrible Judgments Of The Lord”: Destruction And Disaster In 3 Nephi And The Geology Of Mesoamerica, Neal Rappleye Jan 2015

“The Great And Terrible Judgments Of The Lord”: Destruction And Disaster In 3 Nephi And The Geology Of Mesoamerica, Neal Rappleye

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Over recent decades, several Latter-day Saint scholars and scientists have offered analysis and comparison to geologic events and the destruction recorded in 3 Nephi 8-9. Jerry Grover makes an important contribution to this literature as he provides background on geologic processes and phenomena, details the geologic features of the Tehuantepec region (Mesoamerica), and applies this information to not only the description of 3 Nephi 8-9, but other incidents in the Book of Mormon likely connected to geologic events. In doing so, Grover yields new insights into the narratives he examines, and adds clarity to geographic details that have been subject …

Association Between Dietary Patterns During Pregnancy And Birth Size Measures In A Diverse Population In Southern Us, Uriyoan Colón-Ramos, Susan B. Racette, Jody M. Ganiban, Thuy G. Nguyen, Mehmet Kocak, Kecia N. Carroll, Eszter Volgyi, Frances A. Tylavsky Jan 2015

Association Between Dietary Patterns During Pregnancy And Birth Size Measures In A Diverse Population In Southern Us, Uriyoan Colón-Ramos, Susan B. Racette, Jody M. Ganiban, Thuy G. Nguyen, Mehmet Kocak, Kecia N. Carroll, Eszter Volgyi, Frances A. Tylavsky

Global Health Faculty Publications

Despite increased interest in promoting nutrition during pregnancy, the association between maternal dietary patterns and birth outcomes has been equivocal. We examined maternal dietary patterns during pregnancy as a determinant of offspring’s birth weight-for-length (WLZ), weight-for-age (WAZ), length-for-age (LAZ), and head circumference (HCZ) Z-scores in Southern United States (n = 1151). Maternal diet during pregnancy was assessed by seven dietary patterns. Multivariable linear regression models described the association of WLZ, WAZ, LAZ, and HCZ with diet patterns controlling for other maternal and child characteristics. In bivariate analyses, WAZ and HCZ were significantly lower for processed and processed-Southern compared to healthy …

Funding El Salvador’S Civil War: The Clash Of U.S. Executive And Legislative Branches (Student Version), Julia C. Howington

Suffolk University Archives OERs and Assignments

This open educational resource was developed using resources from Suffolk University's Moakley Archive. The primary sources selected for this lesson provide insight on a crucial moment in late twentieth-century American foreign diplomacy when the executive and legislative branches debated U.S. interests in El Salvador during the 1980s and ‘90s. By closely reading these documents students will be able to: identify the positions taken by the executive and legislative branches positions on U.S. interests in El Salvador during the 1980s and ‘90s; identify and differentiate government stakeholders’ points of view; and develop the skill of close textual analysis.

This includes an …

Situating Sarnia: 'Unimagined Communities' In The New National Energy Debate, Dayna Nadine Scott Jan 2015

Situating Sarnia: 'Unimagined Communities' In The New National Energy Debate, Dayna Nadine Scott

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

This paper argues that the active “unimagining” of downstream communities is crucial to maintaining a notion of unitary national ascent in the rhetoric surrounding the articulation of a new national energy strategy, specifically in relation to the pipeline debates that have gripped and divided Canadians. The exclusion of these unimagined communities downstream is demonstrated by situating Sarnia, Ontario — home to Canada’s biggest petro-chemical complex — both legally and spatially. Examining in detail the recent decision of the National Energy Board approving Enbridge’s application to reverse the flow of oil over a portion of its “Line 9” pipeline between Sarnia …

Käthe Kollwitz’S Imagery Of Maternal Loss, Emma Claire Wolin Jan 2015

Käthe Kollwitz’S Imagery Of Maternal Loss, Emma Claire Wolin

Theses & ETDs

Käthe Kollwitz (1867 – 1945) created imagery of maternal loss that was a radical departure from the sentimental and tender depictions of motherhood that were common in the late nineteenth century. Kollwitz’s imagery of maternal loss is compelling for her portrayal of the suffering a mother experiences at the loss of a child. Though her imagery has its roots in the Christian tradition of the Pietà, or Mary mourning the dead Christ, Kollwitz removes it from the religious realm and suspends the mother and dead child in time and place. I examine what factors enabled Kollwitz’s radically different imagery of …

Climate Change Impacts On Mosquito-Borne Diseases: A Closer Look At Malaria And Dengue, Marisa Godfrey Jan 2015

Climate Change Impacts On Mosquito-Borne Diseases: A Closer Look At Malaria And Dengue, Marisa Godfrey

Theses & ETDs

A new focus of international concern over climate change is the impacts it could have on vector-borne diseases. This thesis specifically looks at two mosquito-borne diseases: malaria and dengue. The ecology of malaria including the vector Anopheles and the parasite plasmodium are examined and how each relates to different climate drivers. Similarly, I examine the ecology of dengue including the vector Aedes and the virus, and how each of those relates to climate drivers. In light of climate and health concerns mosquito control will have to adjust which brings this paper to the case study in Key West, Florida. The …

