“I Am A Hmong American”: An Exploration Of The Experiences Of Hmong Students In College, Ducha Hang Jan 2015

“I Am A Hmong American”: An Exploration Of The Experiences Of Hmong Students In College, Ducha Hang

Open Access Dissertations

As the changing demographics in the United States are steadily shifting the student populations in colleges and universities, the focus on retention and college success becomes ever more important. When marginalized and underrepresented students like Asian Americans enter post-secondary education institutions and are assumed to fit stereotypes like the Model Minority Myth which suggests that all Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students are high achievers, how do these students succeed and continue with their education under challenges including discrimination, language barriers (Lee, 2008) and cultural tension (Xiong and Lee, 2011; Ngo, 2007)? This study explores the experiences of Hmong …

An Exploratory Study Of The Role Of The Town Nurse, Lynn P. Blanchette Jan 2015

An Exploratory Study Of The Role Of The Town Nurse, Lynn P. Blanchette

Open Access Dissertations

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was designed to expand and refocus health care delivery to a more preventative mode as opposed to a curative one. Despite being a highly industrialized country, the United States of America (USA), ranks 37th in the world in a number of health outcomes including life expectancy, universal health coverage for core services, maternal outcomes and obesity rates among adults. Public health nursing is being called to respond to this need. What is missing from the literature is a description of the role of the Town Nurse.

A descriptive, exploratory study of the …

Unconscious States: A Novel, Rachel May Jan 2015

Unconscious States: A Novel, Rachel May

Open Access Dissertations

Unconscious States tells the story of three sisters in a rural New England town and aims to explore the class, racial, and agricultural tensions in central Massachusetts while addressing issues of addiction, the choices that three women face in making their lives, and a family’s struggle to sustain themselves after a devastating accident severely injures the oldest of the Roe sisters, Mary. The novel integrates the choices of educated women today—between scholarship, family, and work—and the racist underbelly, subtle but pervasive, in a New England town like Bolton, as well as the financial burdens that all families face in a …

Effects Of Perfluorinated Compounds (Pfcs) On Metabolic Tissues And The Benefits Of Caloric Restriction, Deanna M. Salter Jan 2015

Effects Of Perfluorinated Compounds (Pfcs) On Metabolic Tissues And The Benefits Of Caloric Restriction, Deanna M. Salter

Open Access Dissertations

The CDC states that there has been a dramatic increase in obesity from 1990 to 2010. Type-II diabetes and obesity prevalence are increasing worldwide. Often, obesity and Type-II diabetes are concurrent, and predispose individuals to development of fatty liver disease, referred to as Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are two commonly studied perfluorinated compounds (PFC’s) that are considered environmental toxicants that have the potential to elicit diabetic and NAFLD phenotypes. This dissertation presents novel findings of gaps within the literature to date. Traditionally, diabetes and obesity have been discussed in regard with …

The Mink Framework: An Integrated Framework To Assess Individual Knowledge In Organisational Context., Mohamed Ragab Jan 2015

The Mink Framework: An Integrated Framework To Assess Individual Knowledge In Organisational Context., Mohamed Ragab

Doctoral

Knowledge is the currency of the global economy, the foundation of wealth creation, and the sole antecedent of sustainable competitive advantage in today’s markets. In the current business environment, success of organisations is dependent upon their ability to develop and implement resilient Knowledge Management (KM) strategies to leverage and exploit their knowledge assets. Yet, knowledge is intrinsically linked to individuals and their exclusive abilities to create, share and apply knowledge thereby creating value for their organisations. Knowledge holders are without doubt the valuable assets which lead the increasing velocity of organisational transformation in order to cope with market pressures and …

Complex Interactions Of Factors Underlying Thai Efl Learners' Willingness To Communicate In English, Kamlaitip Pattapong

