Is The Puerto Rican Parrot Worth Saving? The Biopolitics Of Endangerment And Grievability, Irus Braverman Apr 2015

Is The Puerto Rican Parrot Worth Saving? The Biopolitics Of Endangerment And Grievability, Irus Braverman

Contributions to Books

Published as Chapter 5 in Economies of Death: Economic Logics of Killable Life and Grievable Death, Patricia J. Lopez & Kathryn A. Gillespie, eds.

“Is the Puerto Rican Worth Saving? The Biopolitics of Endangerment and Grievability” describes how threatened species lists elevate listed nonhuman species from the realm of biological life into that of a political life that is both worth saving and worth grieving. The chapter provides a novel perspective on the biopolitics of lists that highlights both their affirmative properties and their acute relevance for understanding the governance of entire nonhuman species.

The Values Of Nations: The Fate Of Nations Is Not Predetermined, Daniel Reiher Apr 2015

The Values Of Nations: The Fate Of Nations Is Not Predetermined, Daniel Reiher

Senior Honors Theses

The values of a nation are vital for forming the institutions that govern a people and for guiding public policies. This thesis examines the historical institutions and political cultures of several nations and compares them to their geographic (i.e. continental) contemporaries. Particular emphasis is devoted to case-studies of Industrial Revolution Britain, Meiji Restoration Japan, Independent Botswana, and Post-war Asia. This thesis demonstrates a correlation between such institutions as free markets, limited government, and protected personal liberties, with national prosperity. Most importantly, the formation of these institutions was directly affected by the values of the individuals that established them. Values, both …

Relative Abundances Of The Recently Introduced Barnacles, Megabalanus Coccopoma And An Unidentified Species Of Megabalanus, In The Southeastern U.S., Jennifer L. Tyson Apr 2015

Relative Abundances Of The Recently Introduced Barnacles, Megabalanus Coccopoma And An Unidentified Species Of Megabalanus, In The Southeastern U.S., Jennifer L. Tyson

Honors College Theses

ABSTRACT

Megabalanus coccopoma is a prominent invasive species off the coast of Georgia. Recently, among collected samples thought to be M. coccopoma, several individuals of an unidentified species of barnacle were found. The species has been identified as a Megabalanus species, but is still unidentified to the species level. Species identification is difficult due to morphological variation, inconsistent taxonomic keys, and unknown origin. In this study I developed a method to accurately distinguish M. coccopoma from the unidentified Megabalanus sp. using sequence differences in the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene. This study will provide an accurate estimate of …

The Benefit Of Field Trips, Michaela D. Kennedy Apr 2015

The Benefit Of Field Trips, Michaela D. Kennedy

Honors College Theses

Episodic memory is commonly described as a person’s unique recall of a specific event (Joordens, 2012, p. 105). Episodic memories can be triggered from senses such as sights and smells. People have been known to have detailed episodic memories, allowing them to remember extremely specific details from witnessed or experienced episodes in their lives. If episodic memory can be so strong in helping people remember given information, it is thought that they may be able to help people retain specific information when learning about new subjects. If this is the case, it is reasonable to wonder whether or not helping …

Gallai-Ramsey And Vertex Proper Connection Numbers, Emily C. Chizmar Apr 2015

Gallai-Ramsey And Vertex Proper Connection Numbers, Emily C. Chizmar

Honors College Theses

Given a complete graph G, we consider two separate scenarios. First, we consider the minimum number N such that every coloring of G using exactly k colors contains either a rainbow triangle or a monochromatic star on t vertices. This number is known for small cases and generalized for larger cases for a fixed k. Second, we introduce the vertex proper connection number of a graph and provide a relationship to the chromatic number of minimally connected subgraphs. Also a notion of total proper connection is introduced and a question is asked about a possible relationship between the total proper …

Arts-Integration In A Middle Grades Social Studies Classroom, Stephanie J. Dorminey Apr 2015

Arts-Integration In A Middle Grades Social Studies Classroom, Stephanie J. Dorminey

