Race And Inequality In Cuban Tourism During The 21st Century, Arah M. Parker Jun 2015

Race And Inequality In Cuban Tourism During The 21st Century, Arah M. Parker

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

As the largest island in the Caribbean, Cuba boasts beautiful scenery, as well as a rich and diverse culture. Yet, throughout Cuban history, the beauty of this famous socialist nation has been marred by social inequalities, primarily affecting class, gender, and race. In the Cuban tourism sector in particular, the three aforementioned components have been prevalent since the island’s inception of tourism in the early 20th Century. With the recent political changes marked by the attempt to restore relations with the United States, this thesis will critically analyze the theories of Black Marxism, Intersectionality, and World Systems Analysis (WSA), …

Organizations Of Women: Towards An Equal Future In Palestine, Beatrice S. Longshore-Cook Jun 2015

Organizations Of Women: Towards An Equal Future In Palestine, Beatrice S. Longshore-Cook

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The development and struggle for nationalism in Palestine, as seen through an historical lens of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, demonstrates the complexity of gendered spaces and narratives inherent in any conflict. Women’s roles have often been confined to specific, gendered spaces within their society. However, through the utilization of these roles, women are circumnavigating the gendered spaces of their society in order to effectively alter the political and social systems of Palestine. Through a discussion of two specific women’s organizations – the Jerusalem Center for Women (JCW) and the Women’s Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling (WCLAC) – this work will …

The Secret Language Of The Desert: Poetry, Loss, And Awakening, Elisha P. Holt Jun 2015

The Secret Language Of The Desert: Poetry, Loss, And Awakening, Elisha P. Holt

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The speaker of The Desert Survival Guide is seeking to reconcile his own disconnection, from the natural world, the cosmos, his family, and from his sense of his own humanity. The poems in The Desert Survival Guide are a healing ceremony, to come to a place of acceptance regarding the loss of my father. The semi-autobiographical speaker of these poems has lost the immediate physical presence of his father in his life but still retains a deep memory imprint of the father and an unresolved need to process the absence of the father. He is gradually establishing a new connection …

“Third-Wave” Coffeehouses As Venues For Sociality: On Encounters Between Employees And Customers, John Manzo Jun 2015

“Third-Wave” Coffeehouses As Venues For Sociality: On Encounters Between Employees And Customers, John Manzo

The Qualitative Report

Contemporary social life is often depicted, in and out of the social sciences, as an ever-worsening subterfuge of alienation, ennui, and the systematic destruction of traditional, human-scaled, publicly-accessible, “organic” sociality that people once enjoyed. In this paper I do not contend that these trends in our social and commercial landscape are not happening. I will instead contend that conventional face-to-face sociability thrives even in the face of the loss of many traditional public meeting places. My focus in this piece is on social interaction in independent cafes that are known, and that self-identify, as what coffee connoisseurs term “third-wave” coffeehouses. …

Understanding And Incentivizing Workforce Housing: A Professional Project For The City Of San Luis Obispo, Jennifer L. Wiseman

Master's Theses

Adding workforce housing to the City of San Luis Obispo Zoning Regulation is a needed component to successfully begin, and promote, the development of housing in the City to those making between 121 and 160% of the Area Median Income. This regulation would ensure eligible households are provided with housing choices within the community, preferably the community in which they work. The addition of Workforce Housing has been a large phenomenon throughout the State of California, and the County as a whole, as housing market prices increase and most salaries maintain at a steady rate. It is important to note …

A European Model For Public Transport Authorities In Small And Medium Urban Areas, Steve Wright Jun 2015

A European Model For Public Transport Authorities In Small And Medium Urban Areas, Steve Wright

Journal of Public Transportation

Public Transport Authorities (PTAs) are well-established in large urban areas. These dedicated authorities act in the public interest to ensure that a well-functioning, integrated transport system operates within their territory. Within Europe, economic pressures and changes in regulation to encourage more competition are providing the catalyst for municipalities/authorities of all sizes to review the structure under which transport is managed and provided in their jurisdictions and to consider the suitability of establishing a PTA. Based on findings from case studies in eight small and medium urban areas across seven European countries, it is clear that although user needs remain at …

A Scientometric Analysis Of Public Transport Research, Leonard Heilig, Stefan Voß

Journal of Public Transportation

Public transport research involves a lot of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research applying methods, techniques, and technologies to investigate, regulate, and advance public transport. The importance of research in this area has led to a huge amount of publications in recent years. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive scientometric analysis of related literature published in 2009–2013 to empirically explore the consistence, focus areas, and key contributors of public transport research from a meta-perspective, providing novel insights into publication patterns, major topics, research impact, and productivity by focusing on short-term developments. As such, the results of this study provide a novel …

Geospatial Data Modeling To Support Energy Pipeline Integrity Management, Austin Wylie Jun 2015

Geospatial Data Modeling To Support Energy Pipeline Integrity Management, Austin Wylie

Master's Theses

Several hundred thousand miles of energy pipelines span the whole of North America -- responsible for carrying the natural gas and liquid petroleum that power the continent's homes and economies. These pipelines, so crucial to everyday goings-on, are closely monitored by various operating companies to ensure they perform safely and smoothly.

