Fantahistorical Vs. Fantafascist Epic: “Contemporary” Alternative Italian Colonial Histories, Simone Brioni Dr. Jan 2015

Fantahistorical Vs. Fantafascist Epic: “Contemporary” Alternative Italian Colonial Histories, Simone Brioni Dr.

Department of English Faculty Publications

This article focuses on Enrico Brizzi’s L’inattesa piega degli eventi [The Unexpected Turn of Events, 2008], La nostra guerra [Our War, 2009], and Lorenzo Pellegrini e le donne [Lorenzo Pellegrini and the Women, 2012], a trilogy of alternative history novels that imagines what would have happened to the Italian empire if Italy had not allied with Germany during the Second World War. Drawing on Giorgio Agamben’s reflections on contemporaneity (2009), I analyze how this trilogy represents Fascism and its colonial legacy in relation to the history of politics and soccer in Italy. I also compare Brizzi’s trilogy to Mario Farneti’s …

Transnational Governance Interactions: A Critical Review Of The Legal Literature, Stepan Wood Jan 2015

Transnational Governance Interactions: A Critical Review Of The Legal Literature, Stepan Wood

Transnational Business Governance Interactions Working Papers

Overlaps and interactions among diverse legal rules, actors and orders have long preoccupied legal scholars. This preoccupation has intensified in recent years as transnational efforts to regulate business have proliferated. This proliferation has led to increasingly frequent and intense interactions among transnational regulatory actors and programs. These transnational business governance interactions (TBGI) are the subject of an emerging interdisciplinary research agenda. This paper situates the TBGI research agenda in the broader field of transnational legal theory by presenting a critical review of the ways in which legal scholars have addressed the phenomenon of governance interactions. Legal scholars frequently recognize the …

From Tortillas To Low-Carb Wraps: Capitalism And Mexican Food In Los Angeles Since The 1920s, Enrique C. Ochoa Jan 2015

From Tortillas To Low-Carb Wraps: Capitalism And Mexican Food In Los Angeles Since The 1920s, Enrique C. Ochoa

Diálogo

Tortillas and products made from maize provided subsistence to early Mesoamerican civilizations, and are central to Mexican national identity, Latino/a communities, and the globalization of Mexican foods. In the U.S., tortillas represent one of the fastest growing sectors of the food industry. This study shows how the adaptive nature of capitalism leads to a refining of colonial praxis, using the tools of industrialization, nutrition science, and marketing as new methods for colonizing maize and delinking it from Mexican culture and history.

Branding Guilt: American Apparel Inc. And Latina Labor In Los Angeles, Hannah Noel Jan 2015

Branding Guilt: American Apparel Inc. And Latina Labor In Los Angeles, Hannah Noel

Diálogo

A study of the marketing strategies of the clothing enterprise, American Apparel, how it targets affluent, educated youth through socially conscious tactics, including a focus on pro-immigrant rights and Los Angeles-made, “sweatshop-free” advertising. The essay analyzes the ideologies and stances behind marketing materials that often contain images of Latinas/os as laborers, and white (European origin) population as consumers, and examines how U.S.-based ethical capitalism operates as a neoliberal form of social regulation to champion personal responsibility and individual freedom, in often hidden and inferentially racist and classist ways.

Localists And “Locusts” In Hong Kong: Creating A Yellow-Red Peril Discourse, Barry Sautman, Hairong Yan Jan 2015

Localists And “Locusts” In Hong Kong: Creating A Yellow-Red Peril Discourse, Barry Sautman, Hairong Yan

Maryland Series in Contemporary Asian Studies

Hong Kong’s “localists” depict mainlanders as locusts ruining the territory and bringing an end to a vaunted way of life.

In this article, we first discuss anti-mainlander prejudice in Hong Kong and its resemblance to earlier biases by Shanghai people against Chinese from neighboring provinces. We then empirically test claims localists make about the mainlander presence in Hong Kong and show that mainland visitors and migrants are not working the harms attributed to them. There follows a review of “insect language” as integral to racial vilification in several settings, with Hong Kong’s anti-locust movement a recent example. We go on …

Slipping From Secret History To Novel, Rachel K. Carnell Jan 2015

Slipping From Secret History To Novel, Rachel K. Carnell

English Faculty Publications

The secret history, a genre of writing made popular as opposition political propaganda during the reign of Charles ii, has been the subject of renewed critical interest in recent years. By the mid-1740s, novelists were using markers of secret histories on the title pages of their works, thus blurring the genres. This forgotten history of the secret history can help us understand why Ian Watt and other twentieth-century critics tended to end their narratives of the rise of the “realist” Whig novel with the works of the Tory novelist Jane Austen. In particular, the blended narrative perspective that Watt praises …

An Exploration Of Poverty In Central Appalachia: Questions Of Culture, Industry, And Technology, Cara Robinson Jan 2015

An Exploration Of Poverty In Central Appalachia: Questions Of Culture, Industry, And Technology, Cara Robinson

