The Influence Of Engineering Design Considerations On Species Recruitment And Succession On Coastal Defence Structures, Juliette Elizabeth Jackson Jan 2015

The Influence Of Engineering Design Considerations On Species Recruitment And Succession On Coastal Defence Structures, Juliette Elizabeth Jackson

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Engineering design considerations of artificial coastal structures were tested to resemble as far as possible the nearest natural equivalent habitat, ecologically valuable rocky shores, as a potential management option. Coastal areas around the world attract urbanisation but these transitional areas between sea and land are inherently vulnerable to risk of flooding and erosion. Thus hard structures are often built in sensitive coastal environments to defend assets such as property and infrastructure (roads, railways, ports) against rising and stormy seas. The design, construction and maintenance of hard defences should wherever possible incorporate ecological considerations to enhance biodiversity, including maintaining or restoring …

Using Marxan And Marxan With Zones To Support Marine Planning, Frances Peckett Jan 2015

Using Marxan And Marxan With Zones To Support Marine Planning, Frances Peckett

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

With the growth in human pressures on the marine environment and the increase in competition for space and resources there has been recognition by many governments of the need to use the marine environment sustainably and allow for its acceptable allocation for each sector. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the use of Marxan and Marxan with Zones as practical tools to enable the production of marine plans that integrate environmental and socioeconomic data and to suggest best practice in the types of data used. In this thesis three key aspects of data type and integration were identified …

Flaring And Pollution Detection In The Niger Delta Using Remote Sensing, Barnabas Ojo Morakinyo Jan 2015

Flaring And Pollution Detection In The Niger Delta Using Remote Sensing, Barnabas Ojo Morakinyo

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Abstract Through the Global Gas Flaring Reduction (GGFR) initiative a substantial amount of effort and international attention has been focused on the reduction of gas flaring since 2002 (Elvidge et al., 2009). Nigeria is rated as the second country in the world for gas flaring, after Russia. In an attempt to reduce and eliminate gas flaring the federal government of Nigeria has implemented a number of gas flaring reduction projects, but poor governmental regulatory policies have been mostly unsuccessful in phasing it out. This study examines the effects of pollution from gas flaring using multiple satellite based sensors (Landsat 5 …

Reproducing ‘Geopolitics’ – National Identity Representations Of Foreign Affairs In Moldova, Roxana Adina Huma Jan 2015

Reproducing ‘Geopolitics’ – National Identity Representations Of Foreign Affairs In Moldova, Roxana Adina Huma

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Breaking away from the positivist trend dominating the literature on Moldova’s foreign relations, this thesis analyses the means through which national identity discourses impact on Moldovan societal representation of foreign policy. It contends that national identity perpetuates a Cold War inspired view of foreign affairs. This construction is defined by two main elements, the representation of the civilizational and geopolitical cleavage between East and West and the lack of agency awarded to the Moldovan self. This is achieved through an in-depth study of the national identity debate in Moldova. It focuses on both the two main national identity discourses in …

John Hoyland: The Making And Sustaining Of A Career - 1960-82, Christopher Anthony Davies Jan 2015

John Hoyland: The Making And Sustaining Of A Career - 1960-82, Christopher Anthony Davies

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The thesis explores the making and sustaining of the career of the English abstract artist, John Hoyland from his inclusion in the seminal Situation exhibition of 1960 to his winning the John Moores First (Purchase Prize) in 1982. It investigates the institutional and critical contexts that supported Hoyland’s rise to prominence in the 1960s and situates him within the art world of the time: its galleries, exhibitions, advocates, dealers, critics, patrons and collectors (public and private). It notes the improvements to the art infrastructure in the United Kingdom and assesses whether these improvements had any impact on Hoyland’s career. Careful …

Walk Like An Egyptian: Belly Dance Past And Present Practice In England, Siouxsie Cooper Jan 2015

Walk Like An Egyptian: Belly Dance Past And Present Practice In England, Siouxsie Cooper

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

How Belly Dance practitioners in England construct a sense of self-identity, social-identity and identity-in-practice in a border-crossing Belly Dance ethnoscape is of interest for this research project. What kinds of identities-in-practice do Belly Dancers in England construct in order to authenticate their performance? By applying social theories of education and identity formation, in particular Holland et al’s “figured worlds” (2001), it is possible to critically frame the development of a practitioner’s Belly Dance identity over a period of time. The research presents the case that Belly Dance in England has an identifiable past and present practice, one that continually wrestles …

The Legal Regimes Governing Marine Renewable Energy In England And Wales, Victoria Jane Hamlyn Jan 2015

The Legal Regimes Governing Marine Renewable Energy In England And Wales, Victoria Jane Hamlyn

