Temporal Logic Extension For Self-Referring, Nonexistence, Multiple Recurrence, And Anterior Past Events, Şadi̇ Evren Şeker
Temporal Logic Extension For Self-Referring, Nonexistence, Multiple Recurrence, And Anterior Past Events, Şadi̇ Evren Şeker
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This study focuses on the possible extensions of current temporal logics. In this study, 4 extensions are proposed: self-referring events, nonexisting events, multiple recurrence of events, and an improvement on anterior past events. Each of these extensions is on a different level of temporal logics. The main motivation behind the extensions is the temporal analysis of Turkish. Similar to temporal logic studies built on other natural languages, like French, Ukrainian, Italian, Korean, English, or Romanian, this is the first time that the Turkish language has been deeply questioned in the sense of computable temporal logic using the view of a …

Caveat Cloudster: Why Traditional Common And Civil Property Law Should Apply To Virtual Property And How It Will Change The Legal Realities Of The Internet, Matthew Quadrini
Caveat Cloudster: Why Traditional Common And Civil Property Law Should Apply To Virtual Property And How It Will Change The Legal Realities Of The Internet, Matthew Quadrini
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
With the increasing trade in and production of virtual content (e-books, digital music, files stored in the cloud, etc.) and an ever growing use of virtual real estate (email accounts, online storefronts, URLs, etc.) in commercial transactions, the legal interest users hold in their virtual property will determine whether all have the power to prosper in this new, multi-billion-dollar virtual economy. In the cloud, service providers can grant or destroy scores of virtual property with the click of a button and without compensation—a power not even available to the Canadian government. As it stands, the legal regime governing virtual property …

Application Of "Shallow-Water" Numerical Models For Hazard Assessment Of Volcanic Flows: The Case Of Titan2d And Turrialba Volcano (Costa Rica), Sylvain J. Charbonnier, José L. Palma, Sarah Ogburn
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
This paper introduces Titan2D, a depth averaged model of an incompressible Coulomb continuum for "shallow water" granular flows. Titan2D has been used successfully at many volcanoes to predict inundation by block-and-ash flows and debris avalanches. It can be run as a stand-alone program or through Vhub, a cyber-infrastructure platform. Practical considerations of choosing appropriate user inputs and the basics of running the model are discussed herein. Both synthetic and natural terrain examples are presented, including simulations of a block-and-ash flow generated from the gravitational collapse of a synthetic dome at Turrialba volcano (Costa Rica). These results suggest that the model …

Revising By Numbers: Promoting Student Revision Through Accumulated Points, Mark Mcbeth
Revising By Numbers: Promoting Student Revision Through Accumulated Points, Mark Mcbeth
Journal of Response to Writing
In an effort to rethink the evaluation of student writing with the ultimate goal of convincing novice writers that rewriting predicates as well as presupposes the act of writing, I describe a point-accrual grading system where students accumulate points with redrafted submissions during a semester. This approach to evaluation offers students more autonomy in controlling their “earned” grade as well as incentivizes their investments in the revision process. In contrast to the normative percentages approach to grading, this point-accrual system not only gives students a less ambivalent form of grading but also moves them past surface-level revision and into rhetorical …

Book Review: Revision Decisions: Talk Through Sentences And Beyond, Jennifer Dunn
The Utah English Journal
As an English teacher teaching writing, I sometimes struggle to help my students understand the importance of revising--of making changes and not just sticking with the first thing they write.
In Revision Decisions Jeff Anderson- a grammar guru-and Deborah Dean-a strong champion and voice for strategic writing, teamed together to create a book that even the most novice of teachers can use to instruct their students on how to make revisions to writing through a variety of grammar strategies. Their focus is creating a dialogic classroom in order to help students understand that there are multiple ways to write something …
Helping Students To Dare Greatly: Feedback In The English Classroom, Katie Fredrickson
Helping Students To Dare Greatly: Feedback In The English Classroom, Katie Fredrickson
The Utah English Journal
Teaching literature is lovely, but I became an English teacher because I wanted to teach students to write. I wasn't one month into my first year of teaching when I realized how difficult of a task teaching writing can be, even after years of studying writing instruction. Often, I'd pour my passion into developing an assignment. With Katie Wood Ray's (1999) Wondrous Words in mind, I'd find mentor texts for my students to study and use as examples. Following John Bean's (2011) advice in Engaging Ideas, I'd "build process requirements into the assignment, including due dates for drafts" in order …

Literary Docudrama In The Classroom: Teaching With John Hatcher’S The Black Death: A Personal History, Ginger Smoak, Jennifer Mcnabb
Quidditas
John Hatcher’s The Black Death: A Personal History is an unconventional text. It recounts the experience of plague by a single, extraordinarily well-documented village in Suffolk, England: Walsham le Willows. While such a focus perhaps seems fairly standard of case studies or microhistory, Hatcher’s book is more than a narrow treatment of a corner of England. In a preface entitled “The Nature of This Book,” he opens with a discussion of both his journey toward the realization that he wanted to write a markedly different sort of treatment of the Black Death than present in extant scholarship and a rather …