Developing The New College Soundmap: Toward A Local Listening Community, Sarah Elizabeth Janeway Amos Jan 2015

Developing The New College Soundmap: Toward A Local Listening Community, Sarah Elizabeth Janeway Amos

Theses & ETDs

This text is an exegesis written in accompaniment to the development of the New College Soundmap. The origin and development of soundmap practice and the emergence and development of related environmental sound practices are detailed. The exegesis concludes with an exposition of the development of the New College Soundmap itself. Soundmap practice emerged from the sonic explorations of the World Soundscape Project, who coming out of Simon Fraser University of Burnaby, British Columbia, pioneered the first soundmaps in the early 1970s. From its origins soundmap practice has spread and developed into its current form as a new media practice. This …

The Written Collapse: A Comparative Evaluation Of The Terminal Classic Maya Collapse, Mariama Jones Jan 2015

The Written Collapse: A Comparative Evaluation Of The Terminal Classic Maya Collapse, Mariama Jones

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines collapse theories of the Terminal Classic southern Maya lowland polities in the 8th and 9th centuries, with specific emphasis on Copán and Tikal. This body of work seeks to catalogue Maya collapse theories, thoroughly analyze two Maya polities and finally analyze both states through comparative study, taking special interest in the environmental and political aspects of their collapses. I have analyzed the many causes of the collapse and I have specifically examined the similarities in the collapses of Tikal and Copán, in an attempt to explain the timelines of their collapses. While there has been dissension on …

"A Progeny More Interesting Than Either Parent:" Interpretive Tensions In Multimodal Texts Including Theresa Cha's Dictée, Contemporary Comics, And Online Graphic Novels, A. Reed Wilson Jan 2015

"A Progeny More Interesting Than Either Parent:" Interpretive Tensions In Multimodal Texts Including Theresa Cha's Dictée, Contemporary Comics, And Online Graphic Novels, A. Reed Wilson

Theses & ETDs

This thesis portfolio contains three papers that explore multimodal works that rely on the integration of image and text to form a cohesive narrative. The first piece explores how a multimodal text supports a woman to contextualize the disorientation caused by her diasporic identity in a post-colonial society. The second piece is a sociological piece that analyzes a specific genre of the graphic novel, collections of serialized superhero comics, and how these works handle come of their main thematic concerns: crime, policing, and vigilantism. The third piece in this portfolio discusses the development of the comic form in the United …

An Analysis Of Band-Making Traditions At The Mortuary Site Of Uraca In The Majes Valley, Department Of Arequipa, Peru, Samantha Seyler Jan 2015

An Analysis Of Band-Making Traditions At The Mortuary Site Of Uraca In The Majes Valley, Department Of Arequipa, Peru, Samantha Seyler

Theses & ETDs

The coastal valleys of the far south of Peru have received relatively little attention in the archaeological literature on the Andes. Recently, however, scholars have begun to examine this area to better understand the relationship between these valleys and the Central Andean cultural sphere. Of particular interest are the dynamics between the south coastal valleys of Peru and the Wari heartland during the Middle Horizon. This research aims to better understand Wari methods of expansion and control by examining Wari presence in areas on the periphery. During the summer of 2014 Cassandra K. Scaffidi and Manuel García Márquez conducted excavations …

Dehumanization In Varlam Shalamov’S Kolyma Tales, Alan Sachnowski Jan 2015

Dehumanization In Varlam Shalamov’S Kolyma Tales, Alan Sachnowski

Theses & ETDs

This thesis seeks to interpret Varlam Shalamov’s cycle of short stories Kolyma Tales through the unifying theme of dehumanization. Chapter one examines historic and artistic interpretations of Shalamov’s work in order to substantiate the methodology used in interpreting the tales with the notion of dehumanization. The chapter then supplies an analysis of “Lend-Lease” in order to demonstrate the methodology. Chapter two analyzes “Sententious” by tracking the narrator’s body in relation to his surroundings in a story of unusually long duration relative to the quick moments captured in other tales. The story is emblematic of a reversal of dehumanization to the …

There Goes The Neighborhood: Racial Politics From The Good Neighbor To The New Jim Crow, Patrick Bon Tonissen Jan 2015

There Goes The Neighborhood: Racial Politics From The Good Neighbor To The New Jim Crow, Patrick Bon Tonissen

Theses & ETDs

After the rhetoric of Franklin D. Roosevelt rebranded U.S. foreign relations through the anti-imperial Good Neighbor policy, challenged the racial hierarchies of "Nazi tyranny," and established post-war aims of self-determination and human rights for "all the men in all the lands," the denial of African American human rights undermined the moral legitimacy of the United States to be a model for modernity in the post-colonial world. In order to "outsell Communism" in a decolonizing world, the Truman administration embraced racial liberalism and a "Second Reconstruction" to ameliorate the image of U.S. race relations. In response to Truman‘s racial liberalism, southern …

Spectacle And Dining In Imperial Rome: The Outdoor Triclinia Of Sperlonga And Tivoli, Sarah Tew Jan 2015