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis involves an examination of the main international, regional and national legal regimes regulating marine renewable energy in England and Wales. Deriving from a complex patchwork of law and policy, developments have ensued in the absence of a distinct governing ‘legal regime’ and within a number of competing paradigms. This original synthesis attempts to identify lacunae, conflicts and connections within and between the span of legal genres that MRE evokes. Against a backdrop of climate change mitigation, the key findings show that despite the presence of political will for offshore renewable energies, MRE development faces a number of legal …

The Go-Between. The Film Archive As A Mediator Between Copyright And Film Historiography., Claudy Wilhelmina Elisabeth Op Den Kamp Jan 2015

The Go-Between. The Film Archive As A Mediator Between Copyright And Film Historiography., Claudy Wilhelmina Elisabeth Op Den Kamp

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Based on the premise that only in being accessible can the film reach its potential for history making, the contribution of the film archive to a particular film historical narrative is fragmented: the films that are extant are not necessarily available and the ones that are available are not necessarily publicly accessible. The contention of the thesis is that ‘doing’ film history in the context of the film archive should always be seen in light of an ever increasingly narrowing fragmentation of accessible material that takes place in the film archive. What is new about the contribution of this thesis …

Rex Whistler (1905-1944) Patronage And Artistic Identity, Nikki Frater Jan 2015

Rex Whistler (1905-1944) Patronage And Artistic Identity, Nikki Frater

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis explores the life and work of Rex Whistler, from his first commissions whilst at the Slade up until the time he enlisted for active service in World War Two. His death in that conflict meant that this was a career that lasted barely twenty years; however it comprised a large range of creative endeavours. Although all these facets of Whistler’s career are touched upon, the main focus is on his work in murals and the fields of advertising and commercial design. The thesis goes beyond the remit of a purely biographical stance and places Whistler’s career in context …

Devising Solo Performance: A Practitioner’S Enquiry, Misri Dey Jan 2015

Devising Solo Performance: A Practitioner’S Enquiry, Misri Dey

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This research explores the validity and value of ‘solo devising’ as a means for specifying a category of theatre-making that has been little discussed, compared to group devising, in existing literature on devising and postdramatic theatre. Primary source material was obtained through carrying out extended interviews with five experienced British theatre practitioners who have made work that could be described as solo devised performance: Tim Etchells, Bobby Baker, Mike Pearson, Nigel Charnock and Wendy Houstoun. In analysing these interviews, referred to in detail but not reproduced in full, the enquiry draws on a range of writings, including Oddey, Heddon, Harvie, …

Every Frame Counts: Creative Practice And Gender In Direct Animation, Kayla Parker Jan 2015

Every Frame Counts: Creative Practice And Gender In Direct Animation, Kayla Parker

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis interrogates the ways in which the body-centred practices of women film artists embrace the materiality of direct animation in order to foreground gendered, subjective positions. Through the researcher's own creative practice, it investigates how this mode of film-making, in which the artist works through physical engagement with the film materials and the material processes of film-making, might be understood as feminine and/or feminist. Direct animation foregrounds touch as the primary sense. Its practices are process-based and highly experimental, because images are made through the agency of the body operating within restrictive parameters, making results difficult to predict or …

A Comparative Study Of The Obligation Of Due Diligence To Provide A Seaworthy Vessel Under The Hague/Hague-Visby Rules And The Rotterdam Rules, Talal Aladwani

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In the last 100 years, vast technological and communicational changes have occurred in all modes of transportation, with momentous changes to the carriage of cargo by sea. In response, the shipping industry has attempted to codify, at the international level, regulations and standards with the aim of providing a safe environment at sea. In turn, the shipping industry’s regulations impact upon the way sea carriage is performed. The obligation of seaworthiness is no exception. The requisite standard of seaworthiness is also, to a limited extent, governed by the shipping indsutry’s regulations. It is notable that the shipping industry’s regulations cannot …

The Role Of Literary Texts In Tourism Destination Management, Place Creation And Marketing: A Case Study On Concarneau In Finistère, Brittany, And The Simenon Novel, The Yellow Dog, Charles Mansfield

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This doctoral thesis approaches literary tourism initially from an historical perspective in order to define the phenomenon through a review of the existing academic literature in the field. The forms of literary tourism are analysed to provide a typology and from this the value of literary tourism is explained both from the visitor's point of view and the destination manager's. Current theories underpinning the existing literature on literary tourism, including Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital are reviewed. To extend the current state of research and to answer the research questions a case study of successful urban literary tourism is identified, …

Machine Performers: Agents In A Multiple Ontological State, Louis-Philippe Demers Jan 2015

Machine Performers: Agents In A Multiple Ontological State, Louis-Philippe Demers

