Teacher Beliefs And The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics, Erin M. Smith
Teacher Beliefs And The Common Core State Standards For Mathematics, Erin M. Smith
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Widespread adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) marks an unprecedented event in American education: nearly all students have an opportunity to learn the same mathematics content at the same stage of their K-12 educational experience. One goal of the CCSSM is to promote mathematics educational equity and excellence through common, rigorous standards. However, common standards may not translate to a common learning experience for all students. Teachers’ mathematical beliefs act as filters through which new information is interpreted and dispositions toward actions taken in the classroom. This study examined this beliefspractice relationship by asking two questions: …
Violence And Structure In Emerging Political Institutions, Jordan Nottingham
Violence And Structure In Emerging Political Institutions, Jordan Nottingham
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Violence has long been a crucial mechanism through which emerging political institutions (EPIs) achieve control. The unwilling transition of power has often led to violent action in the past. While violence in times of war is standard and has been discussed at length, there is notably less discussion about the types of violence used by EPIs and their institutional structure when they use different types of violence. The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), Hamas, and the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood (EMB) present three notably different cases of EPIs whose implementation of violence varies considerably, but whose ambition for state …

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps: History, Use, Availability, Lynne Mueller
The Primary Source
Sanborn fire insurance maps are an excellent resource for anyone researching specific American communities, buildings, or industries from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. High production standards insure uniform information over time. To extract the most information, the user needs to understand the original purpose of the maps and how to interpret the visual elements. In addition, the researcher needs access to the right maps.
Medieval Architectures For Religious Tourism And Hospitality Along The Pilgrimage Routes Of Northern Italy, Silvia Beltramo
Medieval Architectures For Religious Tourism And Hospitality Along The Pilgrimage Routes Of Northern Italy, Silvia Beltramo
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Sacred spaces are, and have always been, places of reception: hospitality is in fact a precept of God. Many biblical passages remind us of this, such as the one (Gen 18, 4-5) in which Abraham welcomes three guests, washes their feet and offers them a piece of bread and a place to rest under a tree. Saint Benedict too, in chapter 53 of the Rule, insisted on the need to honour pilgrims and travellers, who should be welcomed with a charitable service ready for devotion and stated that all guests who entered the monastery should be received as …
Forms Of Pilgrimage At The Shrine Of Khāled Nabi, Northeastern Iran, Mehdi Ebadi
Forms Of Pilgrimage At The Shrine Of Khāled Nabi, Northeastern Iran, Mehdi Ebadi
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Pilgrimage (religious tourism) is one of the fastest growing forms of tourism. Nevertheless, there is still a gap between abstract theory and empirical research about this form of tourism in the literature. This dearth of tourism studies is even more glaring in the field of Ziyārat or pilgrimage in Islam which in spite of its importance and wide extended practice have been mostly ignored in tourism and geographic literature. The present study features one such area that is (almost) unknown within the community of tourism and geography researchers. In Iran, religious pilgrimage has a long tradition. Numerous sacred places with …

Religious Tourism And Event Management: An Opportunity For Local Tourism Development, Stefania Cerutti, Elisa Piva
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Religious events represent one of the ancient forms of encounter and should play an important role in enhancing tourism in the areas in which they take place. The aim of the study is to investigate the role of religious events as a key component of local tourism development. The adopted research methodology is primarily based on the gathering and interpretation of qualitative data. The paper considers small and medium sized religious events, analysing their event management process. It focuses on two case studies in northern Italy: the Devotional and Cultural Tourism Exchange of Oropa and the Passion Play of Sordevolo.
Religious Activities And Their Tourism Potential In Sukur Kingdom, Nigeria, Emeka Okonkwo
Religious Activities And Their Tourism Potential In Sukur Kingdom, Nigeria, Emeka Okonkwo
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Religious tourism is a form of tourism whereby people of the same faith travel individually or in groups for religious purposes. This form of tourism comprises many facets of the travel industry ranging from pilgrimages, missionary travel, leisure (fellowship), vacations, faith-based cruising, crusades, conventions and rallies, retreats, monastery visits and guest-stays, Christian and faith-based camps, to religious tourist attractions. In Sukur Kingdom, most tourists embark on religious travel for the primary purpose of sharing faith and fellowship together as they explore the various religious sites within Sukur and Adamawa State at large. Others still seek inspiration and desire to witness …

Efficacy Of Visual Surveys For White-Nose Syndrome At Bat Hibernacula, A. F. Janicki, W. F. Frick, A. M. Kilpatrick
KIP Articles
White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) is an epizootic disease in hibernating bats caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans. Surveillance for P. destructans at bat hibernacula consists primarily of visual surveys of bats, collection of potentially infected bats, and submission of these bats for laboratory testing. Cryptic infections (bats that are infected but display no visual signs of fungus) could lead to the mischaracterization of the infection status of a site and the inadvertent spread of P. destructans. We determined the efficacy of visual detection of P. destructans by examining visual signs and molecular detection of P. destructans on 928 bats of six …

