Preoperative Smoking Cessation Intervention: A Critical Appraisal Of The Evidence With Practice Recommendations, Casta Townsley
Preoperative Smoking Cessation Intervention: A Critical Appraisal Of The Evidence With Practice Recommendations, Casta Townsley
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
Smoking is the single most important risk factor in the development of postoperative complications. Daily smoking increases the risk of postoperative complications by a factor of two to four. Smoking cessation preoperatively is beneficial in increasing rates of cessation and therefore reducing the incidence of complications postoperatively. As a result, smoking cessation should be recognized as a core element of care for the preoperative management of the surgical patient. Although the benefits of smoking cessation are well established, as is substantial evidence demonstrating that brief interventions are effective in increasing cessation rates among users, clinicians fail to consistently address the …

The Amazon In Brazilian Speculative Fiction: Utopia And Trauma, M. Elizabeth Ginway
The Amazon In Brazilian Speculative Fiction: Utopia And Trauma, M. Elizabeth Ginway
Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía
There are two key moments when the Amazon is used as the setting for Brazilian science fiction, both during periods of dictatorship in the twentieth century. The first takes place during the authoritarian government of Getúlio Vargas (1930-1945), the second after the decades-long push for modernization and technological change imposed by the military government from 1964 to 1985. My study shows that, for writers of the first half of the twentieth century, the Amazon is a place of adventure, a setting for stories whose imaginative events ignore the region’s anthropology, history and indigenous cultures. Among the early Brazilian Amazonian adventure …

There Goes The Neighborhood: The Effects Of Residency Restrictions On Sex Offenders And The Community, Linde Christine Rush Burkey
There Goes The Neighborhood: The Effects Of Residency Restrictions On Sex Offenders And The Community, Linde Christine Rush Burkey
Theses and Dissertations
Sex offender laws and regulations were enacted with the goal of preventing and reducing sex crimes, however, some scholars have argued sex offender laws may actually contribute to an increase in recidivism as a result of a number of unintended consequences. While there have been numerous studies examining the unintended consequences associated with residency restrictions, no research to date has examined the location of sex offender clusters and how these clusters affect the community and sex crimes within their geographical vicinities. While some researchers have established that the clustering of registered sex offenders occurs in certain geographical areas, further analysis …

Perceptions Of Cultural And Linguistic Preparedness: Deaf And Hard Of Hearing College Students’ Beliefs About Their K-12 School Setting, Rebecca Rosenbarker
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The research question addressed in this project was, do deaf and hard of hearing university students think their K-12 setting prepared them to succeed linguistically and culturally in both the Deaf and hearing communities? This research examines the survey responses of 11 deaf and hard of hearing university students through a mixed-methods approach. Through this research, the following trends were identified. First, the majority of participants found their school setting helped prepare them linguistically and culturally for the hearing world. Next, the majority of students from mainstream settings did not feel their school prepared them linguistically or culturally for the …
Influences Of African American English On Cognitive Processing And Reading Comprehension For African American Adolescent Readers, Alma Renee Dawson
Influences Of African American English On Cognitive Processing And Reading Comprehension For African American Adolescent Readers, Alma Renee Dawson
Theses and Dissertations
There has been a virtual wave of studies investigating influences of African American English on academic achievement. Many of these studies have taken a sociolinguistic stance citing language stratification and low perception of the language as causes for the success and failures of these students. Others have suggested that the language used in family and community settings are not congruent with the academic language in school. In this study, I investigated the influences of African American English on reading achievement from a psycholinguistic perspective. This study analyzed the oral language, linguistics, and the cognitive processing behaviors of African American students …

Asenapine For Bipolar Disorder, Thomas Scheidemantel, Irina Korobkova, Martha Sajatovic
Faculty Scholarship
Asenapine (Saphris®) is an atypical antipsychotic drug which has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults, as well as the treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I in both adult and pediatric populations. Asenapine is a tetracyclic drug with antidopaminergic and antiserotonergic activity with a unique sublingual route of administration. In this review, we examine and summarize the available literature on the safety, efficacy, and tolerability of asenapine in the treatment of bipolar disorder (BD). Data from randomized, double-blind trials comparing asenapine to placebo or olanzapine in the …

