What Is The Nature Of Appalachian Identity?, Elizabeth Trout Jan 2015

What Is The Nature Of Appalachian Identity?, Elizabeth Trout

Communication Studies Student Scholarship

Personal identity affects the way one views themselves, and the world around them. This in turn affects the way that they interact with others, and how they communicate. The Appalachian region in the United States impresses on its people a strong, undeniable identity that sets them apart from others. This identity is influenced by region and sense of place, race and language. The Appalachian identity is unique and complex in nature.

Agriculture, Labor Intensive Growth, And Structural Change: East Asia, Southeast Asia, And Africa, Richard Grabowski Jan 2015

Agriculture, Labor Intensive Growth, And Structural Change: East Asia, Southeast Asia, And Africa, Richard Grabowski

Development Journal of the South

In this paper, it is argued that physically abundant labor is not necessarily cheap labor. The latter depends upon the cost of food staples. Given the non tradability of the latter, rapid growth without rapid agricultural productivity growth will make labor increasingly costly. This will make the transition to labor intensive manufacturing and the exportation of such products very difficult. More importantly, it results in a structural change process in which the economy skips manufacturing and instead shifts in to capital intensive services. The experiences of Taiwan, Indonesia, and Uganda are used to illustrate these ideas.

Cytoplasmic-Nuclear Variation In A Diversity-Fixed Foundation Set Ofbrassica Juncea (L.) Czern & Coss., Javed Akhatar, Nitin Kumar, Chhaya Atri, Surinder Singh Banga

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

A core subset of genetically fixed lines was selected through stratified sampling to represent the allelic variations within Brassica juncea gene pools. It included germplasm accessions from India, China, and Australia, as well as B. Juncea introgression lines carrying alien genetic variation and/or cytoplasm from wild crucifers, namely Diplotaxis cardaminoides, Diplotaxis tenuisiliqua, and Erucastrum abyssinicum. The aim of the study was to infer the influence of underlying cytoplasm on population structure and trait variation. Molecular characterization using nuclear SSR markers (158) and chloroplast SSR markers (9) revealed interesting germplasm patterns and trait variations. Diversity groups obtained using distance-based clustering were …

Status Of The World’S Baleen Whales, Peter O. Thomas, Randall R. Reeves, Robert L. Brownell Jr. Jan 2015

Status Of The World’S Baleen Whales, Peter O. Thomas, Randall R. Reeves, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

No global synthesis of the status of baleen whales has been published since the 2008 IUCN Red List assessments. Many populations remain at low numbers from historical commercial whaling, which had ceased for all but a few by 1989. Fishing gear entanglement and ship strikes are the most severe current threats. The acute and long-term effects of anthropogenic noise and the cumulative effects of multiple stressors are of concern but poorly understood. The looming consequences of climate change and ocean acidification remain difficult to characterize. North Atlantic and North Pacific right whales are among the species listed as Endangered. Southern …

Training Conservation Practitioners To Be Better Decision Makers, Fred Johnson, Mitchell J. Eaton, James H. Williams, Gitte H. Jensen, Jesper Madsen Jan 2015

Training Conservation Practitioners To Be Better Decision Makers, Fred Johnson, Mitchell J. Eaton, James H. Williams, Gitte H. Jensen, Jesper Madsen

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Traditional conservation curricula and training typically emphasizes only one part of systematic decision making (i.e., the science), at the expense of preparing conservation practitioners with critical skills in values-setting, working with decision makers and stakeholders, and effective problem framing. In this article we describe how the application of decision science is relevant to conservation problems and suggest how current and future conservation practitioners can be trained to be better decision makers. Though decision-analytic approaches vary considerably, they all involve: (1) properly formulating the decision problem; (2) specifying feasible alternative actions; and (3) selecting criteria for evaluating potential outcomes. Two approaches …

Uranium-Series Ages Of Fossil Corals From Mallorca, Spain: The “Neotyrrhenian” High Stand Of The Mediterranean Sea Revisited, Daniel R. Muhs, Kathleen R. Simmons, Joaquín Meco, Naomi Porat Jan 2015

Uranium-Series Ages Of Fossil Corals From Mallorca, Spain: The “Neotyrrhenian” High Stand Of The Mediterranean Sea Revisited, Daniel R. Muhs, Kathleen R. Simmons, Joaquín Meco, Naomi Porat

