Resolving the debate surrounding the nature and controls of seasonal variation in the structure and metabolism of Amazonian rainforests is critical to understanding their response to climate change. In situ studies have observed higher photosynthetic and evapotranspiration rates, increased litterfall and leaf flushing during the Sunlight-rich dry season. Satellite data also indicated higher greenness level, a proven surrogate of photosynthetic carbon fixation, and leaf area during the dry season relative to the wet season. Some recent reports suggest that rainforests display no seasonal variations and the previous results were satellite measurement artefacts. Therefore, here we re-examine several years of data …

Who Takes Advanced Placement?, Benjamin Scafidi, Chris Clark, John Swinton

Faculty Articles

In recent years there has been a renewed interest in the sources of achievement gaps between groups of students. One potential source is differential access to high quality educational opportunities. This paper provides an analysis of who takes Advanced Placement (AP) Economics. Using two years of administrative data on all high school students who take a course to satisfy Georgia’s graduation requirement in economics, we find large differences in enrollment in AP Economics across groups. Specifically, African-American and Hispanic students and students from low-income backgrounds are about half as likely to be enrolled in AP Economics as other students. However, …

Organization And Access To The Chinese Books/Cds/Dvds Donated By Hanban To The Confucius Institutes In The United States, Yan Ma

Graduate School of Library and Information Studies Faculty Publications

Confucius Institutes in the United States and in the world have been established since 2004. There are over 96 Confucius Institutes in the US and over 480 in 6 continents in the world as of 2015. One of the programs for each Confucius Institute is the donation of books/CDs/DVDs from Hanban, i.e., the Confucius Institute Headquarters. Organization and access to these donated resources in each Confucius Institute has become either a natural addition to the institutional library or presented a professional challenge. This research explores the practices of organization and access to these resources in each Confucius Institute and its …

Cycling Willingness: Investigating Distance As A Dependent Variable In Cycling Behavior Among College Students, Thomas Wuerzer, Susan G. Mason Jun 2015

Cycling Willingness: Investigating Distance As A Dependent Variable In Cycling Behavior Among College Students, Thomas Wuerzer, Susan G. Mason

Urban Studies and Community Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a novel approach to understanding distance as a barrier to cycling and its use as a dependent variable in multinomial logistic regression. In doing so, this study explores distances in relation to spatially and relevant human factors such as gender and propensity to cycle among college students. College students (N = 949) participated in a health survey and stated possible predictors of cycling based on their cycle usage and preferences in the previous 30 days. While utilizing GIS in a bicycle-friendly network, we created geo-statistical GIS-groupings and performed multinomial logistic regression analysis. We examined college students to discover …

Section 1 outlines the educational values and perspectives that have underpinned school funding policies and programs and describes major themes in the evolution of schools funding – quality, equity and choice – providing a general guide for subsequent analyses. Section 2 provides a policy history of schools funding 1964 – 2011, during which time the Commonwealth government emerged as a significant funding partner. It analyses the political forces and recurring themes, …

Influence Of Changes In Political Barriers And Of Geographic Distance On Kinship Inferred From Surnames And Migration Data In Olivenza (Spain) And Surrounding Portuguese Areas, J. Román-Busto Jun 2015

Influence Of Changes In Political Barriers And Of Geographic Distance On Kinship Inferred From Surnames And Migration Data In Olivenza (Spain) And Surrounding Portuguese Areas, J. Román-Busto

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The existing relationship between human populations is a function of their migratory and genetic exchange which will be inversely proportional to the distance separating them. The effect of geographic distance on population structure may be estimated by means of isonymic methods which use information on the surnames present in a territory as an approximation to the distribution of allele frequencies. The objective of this study is to analyse whether the modification in 1801 of the political border in an area surrounding the town of Olivenza, which experienced a change of sovereignty from Portugal to Spain, has had noticeable influence on …

Focusing On The Six Major Themes In The Global Perspective Of Andragogy: A June 2015 Update, John Henschke

Adult Education Faculty Works

Andragogy has received various mixed reviews in the past. Some have analyzed it from a positive perspective. Others have analyzed it from a negative perspective, still others have viewed it from a neutral or passive point of view while some have ignored it altogether. Most of the discussions have limited their observations to how Malcolm S. Knowles addressed andragogy. There has been an inadequate investigation of the foundation and background of andragogy from a world perspective. This research presents more than 450 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy that may help provide a clear …