Preferential Methods Used By Celcis Students To Enhance Conversational Skills., Karina Mariadas
Honors Theses
Conversational skills are something that can be improved over time. For new language learners, conversing in English can be difficult. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the preferential methods to enhance conversational skills used by students from the Center for English Language and Culture for International Students (CELCIS) at Western Michigan University. The study was conducted using a survey questionnaire consisting of 7 parts. The conversation improvement methods that were addressed in the survey included: print, audio-visual, electronic devices/technology, face-to-face conversations and games. 112 students, 35 females, 75 males and 2 unknowns, participated in the survey during …
Executive Summary: The Effects Of High Fidelity Simulation On Hesi Grades, Monica Taylor
Executive Summary: The Effects Of High Fidelity Simulation On Hesi Grades, Monica Taylor
DNP and Student Works
The nursing program at a community college in Texas had a steady decrease in National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN®) and Health Education Systems, Incorporated (HESI) scores for the past five years. After making several changes in the program, HESI scores continued to be low. In 2012, the school built a new state of the art high fidelity simulation lab. The faculty considered high fidelity simulation (HFS) as a possible solution to improve the scores. The purpose of this project was to examine whether the integration of HFS with traditional clinical learning experiences would increase the students' performance …
Measuring Resting Energy Requirements For Pediatric Oncology Patients With The Medgem, Lauren C. Flowers
Measuring Resting Energy Requirements For Pediatric Oncology Patients With The Medgem, Lauren C. Flowers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Pediatric oncology patients are at an increased risk for malnutrition related to their diagnosis and corresponding treatment. It is essential that accurate and reliable methods of measuring energy needs are used throughout treatment to avoid increased risk of morbidity and mortality. The primary objective of the study is to determine if the energy expenditure obtained by a standard energy equation and by the MedGem® accurately predicts needs in pediatric oncology patients as compared to the gold standard indirect calorimeter. The three measurements were tested on the same day for patients aged 7-17 years. The data was analyzed using a one …

Teacher Self-Efficacy: How Do High-Performing Black Teachers In Under-Performing Schools Negotiate Self-Efficacy?, Tisha Lithel White
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Despite the vast research on efficacy and teacher efficacy, little focuses on high-performing Black teachers who work in low-performing urban schools. This research fills a gap in understanding high-performing Black teachers and provides a voice to a population under-represented in research. Through focus groups, semi-structured interviews, storytelling, and reviewing student work samples, findings showed that high-performing Black teachers in underperforming urban schools participate in specific practices that demonstrate their personal self-efficacy. Teachers were reflective, inquisitive, and generally maintained a positive outlook in all situations. The teachers in this study also carefully adapted their practice by focusing on strong relationships with …

Haunted By History: Specters Of The Past In Literature Of The Global South, April Kathleen Lenoir
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This project argues that the shared history of slavery, imperialism, and the plantation manifests in 20th Century literature from both the Caribbean and the Southern United States as a haunting and ghostly presence. I utilize both canonical and less well-known authors, with a particular focus on female authors. Authors from both regions write stories of people and places haunted by history as a way to confront the ghosts of slavery and the plantation to allow them a future free of ghosts. Overall I bring together texts that have not been previously read together to show connections between literature of the …

"I'Ll Take Mississippi": The Gubernatorial Campaigns Of Charles L. Sullivan, Erin Hendricks
The Catalyst
In an eulogistic piece entitled "The Quest--Not the Victory," award-winning writer Joseph P. Ellis detailed the thirty years in the life of Mississippian Charles L. Sullivan, who attempted to obtain a place in the state's political realm that he never achieved. Written shortly after Sullivan's 1979 death in a tragic plane crash, the article reviewed his life including his three separate attempts at the Mississippi governorship, asserting that, though Sullivan never claimed the title he sought after, his campaigns and their impact proved far more lasting than a term or two in the office of governor. What kind of man …

Studying Bush Babies, David Hanbury

For an undergraduate student to engage in what promises to be groundbreaking, revolutionary research is an extraordinarily unique experience. In August of 2003, I was given the opportunity to participate in a research program advancing the understanding of primates through behavioral research of prosimians known as bush babies (Otolemur garnettii), at The University of Southern Mississippi's Laboratory for Prosimian Studies. Through research and observation, I am learning something new every day about the behavioral, cognitive, and anatomical differences and congruencies between humans and our fellow primates.

An Essay On Writing, Anna Gibson
The Catalyst
The power of writing has been demonstrated throughout the centuries. As a vehicle for persuasion, a tool for explanation, and a conveyer of emotional narrative, the impact of the written word is an important tool for anyone in the working world. With many high school students graduating without the ability of constructing an essay, the importance of writing instruction in schools is all too apparent.

Service-learning may now be a little-known movement at The University of Southern Mississippi, but soon many students will be familiar with it. Service-learning is an attempt to return the university to its original standards of teaching students to become informed, critical citizens actively involved in bettering the community. Service-learning may seem to be a trend because its true purpose is misunderstood and even widely unknown by the bulk of the student population.
However, at Southern Miss, several organizations are striving to change these misconceptions and spread knowledge about service-learning.