Honors College Theses

Many middle grades students are not engaged in their Social Studies classrooms, and history teachers are faced with the task of finding an effective way to engage students and help them remember the required content. The purpose of this study was to investigate how integrating the arts in a middle grades history classroom influences student learning and student satisfaction in social studies. The study is mixed-methods; therefore, data collected are both quantitative and qualitative. Participants are two classes of middle grades students at a rural school in the Southeastern United States. This study will benefit educators who are interested in …

Learning From Cinara: Exploring The Depths Of Participatory Water Engagement In Cali, Colombia, Zachary T. Strickland

Honors College Theses

Located within the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia, CINARA is an academic institution, comprised of both engineers and social scientists, that has almost three decades of experience regarding participatory approaches to water supply and environmental sanitation. In this paper, I argue that CINARA’s work is important due to its emphasis on meaningful community participation that significantly involves communities in decisions on technical matters that are usually allocated exclusively to “experts.” Furthermore, the valuation of social considerations and non-technical knowledge found amongst CINARA’s engineers stands in distinct contrast to traditional development practices and engineering mindsets. This paper will go on …

Model Of Residence Time And Analysis Of Nitrogen Removal For Two Constructed Wetlands At The Franklin Demonstration Farm In Lexington, Illinois, Emma Singh Baghel Apr 2015

Model Of Residence Time And Analysis Of Nitrogen Removal For Two Constructed Wetlands At The Franklin Demonstration Farm In Lexington, Illinois, Emma Singh Baghel

Theses and Dissertations

Pollution from nonpoint agricultural runoff has become a major problem facing our streams and rivers today. Not only are fish and aquatic life affected, but so is the quality of our drinking and recreational water resources. Studies have shown that wetlands have proven to be the most cost-effective and low maintenance method of removing nonpoint or diffused contaminate inputs. The biological processes and removal of nutrients in wetlands depend on the total surface area available for microbial activity in the soil and a certain period of water retention time. Since chemical processes take time, the measure of residence time is …

WAYS IN WHICH PARTICIPATING IN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS CONTRIBUTES TO THE LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENT-ATHLETES

R. CHAD GOOD

155 pages May 2015

The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to investigate the impact of Division I intercollegiate athletic participation on the student learning and development of former student-athletes. More specifically, in what did ways these student-athletes perceive gains and losses as related to their overall life and career skills repertoire. The study is somewhat unique considering there is a dearth of qualitative research available regarding this particular research topic.

The study focused on the specific ways in which former …

Effects Of Physical Characteristics Of Urban Storm Sewersheds On Water Quality In Bloomington, Il, Alicia Terese O'Hare Apr 2015

Effects Of Physical Characteristics Of Urban Storm Sewersheds On Water Quality In Bloomington, Il, Alicia Terese O'Hare

Theses and Dissertations

Increasing urbanization has consequences for surface water quality. Stormwater is a large component of urban water degradation that is poorly understood. Precipitation is quickly transported via underground pipes, from the land to the stream without following water's natural flow path. Studies have correlated detention ponds with improved water quality and impervious surface cover with degraded water quality. However, other physical characteristics within a storm sewer shed including the presence of sump pumps, area and pipe miles may also affect the stormwater quality. We chose 18 storm sewer systems in Bloomington, IL. We measured pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, chloride, nitrate, …

Multi-Scale Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Brown Bear Habitat In Northern Iberia: A Large Landscape Conservation Planning Perspective, Alma D. Pacheco Apr 2015

Multi-Scale Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Brown Bear Habitat In Northern Iberia: A Large Landscape Conservation Planning Perspective, Alma D. Pacheco

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Problem Statement

The distributions of brown bears in northern Iberia are mainly found in protected areas but they also extend beyond protected boundaries. Since brown bears need large continuous areas of habitat with sufficient availability of preferred foods, escape cover and den sites; it’s important to map brown bear habitats at a landscape level to further examine their connectivity and fragmented habitats. The major problems for brown bear recovery and management in the northern Iberian Peninsula is the lack of identified linkages (one means of achieving connectivity) between subpopulations, and barriers (fragmentation-natural or anthropogenic) that divide them. Brown bear habitats …

