Design And Fabrication Of An Instrumented Cane For The Blind, Aaron Dean Dec 2015

Design And Fabrication Of An Instrumented Cane For The Blind, Aaron Dean

Honors Theses

The most commonly used tool for navigation by the blind is the white cane. A greater understanding is essential in improving the design and performance of these canes. An existing cane was modified with integrated force and acceleration sensors, in order to study the relation between cane vibration characteristics and obstacle or drop-off detection. Data was gathered by these sensors, and then transmitted wirelessly to a computer workstation, where it was recorded and analyzed. Exertion of the forearm muscles was also measured. Care was taken to insure that the cane sensors and transmitter are ergonomically unobtrusive for the user. The …

A Generalized Model Of Cognitive Workload, Taylor Carpenter Dec 2015

A Generalized Model Of Cognitive Workload, Taylor Carpenter

Theses

Numerous catastrophic accidents have been the result of human operators making poor judgement calls stemming from suboptimal decision making. This suboptimal decision making, in many cases, arises when an operator is either in a high cognitive workload state, overwhelmed with information leading to a greater chance of missing an important detail, or in a low cognitive workload state, distracted and overall not paying attention to the task at hand. If the cognitive workload of an individual can be properly monitored, suboptimal operator conditions can be recognized or prevented, reducing the chance of an accident. While previous research has led to …

Estrogen Receptor-Α Directly Regulates The Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 Pathway Associated With Antiestrogen Response In Breast Cancer, J Yang, A Altahan, Dt Jones, Fm Buffa, Et Al Dec 2015

Estrogen Receptor-Α Directly Regulates The Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 Pathway Associated With Antiestrogen Response In Breast Cancer, J Yang, A Altahan, Dt Jones, Fm Buffa, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

A majority of breast cancers are driven by estrogen via estrogen receptor-α (ERα). Our previous studies indicate that hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) cooperates with ERα in breast cancer cells. However, whether ERα is implicated in the direct regulation of HIF-1α and the role of HIF-1α in endocrine therapy response are unknown. In this study we found that a subpopulation of HIF-1α targets, many of them bearing both hypoxia response elements and estrogen response elements, are regulated by ERα in normoxia and hypoxia. Interestingly, the HIF-1α gene itself also bears an estrogen response element, and its expression is directly regulated by …
