Breeding Technologies In U.S. Meat Goat Production: Who Are The Adopters And How Does Adoption Impact Productivity?, Jeffrey Gillespie, Berdikul Qushim, Narayan Nyaupane, Kenneth Mcmillin

Faculty Publications

Copyright 2015 Northeastern Agricultural and Resource Economics Association. Adoption of advanced breeding technologies and management practices (BTMP) in U.S. meat goat production and their impact were examined. Adopters generally had larger-scale operations, used rotational grazing and/or dry lot systems, and sold larger percentages of animals for breeding and show purposes. Farmer demographics and farm variables also influenced adoption. Complementarity of adoption was found-adopters of one BTMP tended to adopt other BTMPs. Measures of productivity and profitability were not affected by adoption. Goat breed, farmer experience, production system used, and specialization influenced productivity, and farm size had the greatest influence on …

Creating A Highway Information System For Safety Roadway Features, Brian K. Howell, Kenneth R. Agent, Eric Green

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Roadway departures are the leading cause of roadside fatalities. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has undertaken a number of roadside safety measures to reduce roadway departures. Specifically, KYTC has installed several low-cost, systemic roadway safety treatments to Kentucky’s roadways in recent years. These treatments include cable barriers, high friction surface treatments, rumble stripes, and Safety Edges. KYTC has installed approximately 44 cable barrier systems over 265 miles of roadway,112 HFST applications over 20 miles of roadway, 750 rumble stripe installations over 2,500 miles of roadway, and 147 Safety Edge treatments on 580 miles of roadway. The project team developed a …

Recognizing The Limits Of Antitrust: The Roberts Court Versus The Enforcement Agencies, Thom Lambert, Alden F. Abbott Dec 2015

Recognizing The Limits Of Antitrust: The Roberts Court Versus The Enforcement Agencies, Thom Lambert, Alden F. Abbott

Faculty Publications

In his seminal 1984 article, The Limits of Antitrust, Judge Frank Easterbrook proposed that courts and enforcers adopt a simple set of screening rules for application in antitrust cases, in order to minimize error and decision costs and thereby maximize antitrust's social value. Over time, federal courts in general, and the U.S. Supreme Court in particular, under Chief Justice Roberts have in substantial part adopted Easterbrook's "limits of antitrust" approach, thereby helping to reduce costly antitrust uncertainty. Recently, however, antitrust enforcers in the Obama Administration (unlike their predecessors in the Reagan, Bush, and Clinton Administrations) have been less attuned to …

From Incentive To Commodity To Asset: How International Law Is Reconceptualizing Intellectual Property, Rochelle Dreyfuss, Susy Frankel Dec 2015

From Incentive To Commodity To Asset: How International Law Is Reconceptualizing Intellectual Property, Rochelle Dreyfuss, Susy Frankel

Michigan Journal of International Law

The intellectual property landscape is changing. As Jerry Reichman once observed, intellectual property rights were islands in a sea of the public domain until domestic laws expanded to include such “innovations” as business methods, software, scents, and sounds and turned the public domain into a pond surrounded by a continent of rights. Reichman spoke towards the end of the 20th century, and whatever problems accompanied this change, in truth (to paraphrase Voltaire’s view of the Holy Roman Empire), the concept of “intellectual property rights” was predominantly about neither “property” nor “rights” (nor was it always “intellectual”). Rather, copyright, patent, and …

The SOMA tree inventory project was taken on by a group of fourteen students as a senior capstone at Portland State University, in September of 2015. Many of us came to this class with GiS background, however, there are others representing the diverse collection of studies offered at PSU, such as film, communication, and general sciences. Capstone courses are PSU’s requirement for all seniors that allow each student to take part in helping those in the surrounding community, by providing a benefit to organizations in need of a large group of volunteers. Our capstone course was designed to impart the …

Human Capital Development And Parental Investment In India, Orazio P. Attanasio, Costas Meghir, Emily Nix Dec 2015

Human Capital Development And Parental Investment In India, Orazio P. Attanasio, Costas Meghir, Emily Nix

