Interviewing Adolescent Females In Qualitative Research, Carmen S. Dixon

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative interviewing is widely used in educational research. However, while research related to effective interview strategies for use with many different population groups exists, the study of successful interview strategies for use with adolescent girls has been limited. To address this limitation, the researcher explores the various methodologies of qualitative interviewing, selects the most appropriate for her study, then outlines three important considerations for this population group: Ethical issues, power dynamics, and building trust. After discussing how these issues can best be addressed, the researcher includes reflections made after conducting two interviews each with eight adolescent females. The interview approach …

Framework For Hyperspectral Image Processing And Quantification For Cancer Detection During Animal Tumor Surgery, Guolan Lu, Dongsheng Wang, Xulei Qin, Luma Halig, Susan Muller, Hongzheng Zhang, Amy Chen, Brian W. Pogue, Zhuo G. Chen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is an imaging modality that holds strong potential for rapid cancer detection during image-guided surgery. But the data from HSI often needs to be processed appropriately in order to extract the maximum useful information that differentiates cancer from normal tissue. We proposed a framework for hyperspectral image processing and quantification, which includes a set of steps including image preprocessing, glare removal, feature extraction, and ultimately image classification. The framework has been tested on images from mice with head and neck cancer, using spectra from 450- to 900-nm wavelength. The image analysis computed Fourier coefficients, normalized reflectance, mean, …

The African Journal of Information Systems

The use of location-based mobile advertising to deliver context specific information from businesses to clients has the potential to help them increase revenues, personalize offerings and reduce marketing costs. However, there is a lack of adoption of this emergent mode of advertising among micro-enterprises. This study examined the underlying reasons for this lack of adoption using an exploratory factor analytic study based on an adaptation of the Technology Acceptance Model with the choice of technology as an additional factor. Data was collected in a survey involving 304 micro-enterprises by means of structured questionnaires and interview schedules. A majority of micro-enterprises …

Humanization Of Time In The Pre-Islamic Era, The Knight Poets As A Choice, Mohammed Fleih Hassan Al-Jubouri, Maher Sabbar Fahd Dec 2015

Humanization Of Time In The Pre-Islamic Era, The Knight Poets As A Choice, Mohammed Fleih Hassan Al-Jubouri, Maher Sabbar Fahd

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The knight poets of the pre-Islamic era turned to creative means that helped them to enable the reader to read the text correctly, in line with the reading of model texts. Among these creative constructive means is (humanization of things), by which we mean giving the poet life with all that surrounds him of material and moral beings. The knight poets attributed human qualities to inanimate and living things, giving them human qualities, which made them converse and complain, as they became effective in the text. We also see them attribute this characteristic to the material of time and its …

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Inverted assonance is a form of word play that involves rearranging all the letters in a word or phrase to form a new one. Inverted assonance is formed by using the same letters as in the original word but in a different order. The term is used in everyday life to create a funny and clever inverted assonance. The study aims to rearrange letters in some way to form a word or phrase that has a meaning or is related to the original word, as well as to analyze inverted assonance in a poem. The present study is designed in …

Study Of Quranic Readings In Ibn Aqil’S Commentary On Ibn Malik’S Alfiyyah, Sereen Hussein Kazem Dec 2015

Study Of Quranic Readings In Ibn Aqil’S Commentary On Ibn Malik’S Alfiyyah, Sereen Hussein Kazem

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The early grammarians exerted extensive effort after establishing the rules of Arabic grammar, as they began to extrapolate the language from its primary sources: the Holy Quran and its recitations, poetry, the speech of eloquent Arabs, and proverbs. In their extrapolation, they sought correctness, precision, and comprehensiveness. The grammatical evidence they took to strengthen a grammatical rule, establish a rule they derived, or a linguistic ruling they arrived at. Ibn Malik’s Alfiyyah is one of the grammatical systems that scholars and students have eagerly memorized, studied, and explained for several centuries. Its popularity has led to a clear abundance of …

Mapping Gravitational-Wave Backgrounds Of Arbitrary Polarisation Using Pulsar Timing Arrays, Jonathan Gair, Joseph D. Romano, Stephen R. Taylor Dec 2015

Mapping Gravitational-Wave Backgrounds Of Arbitrary Polarisation Using Pulsar Timing Arrays, Jonathan Gair, Joseph D. Romano, Stephen R. Taylor

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We extend our previous work on mapping gravitational-wave backgrounds using techniques borrowed from the analysis of cosmic microwave background data to backgrounds which have non-general-relativity (non-GR) polarisations. Our analysis and results are presented in the context of pulsar timing array observations, but the overarching methods are general, and can be easily applied to LIGO or eLISA observations using appropriately modified response functions. Analytic expressions for the pulsar timing response to gravitational waves with non-GR polarisation are given for each mode of a spin-weighted spherical-harmonic decomposition of the background, which permit the signal to be mapped across the sky to any …

Feature Selection And Classifier Development For Radio Frequency Device Identification, Trevor J. Bihl Dec 2015

Feature Selection And Classifier Development For Radio Frequency Device Identification, Trevor J. Bihl

Theses and Dissertations

The proliferation of simple and low-cost devices, such as IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee and Z-Wave, in Critical Infrastructure (CI) increases security concerns. Radio Frequency Distinct Native Attribute (RF-DNA) Fingerprinting facilitates biometric-like identification of electronic devices emissions from variances in device hardware. Developing reliable classifier models using RF-DNA fingerprints is thus important for device discrimination to enable reliable Device Classification (a one-to-many looks most like assessment) and Device ID Verification (a one-to-one looks how much like assessment). AFITs prior RF-DNA work focused on Multiple Discriminant Analysis/Maximum Likelihood (MDA/ML) and Generalized Relevance Learning Vector Quantized Improved (GRLVQI) classifiers. This work 1) introduces a …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this work was to demonstrate the feasibility of building recurrent artificial neural networks with hybrid complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS)/memristor circuits. To do so, we modeled a Hopfield network implementing an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with up to 8 bits of precision. Major shortcomings affecting the ADC's precision, such as the non-ideal behavior of CMOS circuitry and the specific limitations of memristors, were investigated and an effective solution was proposed, capitalizing on the in-field programmability of memristors. The theoretical work was validated experimentally by demonstrating the successful operation of a 4-bit ADC circuit implemented with discrete Pt/TiO2− …

Berry V. State, 131 Nev. Adv. Op. No. 96 (Dec. 24, 2015), Brittany L. Shipp

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The issue before the Court was an appeal from a district court order dismissing a post-conviction petition for writ of habeas corpus. The Court reversed and remanded holding that the district court improperly discounted the declarations in support of the appellant’s petition, which included a confession of another suspect, whom the petitioner implicated as the real perpetrator at trial. The Court held that these declarations were sufficient to merit discovery, and an evidentiary hearing on Petitioner Berry’s gateway actual innocence claim.

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The Court of Appeals determined that the district court did not abuse its discretion by allowing the State to file an information by affidavit more than 15 days after the preliminary examination concluded, when the justice court committed an “egregious error,” and “the defendant was discharged but not prejudiced by the delay.” Further, the Court defines “egregious error” as when “a charge was erroneously dismissed or a defendant was erroneously discharged based on a magistrate’s error.” Due to the justice court’s egregious errors in the preliminary examination that resulted in appellant’s discharge, the Court found that the district court was …