Graduate Students’ Perceptions Of Sense Of Community And Contributing Factors, Amy Lynn Watters
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Research indicates that a strong sense of community has many benefits for the learner, including increased engagement, persistence, satisfaction, and perceived learning. The growth of online learning requires that effective strategies be identified to establish a strong sense of community in a virtual environment. This mixed method study investigated the following primary and secondary question: What are graduate students’ perceptions regarding sense of community in the online graduate programs at a small, private college? What contributes to graduate students’ sense of community in the online graduate programs at a small, private college? A quantitative survey using Likert-type questions was sent …
Understory Tree Composition, Diversity And Natural Regeneration Status Of Uluguru Forests In Morogoro- Tanzania, David S. Kacholi
Understory Tree Composition, Diversity And Natural Regeneration Status Of Uluguru Forests In Morogoro- Tanzania, David S. Kacholi
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Most of the studies on tropical forests vegetation have tended to focus on trees with a diameter at breast height (DBH) greater or equal to 10cm, and limited attention has been paid to understory. This study was conducted in Uluguru forests in Morogoro region, Tanzania, with an objective of describing the understory tree composition, diversity and natural regeneration of some threatened species in the seven surveyed forests. Sampling was done in the forests whereby classification of understory was done into three layers: seedling (individuals with height < 1m), small sapling (DBH ≤ 3 cm), and large sapling (3 < DBH < 10 cm) layers. Large saplings were sampled in 20m × 20m plots, while subplots of 5m ×5m and 2m ×2m were placed at the centre of each plot for sampling small saplings and seedlings, respectively. A total of 2119 seedlings, 1798 small saplings, and 2585 large saplings belonging 91, 102, and 104 species, respectively, were recorded. Fabaceae was the most speciosefamily in all the studied compartments, and had higher familial importance value (FIV). The seedling layer had higher tree density than the large and small sapling layers, but the large and small sapling layers were more diverse than the seedling layer (p < 0.05).The species richness in each forest was significantly higher in the understory than overstory layer (p < 0.034); and the pairing was strongly positively correlated (r = 096, p = 0.0003). The Sørensen coefficients of similarities between understory and overstory ranged between 0.53–0.77, and were higher within each forest than among them. All forests revealed to have good regeneration, though it is important to understand that some species unveiled poor or hampered regeneration pattern. In summary, the understory was observed to be speciose than overstory layer; it was dominated by family Fabaceae, and the natural regeneration of the forests were good, however, some species need due attention.
Prospects For An Independent Judiciary: The Russian Constitutional Court And The Cpsu Trial, Lynne M. Tracy
Prospects For An Independent Judiciary: The Russian Constitutional Court And The Cpsu Trial, Lynne M. Tracy
Akron Law Review
This Comment will explore the role of law in Russian and Soviet history. It will then consider the legal reforms that arose under Mikhail Gorbachev's program of perestroika. Particular attention will be devoted to judicial reform and the creation of the Constitutional Court. Second, there will be a description of the events that led to the CPSU trial and the trial itself. Finally, there will be an examination of the impact of the Constitutional Court's verdict on: (1) the future of the Constitutional Court as an independent third branch of the government; (2) the Russian political scene; and (3) the …

Carroll V. Commissioner: Narrow Judicial Interpretations Of Internal Revenue Code' § 7502 May Cause Increased Burden On Taxpayers, Nicole D. Stanger
Akron Law Review
In Carroll v. Commissioner, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit upheld the minority viewpoint that the statute repeals the common law presumption of delivery in all cases other than those where the taxpayer used registered or certified mail. Thus, taxpayers who do not send tax documents using registered or certified mail must bear the risk of nondelivery. Critics of this decision contend that the court misinterpreted the I.R.C. As a result of the court's narrow interpretation, taxpayers may suffer substantial tax losses and penalties even when a document is lost through no fault of their own. …
A Critical Race Analysis Of Travel For Transformation: Pedagogy For The Privileged Or Vehicle For Socio-Cultural Transformation?, James Arthur Gambrell
A Critical Race Analysis Of Travel For Transformation: Pedagogy For The Privileged Or Vehicle For Socio-Cultural Transformation?, James Arthur Gambrell
Dissertations and Theses
Transformative learning theory (TLT) describes the process of reframing discriminative, untenable worldviews with a more inclusive, permeable, and reflective epistemology. Although TLT has been around for more than 50 years, few studies empirically engage critical theoretical frameworks to move beyond personal learning to identify the impacts of transformation on society. Through a critical race theory (CRT) framework, this study analyzed how the participants' socio-cultural identities (race, class, gender, sexuality, and heritage language) impacted the transformative learning of eight study-abroad students from a medium-sized, rural Midwestern university. Focusing on the extent to which the participants experienced the elements of transformative …

A Few Slices Of Pie: The Life And Legacy Of Scottie Fitzgerald Smith, Melissa K. Roberson
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
“People who live entirely in the fertility of their imaginations are fascinating, brilliant, and often charming, but they should be sat next to at dinner parties, not lived with,” wrote Frances Scott Fitzgerald Smith, affectionately known to her close friends and family as “Scottie,” in the 1965 introduction to a collection of her father, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, letters to her. With twenty-five years of hindsight chasing her down a highway of family legacy, Scottie offered a brief glimpse into her childhood—a subject she avoided discussing with anyone, including her own children. Even rarer, according to her daughter, Eleanor Lanahan, were …

White Privilege And Affirmative Action, Sylvia A. Law
White Privilege And Affirmative Action, Sylvia A. Law
Akron Law Review
Since 1996, many authoritative voices challenge the legitimacy of affirmative efforts to achieve racial integration. The Supreme Court has struck down many affirmative action programs. The Court has not upheld any affirmative action program since 1989, when, by a 5-4 decision, it approved a narrowly targeted Congressional program to encourage minority ownership of broadcast licences. In 1996, California voters approved Proposition 209, broadly prohibiting any form of affirmative action on the basis of race or gender. In the same year, in the Hopwood decision, the Fifth Circuit held that the University of Texas could not give any consideration to race …
