Effects Of Small Molecule Modulators And Phospholipid Liposomes On Βeta-Amyloid (1-40) Amyloidogenesis, Clifford Morris Jan 2015

Effects Of Small Molecule Modulators And Phospholipid Liposomes On Βeta-Amyloid (1-40) Amyloidogenesis, Clifford Morris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Beta-Amyloid (1-40) (Aβ40) is an aggregation prone protein, which undergoes a nucleation-dependent aggregation process causing the pathological neurodegeneration by amyloid plaque formation implicated in Alzheimer’s disease. In this thesis, we investigated the effects of small molecule modulators extracted from the marine invertebrate Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae on the Aβ40 amyloidogenic process using in- vitro ThT fluorescence assay and atomic force microscopy. We also investigated the effects of neutral and anionic phospholipid liposomes on Aβ40 aggregation. Our results show that a marine natural product Pseudopterosin-A and its derivatives can suppress and modulate the Aβ40 aggregation process. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that a neutral …

Compliance Issues In Cloud Computing Systems, Dereje Yimam Jan 2015

Compliance Issues In Cloud Computing Systems, Dereje Yimam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Appealing features of cloud services such as elasticity, scalability, universal access, low entry cost, and flexible billing motivate consumers to migrate their core businesses into the cloud. However, there are challenges about security, privacy, and compliance. Building compliant systems is difficult because of the complex nature of regulations and cloud systems. In addition, the lack of complete, precise, vendor neutral, and platform independent software architectures makes compliance even harder. We have attempted to make regulations clearer and more precise with patterns and reference architectures (RAs). We have analyzed regulation policies, identified overlaps, and abstracted them as patterns to build compliant …

Corporate Diversification: Organization Capital, Organic Growth, And Long-Term Performance, Garrett C. Smith Jan 2015

Corporate Diversification: Organization Capital, Organic Growth, And Long-Term Performance, Garrett C. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Corporate diversification is a core topic in Financial Economics. The desire to better understand why a firm elects to diversify as opposed to increase in scale is the motivation of this dissertation. To accomplish this goal I test a number of dynamic models of corporate diversification, with similar predictions, to better understand the dynamic choice to diversify. I find that several previously untested models do indeed provide insight as to why a firm would diversify (Essay One). In particular two firm traits, firm talent which I use the proxy of organization capital and asset specificity which I use the proxy …

Imaging Through Ground-Level Turbulence By Fourier Telescopy: Simulations And Preliminary Experiments, Nishantha Randunu-Pathirannehelage Jan 2015

Imaging Through Ground-Level Turbulence By Fourier Telescopy: Simulations And Preliminary Experiments, Nishantha Randunu-Pathirannehelage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Fourier telescopy imaging is a recently-developed imaging method that relies on active structured-light illumination of the object. Reflected/scattered light is measured by a large “light bucket” detector; processing of the detected signal yields the magnitude and phase of spatial frequency components of the object reflectance or transmittance function. An inverse Fourier transform results in the image. In 2012 a novel method, known as time-average Fourier telescopy (TAFT), was introduced by William T. Rhodes as a means for diffraction-limited imaging through ground-level atmospheric turbulence. This method, which can be applied to long horizontal-path terrestrial imaging, addresses a need that is not …

Eminent Domain As Enclosure Movement: The Privatization Of Law Under Neoliberalism, Jeffery Kleeger Jan 2015

Eminent Domain As Enclosure Movement: The Privatization Of Law Under Neoliberalism, Jeffery Kleeger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Law is a means to an end. The state has always claimed it uses law as a tool to promote social order and progress (the Brazilian National Flag is an example). The use of law to force social change to facilitate capital accumulation for elites in society flies in the face of what the takings clause is supposed to stand for. This research examines the connection between economic development and public good. It focuses on takings because takings lie at the intersection between economics, politics, and social relations. Takings are justified by necessity and public good, but the claim isn’t …

Does Public Service Ethics Education Include Gender Equity? An Exploration Of Gender Inclusion In Mpa Ethics Syllabi, Michelle D. Evans Jan 2015

Does Public Service Ethics Education Include Gender Equity? An Exploration Of Gender Inclusion In Mpa Ethics Syllabi, Michelle D. Evans