Spectacle And Dining In Imperial Rome: The Outdoor Triclinia Of Sperlonga And Tivoli, Sarah Tew

Theses & ETDs

The dining complexes at Tivoli and Sperlonga offer two different case studies of ancient art that should be understood in the context of creative re-vision and participatory reenactment. The dining rooms use the physical landscape to create idealized visions of the empire. This type of vision and revitalization is not unique to the dining room but an incarnation of a culture of spectacle in ancient Rome. Similar phenomena occur in the funeral and triumph, where idealized histories are depicted and reenacted. The architecture and décor of the triclinia at Sperlonga and Tivoli function as stages, on which the foundation and …

Spicy Curry And Racist Salad: Representations Of India And Indian Americans In U.S. Sitcoms, Kyna Patel Jan 2015

Spicy Curry And Racist Salad: Representations Of India And Indian Americans In U.S. Sitcoms, Kyna Patel

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the origins of specific stereotypes and preconceived notions of India and people of Indian descent in the United States and how they are manifested today in American sitcoms. I analyze how some Indian and Indian American characters’ identities are more strongly informed by race, ethnicity, and nationality, which can play a role in perpetuating stereotypes. By looking at story arcs, character development, jokes, and dialogues, I show how varied or homogenous the characters are in the depictions of their identities and to what extent these identities are integral to the series’ comedy.

Dancing Out Of Bounds: The Disruptive Image Of The Tavern Dancer In The Babylonian Talmud, Katherine Renee Mullin Jan 2015

Dancing Out Of Bounds: The Disruptive Image Of The Tavern Dancer In The Babylonian Talmud, Katherine Renee Mullin

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the image of the tavern dancer in two passages from the Babylonian Talmud. Using contemporaneous descriptions of dance and taverns in combination with modern scholarship of late antiquity, this thesis unpacks some of the implications of this image in the context of broader concerns in rabbinic literature of the time. Modern dance theories are used to facilitate this exploration, and generate a model for understanding rabbinic anxieties about the body of the tavern dancer. This thesis argues that the body of the tavern dancer is a productive site for the exposition of rabbinic anxieties about how bodies …

Travel Literature In Dialogue: Negotiated Resistance In The Colonial Encounter, Jessica Loeb Jan 2015

Travel Literature In Dialogue: Negotiated Resistance In The Colonial Encounter, Jessica Loeb

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines representation and resistance in the colonial encounter through a literary analysis of the following four books: Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1899), Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart (1958), Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’s Turkish Embassy Letters (1763) and Fatima Mernissi’s Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood (1995). These books are organized in chapter form in pairs, representing masculine and feminine, colonized and colonizer, Western and native, fiction and non-fiction perspectives. The literature covers a multiplicity of diverse times and places, yet all deal with similar problems, and in many ways are in dialogue with one another …

Sahara Occidental: Legal And Political Analysis Of An Ongoing Conflict, August Tupper Jan 2015

Sahara Occidental: Legal And Political Analysis Of An Ongoing Conflict, August Tupper

Theses & ETDs

The Sahrawi people of Western Sahara have claimed independence since Spanish decolonization in 1975. The Kingdom of Morocco has occupied the Sahrawi homeland for 40 years. Numerous peace plans have failed to bring Morocco and the Polisario Front, the Sahrawi’s negotiating body, any closer to an agreement. Immediately before Spain left the Sahara the United Nations General Assembly requested an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice. The ruling asserted the Sahrawi people’s right to selfdetermination, and required the Spanish, Moroccans, and Mauritanians to guarantee an independence referendum. No such referendum has been held. This study examines the interests …

Restoring And Re-Storying The Haitian Landscape, Nicolas Scheffer Jan 2015

Restoring And Re-Storying The Haitian Landscape, Nicolas Scheffer

Theses & ETDs

There is a common thread in Western depictions of Haiti that emphasizes a constant state of revolution and crisis, an inherent instability or inability to reconcile the goals and promises of emancipation with the realities of Haiti’s position in the world economy. Rhetoric of failure and crisis permeates Western political discourse and journalism and even into the ranks of Haitian society. Media coverage after the earthquake in January 2010 reinforced these tropes and prompted renewed attention to Haiti’s environmental problems, perpetuating a cycle of de-contextualized narratives that blame the rural peasant for the state of Haiti’s environment. Natural events such …

Urban Symbiosis: Negotiating Space Among Governments And Migrants In Contemporary China, William Mccauley Jan 2015

Urban Symbiosis: Negotiating Space Among Governments And Migrants In Contemporary China, William Mccauley

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the complexities and implications of the interactions among migrant groups and government authority in the arena of housing acquisition in contemporary China. As a limited resource essential to urban life and closely linked to government authority, housing is a prized commodity to migrants, urban residents, and governments alike, and therefore offers an excellent launching point for exploring the competing interests of these groups. Current scholarship tends to focus on the marginalization of migrants and obstacles to migrant social mobility, but few researchers address the crucial importance of migrant agency in housing acquisition, or acknowledge the differences among …