Happenings like earthquakes, erosion, and extreme weather, however -- and human factors like vehicle traffic and construction -- all pose threats to pipeline integrity. As such, there is a tremendous need to measure and indicate useful, actionable data for each region of interest, and operators often use computer-based decision …

The Smart Growth Implications Of The Los Angeles Adaptive Reuse Ordinance, Forrest F. Chamberlain Jun 2015

The Smart Growth Implications Of The Los Angeles Adaptive Reuse Ordinance, Forrest F. Chamberlain

Master's Theses

The Los Angeles Adaptive Reuse Ordinance (ARO) is an incentive program that encourages building reuse through regulatory exemptions. The ARO was partially intended to reduce vehicle miles travelled by encouraging mixed commercial and residential uses in existing buildings within Downtown Los Angeles and areas poised for redevelopment (Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, 2004, pp. 22, 51). Researchers and planners claim that the ARO helped to reduce vehicle miles travelled (Bell, 2014; Los Angeles Department of City Planning, 2014d; Bullen & Love, 2009; Bernstein, 2012), but these claims are not supported by discussions of the spatial distribution of ARO projects in …

A Customer Value Assessment Process (Cvap) For Ballistic Missile Defense, Alex Hernandez Jun 2015

A Customer Value Assessment Process (Cvap) For Ballistic Missile Defense, Alex Hernandez

Master's Theses

A systematic customer value assessment process (CVAP) was developed to give system engineering teams the capability to qualitatively and quantitatively assess customer values. It also provides processes and techniques used to create and identify alternatives, evaluate alternatives in terms of effectiveness, cost, and risk. The ultimate goal is to provide customers (or decision makers) with objective and traceable procurement recommendations. The creation of CVAP was driven by an industry need to provide ballistic missile defense (BMD) customers with a value proposition of contractors’ BMD systems. The information that outputs from CVAP can be used to guide BMD contractors in formulating …

Bishop Peak Natural Reserve Conservation Plan Update, Douglas J. Bush Jun 2015

Bishop Peak Natural Reserve Conservation Plan Update, Douglas J. Bush

Master's Theses

My master's project is updating the Conservation Plan for the Bishop Peak Natural Reserve (BPNR) in San Luis Obispo, California. It is a professional project for the City of San Luis Obispo, supported by City policy that requires continued management of its open space network through management plans unique to each property. As one of the city's most visited open spaces and one of its most visible natural landmarks, the Bishop Peak Natural Reserve is in need of continued management and oversight. While much of the work in developing the plan focused on identifying issues and developing responsive policy, this …

Curating Massive Media, Dave Colangelo Jun 2015

Curating Massive Media, Dave Colangelo

School of Film Faculty Publications and Presentations

The European Union’s media art initiative Connecting Cities and New York-based Streaming Museum are two recent examples of curatorial models that operate through large, networked, digital displays. This growing exhibition category combines expressive media architecture and telecommunication elements to engage ‘trans-local’ sites and diverse publics in complex media spaces. By investigating the confluence of exhibition making, public art and urban experience, this article explores the relationship between spectacle and criticality with respect to shifting notions of space, identity and ‘the common’.

Where The Ends Don't Meet In 2014: Measuring Poverty And Self-Sufficiency Among Oregon's Families, Elizabeth Morehead, Sheila A. Martin Jun 2015

Where The Ends Don't Meet In 2014: Measuring Poverty And Self-Sufficiency Among Oregon's Families, Elizabeth Morehead, Sheila A. Martin

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

This report sheds light on the economic realities facing many of Oregon’s households and provides an initial picture of the extent of income inadequacy in Oregon. Although addressing this issue is challenging, it can be seen as encouraging that many householders with below-Standard incomes are already part of the workforce. It is possible that many householders have adequate levels of education and experience but face other barriers that keep their wages low or raise their expenses. Identifying and addressing such barriers is the next step in bringing household incomes and costs into balance.

