Modernitas Dan Tragedi: Kritik Dalam Sosiologi Humanistis Zygmunt Bauman, Robertus Robet Jul 2015

Modernitas Dan Tragedi: Kritik Dalam Sosiologi Humanistis Zygmunt Bauman, Robertus Robet

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

There are only two different occurances in modernity: solid modernity and liquid modernity. Solid Modernity operates to create logic of order, categorization and administration. Liquid Modernity works as an illusion of speed and perpetual changes. Mode of categorization in solid modernity has sparked the logic of partiality and nonpartialitity in society. Holocaust -according to Bauman- is an impact of the incapability of the modernity to define ambivalence subject in the mode of categorization. Jews is historical subject that is ambivalence in the eye of regime of categorization. Based on this historical trauma, Bauman propose a new horison in Sociology: Sociology …

Identitas Moral: Rekonstruksi Identitas Keindonesiaan Pada Era Globalisasi Budaya, Leonardus Pandu Hapsoro

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article discusses about the process of identity reconstruction of actor in KISS community in the era of cultural globalization. Using a qualitative method and Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of liquid modernity and moral agency as framework analysis, this study shows how the construction of moral identity process begins with the actor disquite over the state of traditional culture in globalization era. The author argues that the expression of the identity of actor through this social movement will create the role of cultural diversity in the era of cultural globalization and liquid modernity. The author wants to move away from an …

Fundamentals Of Watershed Hydrology, Pamela J. Edwards, Karl W.J. Williard, Jon E. Schoonover Jul 2015

Fundamentals Of Watershed Hydrology, Pamela J. Edwards, Karl W.J. Williard, Jon E. Schoonover

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

This is a primer about hydrology, the science of water. Watersheds are the basic land unit for water resource management and their delineation, importance, and variation are explained and illustrated. The hydrologic cycle and its components (precipitation, evaporation, transpiration, soil water, groundwater, and streamflow) which collectively provide a foundation for how landscapes and water interact are discussed at length. Important hydrologic concepts and methods are described in detail but primarily within the context of forested watersheds since most of the nation's fresh water originates from forest lands. The contents of this paper are designed to provide fundamental hydrologic principles to …

Capturing Optically Important Constituents And Properties In A Marine Biogeochemical And Ecosystem Model, S. Dutkiewicz, A. E. Hickman, O. Jahn, W. W. Gregg, C. B. Mouw, M. J. Follows, C. Mouw Jul 2015

Capturing Optically Important Constituents And Properties In A Marine Biogeochemical And Ecosystem Model, S. Dutkiewicz, A. E. Hickman, O. Jahn, W. W. Gregg, C. B. Mouw, M. J. Follows, C. Mouw

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

We present a numerical model of the ocean that couples a three-stream radiative transfer component with a marine biogeochemical-ecosystem component in a dynamic three-dimensional physical framework. The radiative transfer component resolves the penetration of spectral irradiance as it is absorbed and scattered within the water column. We explicitly include the effect of several optically important water constituents (different phytoplankton functional types; detrital particles; and coloured dissolved organic matter, CDOM). The model is evaluated against in situ-observed and satellite-derived products. In particular we compare to concurrently measured biogeochemical, ecosystem, and optical data along a meridional transect of the Atlantic Ocean. The …

G.H. Hardy: Mathematical Biologist, Hannah Elizabeth Christenson, Stephan Ramon Garcia Jul 2015

G.H. Hardy: Mathematical Biologist, Hannah Elizabeth Christenson, Stephan Ramon Garcia

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Godfrey Harold Hardy (1877-1947), the magnificent analyst who “discovered” the enigmatic Ramanujan and penned A Mathematician’s Apology, is most widely known outside of mathematics for his work in genetics. How did Hardy, described by his colleague C.P. Snow as “the purest of the pure,” become one of the founders of modern genetics? We explore this question in light of Hardy's own ideas about pure and elegant mathematics.

Women's Human Capital And Economic Growth In The Middle East And North Africa, Fatemeh Torabi, Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi Jul 2015

Women's Human Capital And Economic Growth In The Middle East And North Africa, Fatemeh Torabi, Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi

Journal of International Women's Studies

The process of demographic transition has increased the share of the working-age population in Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This situation has created an opportunity for economic growth, called the demographic dividend. Global comparisons show that a favorable age structure has not always resulted in a boost in economic growth. In order to take a full advantage of the MENA’s demographic dividend, it is important to identify different factors contributing to economic growth in this region. Investment in women’s human capital is expected to have important implications for the region’s economic growth and for maximizing the benefits created …