PASAA

This paper explores factors contributing to the willingness to communicate (WTC) in English as a foreign language (L2) in a Thai university setting. The study uses multiple methods within a qualitative research approach. Data were collected through interviews, stimulated recall, and classroom observations. Relevant contextually-related variables that emerged from the analyses were categorized into four dimensions: social- psychological context, classroom context, cultural context, and social- individual context. The findings revealed the overlapping nature of factors in all dimensions, which reflects the complex interactions among contextually dependent WTC variables within the language classroom. This paper contributes to the knowledge of WTC …

A Practical Guide To The Use Of The Commissioned Public Report As An Effective Crisis-Management Tool, F. Joseph Warin, Oleh Vretsona, Lora E. Macdonald Jan 2015

A Practical Guide To The Use Of The Commissioned Public Report As An Effective Crisis-Management Tool, F. Joseph Warin, Oleh Vretsona, Lora E. Macdonald

Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy

When terrorists attack an energy installation, disaster strikes a nuclear power plant, or a hurricane tears through wide swathes of a city, immediate concern is for the persons affected by the disaster. Close on the heels of this concern is often criticism of how the organization responsible for those persons’ safety has handled the catastrophic event, and an inept response—or one perceived as inept—can spell the organization’s demise. Institutional cracks are laid bare for the world to see, the public narrative turns it from victim to villain, reputational damage mounts, and a wave of public scrutiny and litigation looms. If …

The Need For Conditions Limiting The Use Of Legislative History In Statutory Interpretation: Lessons From The British Courts, Sylvia Costelloe Jan 2015

The Need For Conditions Limiting The Use Of Legislative History In Statutory Interpretation: Lessons From The British Courts, Sylvia Costelloe

Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy

Statutory interpretation is of crucial importance for both lawyers and judges. A notably fertile source of debate is the use of legislative history for purposes of statutory interpretation, which gained particular momentum in the past century. Proponents of the use of legislative history in statutory interpretation argue that it is a valuable tool for interpreting ambiguous statutes. On the other hand, opponents such as Justice Scalia have argued that the only law that should govern is that which has been passed by a majority of the House and the Senate. The debate among American judges and scholars has largely centered …

Legal Myths Of Ebola Preparedness And Response, James G. Hodge Jr. Jan 2015

Legal Myths Of Ebola Preparedness And Response, James G. Hodge Jr.

Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy

In March 2014, Ebola viral disease (“EVD”) emerged from several

West African countries as a substantial threat to global health.

Through a series of core legal powers pursuant to its declaration of a

public health emergency of international concern (“PHEIC”) on

August 8, 2014, the World Health Organization (“WHO”) averted a

global health disaster by requiring member countries to engage in mul- tiple public health interventions. These efficacious WHO-mandated

measures included implementation of border closures to limit the

spread of EVD within and outside of countries like Guinea, Liberia,

Senegal, and Sierra Leone. Industrialized nations, including the

United States, responded …

Applying Lessons From The Opioid Abuse Epidemic To Protect Consumers From Gray Market Biologics, Michael C. Barnes, Stacey L. Worthy

Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy

lmost 17,000 people die per year of overdoses involving prescription opioids, controlled substances prescribed to treat pain and addiction. As such, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) has deemed prescription drug abuse a national epidemic. In addition to opioids, several other classes of prescription medications have become prone to abuse, including stimulants and benzodiazepines. As many as twenty percent of college students have used stimulants at some point in their studies for nonmedical use, and the number of admissions to substance abuse treatment programs for benzodiazepine use nearly tripled between 1998 and 2008. And in 2011, benzodiazepines caused …

The A-Bomb Victims' Plea For Cosmopolitan Commemoration: Toward Reconciliation And World Peace, Hiro Saito Jan 2015

The A-Bomb Victims' Plea For Cosmopolitan Commemoration: Toward Reconciliation And World Peace, Hiro Saito

