Choosing Not To Cheat: A Framework To Assess Students’ Rationales For Abiding By Academic Integrity Policies, Kenneth H. Kolb, Kyle C. Longest, Alexa J. Singer Jan 2015

Choosing Not To Cheat: A Framework To Assess Students’ Rationales For Abiding By Academic Integrity Policies, Kenneth H. Kolb, Kyle C. Longest, Alexa J. Singer

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Writing intensive first-year seminars are well situated within the curriculum to teach about issues like cheating and plagiarism. Although most research on academic integrity focuses on how—and how much—students cheat, we take a different approach. We assess whether participation in writing intensive first-year seminars produces measurable changes in students’ rationales for choosing not to cheat. Relying upon data collected via pre and post-test in-depth interviews, we propose a framework to measure these changes that is grounded in students’ accounts of how they negotiated real-life opportunities to cheat on campus. In general, we find that writing intensive first-year seminars produce no …

Applications Of Geopolymer In Civil Engineering: Feasibility Study Of Loess Stabilization And Waste Concrete Recycling, Zhen Liu Jan 2015

Applications Of Geopolymer In Civil Engineering: Feasibility Study Of Loess Stabilization And Waste Concrete Recycling, Zhen Liu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The fast growing population and economic development have resulted in an increasing demand for residential and commercial buildings and infrastructures. However, there are problems identified to fulfill this demand, including that (1) problematic soils need to be treated/improved before the construction of building and infrastructures; (2) the Portland cement industry, which is used for concrete production and as the conventional soil stabilizer, is not environment friendly; (3) qualified natural aggregates for concrete production are being depleted; and (4) great amount of construction & demolition waste (C&D waste) is being produced every year. This means that green materials and recycling the …

Critical Perspectives On Police, Policing, And Mass Incarceration, Richard Delgado, Jean Stefancic

Articles

Shows that aggressive policing is only one of a number of measures that society uses to control minority groups with whom it is displeased for some reason and that failing to see how the authorities deploy the different measures separately serially or in coordinated fashion is a serious mistake Sketches a new form of policing that is respectful of minority residents and values and provides a framework for reducing excessive incarceration and mitigating some of the cruelties associated with it

Engagement Levels During Implementation Of Co-Teaching Models, Cathy Lee Eschete Jan 2015

Engagement Levels During Implementation Of Co-Teaching Models, Cathy Lee Eschete

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Student engagement in the classroom is a priority for educators and policy makers because disengaged students are more likely to perform poorly in school. Students with disabilities, particularly those with high-incidence disabilities, are a subset of that population of potentially disengaged and definitely poor-performing students. When attending school, they are served increasingly in inclusive, co-taught settings, allowing for inquiry into engagement practices in these instructional arrangements. One purpose of this study was document levels of student engagement for six commonly described co-teaching models implemented in a teacher education course for both special education and general education preservice teacher candidates and …

Alexander Moyzes And His Piano Sonata In The Context Of Slovak Music Between The Wars, Ivan Koska Jan 2015

Alexander Moyzes And His Piano Sonata In The Context Of Slovak Music Between The Wars, Ivan Koska

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this monograph is to introduce to the English-speaking public the Slovak twentieth-century composer Alexander Moyzes and his Piano Sonata in E Minor, Op. 2 (1942), virtually unknown outside Slovakia. The style of the Sonata represents a retreat from earlier, more experimental positions of its author; this shift can be explained by a closer look at historical and aesthetic circumstances surrounding its composition. The first chapter provides an essential biography of the composer with an emphasis on his life and works between 1925 and 1940. The second chapter compares single movements of the Sonata with earlier manuscripts and …

Liberty, Community, And The Free Man In Magna Carta, Benjamin L. Mabry Jan 2015

Liberty, Community, And The Free Man In Magna Carta, Benjamin L. Mabry

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is an overview of the concept of liberty and community in Magna Carta. The central point is the ethical understanding of liberty which Salisbury calls the habitus of liberty. Liberty is an ethical condition of the individual which exists in tension and parallel to the social status of Liber Homo. This dual characterization of liberty is the causal factor behind the understanding of Magna Carta as both document and event in constitutional history in the related History literature on this topic. Because Liberty is understood in Magna Carta as a habitus, the particular behaviors associated with liberty, referred …