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In this thesis, the author explores and develops new attributes for machine performers and merges the trans-disciplinary fields of the performing arts and artificial intelligence. The main aim is to redefine the term “embodiment” for robots on the stage and to demonstrate that this term requires broadening in various fields of research. This redefining has required a multifaceted theoretical analysis of embodiment in the field of artificial intelligence (e.g. the uncanny valley), as well as the construction of new robots for the stage by the author. It is hoped that these practical experimental examples will generate more research by others …

The Construction Of National Identity In Post-1918 Poland, Bartosz Lyszkiewicz Jan 2015

The Construction Of National Identity In Post-1918 Poland, Bartosz Lyszkiewicz

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis analyses the construction of the modern national identity in Poland following the state’s creation in 1918. Its central aim is to argue that although much of Poland’s national identity was, in fact, the product of the revolutionary eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in the twentieth century, ethnocultural foundations proved essential in the process of nation building. In order to offer a novel approach to this issue this thesis will evaluate the programmes of the émigré organizations and political parties to demonstrate the role of the two national currents: ethnic/organic and civic/territorial, which developed during the nineteenth century and shaped …

Distributions Of Glycine Betaine And The Methylamines In Coastal Waters: Analytical Developments And A Seasonal Study, Charlotte Cree Jan 2015

Distributions Of Glycine Betaine And The Methylamines In Coastal Waters: Analytical Developments And A Seasonal Study, Charlotte Cree

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

A novel technique comprising solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography has been developed to analyse the three methylamines (monomethylamine, dimethylamine and trimethylamine) at the concentrations expected in seawater. The volatility of the methylamines was exploited and allowed the headspace pre-concentration and gas chromatographic separation of the analytes. This method achieved limits of detection of 0.43 nmol dm-3, 2.50 nmol dm-3 and 0.37 nmol dm-3 for monomethylamine, dimethylamine and trimethylamine, respectively, which are lower than any previously reported for seawater. This technique was applied to natural samples collected from the Western English Channel (WEC) and the methylamines were successfully quantified. A …

Fire Performance Of Cold-Formed Steel Sections, Shanshan Cheng Jan 2015

Fire Performance Of Cold-Formed Steel Sections, Shanshan Cheng

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Thin-walled cold-formed steel (CFS) has exhibited inherent structural and architectural advantages over other constructional materials, for example, high strength-to-weight ratio, ease of fabrication, economy in transportation and the flexibility of sectional profiles, which make CFS ideal for modern residential and industrial buildings. They have been increasingly used as purlins as the intermediate members in a roof system, or load-bearing components in low- and mid-rise buildings. However, using CFS members in building structures has been facing challenges due to the lack of knowledge to the fire performance of CFS at elevated temperatures and the lack of fire design guidelines. Among all …

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) in the form of wave, tidal and offshore wind has emerged as a potentially major component of strategies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and combat climate change. One factor influencing the implementation of MRE technologies is acceptance by people living near developments. This study investigated (i) attitudes towards MRE in small island communities as likely host communities for MRE developments; (ii) the underlying factors and values shaping these attitudes; (iii) how communities viewed MRE with regard to their place attachments; (iv) the inclusion of communities attitudes into MRE decision-making; and (v) contributions to policy and practice …

Natural Strange Beatitudes: Geoffrey Hill's The Orchards Of Syon, Poetic Oxymoron And Post-Secular Poetics And An Atheist's Prayer-Book, Jonathan Wooding Jan 2015

Natural Strange Beatitudes: Geoffrey Hill's The Orchards Of Syon, Poetic Oxymoron And Post-Secular Poetics And An Atheist's Prayer-Book, Jonathan Wooding

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Geoffrey Hill’s The Orchards of Syon (2002) occupies a contradictory position in twenty-first century poetry in being a major religious work in a post-religious age. Contemporary secular and atheistic insistence on the fundamentally crafted and flawed nature of religious faith has led Hill not to the abandoning of religious vision, but to a theologically disciplined approach to syntax, grammar and etymology. This dissertation examines Hill’s claim to a poetics of agnostic faith that mediate his alienation from a cynical and debased Anglophone contemporaneity. The oxymoronic nature of a faith co-existent with existential loss is the primary focus. The semantic distinction …

Ecological Understanding Through Transdisciplinary Art And Participatory Biology, Brandon Ballengée Jan 2015

Ecological Understanding Through Transdisciplinary Art And Participatory Biology, Brandon Ballengée

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In this study evidence is presented that suggests transdisciplinary art practices and participatory biology programs may successfully increase public understanding of ecological phenomenon. As today’s environmental issues are often complex and large-scale, finding effective strategies that encourage public awareness and stewardship are paramount for long-term conservation of species and ecosystems. Although artists and biologists tend to stay confined to their professional boundaries, and their discourses largely remain inaccessible to larger audiences, arguments here are presented for a combined approach, which may disseminate knowledge about ecology to non-specialists through novel art-science participatory research and exhibitions. Moreover, historically several scientists utilized varied …

