Picking Up Where Thoreau Left Off: John Muir And Theodore Roosevelt, An Unlikely Partnership Bringing Thoreau's Vision To Life, Annette Maldonado Jan 2015

Picking Up Where Thoreau Left Off: John Muir And Theodore Roosevelt, An Unlikely Partnership Bringing Thoreau's Vision To Life, Annette Maldonado

Theses and Dissertations

In American history, views of nature have changed over time to fit the needs of the society interacting with the wilderness. The literature of each period reflects the shift in attitudes towards wilderness as it progresses from fear of evil lurking in nature to a need to dominate and exploit it for its useful resources. Over the course of time, the need to conquer and exploit nature was rivaled by an urge to protect it. Ideas of wilderness protection were scarce early in the country’s history, but they were not unheard of; however, by the time of Transcendentalism a definite …

Modis-Based Fractional Crop Mapping In The U.S. Midwest With Spatially Constrained Phenological Mixture Analysis, Cheng Zhong, Cuizhen Wang, Changshan Wu Jan 2015

Modis-Based Fractional Crop Mapping In The U.S. Midwest With Spatially Constrained Phenological Mixture Analysis, Cheng Zhong, Cuizhen Wang, Changshan Wu

Faculty Publications

Since the 2000s, bioenergy land use has been rapidly expanded in U.S. agricultural lands. Monitoring this change with limited acquisition of remote sensing imagery is difficult because of the similar spectral properties of crops. While phenology-assisted crop mapping is promising, relying on frequently observed images, the accuracies are often low, with mixed pixels in coarse-resolution imagery. In this paper, we used the eight-day, 500 m MODIS products (MOD09A1) to test the feasibility of crop unmixing in the U.S. Midwest, an important bioenergy land use region. With all MODIS images acquired in 2007, the 46-point Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time …

It adopts a qualitative approach using a combination of methods such as the long interview, secondary sources research and actual observation. The results are used to develop a framework for …

Cracking Down On Cybercrime Global Response: The Cybercrime Convention, Sylvia Mercado Kierkegaard Jan 2015

Cracking Down On Cybercrime Global Response: The Cybercrime Convention, Sylvia Mercado Kierkegaard

Communications of the IIMA

Computers and the Internet have brought innumerable benefits to society. They have revolutionized the way people work, play, and communicate. In spite of the benefits the Internet has introduced to the global community, it is also fraught with risks associated with undesirable elements keen to misuse its usage. Computers and the Internet present new ways to engage in old crimes, such as fraud and piracy. They also have made it possible for criminals to perpetrate new harmful acts, like data access and interference. However, national legislations and regional agreements are not sufficient to address the global nature of cybercrime. Therefore, …

Critical Success Factors For The Implementation Of Business-To- Business Electronic Procurement, Rebecca Angeles, Ravinder Nath Jan 2015

Critical Success Factors For The Implementation Of Business-To- Business Electronic Procurement, Rebecca Angeles, Ravinder Nath

Communications of the IIMA

This article investigates the critical success factors of e-procurement—the purchase of goods and services for organizations, which usually represents one of the largest expense items in a firm's cost structure. Data was gathered using the survey method and a random sample drawn from the membership of the Institute for Supply Management and the Council of Logistics Management. Data was analyzed from 74 firms that implemented e-procurement. Factor analysis resulted in a four-factor solution: (1) factor one suggests the rationalization of the firm's management of its suppliers; (2) factor two calls for redesigning affected business processes and influencing end-user/employee procurement-related behaviors; …

The Impacts Of Sediment Yield Estimates On A Small Reservoir In Mutoko, Zimbabwe, Brooke Patton Jan 2015

The Impacts Of Sediment Yield Estimates On A Small Reservoir In Mutoko, Zimbabwe, Brooke Patton

Honors Theses

Water scarcity is becoming a more widespread issue due to human modification of local and global hydrologic cycles. In developing countries, land degradation, soil erosion, and its impacts on water resources are significant issues due to ever increasing water resource demands attributable to growing human populations within these areas. Small, multiple-use reservoirs are an important source of water in rural Zimbabwe. It is imperative to develop further insights into, and an understanding of, the linkage between hydrology, land use, and water resource needs in order to develop resilient water supplies for populations living in these areas. Here, a hydrologic and …

Processes within the critical zone—spanning groundwater to the top of the vegetation canopy—have important societal relevance and operate over broad spatial and temporal scales that often are not included in existing frameworks for ecosystem services evaluation. Here we expand the scope of ecosystem services by specifying how critical zone processes extend context both spatially and temporally, determine constraints that limit provision of services, and offer a potentially powerful currency for evaluation. Context: A critical zone perspective extends the context of ecosystem services by expressly addressing how the physical structure of the terrestrial Earth surface (e.g., parent material, topography, and orography) …

A Taxonomy Of Mis, David Majd Jan 2015

A Taxonomy Of Mis, David Majd

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

A perusal of the management information systems (MIS) literature or attendance at a major conference calls attention to the diversity of the discipline and the need to have some larger frame of reference in which to understand MIS research. This paper utilizes two MIS research frameworks to demonstrate the role of integrative thought in understanding and guiding MIS research. A literature review is used to support the claim that the benefits of improved recall, more effective hypothesis generation, wiser allocation of research resources and better interdisciplinary communication can result from the use of these frameworks. Does The Production Of Isoprene Affect The Productivity Of Poplars?, Erik J. Mcfarland, Elizabeth Ann Parra, Greg Barron-Gafford, Rebecca Larkin Minor, Maggie Heard

STAR Program Research Presentations

Poplar trees are known to produce a chemical called isoprene that plays a complex, and not fully understood, role in the chemical process of photosynthesis. Understanding why plants produce isoprene and under what conditions will help scientists make more accurate predictions about poplars’ photosynthetic capabilities in future climates.

What benefit could isoprene provide a plant? The literature suggests its production could help plants tolerate heat stress. We studied two genetic lines of trees in a common garden of Populus, one line with the gene for producing isoprene and a second line without that gene. We subjected some trees of …

Women, Cycling, And The Public Sphere: How Discursive And Community Practices Affect Engagement, Elsa L. Roberts

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This thesis considers the impact that discursive and community practices have on women’s access to the public sphere by examining female cyclists and a cycling community in Miami, Florida via interviews and observation. In the interviews, female cyclists frequently reported fears for their safety, including concern over harassment, when riding in public space. I interviewed participants of the cycling community and observed Emerge Miami’s meetings and events, where publicly organized cycling excursions were a major component. Using the theoretical and methodological lenses of Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis and Communities of Practice, I examined the interviews to understand how participants discursively …

International Migration Of Health Professionals And The Marketization And Privatization Of Health Education In India: From Push-Pull To Global Political Economy, Margaret Walton-Roberts Jan 2015

International Migration Of Health Professionals And The Marketization And Privatization Of Health Education In India: From Push-Pull To Global Political Economy, Margaret Walton-Roberts

International Migration Research Centre

Health worker migration theories have tended to focus on labour market conditions as principal push or pull factors. The role of education systems in producing internationally oriented health workers has been less explored. In place of the traditional conceptual approaches to understanding health worker, especially nurse, migration, I advocate global political economy (GPE) as a perspective that can highlight how educational investment and global migration tendencies are increasing interlinked. The Indian case illustrates the globally oriented nature of health care training, and informs a broader understanding of both the process of health worker migration, and how it reflects wider marketization …