For The Sake Of St. Cecilia: Analysis And Re-Orchestration Of Gerald Finzi's For St. Cecilia, Op. 30, Christopher Brent Rosborough Jan 2015

For The Sake Of St. Cecilia: Analysis And Re-Orchestration Of Gerald Finzi's For St. Cecilia, Op. 30, Christopher Brent Rosborough

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Gerald Finzi contributed few pieces to the field of choral music, however the works that have been made available are filled with charm and finesse. Similar to the manner of Duparc, his small output encompasses great depth, beauty, and ingenuity. One such work is For St. Cecilia, Op. 30. Hidden behind the veil of the tradition of English musical festivals, Finzi’s St. Cecilia along with other great works became otherwise lost or discarded in the milieu of nineteenth and twentieth century British composition. Uncovering Finzi’s ode, one might find the size of orchestra and chorus a bit daunting. However, in …

Parental Age At Conception: An Examination Of Risk Factors Related To Autism Severity And Comorbid Psychopathology, Robert D. Rieske Jan 2015

Parental Age At Conception: An Examination Of Risk Factors Related To Autism Severity And Comorbid Psychopathology, Robert D. Rieske

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Many researchers have cited the continuing increase in the prevalence of autism worldwide and have speculated on the potential causes of that increase. One theory that suggests at least a contributory effect is the general trend for parents to have children at later ages. Previous research has begun to examine the relationship between advanced parental age at conception and the incidence of autism and have noted strong relationships between advanced parental age and other developmental disabilities. The purpose of this study was to not only confirm the relationship between advanced parental age and autism risk but to extend that knowledge …

The Erotics Of Race Suicide: The Making Of Whiteness And The Death Drive In The Progressive Era, 1880-1920, Madoka Kishi Jan 2015

The Erotics Of Race Suicide: The Making Of Whiteness And The Death Drive In The Progressive Era, 1880-1920, Madoka Kishi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

"The Erotics of Race Suicide" examines the frequent representation of suicide in Progressive Era American literature in light of a widely proclaimed socio-political concept of the time: “race suicide.” Coined by the sociologist Edward Ross, the term “race suicide” nominates a nativist fear over the racial enervation of indigenous white Americans. Ross and other commentators on race suicide, most notably Theodore Roosevelt, proclaimed that the diminution of the indigenous white Americans was caused by their unwillingness to breed, signaling the self-destructive, “suicidal” tendency of the race. Consequently, through such means as the enactment of immigration restrictions, the reinforcement of anti-miscegenation …

My Choice, My Fraternity, And My Engagement: Experiences Of White Men In Black Greek Letter Organizations (Bglo), Kourtney Prentice Gray

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative study grounded in the theoretical framework and research of Alexander Astin’s Student Engagement Theory, with support from Critical Race Theory and Terrell Strayhorn’s work on Sense of Student Belonging, utilizes a methodological case-study approach with multiple units of analysis. In an effort to understand the choice, ownership, and engagement of White men who hold membership in Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLO), this study utilized the counter-narrative tenant presented and supported by Critical Race Theory to examine the racial identity and engagement of fraternity men from a pluralistic experience. Additionally, the researcher hypothesized that there is a special experience …

Evaluation Of Teacher Ratings To Improve Child Language Screenings In Speech-Language Pathology, Kyomi Dana Gregory Jan 2015

Evaluation Of Teacher Ratings To Improve Child Language Screenings In Speech-Language Pathology, Kyomi Dana Gregory

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of teacher ratings for screening children’s language skills. Teacher ratings were measured through the use of two tools, the Children’s Communication Checklist-2 (CCC-2; Bishop, 2006) and the Teacher Rating of Oral Language and Literacy (TROLL; Dickinson, McCabe, & Sprague, 2001). The data for this study were from 77 kindergarteners who lived in rural Louisiana and spoke a non-mainstream dialect of English; 51 were classified as typically developing and 26 as presenting with Specific Language Impairment. Convergent validity was examined by comparing the two teacher rating tools to each other and …