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Public administration emphasizes the importance of diversity (Rice, 2004), representation (Selden & Selden, 2002), ethics, and professionalism, to ensure fairness and equity for all citizens (American Society for Public Administration, 2013a; Cooper, 2012). Research has shown a link between the teaching of ethics and values in leadership courses, and the establishment of consensus for espoused social norms and standards of practice (Begley & Stefkovich, 2007). Through the discourse within classrooms, and the scholarship of public administration, we create and advance the boundaries of social consensus in areas such as diversity (Hewins-Maroney & Williams, 2007; National Association of Schools of Public …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Patients receiving Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) for late stage head and neck (HN) cancer often experience anatomical changes due to weight loss, tumor regression, and positional changes of normal anatomy (1). As a result, the actual dose delivered may vary from the original treatment plan. The purpose of this study was (a) to evaluate the dosimetric consequences of the parotid glands during the course of treatment, and (b) to determine if there would be an optimal timeframe for replanning. Nineteen locally advanced HN cancer patients underwent definitive IMRT. Each patient received an initial computerized tomography simulation (CT-SIM) scan and …

How The Spatial Organization Of Objects Affects Perceptual Processing Of A Scene, Stacey Rashford Jan 2015

How The Spatial Organization Of Objects Affects Perceptual Processing Of A Scene, Stacey Rashford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

How does spatial organization of objects affect the perceptual processing of a scene? Surprisingly, little research has explored this topic. A few studies have reported that, when simple, homogenous stimuli (e.g., dots), are presented in a regular formation, they are judged to be more numerous than when presented in a random configuration (Ginsburg, 1976; 1978). However, these results may not apply to real-world objects. In the current study, fewer objects were believed to be on organized desks than their disorganized equivalents. Objects that are organized may be more likely to become integrated, due to classic Gestalt principles. Consequently, visual search …

The Influence Of University Student Leader’S Cognitive And Behavioral Agility On Organizational Member Commitment, Lauren Adamo Jan 2015

The Influence Of University Student Leader’S Cognitive And Behavioral Agility On Organizational Member Commitment, Lauren Adamo

The Influence Of Time-Equated Training Programs On Muscle Hypertrophy, Strength, And Body Composition, Chad Dolan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of this study was to determine if barbell circuit training (RTC) as a model for concurrent training is superior to high intensity interval (CTHI) or moderate intensity continuous (CTMI) cycling for changes in muscular strength, hypertrophy, and body composition. Eleven trained males were recruited and counterbalanced into three groups. Each program featured three alternating days of resistance training per week, with one of the above time-equated (30-minute) concurrent training modalities between sessions. All groups increased muscular strength (p<0.05, RTC=7.48%, CTHI=10.32%, CTMI=15.74%) with no group differences (p>0.05). Increases in upper body muscle hypertrophy were similar in RTC and CTMI (p<0.01, RTC=20.18%, CTMI=20.97%), increases in lower body muscle hypertrophy only occurred in CTMI (VM: p=0.01, 38.59%, VLP: p=0.07, 13.33%), while no hypertrophy changes were detected in CTHI (p>0.05), no group experienced changes in …

To determine the meaning of BMI screening and referral to parents a mixed methods approach was utilized. Voluntary interviews of …

The Rhetoric Of Law And Love: Legally (Re)Defining Marriage, Volrick Wallace Higgs Jan 2015

The Rhetoric Of Law And Love: Legally (Re)Defining Marriage, Volrick Wallace Higgs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In just over one year since United States v. Windsor— the case invalidating sections of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that defined marriage, for purposes of federal statutes, as the “union of man and woman”— more than a dozen states have had their same-sex marriage bans ruled unconstitutional. This suggests a shift in legal meaning; previously successful arguments against same-sex “marriage” now seem irrational as argumentative ground has shifted. Since favorable rulings redefine “marriage” to include same-sex unions, this thesis analyzes Kitchen v. Herbert, a 2014 legal opinion from the United States Court of Appeals Tenth Circuit, to understand …

The Theological Roots And Historical Context Of J. S. Bach’S St. Matthew Passion, Bwv 244, Tennison Hubbard Jan 2015

The Theological Roots And Historical Context Of J. S. Bach’S St. Matthew Passion, Bwv 244, Tennison Hubbard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

History shows that Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a devout member of the Lutheran faith. Studying Bach’s life reveals that two sects of Lutheranism were the most influential to him, Orthodoxy and Pietism. A brief historical study of these two sects’ founders and their theology are presented in this document. All of Bach’s compositions are a reflection of his Christian beliefs but none is greater than his St. Matthew Passion. Although Bach is known to be a member of the Orthodox denomination, by observing the parallels between the beliefs of the two sects and the St. Matthew Passion, this document …

This dissertation examines how transnationalism can affect Islamists’ moderation in both Egypt and Morocco. In this dissertation, I do an in-depth comparative case study analysis to assess the prospects of moderation of two Islamists political entities, the Muslim Brotherhood as a transnational social movement and the Morocco Party of Justice and Development (JDP), which has no transnational ties. Both the Muslim Brotherhood and PJD came to power after the Arab uprising in 2011 and were key players in the democratic transitions in both countries; however, the entities are not related. Further, the dissertation will explore the moderation level of the …