Unveiling The Mysteries Of Aceh, Indonesia: Local And Global Intersections Of Women's Agency, Siti Kusujiarti, Elizabeth W. Miano, Annie L. Pryor, Breanna R. Ryan

Journal of International Women's Studies

Forces of globalization, local culture, and Islam continuously inform one another and dynamically manifest in cultures across the world. Scholars often assume that these influences may have distinct and independent effects. However, we argue that these global forces occur simultaneously and they may contradict or complement each other along a spectrum within Aceh, Indonesia. The manifestations and responses vary depending on the nature of the interactions of global and local factors. This spectrum represents various ways in which women negotiate identity and agency, specifically within the context of the implementation of Shari’ah Law. This research investigates the specific ways in …

Reducing Poverty Among Arab And Muslim Women: The Case Of Arab Women In Israel, Yosef Jabareen Jul 2015

Reducing Poverty Among Arab And Muslim Women: The Case Of Arab Women In Israel, Yosef Jabareen

Journal of International Women's Studies

The international experience suggests that work is the best way of lifting families out of poverty. Thus, this paper assumes that one crucial policy, among many others, aimed at poverty reduction is to increase the women’s participation in the labour market and their access to decent work. This issue is critical among Arab and Muslim women around the world in general and among Arab women in Israel since the participation rate of women in the labour market is quite low and about 55% of the Arab families live under the poverty line. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the reasons …

Hometown Influence: The Impact Of Geography On Statewide Candidate Emergence And Success, Cassie A. Myers Jul 2015

Hometown Influence: The Impact Of Geography On Statewide Candidate Emergence And Success, Cassie A. Myers

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore whether statewide geography influences a candidate’s electoral position. More specifically, what role does geography play in candidate emergence and success on the statewide level? Conventional wisdom holds that geography does matter in candidate emergence and success. Beyond the anecdotal, however, there has been little research in this area. I theorize that general attitudes about rural identity and, conversely, urbanity affect electoral outcomes based upon the population composition of the state. To explore these questions, I created a typology characterizing states as rural or urban, based upon an index capturing rural cultural and …

Patent Law Reform Via The Federal Courts Improvement Act Of 1982: The Transformation Of Patentability Jurisprudence, Timothy J. O'Hearn Jul 2015

Patent Law Reform Via The Federal Courts Improvement Act Of 1982: The Transformation Of Patentability Jurisprudence, Timothy J. O'Hearn

Akron Law Review

The Federal Courts Improvement Act was signed into law on April 2, 1982. Set for an effective date of October 1, 1982, the result of this enactment has been the merger of the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals and the Court of Claims into a new appellate federal court: the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Unlike most appellate courts, the jurisdiction of the new Federal Circuit is determined primarily by subject matter, rather than geography. As a result, this change in the federal judiciary will be felt directly in only a few special legal subject areas. Among …

The Impact Of Marital Quality And Parent-Child Relationships On Peer Relationships At School: A Brazilian Study, Brandon P. Eddy

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the impact that marital quality and parent-child relationships have on peer relationships at school in a Brazilian population. Despite the fact that Brazil is the fifth most populated country in the world, it is very underrepresented in the literature and little information is known about how marital quality and the parent-child bond impact children socially. Sixty-five mothers and their children participated in this study. Marital quality was assessed using the Portuguese version of the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale. The parent-child relationship was assessed using the Parental Bonding Instrument and peer relationships at …

Occurrence Of An Herbicide-Resistant Plant Trait In Agricultural Field Margins, Karla L. Gag, David J. Gibson, Bryan G. Young, Julie M. Young, Joseph L. Matthews, Stephen C. Weller, Robert G. Wilson Jul 2015

Occurrence Of An Herbicide-Resistant Plant Trait In Agricultural Field Margins, Karla L. Gag, David J. Gibson, Bryan G. Young, Julie M. Young, Joseph L. Matthews, Stephen C. Weller, Robert G. Wilson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Agricultural environments allow study of evolutionary change in plants. An example of evolution within agroecological systems is the selection for resistance to the herbicide glyphosate within the weed, Conyza canadensis. Changes in survivorship and reproduction associated with the development of glyphosate resistance (GR) may impact fitness and influence the frequency of occurrence of the GR trait. We hypothesized that site characteristics and history would affect the occurrence of GR C. canadensis in field margins. We surveyed GR occurrence in field margins and asked whether there were correlations between GR occurrence and location, crop rotation, GR crop trait rotation, crop type, …

Ideas Of Poetry Study And The Paradigms Of Chinese Poetry Studies, Shilun Zhong Jul 2015