Real-Time Shadows For Gigapixel Displacement Maps, Kevin Anthony Cherry Jan 2015

Real-Time Shadows For Gigapixel Displacement Maps, Kevin Anthony Cherry

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Shadows portray helpful information in scenes. From a scientific visualization standpoint, they help to add data without unnecessary clutter. In video games they add realism and depth. In common graphics pipelines, due to the independent and parallel rendering of geometric primitives, shadows are difficult to achieve. Objects require knowledge of each other and therefore multiple renders are needed to collect the necessary data. The collection of this data comes with its own set of trade offs. Our research involves adding shadows into a lunar rendering framework developed by Dr. Robert Kooima. The NASA-collected data contains a multi-gigapixel displacement map describing …

Manchester Snow Emergency Analysis: Who Is Being Towed From Where And Why, Michael James Pelletier Jan 2015

Manchester Snow Emergency Analysis: Who Is Being Towed From Where And Why, Michael James Pelletier

Master's Theses and Capstones

This Capstone paper analyzes the City of Manchester, New Hampshire’s policy and community impacts when their Towing Snow Emergency procedures are implemented. While the public expects their city streets and sidewalks to be cleared of snow during and following snow storms, the process to do so in the city streets requires vehicles to be re-located from parking on the street. This process requires privately owned vehicles to be ticketed or towed during the worst of weather during the winter. Although the city administration has attempted to avoid having to tow vehicles as the report shows, there is still a historical …

Using Shock Index As A Predictor Of Icu Readmission: A Quality Iimprovement Project, Melissa Sykes

Master's Theses and Capstones

Background: Adverse events will occur in one-third of patients discharged from the intensivecare unit (ICU) and evidence shows that ICU readmissions increase a patient’s length of stay,
mortality, hospital costs, and nosocomial infections, as well as decrease long-term survival.Specific predictive factors that will accurately predict which patients are at risk of adverseevents requiring readmission are needed.Aim: The specific aim of this project was to identify if shock index (SI) values higher than 0.7at the time of transfer from the ICU are a useful predictor of ICU readmission. Methods: Using the Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) framework, a retrospective chart review wasperformed …

Improving Emergency Response In The Outpatient Clinic Setting, Matte Horton Jan 2015

Improving Emergency Response In The Outpatient Clinic Setting, Matte Horton

Master's Theses and Capstones

Background: Effective triage, assessment, and activation of necessary systems in emergent situations of clinical instability is vital in reducing morbidity and mortality of patients in any clinical setting. When medical emergencies occur outside of the hospital, organized and expedited transfer to a higher level of care reduces the potential for adverse events, lasting deficits, and patient death. Aim: The aim of this project was to identify weaknesses in the emergency response system in the community-based outpatient clinic setting and to propose solutions. Methods: The “Swiss Cheese” theoretical framework was used to do a root cause analysis of two clinical scenarios. …

Engaging Patients To Improve Documentation Of Oral Intake On A Cardiac Telemetry Unit: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Timiny A. Mosher

Master's Theses and Capstones

Background Information
It is important for patients with heart failure to have awareness of their intake & output to effectively manage their disease. There is evidence that tracking intake & output is a component of missed nursing care resulting in discrepancies between the actual patient intake and what is documented in the patient’s electronic health record (EHR).

Aim

The aim of this quality improvement project was to engage patients in monitoring their intake by using teach-back and patient engagement techniques to track their own oral fluid intake throughout the day.

Methods
The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model was used as the framework …

School of Medicine Publications

Background

Although case-control approaches are beginning to disentangle schizophrenia’s complex polygenic burden, other methods will likely be necessary to fully identify and characterize risk genes. Endophenotypes, traits genetically correlated with an illness, can help characterize the impact of risk genes by providing genetically relevant traits that are more tractable than the behavioral symptoms that classify mental illness. Here we present an analytic approach for discovering and empirically validating endophenotypes in extended pedigrees with very few affected individuals. Our approach indexes each family member’s risk as a function of shared genetic kinship with an affected individual, often referred to as the …