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper critically revisits the A-bomb victims' plea for cosmopolitan commemoration that takes humanity, rather than nationality, as a primary frame of reference. To this end, I first elaborate the nature of cosmopolitan commemoration espoused by A-bomb victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in comparison with another form of cosmopolitan commemoration pertaining to the Holocaust victims. I then analyze limitations in these cosmopolitan commemorations and explore how they can be transcended. In light of my critical analysis, I argue that genuinely cosmopolitan commemoration, a prerequisite for reconciliation and world peace, will appear on the horizon if the commemorations of the two …

Assessing The Relationship Between Vocabulary Learning Strategy Use And Vocabulary Knowledge, Feng Teng

PASAA

This study is an attempt to explore the correlation between direct and indirect vocabulary learning strategies along with the depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge. To this end, a sample of 145 low proficiency students who learn English as a Foreign Language (EFL) completed a questionnaire concerning vocabulary learning strategy use. Vocabulary Levels Test (Schmitt et al., 2001) and Word Associates Test (Read, 1993; 2004) were administered to measure the breadth and depth of lexical repertoire respectively. The results indicated that (a) direct strategies were frequently used by EFL students (except for direct cognitive analyzing strategy), and (b), indirect strategies …

Black Girls Matter: Pushed Out, Overpoliced And Underprotected, Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, Priscilla Ocen, Jyoti Nanda Jan 2015

Black Girls Matter: Pushed Out, Overpoliced And Underprotected, Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, Priscilla Ocen, Jyoti Nanda

Faculty Scholarship

For girls, as with boys, the failure to receive a high school diploma often places individuals on a pathway to low-wage work, unemployment, and incarceration. The imposition of harsh disciplinary policies in public schools is a well-known risk factor for stunted educational opportunities for Black and Latino boys. Such punishments also negatively affect their female counterparts, as do other conditions in zero-tolerance schools. Yet, the existing research, data, and public policy debates often fail to address the degree to which girls face risks that are both similar to and different from those faced by boys.

This silence about at-risk girls …

First-Generation College Students: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Relationship Between Parental Education Level And Perceptions Of Faculty-Student Interaction, Micol Hutchison Jan 2015

First-Generation College Students: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Relationship Between Parental Education Level And Perceptions Of Faculty-Student Interaction, Micol Hutchison

Theses and Dissertations

While quantitative research has determined that first-generation college students (FGS) are less likely to interact with faculty than are their non-FGS peers, this qualitative study examines how incoming first-year college students, both FGS and non-FGS, perceive faculty-student interaction and whether they consider it important. Addressing different types of interaction with college instructors, both in-class and out-of-class, participants across a range of FGS status shared their views through surveys, individual interviews, and focus groups. Focusing specifically on incoming first year students, this study also explores the motives for, impediments to, and encouragements to faculty-student interaction that students identify. Finally, the study …

Identifying Problems During Transitions Of Care And Reasons For Emergency Department Utilization In Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Antoinette B. Coe

Theses and Dissertations

A mixed methods approach was used for this study. The setting was a low-income, subsidized housing apartment building for community-dwelling older and younger disabled adults identified as a health care hot spot due to high rates of ambulance use. The study purpose was to identify reasons for ED use and problems during transition from ED to home, predictors of zip code 23220 (health care hot spot) in emergent and non-emergent ED visits, and predictors of total ED costs in community-dwelling older adults living in a health care hot spot. Semi-structured interviews with residents who used the ED, an existing database …

Avatar, Cyborg, Icevorg: Simulacra’S Scion, Guido E. Alvarez Jan 2015

Avatar, Cyborg, Icevorg: Simulacra’S Scion, Guido E. Alvarez

Theses and Dissertations

I propose a theoretical framework that describes how avatars incorporate media as an inherent part of their nature and find a hosting body in cyborgs to navigate and spawn in media. I propose the birth of a new scion that combines avatar, medium and cyborg into a conceptual being that I call “ICEVORG.”

