An Indigenous Epistemological Approach To Promote Health Through Effective Knowledge Translation, Selvi Roy, Barbara Campbell Jul 2015

An Indigenous Epistemological Approach To Promote Health Through Effective Knowledge Translation, Selvi Roy, Barbara Campbell

Journal of Indigenous Research

Through indigenous epistemologies a holistic health framework is promoted and indigenous concepts like two-eyed seeing offer critical decolonizing conduits for knowledge translation and enhanced health outcomes. Yet, in health care settings dominance of scientific research-based evidence downplays tacit knowledge. For enhanced health outcomes in indigenous community settings, effective knowledge translation is essential through synthesis of research-based explicit knowledge and tacit know-how adapted to local needs. This paper discusses essential characteristics of effective knowledge translation practices, and presents two examples of best practices of knowledge translation in indigenous contexts.

Connecting General Education Programming With Regionally-Engaged Learning Economies: The Results Of A Community Inquiry And Dialogue, Brandon W. Kliewer, Daniel Cox, Bryan Cooney, Briana Stiehl

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

There is a growing effort to more intentionally situate higher education as an anchor institution within a larger regional, social, political, and economic ecosystem. This paper describes the civic process and outcomes of a community inquiry that considered the relationship between general education programming at comprehensive universities and the trajectory of regional economies. The community inquiry leveraged intergroup dialogue techniques to provide a unique community perspective on potential ways general education can inform engaged learning economies. The result of this community inquiry and dialogue highlight three broad themes that could connect general education programs to engaged learning economies in other …

Using Technology And Phenology To Increase Students’ Observation Skills, Sondra Tokarczyk Jul 2015

Using Technology And Phenology To Increase Students’ Observation Skills, Sondra Tokarczyk

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question addressed in this study was, will the use of technology and phenology increase students’ observation skills? The catalysts for this capstone were research using observation as an everyday skill fundamental to all scientific disciplines, and the importance of teaching children how to observe and document their observations. The capstone describes the process of integrating phenology, knowledge of the five senses, and iPad technology to teach students the importance of observation and its relevance to their everyday lives. The author concludes that: 1) although the collected data did not show a significant increase in observations, students’ observations became …

Restriction Of Tort Remedies And The Constraints Of Due Process: The Right To An Adequate Remedy, Tracy A. Thomas Jul 2015

Restriction Of Tort Remedies And The Constraints Of Due Process: The Right To An Adequate Remedy, Tracy A. Thomas

Akron Law Review

This article identifies another counterbalancing power that checks the legislative ability to restrict tort remedies through tort reform: the due process clauses of both state and federal constitutions. Pursuing this uncharted line of inquiry, this article argues that due process guarantees provide a restraint on the tort remedy stripping provisions that deny plaintiffs their fundamental right to a meaningful remedy...Pulling together the disparate strands of legal rules in existing case law, the article develops a cohesive theory of due process protection for the right to an adequate remedy. State court decisions invalidating tort reform remedy restrictions appear analytically scattered and …

A Mixed Methods Assessment Of The Development, Use, And Educational Effectiveness Of University Campus Sustainability Tours, Ellen R. Barringer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Campus sustainability tours are available at dozens of colleges and universities across the United States. These tours are considered a vital tool in interpreting the environmental and sustainable aspects of a campus to educate the campus community. Minimal quantitative data have been collected regarding their development, use, and effectiveness. In order to develop a dataset regarding the use of campus sustainability tours, surveys and interviews were sent to universities with such tours to discuss use and methods of development. A campus-wide electronic survey was sent to the Western Kentucky University (WKU) main campus community to determine their experiences with the …

A Non-Invasive Fluorescence-Based Oxygen Sensor And Platform For Studying Cell Responses To Metabolic Agents In Real-Time, Koutilya Reddy Buchapudi Jul 2015

A Non-Invasive Fluorescence-Based Oxygen Sensor And Platform For Studying Cell Responses To Metabolic Agents In Real-Time, Koutilya Reddy Buchapudi

Doctoral Dissertations

A fluorescence-based sensor in a transverse flow/stop measurement platform has been developed to determine real-time changes in oxygen consumption rates for cell metabolic studies. The oxygen sensitive fluorophore platinum octaethylporphyrin was embedded in a cellulose acetate matrix and affixed to a fiber optic bundle, which provided for transmission of the excitation and emission wavelengths of the film. The fiber optic bundle was sealed in a sensor head that can be used in standard 24-well plates common to research labs. The utility of the sensor and sensing platform were determined by measuring the changes in oxygen consumption rates of Candida albicans …