The Effectiveness Of The Church Of England Guidance For Assessing Significance, Bridget Gillard Jan 2015

The Effectiveness Of The Church Of England Guidance For Assessing Significance, Bridget Gillard

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The thesis aims to determine the effectiveness of the Church of England’s (C. of E.) guidance for writing statements of significance. It examines the adoption of ‘significance’ as a system for deciding what elements of the historic environment should be conserved and in what way. The growing influence of significance-theory will be examined along with the emerging practice of defining significance through the identification of multiple values. The question of who should be involved in the process of identifying significance will also be discussed in the context of the increasing importance of public engagement both politically in the U.K. and …

Making The Past: The Concepts Of Literary History And Literary Tradition In The Works Of Thomas Gray, Raheem Rashid Mnayit Albu-Mohammed Jan 2015

Making The Past: The Concepts Of Literary History And Literary Tradition In The Works Of Thomas Gray, Raheem Rashid Mnayit Albu-Mohammed

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This study explores Thomas Gray’s concepts of literary history, tradition, and the past. It proffers critical examinations of Gray’s literary and historical thoughts, illustrating the extent of the complexity of the mid‐century cultural and intellectual climate in which Gray and his contemporaries were writing. It shows the aesthetic, cultural, and political dimensions of canonicity in the course of examining the ideological motivation behind Gray’s literary history. Though much of Gray’s poetry is private and written for a narrow literary circle, his literary history seems engaged with issues of public concerns. Gray’s literary history must not be understood as a mere …

Petit Trianon And Marie Antoinette: Representation, Interpretation, Perception, Denise Cristina Ioana Maior-Barron

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This interdisciplinary thesis belongs to Marie Antoinette studies. The contemporary dissonant commodification of the controversial historical character of the last Queen of France, detected at her former home, Petit Trianon, drives the course of the thesis research. Considering the complexity and controversy of the subject, the thesis seeks to make a contribution to extant scholarship by clarifying important modern history issues through a fresh approach: by using art history as an indicator in assessing the historical truth of the narrative of Petit Trianon, the residence identified as home to the last Queen of France. The thesis examines Petit Trianon and …

The objective has been to discover whether the ‘Pudu Jail’s Graffiti’, has a distinct visual narrative(s) compared with other prison graffiti research, concluding that its qualities lies in the complexity of visual cultures brought within the space of the prison cells. The prison graffiti retrieved from this portfolio has been analysed through a process of qualitative review; in order to find its …

An Artistic Equivalence Of My Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tom Baugh Jan 2015

An Artistic Equivalence Of My Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tom Baugh

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

An Artistic Equivalence of my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Thomas Baugh Abstract In this research I explore my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and make manifest equivalent experiences of it through art practice. I investigate my OCD through artistic enactments and test my equivalence of the framework obsessioncompulsion using installation art – an equivalence, which I suggest is a relationship between my embodied perception and my memory. My interpretation of equivalence contains characteristics that arguably align with common emotions of control and doubt, inflated sense of responsibility and fear of disaster, which, I suggest are accessible to an audience other than myself. …

Propagated Image Segmentation Using Edge-Weighted Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation Based Methods, Youjie Zhou Jan 2015

Propagated Image Segmentation Using Edge-Weighted Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation Based Methods, Youjie Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Propagated image segmentation is the problem of utilizing the existing segmentation of an image for obtaining a new segmentation of, either a neighboring image in a sequence, or the same image but in different scales. We name these two cases as the inter-image propagation and the intra-image propagation respectively. The inter-image propagation is particularly important to material science, where efficient and accurate segmentation of a sequence of 2D serial-sectioned images of 3D material samples is an essential step to understand the underlying micro-structure and related physical properties. For natural images with objects in different scales, the intra-image propagation, where segmentations …

Creating The Self: Women Artists In Twentieth-Century Fiction, Bethany Dailey Tisdale Jan 2015

Creating The Self: Women Artists In Twentieth-Century Fiction, Bethany Dailey Tisdale

Theses and Dissertations

In novels of artistic development (or künstlerromane) by women in the early twentieth-century, becoming an artist is intimately tied to becoming recognized as an individual. It would appear that an era of rapid change and expanding opportunities for women would result in affirmative narratives of women’s artistry, but studying texts by Edith Wharton, Anzia Yezierska, Zelda Fitzgerald, and Dawn Powell shows that stringent gender roles can still keep women from realizing artist success.

In Wharton’s The House of Mirth, Lily Bart ruins her prospects on the marriage market by striving for freedom and aesthetic pleasure. Those desires cannot be reconciled …