Book Review: Nightbird, Trent Mikesell
The Utah English Journal
A real fairy tale should be every child's dream. However, when the fairy tale world is plagued with a curse, the dream becomes a nightmare. This is the nightmare that Twig faces in Alice Hoffman's novel, Nightbird. Twig should be happy-she lives in an enchanting town with a loving family-but she is one of the unwilling victims of a dark spell and has to deal with its effects while helping to overcome it. Nightbird tells the story of what happens when curses and monsters attempt to destroy a family and town.
Whoso Forbiddeth To Abstain From Meats, Loren Spendlove
Whoso Forbiddeth To Abstain From Meats, Loren Spendlove
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The double negative phrase ”forbiddeth to abstain” as found in D&C 49:18 can be confusing and syntactically challenging for readers. While some have argued that the phrase should be read and understood literally, the Doctrine and Covenants of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints indicates that a literal reading is not correct. In this article I demonstrate that the phrase ” forbid to abstain” was an accepted English idiom prior to and for a few decades following the receipt of D&C 49, even though it has vanished from contemporary usage completely. The meaning of this idiomatic expression was …
Symbiotic Werewolves And Cybernetic Anchoresses: Premodern Posthumans In Medieval Literature, Jennifer K. Cox
Symbiotic Werewolves And Cybernetic Anchoresses: Premodern Posthumans In Medieval Literature, Jennifer K. Cox
Quidditas
This paper examines how individual agency in medieval society might be expanded through posthuman configurations; in so doing, it pushes the boundaries of traditional practices in medieval research to include more contemporary ideas. Although as scholars, we must avoid anachronistic readings of these texts, ignoring modern thinkers like N. Katherine Hayles (How We Became Posthuman) and Donna Haraway (“A Cyborg Manifesto”) too easily disregards their valuable – and timeless – insights. While the term “posthuman” can evoke images of cyborgs or superhuman mutants using wormholes to traverse space and time, this pop culture perspective often overlooks less technoscientific examples of …
Domestic Cruelty: Saevitia And Separation In Medieval France, Kristi Diclemente
Domestic Cruelty: Saevitia And Separation In Medieval France, Kristi Diclemente
Quidditas
This article examines the role cruelty played in marriage separation cases in fourteenth-century Paris. Cruelty was an effective and relatively successful means for women to initiate separation litigation. The archdeacon’s court regularly cited saevitia as a reason for its decision to legally separate marriages. Marital cruelty, however was a complicated issue and what constituted cruelty was not defined within the text. Through an examination of the use of saevitia in the legal cases,in conjunction with contemporary exempla of abusive marriages, such as the vita of Godelieve of Gistel, the author finds that it was a complicated term representing a variety …
“I Am I”: The Allegorical Bastard In Shakespeare’S King John, Alaina Bupp
“I Am I”: The Allegorical Bastard In Shakespeare’S King John, Alaina Bupp
Quidditas
Shakespeare’s King John provides readers with a particularly interesting, though relatively unexamined character: Philip Falconbridge, the bastard. This character exists somewhere between the allegorical forbears of medieval morality plays and the intensely interior specificity of the likes of Hamlet. Philip begins the play with a specific, though fictional, identity, but consciously decides to become allegorical. We can see this transformation at the intersection of text and context, of the words spoken by Philip as he becomes Bastard (the allegorical figure) and the First Folio’s construction of that transformation. Bastard employs particular rhetoric to firstly shed his old, specific identity and …
Father Is A Man: The Remarkable Mention Of The Name Abish In Alma 19:16 And Its Narrative Context, Matthew L. Bowen
Father Is A Man: The Remarkable Mention Of The Name Abish In Alma 19:16 And Its Narrative Context, Matthew L. Bowen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The mention of “Abish” and a “remarkable vision of her father” (Alma 19:16) is itself remarkable, since women and servants are rarely named in the Book of Mormon text. As a Hebrew/Lehite name, “Abish” suggests the meaning “Father is a man,” the midrashic components ʾab- (“father”) and ʾîš (“man”) being phonologically evident. Thus, the immediate juxtaposition of the name “Abish” with the terms “her father” and “women” raises the possibility of wordplay on her name in the underlying text. Since ʾab-names were frequently theophoric — i.e., they had reference to a divine Father (or could be so understood) — the …

Joseph B. Keeler, Print Culture, And The Modernization Of Mormonism, 1885-1918, David J. Whittaker
BYU Studies
The years flanking the start of the twentieth century represented a time of transition for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Seventy years old in 1900, the Church and the larger Mormon society in which it resided still displayed much of their traditional character. Although some members congregated in urban densities that edged out along the Wasatch Front from Salt Lake City (Utah’s capital and the Church’s headquarters), most still lived in small, relatively self-contained agricultural communities in the Great Basin’s interior. Wherever they lived, however, they expected charismatic leaders to continue organizing the Church, directing devotional life, …
The Christus In Context: A Photo Essay, John W. Welch
The Christus In Context: A Photo Essay, John W. Welch
BYU Studies
Among the many good reasons to go to Copenhagen, Denmark, is to experience firsthand the famous Christus statue by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844) in the Vor Frue Kirke (The Church of Our Lady), the Lutheran Cathedral of Copenhagen. While this classic sculpture of Christ, in stunning white Carrara marble, would be impressive in any setting, it is especially meaningful and emotive in its original architectural setting.
Mormons And Midrash: On The Composition Of Expansive Interpretation In Genesis Rabbah And The Book Of Moses, Avram R. Shannon
Mormons And Midrash: On The Composition Of Expansive Interpretation In Genesis Rabbah And The Book Of Moses, Avram R. Shannon
BYU Studies
One of the intriguing things about religious texts is how long of a life and how long of an afterlife they have. Once a text becomes a part of a “canon,” once it becomes in a way fixed, it becomes open to further discussion and elaboration. Different groups and religious traditions create different genres of interpretation to work with and understand their scriptures according to the needs of their traditions. One form of interpretation involves reopening the Bible and expanding on the narrative of the already canonized text, such as is found in the rabbinic genre of midrash and in …