Does Esg Investment Enhance Investment Returns, Ca. Hemlata Chelawat, I.V. Trivedi

Business Review

Over the past decade, Environmental, Social and Governance Investment or ESG Investment has become a mainstream investment approach in the investment community around the world, especially in the US and Europe. There is increasing evidence from academic and practitioner research around the world that better ESG performance by companies leads to reduction in risks, improvement in financial performance, higher stock market valuations and hence, enhanced returns for investors investing in stocks of such companies. Hence, incorporating ESG factors can lead to better informed and improved investment decisions. This has led to development of ESG indices and fonds, to enable investors …

Profiles - Ucan’S New Campus Construction Project, Chicago, Illinois, James Hagy, Sahar Nikanjam

Rooftops Project

Funding and constructing a new $41 million facility may be a once-in-a-generation, if ever, event, for many social service not-for-profits. Choosing a site that invests directly in the neighborhood and the people served can have ripple effects far beyond the central purpose of the delivery of services the buildings are designed to support. The Rooftops Project’s Sahar Nikanjam and Professor James Hagy walked the site of UCAN’s new campus construction under way in the Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago.

The Comparative Effects Of Garden Pansies And Monilophytes On Perceived Stress Among College Students, Paige Dunkle Jul 2015

The Comparative Effects Of Garden Pansies And Monilophytes On Perceived Stress Among College Students, Paige Dunkle

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This study is designed to compare how college students rate their sense of stress in the presence of garden pansies or monilophytes (ferns). The objective is to discover more ways in which students can incorporate stress-reducing elements in their workspace. 32 students were placed in a room at a desk supplemented by a single pansy or fern. The students were asked to complete a 10 minute timed survey consisting of demographic questions and statements taken from the State Trait Anxiety Inventory. The hypothesis is that students will report feeling less stressed in the presence of the flowering pansy. Results consisting …

Empirical Evidence For The Scale Dependence Of Biotic Interactions, Jonathan Belmaker, Phoebe Zarnetske, Sara Zonneveld, Sydne Record, Angela L. Strecker, Lydia Beaudrot Jul 2015

Empirical Evidence For The Scale Dependence Of Biotic Interactions, Jonathan Belmaker, Phoebe Zarnetske, Sara Zonneveld, Sydne Record, Angela L. Strecker, Lydia Beaudrot

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Aim: Although it is recognized that ecological patterns are scale dependent, the exact scales over which specific ecological processes operate are still a matter of controversy. In particular, understanding the scales over which biotic interactions operate is critical for predicting changes in species distributions in the face of the ongoing biodiversity crisis. It has been hypothesized that biotic interactions operate predominately at fine grains, yet this conjecture has received relatively little empirical scrutiny. We use US woodpeckers as a model system to assess the relative importance of biotic interactions, environmental suitability and geographic proximity to other intraspecific occurrence sites, …

The Art Of Reading Changes: A New Approach To Geographical Landscape, Edwige Motte Jul 2015

The Art Of Reading Changes: A New Approach To Geographical Landscape, Edwige Motte

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

This paper aims to present one aspect of the possible relations between art and science. It does not encompass the whole epistemic range of this relation but focuses on a precise domain: landscape representations (paintings or old photos) and landscape evolution. This produces and intersection between one science (geography) and one domain of arts (plastic arts). More precisely, it deals with scientific field work and artistic field work: which scientific data useful for a scientific geography may be extracted from a painting or a photo which was drawn / taken in the field and which bears all the …

Nature's Keepers?: Constructing Women’S Environmentalism In Green Marketing, Cara Okopny Jul 2015

Nature's Keepers?: Constructing Women’S Environmentalism In Green Marketing, Cara Okopny

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article dissects the current state of discourse in environmental advertising aimed at women, exploring the language and imagery from a feminist perspective. Examining three green advertising campaigns pervasive in women's lifestyle media in recent years, I discover that the gendered origins of environmental discourse in American popular culture continue to impact efforts to sell environmentalism to women. I trace the evolution of definitions of environmentalism in American popular culture, and comment on the debate among feminist environmentalists and media critics over these definitions. I highlight common tropes surrounding environmentalism in green advertising, such as nature's presumed purity and its …