Harvest Strategy Policy And Operational Guidelines For The Aquatic Resources Of Western Australia, Western Australia. Dept. Of Fisheries

Fisheries Management Papers

Harvest strategies establish the decision rules that determine the appropriate harvest levels for all sectors to meet the ecological, economic and social objectives established for a resource. The development and implementation of formal harvest strategies is considered sound practice in contemporary fisheries management. A number of recent legislative (new Aquatic Resources Management Act, ARMA) and policy (Marine Stewardship Council, MSC) initiatives require the development of formal harvest strategies for the key aquatic resources in Western Australia (WA).

L’Inscription Territoriale De La Peur Dans Le Roman Urbain Camerounais De Langue Française, Étienne-Marie Lassi Jun 2015

L’Inscription Territoriale De La Peur Dans Le Roman Urbain Camerounais De Langue Française, Étienne-Marie Lassi

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article analyzes the fictionalization of Cameroonian urban socio-political and geographical realities as well as the literary effects derived from the inclusion of real urban spaces in the novel. Based on the concepts of ecology of fear and existential territory, it shows that in Cameroon urban novels, the physical environment is a factor of instability of individuals and communities. It speculates that, in the novels studied, physical environment crystallizes political, social and psychological fears and anguish and presents itself as an important issue both in the interpretation of literary texts and in the resolution of postcolonial crises.

Playing Hell In Charleston - Daniel Payne, Clementa Pinckney And The Fight Against White Supremacy, Susanna Ashton Jun 2015

Playing Hell In Charleston - Daniel Payne, Clementa Pinckney And The Fight Against White Supremacy, Susanna Ashton

Publications

The men and women massacred while studying the Bible the other night in the Emanuel A. M. E. Church were, in their own way, raising hell.

That phrase might seem ill conceived or even disrespectful but it can be invoked here to honor their courage and the A. M. E Church’s long tradition of challenging white supremacy. Their private prayer this week was political simply because their mere existence challenged racial power. There is a long contextual history of race violence in America which gives us tools to see this event clearly but even more than that, there is a …

"We Didn't Cross The Border; The Border Crossed Us": Informal Social Adaptations To Formal Governance And Policies By Communities Across The Bering Sea Region In The Russian Far East And United States, Sarah Roop, Lilian Alessa, Andrew Kliskey, Maryann Fidel, Grace Beaujean

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

Territorially isolated villages along the shores of the U.S. and Russian Bering Sea live with stark political lines dividing a region that shares a common history, heritage, and contemporary existence. It is also a region whose environmental security is threatened by common changes occurring throughout the area but for whom possible responses to these changes are shaped by the policies and politics of the countries in which they reside. This paper is based on the experience from an international observing network, the Community Observing Network for Adaptation and Security (CONAS), which provides rare insights on how political context, across the …

Who Leads The G-Zero World? Multi-Nationals, Sustainable Development, And Corporate Social Responsibility In A Changing Global Order, Avi Sharma Jun 2015

Who Leads The G-Zero World? Multi-Nationals, Sustainable Development, And Corporate Social Responsibility In A Changing Global Order, Avi Sharma

Washington International Law Journal

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) aim to create a more peaceful, just, and environmentally sustainable global community. The SDGs target seventeen areas that demand immediate action by the international community, including the eradication of poverty, gender equality, climate change mitigation, and resilience building. Unfortunately, the world’s most powerful nation-state actors are unlikely to make the costly investments required to achieve the goals laid out in this ambitious UN document. In fact, this article argues that nation-state actors have powerful disincentives to play a leadership role in advancing the SDGs. The question then becomes: if nation-states are unable or unwilling …

Hybrid Tribunals And The Composition Of The Court: In Search Of Sociological Legitimacy, Harry Hobbs Jun 2015

Hybrid Tribunals And The Composition Of The Court: In Search Of Sociological Legitimacy, Harry Hobbs

Chicago Journal of International Law

Sociological legitimacy is a critical yet undertheorized element of a successful international criminal tribunal. This Article examines the link between sociological legitimacy and the composition of hybrid courts by analyzing the practice of five international criminal tribunals: the ICC, ICTY, ICTR, SCSL, and the ECCC. It finds that the presence of local judges on international criminal courts offers a firmer normative basis for enhancing their legitimacy among the local community. However, the Article also finds that despite impressive scholarly efforts to demystify the “homogenous” international community, international judges are not sufficiently particularized. The solution I offer is both principled and …