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The emergent marine deposits of the Mediterranean basin have been recognized as an important record of Quaternary sea level history for more than a century. Previous workers identified what have been interpreted to be two separate high stands of sea in the late Quaternary, namely the “Eutyrrhenian” (thought to be ~120 ka) and the “Neotyrrhenian” (thought to be either ~100 ka or ~80 ka). On Mallorca, Spain, both of these named deposits lie close to present sea level, implying paleo-sea levels slightly above present during both marine isotope stages (MIS) 5.5/5e and either 5.3/5c or 5.1/5a. If these interpretations are …

Building Energy Index And Student’S Perceived Performance In Public University Buildings, S.N.N. Syed Yahya, A.R.M. Ariffin, M.A. Ismail Jan 2015

Building Energy Index And Student’S Perceived Performance In Public University Buildings, S.N.N. Syed Yahya, A.R.M. Ariffin, M.A. Ismail

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Numerous studies have shown that students’ learning experience is closely associated with the physical comfort level of their teaching and learning environment. The different strategies or allocation of air-conditioning, mechanical ventilation (ACMV) and lighting systems contribute greatly to the energy performances in the buildings. This study explores the relationship between electricity consumption of academic buildings of a public university in an urban context and its student’s perceived performance. It seeks to find the answer patterns from unsuspected subjects; whether there is a difference from a lower energy-use building then one of a higher energy-use building. To achieve the objective, the …

Measuring Constitutional Islamization: The Islamic Constitutions Index, Dawood I. Ahmed, Moamen Gouda

UC Law SF International Law Review

The military coup in Egypt and the Taliban insurgency in Pakistan and Afghanistan have once again highlighted the political stakes of incorporating Islam within a constitution. Many constitutions in the Muslim world contain clauses that recognize the Islamic character of the state; yet, there is little scholarship empirically analyzing these clauses; indeed, while much has been written about the effects of incorporating a particular type of clause-the Islamic supremacy clause, to date, we know very little about the comparative constitutional universe of Islamic clauses: How prevalent is Constitutional Islamization? Which countries have the most or least Islamized constitutions? Do secular …

Mercosur: Venezuela's New Vehicle For Resistance To American Political And Economic Hegemony, Noah Asa Phillips Jan 2015

Mercosur: Venezuela's New Vehicle For Resistance To American Political And Economic Hegemony, Noah Asa Phillips

UC Law SF International Law Review

Throughout his tenure, President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela carried out an ideological political vision of resistance to United States political and economic hegemony in Latin America. Due to Venezuela's large political and economic influence in Latin America, Chavez's administration has repeatedly thwarted efforts by the United States government and American corporations to maintain their economic dominance in the region. Venezuela's antagonistic foreign policies over the last decade have resulted in an opening up of an autonomous policy space in Latin and Central America and presented a serious pushback to United States political and corporate presence in Latin America.

With Venezuela's …

Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Faculty Publications

The human brain is wired for spatial thinking (GERSMEHL & GERSMEHL 2007), and research has demonstrated that spatial visualization abilities can be improved through education (SORBY & BAARTMANS 2000). This paper describes the uses of cutting edge technology and games to grow spatial thinking, improve spatial design, and solidify landscape planning concepts within the classroom. Specifically, this paper discusses how SimCity 2013, ESRI CityEngine and the Oculus Rift were embedded within a graduate level landscape planning course to see if it improved students understanding of spatial concepts and interest in using related new technologies. While the paper provides a narrative …

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Puccinia helianthi, causal agent of sunflower rust, is a macrocyclic and autoecious pathogen. Widespread sexual reproduction of P. helianthi was documented in North Dakota and Nebraska for the first time in 2008 and has since frequently occurred. Concurrently, an increase in sunflower rust incidence, severity, and subsequent yield loss on sunflower has occurred since 2008. Rust can be managed with resistance genes but determination of virulence phenotypes is important for effective gene deployment and hybrid selection. However, the only P. helianthi virulence data available in the United States was generated prior to 2009 and consisted of aggregate virulence phenotypes …

