“It Broadens Your View Of Being Basque”: Identity Through History, Branding And Cultural Policy, Nina M. Ray, John P. Bieter
“It Broadens Your View Of Being Basque”: Identity Through History, Branding And Cultural Policy, Nina M. Ray, John P. Bieter
Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of the paper is to address what is the impact of the synthesis between Basque history, branding identity and Law 8/1994 on Basque identity in the homeland and Diaspora. Naturally occurring brands combine history, anthropology, sociology, and marketing to explain the phenomenon of communities defined by a sense of place. Focusing on both the Basque Country and Basques in Boise, Idaho as one case study, the authors discuss how the naturally occurring brand and cultural policy of the Basque people became formalized 20 years ago with Law 8/1994. The article addresses who the Basques are and how they …
At Home In The Diaspora: Domesticity And Nationalism In Postwar And Contemporary Caribbean-British Fiction, Kim Caroline Evelyn
At Home In The Diaspora: Domesticity And Nationalism In Postwar And Contemporary Caribbean-British Fiction, Kim Caroline Evelyn
Open Access Dissertations
This project investigates the ways in which home is conceptualized and represented in sixty years of the literature of the Caribbean diaspora in Britain by balancing texts from the post-World War II period with contemporary texts and considering how the diaspora has been imagined and reimagined. Making a home of a diaspora—typically considered as a collection of scattered and ostracized migrants— requires a conceptual leap, act of agency, and, sometimes, a flight of imagination. Through the imagery of domesticity and the rhetoric of nationalism, literary analyses of representations of diaspora allow us to explore the imagined constructs of diasporic homes. …
Public Relations: Diaspora, Media, And The State(S) Of American Literature, Nathan Allen Jung
Public Relations: Diaspora, Media, And The State(S) Of American Literature, Nathan Allen Jung
Dissertations
Like any good public relations campaign, this dissertation aims to offer a persuasive interpretation of certain key facts. The facts, as I see them, are as follows: first, a great number of contemporary novels and poems explore the personal and social consequences of diasporic migration. Second, these texts, along with their print and electronic paratexts, share a pervasive interest in media. And third, these works are rarely read in conversation with one another, despite their mutual concern for migration and media. Owing to this last point in particular, scholarship has failed to fully address the broader media theories developed in …

Young, Gifted, And Brown: Ricanstructing Through Autoethnopoetic Stories For Critical Diasporic Puerto Rican Pedagogy, Ángel Luis Martínez
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Young, Gifted and Brown is a journey of two directions converging. It is a study of Puerto Rican Diaspora in higher education, specifically, students making sense and meaning of their everyday. It is also a study of how I have related to them as a professor. Together, this is a story: research done creatively, toward the development of Critical Pedagogy for Puerto Rican Diaspora. The research question is: what has made the Puerto Rican Diaspora in the United States flourish and their lived experience meaningful? How can a diasporic people connect with and affirm their roots in an educational system …

Maopewa Iati Bi: Takai Tonqyayun Monyton "To Abandon So Beautiful A Dwelling": Indians In The Kanawha-New River Valley, 1500-1755, Isaac J. Emrick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Maopewa iati bi is a Tutelo translation of William Byrd's eighteenth century quote "To abandon so beautiful a Dwelling." The quotes sets the stage for this examination of the indigenous landscape history of the eastern half of the Middle Ohio River Valley. The region, or Okahok amai, was the homeland of Siouan speakers, but passed from Siouan control into Iroquoian and Algonquian hands around turn of the eighteenth century. Not long afterward Indians, pressured by British and French citizens and governments, were forced to again fight to maintain their hard won new homes. By the middle of the eighteenth century, …
