Comparison Of Outcomes In Heart Bypass Patients Undergoing Insertion Of An Internal Jugular Vein Central Line By Ultrasound Compared To Traditional Landmark Technique, Sayha Ol Ma
Doctoral Projects
Patients that undergo heart bypass surgery require central line placement from a healthcare provider. To place this device one must use either ultrasound guided or landmark technique. Using ultrasound guided compared to landmark technique may reduce complications. The goal of this project was to determine if ultrasound use of central line placement is a safer practice compared to using the traditional technique.
A retrospective chart review was performed to compare internal jugular central line placement by ultrasound with the traditional landmark placement to evaluate results related to patient outcomes. Data from fifty health records were analyzed using chi-square. The complications …
The Regional Study Of Sleep-Related Behaviors Of Nurse Anesthetists: Personal And Professional Implications: A Replication Study, Jarrod Fontenelle
The Regional Study Of Sleep-Related Behaviors Of Nurse Anesthetists: Personal And Professional Implications: A Replication Study, Jarrod Fontenelle
Doctoral Projects
Universally, anesthesia providers are expected to be knowledgeable, astutely responding to clinical challenges while maintaining a prolonged vigilance for administration of safe anesthesia and critical care. A fatigued anesthetist is the consequence of cumulative acuity manifesting as decreased motor and cognitive powers. This results in patient harm, impaired judgement, late and inadequate responses to clinical changes, poor communications, and medical errors. With increased expectations and medical-legal claims, anesthesiologists work to provide efficient and timely services, but are rendered sleep deprived themselves. It is the right time to address the issue of the health of anesthesia providers and the profession. The …

Use Of Satellite Soil Moisture To Estimate Soil Strength And Ground Vehicle Mobility, Maria T. Stevens
Use Of Satellite Soil Moisture To Estimate Soil Strength And Ground Vehicle Mobility, Maria T. Stevens
Theses and Dissertations
Soil moisture is a key variable in off-road mobility. Mobility analysis was conducted based on three soil moisture sources: WindSat (a satellite), LIS (a computer model), and in situ ground sensors (assumed to represent ground truth). Mobility of six vehicles, each with different ranges of sensitivity to soil moisture, was examined in three test sites. Two methods were used: a simplified method based on time series and a fulleatured terrain method. The results demonstrated that the effect of the soil moisture error on mobility predictions is complex and may produce very significant errors in mobility analysis for certain combinations of …
Kindergarten Literacy Remediation For Low Socioeconomic And Ell Students Without Preschool Experiences, Jillian Leedock
Kindergarten Literacy Remediation For Low Socioeconomic And Ell Students Without Preschool Experiences, Jillian Leedock
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
By the end of the first quarter all kindergarten students will learn to identify all 52 uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet. They will also be able to identify all 26 letter sounds and learn to read, these are benchmarks set by schools. Nevertheless, most English Language Learners (ELL) students that enter the elementary school system at age 5 do not recognize any English alphabet letters or letter sounds. Some children know the alphabet in their native language, which makes the learning process easier because there already is a literacy base and understanding, but some children come to school …
Levee Slide Detection Using Synthetic Aperture Radar Magnitude And Phase, Ramakalavathi Marapareddy
Levee Slide Detection Using Synthetic Aperture Radar Magnitude And Phase, Ramakalavathi Marapareddy
Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this research are to support the development of state-of-the-art methods using remotely sensed data to detect slides or anomalies in an efficient and cost-effective manner based on the use of SAR technology. Slough or slump slides are slope failures along a levee, which leave areas of the levee vulnerable to seepage and failure during high water events. This work investigates the facility of detecting the slough slides on an earthen levee with different types of polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (polSAR) imagery. The source SAR imagery is fully quad-polarimetric L-band data from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s (JPL’s) …
Low Rank And Sparse Representation For Hyperspectral Imagery Analysis, Alex Hendro Sumarsono
Low Rank And Sparse Representation For Hyperspectral Imagery Analysis, Alex Hendro Sumarsono
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation develops new techniques employing the Low-rank and Sparse Representation approaches to improve the performance of state-of-the-art algorithms in hyperspectral image analysis. The contributions of this dissertation are outlined as follows. 1) Low-rank and sparse representation approaches, i.e., low-rank representation (LRR) and low-rank subspace representation (LRSR), are proposed for hyperspectral image analysis, including target and anomaly detection, estimation of the number of signal subspaces, supervised and unsupervised classification. 2) In supervised target and unsupervised anomaly detection, the performance can be improved by using the LRR sparse matrix. To further increase detection accuracy, data is partitioned into several highly-correlated groups. …

We report the observation of transverse polarization-dependent azimuthal correlations in charged pion pair production with the STAR experiment in p↑+p collisions at RHIC. These correlations directly probe quark transversity distributions. We measure signals in excess of 5 standard deviations at high transverse momenta, at high pseudorapidities η>0.5, and for pair masses around the mass of the ρ meson. This is the first direct transversity measurement in p+p collisions.