Hot Property In New Zealand: Empirical Evidence Of Housing Bubbles In The Metropolitan, Ryan Greenaway-Mcgrevy, Peter C.B. Phillips Jun 2015

Hot Property In New Zealand: Empirical Evidence Of Housing Bubbles In The Metropolitan, Ryan Greenaway-Mcgrevy, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Using recently developed statistical methods for testing and dating exhuberant behavior in asset prices we document evidence of episodic bubbles in the New Zealand property market over the past two decades. The results show clear evidence of a broad-based New Zealand housing bubble that began in 2003 and collapsed over mid 2007 to early 2008 with the onset of the worldwide recession and the financial crisis. New methods of analyzing market contagion are also developed and are used to examine spillovers from the Auckland property market to the other metropolitan centres. Evidence from the latest data reveals that the greater …

Still “Saving Babies”? The Impact Of Child Medicaid Expansions On High School Completion Rates, Lincoln H. Groves Jun 2015

Still “Saving Babies”? The Impact Of Child Medicaid Expansions On High School Completion Rates, Lincoln H. Groves

Center for Policy Research

Precipitated by the legislative decision to decouple child Medicaid benefits from welfare receipt, the number of young children qualifying for public health insurance grew markedly throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. From a baseline of roughly 15% in the average state at the beginning of the decade, the rate increased to more than 40% of all young children in the United States by the time all federal mandates were fully enacted in 1992. This paper extends the academic literature examining early childhood investments and longer-term human capital measures by exploring whether public health insurance expansions to low-income children led to …

"We Didn't Cross The Border; The Border Crossed Us": Informal Social Adaptations To Formal Governance And Policies By Communities Across The Bering Sea Region In The Russian Far East And United States, Sarah Roop, Lilian Alessa, Andrew Kliskey, Maryann Fidel, Grace Beaujean

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

Territorially isolated villages along the shores of the U.S. and Russian Bering Sea live with stark political lines dividing a region that shares a common history, heritage, and contemporary existence. It is also a region whose environmental security is threatened by common changes occurring throughout the area but for whom possible responses to these changes are shaped by the policies and politics of the countries in which they reside. This paper is based on the experience from an international observing network, the Community Observing Network for Adaptation and Security (CONAS), which provides rare insights on how political context, across the …

The Role Of Intermediary In Sustainable Lending: An Economic Analysis Of Crowdfunding Platform, Ling Ge, Zhiling Guo Jun 2015

The Role Of Intermediary In Sustainable Lending: An Economic Analysis Of Crowdfunding Platform, Ling Ge, Zhiling Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Is the interest-free crowdfunding platform a promising alternative to the non-zero interest platform? This study investigates the lenders and borrowers’ incentives and choices between an indirect, non-zero interest rate platform intermediated by a field partner and a direct-lending, interest-free platform. We model the field partner as a profit maximizer that filters qualified borrowers to enable the lenders’ capital to be better utilized on the crowdfunding platform. We show that, under certain conditions, both the borrowers and lenders are better off from the existence of the field partner. The existence of field partner is necessary to effectively segment the market and …

Exploring Well-Being And Gross National Happiness In Sustainable Development Policy Making, Donatella Alessandrini, Suhraiya Jivraj, Asta Zokaityte Jun 2015

Exploring Well-Being And Gross National Happiness In Sustainable Development Policy Making, Donatella Alessandrini, Suhraiya Jivraj, Asta Zokaityte

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

In this paper we reflect on the transnational discourse on national WellBeing and Happiness (WBH) which has gained international prominence with the 2012 United Nations Conference. Although for quite some time the studies on WBH have been on the agenda of international bodies, we see the post-2007 proliferation and transnational convergence of well-being initiatives, particularly those aimed at measuring wellbeing through indicators, as potentially replacing the development discourse of the post-war period in terms of normative force and appeal. Aiming to unpack such normative appeal, we focus on three sites, the UK, Bhutan and Ecuador, and ask what well-being and …

Understanding Risk Through Board Games, Joshua T. Hertel Jun 2015

Understanding Risk Through Board Games, Joshua T. Hertel

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this article, I describe a potential avenue for investigating individual’s understanding of and reactions to risk using the medium of board games. I first discuss some challenges that researchers face in studying risk situations. Connecting to the existing probabilistic reasoning literature, I then present a rationale for using board games to model these situations. Following this, I draw upon intuition and dual-process theory to outline an integrated theoretical perspective for such investigations. The article concludes with two vignettes demonstrating how this perspective might be used to analyze thinking about risk in a board game setting.

The Brazilian Landless Rural Workers’ Movement (Movimento Sem Terra, MST) is one of the largest social movements in the world. Situated in a country with extremely unequal land distribution, the MST was originally concerned with obtaining land for agrarian reform settlements through the occupation of latifúndia (large estates of the landed elite). However, after realizing its struggle over land rights was rooted in deeper structural issues in Brazilian society, the MST broadened its goals to seeking wider societal change. Over the past thirty years, it has evolved into a movement that pursues social justice by challenging dominant capitalist discourses. This …

Midwifery In Gilgit Baltistan By Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan, Nawroz Zeenat, Rafat Jan

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Midwives are practicing in diverse capacities in public and private health settings of Pakistan, including Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) such as the Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan (AKHS, P), which is a leading non-profit, non-governmental and non-denominational community-based organization that provides quality maternal and child health services all over Pakistan. Maternal and child health centers led by registered Midwives and Lady Health visitors (LHV), were specifically established in Gilgit Baltistan in 1974 by this NGO as a strategy to combat the alarming rates of maternal and child mortalities.