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We estimate production functions for cognition and health for children aged 1-12 in India, where over 70 million children aged 0-5 are at risk of developmental deficits. The inputs into the production functions include parental background, prior child cognition and health, and child investments. We use income and local prices to control for the endogeneity of investments. We find that cognition is sensitive to investments throughout the age range we consider, while health is mainly affected by early investments. We also find that inputs are complementary, and crucially that health is very important in determining cognition. Our paper contributes in …

Determinants Of Vendor Profitability In Two Contractual Regimes: An Empirical Analysis Of Enterprise Resource Planning Projects, Stefan Hoermann, Tobias Hlavka, Michael Schermann, Helmut Krcmar Dec 2015

Determinants Of Vendor Profitability In Two Contractual Regimes: An Empirical Analysis Of Enterprise Resource Planning Projects, Stefan Hoermann, Tobias Hlavka, Michael Schermann, Helmut Krcmar

Information Systems and Analytics

In this paper, we investigate the effects of four determinants of vendor profitability in enterprise resource planning (ERP) outsourcing projects under two contractual regimes: fixed price (FP) contracts and time and material (TM) contracts. We hypothesize that effect sizes are larger under FP contracts than under TM contracts. From a transaction cost economics perspective, we hypothesize that project uncertainty and project size are negatively associated with vendor profitability. From a knowledge-based view of the firm perspective, we hypothesize that industry knowledge and client knowledge are positively associated with vendor profitability. We tested these hypotheses on a comprehensive archival data set …

An Investigation Of Cooling Configurations In Gas Turbine Engines Using Jet Impingement, Bhushan Upalkar Dec 2015

An Investigation Of Cooling Configurations In Gas Turbine Engines Using Jet Impingement, Bhushan Upalkar

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

A numerical investigation for predicting the heat transfer effects of turbulence was conducted by making a scaled-up model of a section in a jet impingement channel. Different turbulence models were run and the results were compared to experimental data. Experimental comparisons were made for impingement channels between a baseline case, which is a rectangular array of jets of 20 rows and 3 jets per row, and different hole spacing configurations. The heat transfer was measured using Temperature Sensitive Paint. The turbulence model v²-f gave the most accurate prediction with an error of about 17% with the EB k-E, with an …

A Para-Clerical Approach To The Galileo Affair And To Science Vs. Religion, Maurice A. Finocchiaro Dec 2015

A Para-Clerical Approach To The Galileo Affair And To Science Vs. Religion, Maurice A. Finocchiaro

Philosophy Faculty Research

In 1633, the Inquisition condemned Galileo for defending Copernicus’s hypothesis of the earth’s motion and denying the scientific authority of Scripture. This ended the original controversy, but generated a new one that continues today, for example, about whether the condemnation proves the incompatibility between science and religion. Recently the Galileo affair has been studied by several scholars whom I label “Berkeley para-clericals,” chiefly philosopher Paul Feyerabend and historian John Heilbron. Their approach is distinctive: it views controversial topics involving the relationship between science and religion from a perspective that is secular-minded, but appreciative of religion, and yet conducted in the …

Grooming Habits And Self-Perceptions Among Emerging Adults, Madeline A. Dunton

Honors College Theses

The recent increase of use of the dating websites and applications has called to question whether the use of these dating websites and applications causes emerging adults to place greater emphasis on their grooming habits, and if this emphasis is driven by a desire for sexual partners. The purpose of this study was to see whether an emerging adult’s daily grooming habits are influenced or affected by self-perceptions, and if there was a relationship between emerging adults’ sexual activity and grooming habits. The distribution of a self-report survey to 267 college-aged students regarding the use of grooming products and ratings …

Atlantic Casualty Insurance Company V. Greytak: Adopting The Notice-Prejudice Rule And Clarifying Misinterpretations, Kristen Zadick

Montana Law Review Online

Seeking to clarify past decisions and protect insureds’ rights to insurance coverage, the Montana Supreme Court formally adopted the notice-prejudice rule in third party coverage disputes in Atlantic Casualty Insurance Company v. Greytak. However, in doing so, the Court failed to fully reconcile the decision with prior case law regarding the noticeprejudice issue.

