The Double Bass As A Solo Voice In Flamenco Music, Jeffery M. Utter Apr 2015

The Double Bass As A Solo Voice In Flamenco Music, Jeffery M. Utter

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Flamenco music is an emotional and energetic art form that has developed naturally over centuries by Gypsy people of Spain, primarily in the area known as Andalusia. Historically the music has been solely transmitted aurally and generally not accessible to formally trained musicians. The double bass is a versatile instrument that maintains roles in nearly all genres of music with flamenco being an exception until recently. Even with the contemporary addition of bass to flamenco music, the role of the double bass has been purely accompanimental. This document; through transcription, analysis, and arrangement, presents flamenco music in a way that …

Improved Dairy Cattle: Impact And Distribution In Rural Tanzanian Communities, Jeremy Weaver, Alexon Mwasi, Lindsay Weaver

Interdisciplinary Journal of Best Practices in Global Development

Improved dairy cattle are recognized as an integral part of improving the livelihoods for the rural and urban poor in developing countries. The aim of this research was to measure impact, reveal challenges, map distribution, and establish recommendations for moving forward in improved livestock distribution initiatives. The methods consisted of a hybrid model using both quantitative and qualitative modalities, especially focusing on personal interviews, focus group discussions, field observation, and GIS data capturing. GIS based comparisons could not be made because of a lack of available GIS demographic data for the area. The combined modalities approach (especially the in-depth interviews …

Creating The Chesapeake Bay Marine Protected Area, Emma Thomson Apr 2015

Creating The Chesapeake Bay Marine Protected Area, Emma Thomson

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

The Chesapeake Bay provides economic benefits to its surrounding states in the form of tourism, fishing, recreation, and ecosystem services. However it is not sufficiently protected by these states and is suffering the consequences. This precious habitat needs more protection to ensure the long-term survival of the wildlife and services it provides. Creating a Marine Protected Area (MPA) at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and extending out in to the Atlantic Ocean will protect multiple habitats and fish populations, which will in turn improve the health of the Bay (Narula 2014). This MPA will restrict harmful fishing, drilling, dumping, …

Large Developments And Light Rail Stops: An Analysis Of Development And Transit In The Sacramento Metropolitan Region, Chelsea Bakaitis, Michael Clay Apr 2015

Large Developments And Light Rail Stops: An Analysis Of Development And Transit In The Sacramento Metropolitan Region, Chelsea Bakaitis, Michael Clay

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The traditional downtown and suburban form of a metropolis is becoming an obsolete model to describe the Sacramento region. The region has five commercial centers among the communities (described as “edge cities”) surrounding the traditional downtown of the City of Sacramento (Garreau 1991). Developers of the region have been building and are building large (over 100,000 square feet) units to house multiple uses from medical offices to shopping malls. These buildings are a part of the urban form of Sacramento and are primary to the landscape of the region. The road system is central to landuse practice of the region, …

Surface And Airborne Arsenic Concentrations In A Recreational Site Near Las Vegas, Nevada, Usa, Dirk Goossens, Brenda J. Buck, Yuanxin Teng, Brett T. Mclaurin Apr 2015

Surface And Airborne Arsenic Concentrations In A Recreational Site Near Las Vegas, Nevada, Usa, Dirk Goossens, Brenda J. Buck, Yuanxin Teng, Brett T. Mclaurin

Geoscience Faculty Research

Elevated concentrations of arsenic, up to 7058 μg g-1 in topsoil and bedrock, and more than 0.03 μg m-3 in air on a 2-week basis, were measured in the Nellis Dunes Recreation Area (NDRA), a very popular off-road area near Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The elevated arsenic concentrations in the topsoil and bedrock are correlated to outcrops of yellow sandstone belonging to the Muddy Creek Formation (≈ 10 to 4 Ma) and to faults crossing the area. Mineralized fluids moved to the surface through the faults and deposited the arsenic. A technique was developed to calculate airborne arsenic concentrations from …

Reweaving The History Of Two Late Antique Egyptian Textiles: An Analysis On Textile Fragments From The Institute Of Egyptian Art And Archaeology At The University Of Memphis (2004.1.4) And The Victoria And Albert Museum, London (294-1887), Katlyn Anne Greiner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

My thesis focuses on the analysis of two Late Antique Egyptian textiles: Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology UM/IEAA 2004.1.4 and Victoria and Albert Museum, London 294-1887. Using stylistic, iconographic, and technical analyses, I was able to match these two fragments, in addition to identifying theirprobable location of manufacture and date. The IEAA textile contains three separate pieces, a neckband and two clavi, sewn together. Observations revealed that these decorative elements were recycled from earlier garments and were reused together based on pomegranate imagery. The IEAA clavi employ anunusual motif, which I identified as a composite representation of the pomegranate …

Expired Patents, Saurabh Vishnubhakat

Catholic University Law Review

This article presents a comprehensive empirical description of the public domain of technologies that have recently passed out of patent protection. From a new dataset of over 300,000 patents that expired during 2008–2012, the study examines technological, geographical, and procedural traits of newly public inventions as a basis for exploring the social value associated with their competitive use. Moreover, comparing these inventions to inventions newly patented during the same period enables more specific discussion of how the balance of innovation in the United States continues to change.

Accurately predicting the response of Amazonia to climate change is important for predicting climate change across the globe. Changes in multiple climatic factors simultaneously result in complex non-linear ecosystem responses, which are difficult to predict using vegetation models. Using leaf- and canopy-scale observations, this study evaluated the capability of five vegetation models (Community Land Model version 3.5 coupled to the Dynamic Global Vegetation model - CLM3.5-DGVM; Ecosystem Demography model version 2 - ED2; the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator version 2.1 - JULES; Simple Biosphere model version 3 - SiB3; and the soil-plant-atmosphere model - SPA) to simulate the responses …

A Catalogue Of Latin American Music For Clarinet And Piano, Isabel Thompson Apr 2015

A Catalogue Of Latin American Music For Clarinet And Piano, Isabel Thompson

Open Access Dissertations

The standard clarinet repertoire includes compositions written mostly by Europeans and Americans. However, Latin American compositions have emerged significantly for the last 150 years. Many conservatories in the Caribbean islands, South and Central American countries have begun to include a substantial amount of Latin American compositions in repertoires for all instruments. The purpose of this essay is to provide clarinet performers and mentors in the United States and in the rest of the world with an organized catalogue of compositions written for clarinet and piano by Latin American composers as an addition to their standard repertoire. Many of the reviewed …