The Significance For, And Impact Upon, Public Administration Of The Correspondence Theory Of Truth Or Veridicality, Derek Ray Slagle Jan 2015

The Significance For, And Impact Upon, Public Administration Of The Correspondence Theory Of Truth Or Veridicality, Derek Ray Slagle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The dissertation is about the significance for, and impact upon public administration of the correspondence theory of truth or veridicality, and its underlying epistemological assumptions. The underlying thesis is that, unduly influenced by the success of the natural sciences, and naive in accepting their claims to objectivity, many disciplines have sought to emulate them. There are two principle objections. Firstly, all other considerations aside, the supposedly objectivistic methodologies apparently applied to the explanation and prediction of the behavior of interactions of physical objects, may simply be inappropriate to certain other areas of inquiry; and more specifically objectivist methodologies are indeed …

Mechanisms Controlling Distribution Of Cosmopolitan Submerged Aquatic Vegetation: A Model Study Of Ruppia Maritima L. (Widgeongrass) At The Everglades-Florida Bay Ecotone, Theresa Strazisar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Aquatic plants and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) are some of the most wide-ranging species and create important habitat for fish and wildlife in many ecosystems, including highly variable coastal ecotones. Mechanistically understanding factors controlling current distributions of these species is critical to project future distribution and abundance under increasing variability and climate change. I used a population-based approach to quantify the effects of spatial and temporal variability on life history transitions of the SAV Ruppia maritima L. (widgeongrass) in the highly dynamic Everglades-Florida Bay ecotone as a model to (1) examine which life history stages were most constrained by these …

Optical 2d Positional Estimation For A Biomimetic Station-Keeping Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Christopher Nunes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Underwater vehicles often use acoustics or dead reckoning for global positioning, which is impractical for low cost, high proximity applications. An optical based positional feedback system for a wave tank operated biomimetic station-keeping vehicle was made using an extended Kalman filter and a model of a nearby light source. After physical light model verification, the filter estimated surge, sway, and heading with 6 irradiance sensors and a low cost inertial measurement unit (~$15). Physical testing with video feedback suggests an average error of ~2cm in surge and sway, and ~3deg in yaw, over a 1200 cm2 operational area. This is …

By looking at the history of copyright and its evolution, one can assess how Congress has been tasked with establishing a fair market value for music by promoting the public interest and fairly compensating copyright owners. This will lead to an evaluation and comparison …

Multisensory Cues Facilitate Infants’ Ability To Discriminate Other-Race Faces, Nicholas J. Minar Jan 2015

Multisensory Cues Facilitate Infants’ Ability To Discriminate Other-Race Faces, Nicholas J. Minar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Our everyday world consists of people and objects that are usually specified by dynamic and concurrent auditory and visual attributes, which is known to increase perceptual salience and, therefore, facilitate learning and discrimination in infancy. Interestingly, early experience with faces and vocalizations has two seemingly opposite effects during the first year of life, 1) it enables infants to gradually acquire perceptual expertise for the faces and vocalizations of their own race and, 2) it narrows their ability to discriminate the faces of other-race faces (Kelly et al., 2007). It is not known whether multisensory redundancy might help older infants overcome …

The Importance Of Immobilization And Localization Of Gynecological Applicators In High Dose Rate Brachytherapy Treatments, Mikko Hyvärinen Jan 2015

The Importance Of Immobilization And Localization Of Gynecological Applicators In High Dose Rate Brachytherapy Treatments, Mikko Hyvärinen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Intracavitary high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy generally in which a post-surgical tissue margin is treated. The dose gradient of HDR brachytherapy is very steep, and thus small displacements of the applicator, even as small as 1 mm, could potentially cause significant variations of dose which could result in undesired side effects such as overdose of a critical organ. In this retrospective dosimetric study, the variation of dose due to various small range motions of gynecological applicators is investigated. The results show that the implementation of additional immobilization and localization devices along with other safety …

The Effects Of Dichoptic And Isoluminant-Chromatic Stimuli On The Perception Of Object And Objectless Motion, Matthew S. Seifert Jan 2015

The Effects Of Dichoptic And Isoluminant-Chromatic Stimuli On The Perception Of Object And Objectless Motion, Matthew S. Seifert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Visual motion can be conveyed by a variety of information sources in the environment, and those types of information may be detected at various levels by different motion-perceiving mechanisms in the visual system. High-level visual information has been demonstrated to have 3rd order, or salience-based properties (Lu & Sperling, 1995). The perceptual system they describe that computes motion from these types of information shares several characteristics with Hock and colleagues' counterchange detection system, notably flexibility with respect to types of input from which motion can be computed, which comes at the cost of diminished processing speed. The mechanism of counterchange …