The ICEVORG expands beyond representation into the actual physical world by means of media transgression—more specifically, by the use of the Strange Loop also known as Metalepsis ICEVORG find an effective soil to thrive and interrogate our ideas of reality by means of iteration, expansion, fragmentation and …

First-Year Secondary Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Preparedness To Integrate 21st Century Skills Into The Technology-Rich Classroom, Tracie Omohundro Jan 2015

First-Year Secondary Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Preparedness To Integrate 21st Century Skills Into The Technology-Rich Classroom, Tracie Omohundro

Theses and Dissertations

School districts continue to integrate emerging technologies and expectations for 21st century teaching and learning. This movement began with release of Goals 2000 (1994) and has continued through National Education Technology Plan (2010) that noted the “challenge for our education system is to leverage technology to create relevant learning experiences that mirror students’ daily lives and the reality of their futures.” In order to meet that challenge, schools must enlist teachers who are prepared to teach 21st century skills in the technology-rich classroom. Teacher education programs also need to align their preparation models to prepare teachers for that …

Nonmarine Time-Stratigraphy In A Rift Setting: An Example From The Mid-Permian Lower Quanzijie Low-Order Cycle Bogda Mountains, Nw China, Jonathan Obrist-Farner, Wan Yang

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sedimentological and stratigraphic studies of seven stratigraphic sections of Permian Hongyanchi (HYC) and Quanzijie (QZJ) low-order cycles (LCs) in the Tarlong-Taodonggou half graben and Dalongkou area in Bogda Mountains, NW China, demonstrate effective approaches and methodology in cyclo- and time-stratigraphic analyses of complex fluvial-lacustrine deposits in an intracontinental rift setting. A new synchronous stratigraphic unit, the lower QZJ LC is defined. The lower and upper boundaries of this cycle include a regionally correlative disconformity, erosional unconformity, and conformity, across which significant and abrupt changes in palaeoenvironments and tectonic and climatic conditions occurred. The lower boundary is an erosional unconformity and …

Promises Of Power: A Political Autobiography, Carl B. Stokes Jan 2015

Promises Of Power: A Political Autobiography, Carl B. Stokes

Cleveland Memory

For a brief time in Cleveland, I was the man of power. I had what no black man in this country has had before: direct control of the government of a predominantly white population. That power came to me because I seized a situation that had made me seem like a savior to men who ordinarily look on blacks as an alien and vaguely dangerous force. –Excerpt from chapter 1 “Big Man, Little Man.” Other chapters include “How to Get Elected by White People,” Carl Junior,” "The Media,” “The Police,” and “The Future of Black Politics.” Carl B. Using Higher Ionization States To Increase Coulomb Coupling In An Ultracold Neutral Plasma, M. Lyon, Scott D. Bergeson, A. Diaw, M. S. Murillo

Faculty Publications

We report measurements and simulations of the time-evolving rms velocity distribution in an ultracold neutral plasma. A strongly coupled ultracold neutral Ca+ plasma is generated by photoionizing laser-cooled atoms close to threshold. A fraction of these ions is then promoted to the second ionization state to form a mixed Ca+-Ca2+ plasma. By varying the time delay between the first and the second ionization events, a minimum in ion heating is achieved. We show that the Coulomb strong-coupling parameter Γ increases by a factor of 1.4 to a maximum value of 3.6. A pure Ca2+ plasma …

Evaluation Of Rock Fall Hazards Using Lidar Technology, Norbert H. Maerz, Travis Kassebaum, Kenneth J. Boyko, James Otoo

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lidar (light detection and ranging) is a relatively new technology that is being used in many aspects of geology and engineering, including researching the potential for rock falls on highway rock cuts. At Missouri University of Science and Technology, we are developing methods for measuring joint orientations remotely and quantifying the raveling process. Measuring joint orientations remotely along highways is safer, more accurate and can result in larger and more accurate data sets, including measurements from otherwise inaccessible areas. Measuring the nature of rock raveling will provide the data needed to begin the process of modeling the rock raveling process. …
