Wireless Interactive Sonification Of Large Water Waves To Demonstrate The Facilities Of A Large-Scale Research Wave Tank, Alexis Kirke, Samuel Freeman, Eduardo Reck Miranda Jan 2015

Wireless Interactive Sonification Of Large Water Waves To Demonstrate The Facilities Of A Large-Scale Research Wave Tank, Alexis Kirke, Samuel Freeman, Eduardo Reck Miranda

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Interactive sonification can provide a platform for demonstration and education as well as for monitoring and investigation. We present a system designed to demonstrate the facilities of the UK's most advanced large-scale research wave tank. The interactive sonification of water waves in the “ocean basin” wave tank at Plymouth University consisted of a number of elements: generation of ocean waves, acquisition and sonification of ocean-wave measurement data, and gesture-controlled pitch and amplitude of sonifications. The generated water waves were linked in real time to sonic features via depth monitors and motion tracking of a floating buoy. Types of water-wave patterns, …

The Effectiveness Of Psychosocial Intervention For Individuals With Cleft Lip And/Or Palate., Alyson Norman, Martin Persson, Nicola Stock, Nichola Rumsey, Jonathan Sandy, Andrea Waylen, Zoe Edwards, Vanessa Hammond, Lucy Partridge, Andy Ness Jan 2015

The Effectiveness Of Psychosocial Intervention For Individuals With Cleft Lip And/Or Palate., Alyson Norman, Martin Persson, Nicola Stock, Nichola Rumsey, Jonathan Sandy, Andrea Waylen, Zoe Edwards, Vanessa Hammond, Lucy Partridge, Andy Ness

School of Psychology

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to assess the effectiveness of different psychological interventions for children and adults with cleft lip and/or palate and their parents. DESIGN: We searched six databases including MEDLINE and EMBASE to June 2013 and checked bibliographies. We included research that evaluated any psychological intervention in studies in which at least 90% of the participants had cleft lip and/or palate or were parents of those with cleft lip and/or palate. Studies containing less than 90% were excluded unless they reported results separately for those with cleft lip and/or palate, or raw data were available upon …

Call Me Alix, Not Elix: Vowels Are More Important Than Consonants In Own-Name Recognition At 5 Months., Camillia Bouchon, Caroline Floccia, Thibaut Fux, Martine Adda-Decker, Thierry Nazzi Jan 2015

Call Me Alix, Not Elix: Vowels Are More Important Than Consonants In Own-Name Recognition At 5 Months., Camillia Bouchon, Caroline Floccia, Thibaut Fux, Martine Adda-Decker, Thierry Nazzi

Consonants and vowels differ acoustically and articulatorily, but also functionally: Consonants are more relevant for lexical processing, and vowels for prosodic/syntactic processing. These functional biases could be powerful bootstrapping mechanisms for learning language, but their developmental origin remains unclear. The relative importance of consonants and vowels at the onset of lexical acquisition was assessed in French-learning 5-month-olds by testing sensitivity to minimal phonetic changes in their own name. Infants' reactions to mispronunciations revealed sensitivity to vowel but not consonant changes. Vowels were also more salient (on duration and intensity) but less distinct (on spectrally based measures) than consonants. Lastly, vowel …

The Development And Evaluation Of A Dynamic Elastomeric Fabric Orthosis To Support The Management Of Athletic Pelvic/Groin Injury, Leanne Sawle Jan 2015

The Development And Evaluation Of A Dynamic Elastomeric Fabric Orthosis To Support The Management Of Athletic Pelvic/Groin Injury, Leanne Sawle

School of Health Professions Theses

Athletic pelvic / groin injuries can be difficult to define, diagnose and therefore manage. These injuries are often the result of multifactorial dysfunction, making them susceptible to becoming chronic. Transverse pelvic belts have shown effectiveness in reducing pain and improving function in athletes with pelvic / groin pain, but there may be better alternatives. Exploring different pelvic belt configurations with athletes with pelvic / groin pain confirmed the role of a transverse belt but also found that diagonal belts produced significantly (<0.05) greater effects upon clinical measures of pain and function. Dynamic elastomeric fabric orthoses (DEFOs) are Lycra®-based orthoses theorised as providing stability and enhancing proprioception. A DEFO was designed to apply diagonal force to the pelvic girdle and mimic transverse belt application. In a series of single case studies the DEFO was found to have beneficial effects upon pain and / or function in selected athletes with pelvic / groin pain. Athletes’ subjective reports suggested that balance and power may have also been positively influenced. Further work exploring appropriate measures of athletic balance led to the investigation of the intra-rater reliability of a functional measure; the multiple single-leg hop-stabilisation test. Good to excellent reliability (ICC = 0.85; CI 0.61-0.90) confirmed this measure as being reliable for use in a future study, and highlighted relationships with other factors such as age and training status. The findings of a pilot RCT indicated that with minor revisions this protocol could be effectively implemented in informing a future RCT. Findings also indicated that the DEFO led to moderate to large effect sizes on clinical measures (d = 0.6-1.1) of active straight leg raise and squeeze test force, and negligible to small effects on measures of power and functional balance (d = 0.1-0.3). This thesis therefore outlines the development and initial evaluation of a novel DEFO for supporting the management of athletic pelvic / groin injury. Further work is required to undertake a fully powered RCT, and to explore the mechanistic action of this DEFO.

Access to safe drinking water plays a crucial role in the overall social and economic development of a community. Unsafe water delivered to household taps increases the risks of waterborne diseases and threatens population health. Consumers can adopt a number of averting behaviors such as filtering or boiling their water. While these approaches are effective in reducing the likelihood of contracting a waterborne disease, not all households treat their water. Given this, it is important to develop a better understanding of factors that influence water treatment behavior. In this paper, we examine determinants of water treatment behavior using survey data …

Elements That Integrate The World Vision Of The Otomí Tribe: The Trinitarian Within The Otomí Tribes, Luis Perez-Lugo Jan 2015

Elements That Integrate The World Vision Of The Otomí Tribe: The Trinitarian Within The Otomí Tribes, Luis Perez-Lugo

Community Research Education and Academic Retention Initiative

The pretext when approaching this subject is to present new elements that show the otomí world vision based in field data and the revision of what has been written. Mythology and the language itself contributed elements to demonstrate the otomíes are guided by a trinity notion which is present within their universe; it is a new way to approach the indigenous world (above all the otomí tribes) in a scientific manner. This work has the intention of presenting new elements of understanding the vision of the otomí world; the reflections are based on camp dates and specialists, who have written …

A Sentencing Commission For The Administrative State?, Max J. Minzner Jan 2015

A Sentencing Commission For The Administrative State?, Max J. Minzner

Faculty Scholarship

Since the 1980s, oversight of punishment in the federal criminal system has been centralized. A single body, the Sentencing Commission, regulates criminal punishment through the Sentencing Guidelines. The Guidelines are designed to bring consistency and transparency to criminal punishment, but come with the inevitable cost of a loss of case-by-case judicial discretion. In contrast, punishment in the federal administrative state is almost completely decentralized. No single body oversees agency punishment practices. The administrative model makes the opposite choice of the criminal model. It favors individualized punishment determinations over the benefits of consistency and transparency. In this Essay, I consider the …