An International Assessment Of Mangrove Management: Incorporation In Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Haille N. Carter, Steffen W. Schmidt, Amy Hirons

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Due to increasing recognition of the benefits provided by mangrove ecosystems, protection policies have emerged under both wetland and forestry programs. However, little consistency remains among these programs and inadequate coordination exists among sectors of government. With approximately 123 countries containing mangroves, the need for global management of these ecosystems is crucial to sustain the industries (i.e., fisheries, timber, and tourism) and coastal communities that mangroves support and protect. To determine the most effective form of mangrove management, this review examines management guidelines, particularly those associated with Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). Five case studies were reviewed to further explore …

Using Satellite Image Analysis For Locating Prehistoric Archaeological Sites In Alaska's Central Brooks Range, Robert Hickey, J. Keeney Jun 2015

Using Satellite Image Analysis For Locating Prehistoric Archaeological Sites In Alaska's Central Brooks Range, Robert Hickey, J. Keeney

Geography Faculty Scholarship

In this pilot study, we apply satellite image analysis to archaeological site prospection in Alaska's Brooks Range. Our goal was to test whether satellite remote sensing, which has been successful in locating large archaeological features associated with sedentary peoples, could be applied to arctic interior sites associated with mobile hunter–gatherers. In particular, we strove to develop a relatively straightforward and inexpensive model using existing data which could be used to help guide archaeology surveys. Using 1-m resolution IKONOS imagery of Lake Matcharak along the upper Noatak River, we produced a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and tasseled cap transformation of …

Risky Research Business: Mathematics Education Research On The Margins, Erika C. Bullock

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Although we would like to believe that decisions about what research to conduct and how to conduct it are based solely on researcher interest and societal need, the reality is that external political and disciplinary factors do play a role. Scientifically based research (SBR) is one example of external political pressures that shape researcher choice both directly and indirectly. Additionally, disciplines like mathematics education operate under hidden curricula that have the potential to marginalize particular research foci. The purpose of this paper is to consider the implications of such a narrow focus on a young mathematics education researcher’s choices about …

Geographical Applications Of Performance Measures For Transit Network Directness, Young-Jae Lee, Jung Yoon Choi, Jeong Whon Yu, Keechoo Choi Jun 2015

Geographical Applications Of Performance Measures For Transit Network Directness, Young-Jae Lee, Jung Yoon Choi, Jeong Whon Yu, Keechoo Choi

Journal of Public Transportation

This research developed a geographical presentation method to show which areas of the city need to be improved in terms of the directness of transit service using two measures, Degree of Competitiveness and Degree of Circuity, which were developed in the first author’s previous research. In this research, the directness of transit networks in five cities in Korea was analyzed and compared as an example and demonstrated geographically. The results show that although more populated cities are likely to provide more direct transit service than less populated cities, population density affects the transit network directness more. Also, this research showed …

Is China Destined To Play High-Politics In East Asia?, M.A. Karim Jun 2015

Is China Destined To Play High-Politics In East Asia?, M.A. Karim

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The aim of this paper is to project China’s emerging trend towards high-politics in East Asia that is ostensibly generated by regional geopolitical dynamics. Hegemonic transition, replacing hegemonic stability, may seemingly be activating the dynamics. There is almost an inexorable move towards high-politics due mainly to presence of issues that are likely to trigger conflict, possibly a limited war. These issues range from flash points to populist nationalism, economic interdependence, and a competition for supremacy in the Western Pacific. The paper concludes by highlighting likely resultant hi-politics, action-reaction cycles, polarizations and alignments by arraying of forces, probability of a limited …

Subjective Well-Being In China: The Role Of Relative Income, Gender And Location, M.N. Asadullah, S. Xiao

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

We use data from two rounds of Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) to study the determinants of subjective well-being in China over the period 2005-2010 during which self-reported happiness scores show an increase across all income groups. Ordered probit regression of well-being function reveals large influence of gender, rural residency and household income. Net of control for demographic attributes, health, employment and education status, household assets, the influence of past and future income and province dummies, we find that women, urban resident and people with higher income are happier in China. More schooling and better health are positively and significantly …