Pedagogy, Social Transformation, And Space: Toward A Revolutionary Critical Pedagogy For Space, Derek R. Ford Dec 2015

Pedagogy, Social Transformation, And Space: Toward A Revolutionary Critical Pedagogy For Space, Derek R. Ford

Dissertations - ALL

Building on the work of Peter McLaren, Henri Lefebvre, and David Harvey, this dissertation develops a revolutionary critical pedagogy for space. I begin with a historical and theoretical survey of the roots critical pedagogy, a pedagogical orientation that is often called upon but rarely situated deeply. I then break down revolutionary critical pedagogy into seven components. I elaborate the dominant trends in the current social-political moment. I introduce two terms here, neoliberalism and the global class war. I argue that the former is a necessary but ultimately insufficient framework for understanding the present moment, and that the latter provides a …

Classical Codes For Quantum Broadcast Channels, Ivan Savov, Mark M. Wilde Dec 2015

Classical Codes For Quantum Broadcast Channels, Ivan Savov, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

We present two approaches for transmitting classical information over quantum broadcast channels. The first technique is a quantum generalization of the superposition coding scheme for the classical broadcast channel. We use a quantum simultaneous nonunique decoder and obtain a proof of the rate region stated in Yard et al., IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 57 (10), 2011. Our second result is a quantum generalization of the Marton coding scheme. The error analysis for the quantum Marton region makes use of ideas in our earlier work and an idea recently presented by Radhakrishnan et al. in arXiv:1410.3248. Both results exploit recent advances …

The Seesaw Effect Of Winter Temperature Change On The Recruitment Of Cotton Bollworms Helicoverpa Armigera Through Mismatched Phenology, Gadi V.P. Reddy, Peijian Shi, Cang Hui, Xiaofei Cheng, Fang Ouyang, Feng Ge

Faculty Publications

Knowing how climate change affects the population dynamics of insect pests is critical for the future of integrated pest management. Rising winter temperatures from global warming can drive increases in outbreaks of some agricultural pests. In contrast, here we propose an alternative hypothesis that both extremely cold and warm winters can mismatch the timing between the eclosion of overwintering pests and the flowering of key host plants. As host plants normally need higher effective cumulative temperatures for flowering than insects need for eclosion, changes in flowering time will be less dramatic than changes in eclosion time, leading to a mismatch …

Globally, hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection is responsible for a large proportion of persons with liver disease, including cancer. The infection is highly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. West Africa was identified as a geographic origin of two HCV genotypes. However, little is known about the genetic composition of HCV populations in many countries of the region. Using conventional and next-generation sequencing (NGS), we identified and genetically characterized 65 HCV strains circulating among HCV-positive blood donors in Kumasi, Ghana. Phylogenetic analysis using consensus sequences derived from 3 genomic regions of the HCV genome, 5'-untranslated region, hypervariable region 1 (HVR1) and NS5B …

An Immersive Telepresence System Using Rgb-D Sensors And Head-Mounted Display, Xinzhong Lu, Ju Shen, Saverio Perugini, Jianjun Yang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We present a tele-immersive system that enables people to interact with each other in a virtual world using body gestures in addition to verbal communication. Beyond the obvious applications, including general online conversations and gaming, we hypothesize that our proposed system would be particularly beneficial to education by offering rich visual contents and interactivity. One distinct feature is the integration of egocentric pose recognition that allows participants to use their gestures to demonstrate and manipulate virtual objects simultaneously. This functionality enables the instructor to effectively and efficiently explain and illustrate complex concepts or sophisticated problems in an intuitive manner. The …

Of Minds, Morals, And Methods: Combining Moral Meteorology And Disaster Relief In Historiography Of China’S Disaster Management, Wee-Kiat Lim

CCX Research

In this working paper, I argue that disaster management in high Qing period can be better understood by simultaneously considering the historiographies of how governing elites understood disasters at the metaphysical level and the administration of disaster relief. During High Qing late imperial China, the regime encountered rapid changes in population, economy, and environment. Following how environmental historian Mark Elvin describes the prevalent ideology that guided Chinese governing elites on implicating human conduct with the manifestation of disasters as “moral meteorology”, I link it to the granary system so as to underscore how these two related but separate streams of …