Which Wolf, Which Trap? Socially Constructing Wolves And Trapping In Western Montana, Andrew Myers Apr 2015

Which Wolf, Which Trap? Socially Constructing Wolves And Trapping In Western Montana, Andrew Myers

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

In 2011, after nearly forty years of federal protection, gray wolves were removed from the Endangered Species List in Montana and their management entrusted to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. For some, wolves are critical to ecosystem health and an essential part of nature, for others they are a symbol of government overreach threatening their livelihoods and cultural values. The implementation of annual trapping seasons as a method to reduce perceived negative impacts from a growing wolf population has further inflamed an already embroiled debate. The purpose of this research was to investigate various meanings of wolves and wolf trapping …

Acknowledging Sampling Bias In Species Distribution Modelling: Predicting Botrychium Sp. Habitat In Lincoln County, Montana, Annalisa Ingegno Apr 2015

Acknowledging Sampling Bias In Species Distribution Modelling: Predicting Botrychium Sp. Habitat In Lincoln County, Montana, Annalisa Ingegno

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

INTRODUCTION : Over 70 % of Botrychium in Montana are considered “Species of Concern” by the Montana Natural Heritage Program, meaning they are in jeopardy of extirpation due to habitat destruction, limited range, or small population size.12 Thus, developing an effective conservation plan for Montana that maintains current Botrychium sp. diversity and preserves their distribution is critical.5, 4 Unfortunately, Botrychium sp. periodically abstain from producing aboveground fronds due to their symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhiza, complicating long-term data collection strategies.9, 8, 4 Ergo, Botrychium sp. make an ideal candidate for a species distribution model (SDM) because it can …

The Myth Of American Exceptionalism, Carter A. Wilson Dr. Apr 2015

The Myth Of American Exceptionalism, Carter A. Wilson Dr.

Conference Presentations

This paper critiques the contemporary literature on American exceptionalism. It examines the multiple religious, intellectual and racist traditions that have and continue to make up U.S. political culture. It demonstrates that the doctrine of American exceptionalism is full of contradictions and fallacies. Whereas some traditions supported democracy and equality, other cultural traditions operated to sustain and promote racial repression. Both in the past and today, U.S. political culture contains contradictory currents, one progressive and the other reactionary.

Examining The Feasibility Of Implementing A Matrix Model Intensive Outpatient Program In A Remote Alaskan Setting, Frank Ponziano Apr 2015

Examining The Feasibility Of Implementing A Matrix Model Intensive Outpatient Program In A Remote Alaskan Setting, Frank Ponziano

Counseling

Significance: The Matrix Model is possibly the only evidenced-based, intensive outpatient approach for addiction that has been shown to be effective at treating addiction. However, the model has not been evaluated for its effectiveness in remote Alaskan settings, such as Fairbanks, Alaska. Specific Aim: This study examined the feasibility of the Matrix Model compared to Treatment as Usual (TAU) in Fairbanks, Alaska. TAU is defined as any other outpatient substance abuse treatment (SAT) other than Matrix Model treatment program. The model's philosophy will be examined, and a method for determining its feasibility for implementation in Fairbanks, Alaska, will be outlined. …

The Effects Of The Internet On Marketing, Alexander M. Payne Apr 2015

The Effects Of The Internet On Marketing, Alexander M. Payne

Senior Honors Theses

With the use of the Internet, marketers are able to reach consumers where they work, play, shop, and live more efficiently than without it. Through e-commerce, social media, mobile phones, and much more, businesses are able to spread brand awareness, increase market share, and unveil new products. With this great opportunity comes an equally great responsibility, as businesses have now come under extreme scrutiny by their customers. In the Information Age, news travels faster and farther than ever before, with the news of ethical mishaps reaching even the smallest of shareholders. The most crucial element in e-commerce is trust and …