Social Work and Urban Studies Faculty Research

By most government statistical definitions, Central Appalachia is one of the most impoverished regions in the United States. Many of the region’s residents are low income, dependent on government benefits, have high rates of obesity and diabetes, and low rates of college educational obtainment. Central Appalachia is historically tied to the coal mining and railroad industries. Many scholars believe this historical bond created an internal colony of company-dependent residents who have been unable to transition successfully from those industry’s boom eras or escape the lingering effects of industry environmental, health and economic degradation. While coal mining stripped the land of …

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

We describe the generation of microfluidic platforms for the co-culture of primary hepatocytes and endothelial cells; these platforms mimic the architecture of a liver sinusoid. This paper describes a progressional study of creating such a liver sinusoid on a chip system. Primary rat hepatocytes (PRHs) were co-cultured with primary or established endothelial cells in layers in single and dual microchannel configurations with or without continuous perfusion. Cell viability and maintenance of hepatocyte functions were monitored and compared for diverse experimental conditions. When primary rat hepatocytes were co-cultured with immortalized bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) in a dual microchannel with continuous …

Disrupting The Cycle Of Self-Objectification, Hayley G. Meredith Jan 2015

Disrupting The Cycle Of Self-Objectification, Hayley G. Meredith

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

From a young age, women face exposure to fat talk. Though many women tend to assume this normative way of communicating about the body as a helpful means of coping with body shame and dissatisfaction, past literature has created a strong case against this assumption. Fat talk plays a subtle role in the self-objectification process and poses a significant threat to the positive identity development of young women. Development of a feminist identity has demonstrated a capacity to positively disrupt the propensity for women to self-objectify. The current study explored the relationship between feminist identity development, fat talk, and self-objectification. …

The Gender Divide In Humor: How People Rate The Competence, Influence, And Funniness Of Men And Women By The Jokes They Tell And How They Tell Them, Christina Rozek Jan 2015

The Gender Divide In Humor: How People Rate The Competence, Influence, And Funniness Of Men And Women By The Jokes They Tell And How They Tell Them, Christina Rozek

Honors Thesis Collection

How has the gender divide in humor—the widespread belief that men are funnier than women—arisen? Some theories in evolutionary biology provide compelling explanations for why it is more crucial for men than for women to be funny. I offer an alternative sociolinguistic perspective on the formation of this divide that focuses on the frequent association of women with a less powerful speech style, and how it may be changing. I investigated responses to jokes told by men and women using powerful and powerless styles. Hypothesis 1 was that jokes attributed to male speakers would receive higher ratings of competence, influence, …

Organizational Secrecy And The Fbi’S Cointelpro–Black Nationalist Hate Groups Program, 1967–1971, Kristen Hoerl, Erin Ortiz

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

In this article, we explain how secrecy influenced the communication and decision-making processes within COINTELPRO–Black Nationalist Hate Groups, the FBI’s covert program to disrupt left-leaning Black political organizations between 1967 and 1971. Memos exchanged between the FBI Director and field offices reveal how the organization strategized to conceal its identity as the source of anonymous communication. The Bureau developed explicit techniques for managing the content of their messages, the materials used to construct print messages, and the distribution of those messages. The Bureau’s techniques suggest that organizational secrecy involves a high degree of coordination between members, but it may also …

Journal Articles

BACKGROUND: Prolonged exercise, such as marathon running, has been associated with an increase in respiratory mucosal inflammation. The aim of this pilot study was to examine the effects of Montmorency cherry juice on markers of stress, immunity and inflammation following a Marathon. METHODS: Twenty recreational Marathon runners consumed either cherry juice (CJ) or placebo (PL) before and after a Marathon race. Markers of mucosal immunity secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA), immunoglobulin G (IgG), salivary cortisol, inflammation (CRP) and self-reported incidence and severity of upper respiratory tract symptoms (URTS) were measured before and following the race. RESULTS: All variables except secretory IgA …

Journal Articles

Low back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide and the second most common cause of physician visits. There are many causes of back pain, and among them, disc herniation and intervertebral disc degeneration are the most common diagnoses and targets for intervention. Currently, clinical treatment outcomes are not strongly correlated with diagnoses, emphasizing the importance for characterizing more completely the mechanisms of degeneration and their relationships with symptoms. This review covers recent studies elucidating cellular and molecular changes associated with disc mechanobiology, as it relates to degeneration and regeneration. Specifically, we review findings on the biochemical changes in …

A Study Of The Perceptions Of Diversity And Inclusion Initiatives In Producing Improved Productive Work Cultures, Robert T. Crouch

Education Dissertations and Projects

Organizations today view diversity in the workforce as extending beyond antidiscrimination laws. Diversity in the workplace is viewed as a means for organizations to maintain a competitive edge in the global job market by focusing on inclusion and performance. Organizations have begun to recognize that diversity results in economic benefits when initiatives are aligned with their strategic plans, goals, and core values (U.S. Department of Commerce, 1999).

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of departmental personnel regarding the impact of diversity and inclusion initiatives in improving and sustaining productive work cultures. Additionally, this study sought to …