One-month after intervention, post 2-testing was distributed evaluating retention of knowledge and behavioral change. Overall, participants experienced knowledge gain immediately after intervention …
Why Not Play: Incorporating Play Into The Kindergarten Literacy Curriculum, Linda Yeboah
Why Not Play: Incorporating Play Into The Kindergarten Literacy Curriculum, Linda Yeboah
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Play allows children to practice skills learned during teacher instruction, develop problem solving skills, gather and process information quickly, and reduce stress and behavioral issues (Driscoll & Nagel, 2010). But, many critics, both in early childhood education and outside the early childhood profession, question why so much emphasis is placed on play. The objective of this research is to study how play through music and play through hands-on activities embedded into the classroom curriculum influence literacy development. Action research, involving classroom observations and student assessments was conducted in a kindergarten classroom where music and hands-on play is incorporated into the …

Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) has enjoyed a long history of success and study as a practice for data-based decision-making (Deno, 2003). Originally developed and studied at the University of Minnesota in the mid-1970s (see Shinn, 2012 or Tindal, 2013 for a detailed history), Stan Deno and his colleagues developed CBM measures and the problem-solving process as part of one of the Institutes for Research on Learning Disabilities (IRLDs), centers funded by the Office of Special Education Programs that addressed significant issues for students with learning dis- abilities. With Deno’s interests in applied behavior analysis, it seemed logical to apply methodologies such …

A Pilot Study Of Propofol As An Anti-Emetic In Laparoscopic, Gynecologic Surgery Patients, Flem-Flam Aaron Flemister
Doctoral Projects
The goal of this project was to use sub-hypnotic doses of propofol to decrease post operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) rates in the immediate post-operative period in females, ages 18-65, undergoing laparoscopic gynecologic surgery.
PONV is one of the largest complications of anesthesia affecting 20-30% of all surgical patients. Risk factors associated with PONV are female gender, laparoscopy, general anesthesia, opioids, volatile agents, and post-operative pain; all of which are frequently encountered. The incidence of PONV can prolong recovery time, delay discharge, increase patient cost, decrease patient satisfaction, and can cause significant medical complications. Propofol has previously demonstrated anti-emetic properties; …

Does Social Media Help Create Brand Loyalty?, Ali Russo
Does Social Media Help Create Brand Loyalty?, Ali Russo
Honors Theses
Throughout my time at Haworth College of Business, Social Media has been a big topic of discussion. The issue has not been if companies should use it as a tool to reach consumers but how do companies effectively utilize Social Media sites. Companies have two important ways to utilize these sites: the first is to collect data from users, and the second is to create a platform where they can interact and influence purchasing decisions. I wanted to create a thesis that focused on the interaction side of Social Media. Initially, I wanted to see if Social Media would create …
The Development Of A Model For Vascular Calcification And The Effects Of Magnesium Supplementation On In Vitro Calcification, Joshua Nathaniel Grant
The Development Of A Model For Vascular Calcification And The Effects Of Magnesium Supplementation On In Vitro Calcification, Joshua Nathaniel Grant
Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease is most deadly medical condition in the United States. Medial vascular calcification is a disease that often precedes other more serious cardiovascular diseases that have high mortality. In order to research new therapies for the treatment of medial vascular calcification, an in vitro cell culture model must be developed that mimics the process in vivo. This disease is shown to be an active, cell-mediated process where the vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in the arteries are differentiating into osteoblast-like cells and depositing hydroxyapatite mineral in the artery walls. By administering inorganic phosphate to cell culture medium, an osteogenic …
Response Surface Analysis Of Trapped-Vortex Augmented Airfoils, Anup Devidas Zope
Response Surface Analysis Of Trapped-Vortex Augmented Airfoils, Anup Devidas Zope
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, the effect of a passive trapped-vortex cell on lift to drag (L/D) ratio of an FFA-W3-301 airfoil is studied. The upper surface of the airfoil was modified to incorporate a cavity defined by seven parameters. The L/D ratio of the airfoil is modeled using a radial basis function metamodel. This model is used to find the optimal design parameter values that give the highest L/D. The numerical results indicate that the L/D ratio is most sensitive to the position on an airfoil’s upper surface at which the cavity starts, the position of the end point of the …