Ideas Of Poetry Study And The Paradigms Of Chinese Poetry Studies, Shilun Zhong

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

From "the study of poetry and prose" in the pre-Qin period (before 221-207 B.C.) to "the study of The Book of Poetry" in the Han Dynasty and to "the study of poetry" in the Wei and Jin Dynasties, the idea of poetry study in China undergoes constant change from the earliest concept of "expressing will (yanzhi)" in the antiquity. "Expressing will" is "recording events (jishi)" and "writing down the speech (jiyan) ," and fictionalization has no value in the pre-Qin and Han Dynasties. The act of recording contributes the main content of Chinese ancient poetry, while the appropriation of poetry …

Using Microcomputers And P/G% To Predict Court Cases, Stuart S. Nagel Jul 2015

Using Microcomputers And P/G% To Predict Court Cases, Stuart S. Nagel

Akron Law Review

The purpose of this article is to analyze a microcomputer program that can process a set of (1) prior cases, (2) predictive criteria for distinguishing among the cases, and (3) the relations between each prior case and each criterion in order to arrive at an accurate decision rule. Such a rule will enable all the prior cases to be predicted without inconsistencies, and thereby maximize the likelihood of accurately predicting future cases. To illustrate the program, this article uses five substantive fields, including the predicting of cases dealing with religion in the public schools, legislative redistricting, housing discrimination, international law, …

Looking Behind The Scenes: An Assessment Of The Interdependence Of Brazilian Cultural Industries, Amir Borges Ferreira Neto, Fernando Perobelli, Alexandre Rabelo Jul 2015

Looking Behind The Scenes: An Assessment Of The Interdependence Of Brazilian Cultural Industries, Amir Borges Ferreira Neto, Fernando Perobelli, Alexandre Rabelo

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

How important is Brazil’s cultural industries to its economy? We provide an answer to this question by evaluating the interdependence of the cultural activities in the Brazilian production structure and its evolution over the last few years (2005 – 2009). To accomplish this, we disaggregate 13 cultural economic industries in the Brazilian input-output table and calculate several indexes, such as, the production multiplier, linkage indexes, fields of influence and extraction analysis. Results show that the only cultural sector with high links to other sectors in the production structure is Telecommunication, edition and news agencies and that this sector provides the …

Leadership For Sustainability And Peace: Responding To The Wicked Challenges Of The Future, Rian Satterwhite, Whitney Mcintyre Miller, Kate Sheridan

Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"In the past century our understanding of leadership has changed as the contexts in which leadership occurs evolve. Today, constructs of leadership that do not incorporate emergent concepts such as systems thinking no longer match the realities of the world in which it is exercised and the challenges it seeks to address. The challenges we face as a global community have increased in complexity, size, scope, and consequence. As a result of this contextual evolution, our definition of effective leadership is evolving as well."

Financing America's Public Infrastructure: Issues For Local Governments, Shelley C. Vazmina Jul 2015

Financing America's Public Infrastructure: Issues For Local Governments, Shelley C. Vazmina

Akron Law Review

This comment examines the role state and local government financing has played in America's infrastructure crisis. This comment also recognizes that infrastructure financing issues in declining cities differ from infrastructure issues due to population expansion.

Part I is particularly relevant to declining cities. It reviews traditional methods by which state and local government obtain operating revenues, and the use of these revenues for infrastructure. It discusses trends and developments which have made traditional financing schemes less useful for infrastructure.

Part II applies in large part to growing cities. Growth creates demand for new infrastructure while straining existing core infrastructure. Alternative …

Spatiotemporal Correlations Between Water Footprint And Agricultural Inputs: A Case Study Of Maize Production In Northeast China, Peili Duan, Lijie Qin, Yeqiao Wang, Hongshi He

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

To effectively manage water resources in agricultural production, it is necessary to understand the spatiotemporal variation of the water footprint (WF) and the influences of agricultural inputs. Employing spatial autocorrelation analysis and a geographically weighted regression (GWR) model, we explored the spatial variations of the WF and their relationships with agricultural inputs from 1998 to 2012 in Northeast China. The results indicated that: (1) the spatial distribution of WFs for the 36 major maize production prefectures was heterogeneous in Northeast China; (2) a cluster of high WFs was found in southeast Liaoning Province, while a cluster of low WFs was …

Homozygosity has long been associated with rare, often devastating, Mendelian disorders, and Darwin was one of the first to recognize that inbreeding reduces evolutionary fitness. However, the effect of the more distant parental relatedness that is common in modern human populations is less well understood. Genomic data now allow us to investigate the effects of homozygosity on traits of public health importance by observing contiguous homozygous segments (runs of homozygosity), which are inferred to be homozygous along their complete length. Given the low levels of genome-wide homozygosity prevalent in most human populations, information is required on very large numbers of …