Who Was Sherem?, A Keith Thompson Jan 2015

Who Was Sherem?, A Keith Thompson

Law Papers and Journal Articles

The Book of Mormon’s first anti-Christ, Sherem, “came among” the Nephites before their first generation was ended. Because he was an eloquent believer in the Law of Moses, there has been a variety of surmise as to his background. Was he a Lamanite, or a Jaredite or Mulekite trader? Was his presence among the separated Nephites evidence of early interaction between the Nephites and other civilisations in Nephite lands from the time of their first arrival? This short article reviews the various suggestions about Sherem’s identity and suggests he was most likely a descendant of the original Lehite party but …

An Innovative Interactive Modeling Tool To Analyze Scenario-Based Physician Workforce Supply And Demand, Saurabh Gupta, W. Stephen Black-Schaffer, James M. Crawford, David Gross, Donald S. Karcher, Jill Kaufman, +13 Additional Authors

Pathology Faculty Publications

Effective physician workforce management requires that the various organizations comprising the House of Medicine be able to assess their current and future workforce supply. This information has direct relevance to funding of graduate medical education. We describe a dynamic modeling tool that examines how individual factors and practice variables can be used to measure and forecast the supply and demand for existing and new physician services. The system we describe, while built to analyze the pathologist workforce, is sufficiently broad and robust for use in any medical specialty. Our design provides a computer-based software model populated with data from surveys …

Film Series Commentaries

“Lone Wolves and Stray Dogs: The Japanese Crime Film, 1931–1969” is a continuing collaboration between the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University and the National Film Center of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Ever since the success of the French crime film Zigomar in 1911, the Japanese film industry has produced numerous movies depicting criminals and the detectives who try to apprehend them. Chivalric yakuza, modern mobsters, knife-wielding molls, hardboiled gumshoes, samurai detectives, femme fatales, and private eyes populate Japanese cinema, from period films to contemporary dramas, from genre cinema to art film, from the …

John L. Sorenson’S Complete Legacy: Reviewing Mormon’S Codex, Brant A. Gardner, Mark Alan Wright

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Mormon’s Codex: An Ancient American Book is unquestionably a monument to an impressive career defending, defining, and explaining the Book of Mormon. John L. Sorenson has been for the New World setting of the Book of Mormon what Hugh Nibley was for the Old World setting. From his earliest 1952 publications using anthropology and geography to defend the Book of Mormon to the 2013 publication of Mormon’s Codex, Sorenson has been the dominant force in shaping scholarly discussions about the Book of Mormon in its New World setting.1 With an impressive 714 pages of text with footnotes, Mormon’s Codex is …

Trends In Nebraska's Wage Distribution, Thao Vu, Eric Thompson

Business in Nebraska

Wage growth has been a persistent challenge for the United States economy in recent decades (Mishel, 2013). Middle class wage growth has been weak while job polarization has widened the gap in wages between the highest and lowest paying jobs. Many argue that technological change and globalization are the two main economic factors behind these trends (Dietz, 2012). These problems have accelerated in the last decade, with U.S. real median wages lower in 2014 than in 2005.

These trends have also played out in Nebraska, including two main metropolitan areas, Lincoln and Omaha - Council Bluffs. In this report, these …

Older, Wiser, Novice: Nontraditional Students And Collegiate Forensics, Laura Pelletier

National Forensic Journal

There is a growing trend in nontraditional college student enrollments in the United States. Due to the constraints on nontraditional students’ time, they are often unable to spend as much time on campus as traditional students and to fully partake in campus life. Co-curricular activities, such as forensics, can be time consuming activities which may seem like an impossible fit for their already busy schedules. Because there are a growing number of nontraditional students, it is worth researching how much of what we do in the forensic community assumes that our students are only part of a traditional student body. …

Fear Of Fatherhood, Deborah Weatherspoon, Wendy Sponsler, Christopher Weatherspoon, Dorothy Campbell Jan 2015

Fear Of Fatherhood, Deborah Weatherspoon, Wendy Sponsler, Christopher Weatherspoon, Dorothy Campbell

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

The fatherhood role is influenced by culture, religion, social factors, and economic norms. In Jamaica pregnancy is often treated as a female only event. Women are left to visit their clinics alone and have support from female family members. The man’s focus is providing financial support. In the past fathers were subjected to migrant labor and left their families for long periods. This tradition remained even when they were not working. Today, men are taking on more of the role of fatherhood, becoming involved and supportive and experiencing the privilege of pregnancy though of a secondary nature through their partner’s …
